Beck’s solution for New Orleans: More guns.

As the pace of reconstruction in New Orleans slows, the crime rate in New Orleans has increased. Rather than focus on addressing the horrible conditions facing the region’s residents, right-wing pundit Glenn Beck offers an alternative solution: give them guns. “There’s not enough guns in New Orleans,” Beck claims. He said he envisions “an exchange program” where willing donors pay for guns for poor people in New Orleans. “You come on my program, say I’m poor, I am a law-abiding citizen, I don’t have a record, blah, blah, blah, I’ll match you with a donor that will buy a gun,” he said.

TP where is the Hillary campaign secret donor story?

    – A Pakistani immigrant is wanted by federal authorities on charges he channeled $30,000 in illegal contributions to Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton’s presidential war chest.

The FBI is hunting Los Angeles businessman Abdul Rehman Jinnah, who vanished soon after his grand-jury indictment for violating federal election laws last May.

–Norman Hsu is one of the leading political fund-raisers in the country this year. In fact, many fund-raisers say he is one of a small handful of people capable of raising more than $1 million — a major feat considering the maximum donation allowed by an individual for 2008 races is $4,600 per candidate.

  17. WhydidblacksvoteNaginbackin? says:

Only delusional and hallucinating progressives would deny the irrefutable link between law-abiding citizens possessing guns and a direct decrease in crime, despite the fact that studies attest to this. Since logic isn’t a progressive’s strong suit, I’ll break it down for their infantile minds: carrying guns for personal protection purposes actually prevents crimes because law-abiding citizens now have the means to defend themselves against the criminals who wield firearms. The fact that New Orleans still is impotently failing to rebuild itself in a timely fashion after more than two years and billions after billions of government subsidies reflects on the quality of the lowlife citizens there. The problem isn’t a need for money; the problem is the barbaric ineptitude with which government bureaucracy (local and state Dems) allocates that money to New Orleans. The problem is that New Orleans minorities are entitlement-minded so instead of helping themselves, they stupidly sit around and expect the government to do it for them!

  32. noops says:

Glenn Beck may be the biggest jerkoff on TV (Ok, in reality he’s probably about third after Falafel and Hannity), but, what’s your point? Almost every study done over the last 15 years shows either no correlation between legal gun ownership and crime or actually shows a reduction in crime. A few that are for gun control (the famous Kellerman study (1986) that said you’re 43 times more likely…Kellerman even refused to release his data after it came into dispute and admitted to using methodology not defined at the beginning of the study!).

But more importantly, all the angst over gun control just hasn’t come true. All the wailing that blood would run in the streets, and gunfights all over, and return to the old west just haven’t happened. LEGAL gun owners have some of the lowest demographic crime rates of any demo. We now have 40 right to carry states, and the doomsday people keep coming back.

So, I don’t think it’s a good idea to pay for guns for poor people, I don’t see more guns as a bad thing.

Well, duh! You can’t be a legal gun owner if you commit crimes. Legal walkers are the least likely to jaywalk. Driver’s license owners are the least likely to drive without a license, too.

  37. noops says:

    miatch,

That’s interesting. Violent crime is up over the last two years in new york. Besides that, your post implies causation. Do you actually have evidence for that?

  38. toasterhead says:

We stand for law-abiding citizens being able to own weapons as they choose, don’t you think?

    Comment by Statistico — August 29, 2007 @ 2:45 pm

  39. noops says:

I see that “everyone having guns will cut down on crime” solution is working quite well in Iraq. Iraq should be our role model.

Beautiful misdirection. There is, last I checked, a war going on there. So I’m not sure that qualifies as the best place to study the subject. But maybe.

On the other hand, Britain, Canada, and Australia all have rapidly increasing violent crime rates (including illegal guns), and have very tight gun controls.

  40. miatch says:

    noops:
of course we don’t have evidence of causation. There are a million causes for crime going down “OVER THE LAST 20 YEARS” in New York, not just the gun laws. I actually think the biggest key was Clinton giving federal money to increase our police force in the 1990s. There is also quite a bit more money flowing through this town today then in the 1980s.

But the point is, guns and crime have both decreased. So, stating that more guns = less crime is bs.

  41. Kevin says:

    Comment by Bob

Poor Bob, you have to wait months, sometimes years for “these types (sic) news stories…”
    Republicans provide these types daily……..

  43. noops says:

It’s kind of amazing that you’ve admitted no evidence of causation but your willing to state that “more guns = less crime is bs.” Not sure we should implement policy on that.

On the other hand, Right to Carry states have significantly reduced violent crime rates (total violent crime by 22%; murder, 30%; robbery, 46%; and aggravated assault, 12%) according to the Bureau of Justice Statistics and the FBI. On top of that, during the last 20 years that you mention, an additional 20 states have gone “right to carry.”

So, while I’m not necessarily implying causation either, it’s not immediately clear that “more guns = less crime is bs.” Since there are, in fact, more guns and less crime.

  65. Leporello says:

Lets follow this logic to its insane conclusion. If guns make streets safe, then we can eliminate police forces completely if we give every man, woman and child a gun! Then everyone will be completely safe! And we can make them safer by providing really, really large caliber weapons! Smaller people can be made safer by being given automatic weapons and a copious supply of ammunition! Taxes drop, due to the dismissal of the police force. Employment goes up as there will be fewer people living, thereby increasing the demand for workers. Urban renewal becomes an ongoing process due to the never-ending firefights. Construction goes up as the demand for bunkers goes through the ceiling! Let people get flame throwers and you eliminate the need to clean up the bodies! Yes, this logic is truly insane and its ending absurd. However, even more absurd is that there are people who are nuts enough to buy into it. What a world!
