Commanders ‘divided’ over way forward in Iraq.»

McClatchy reports:

In a sign that top commanders are divided over what course to pursue in Iraq, the Pentagon said Wednesday that it won’t make a single, unified recommendation to President Bush during next month’s strategy assessment, but instead will allow top commanders to make individual presentations. […]

Military analysts called the move unusual for an institution that ordinarily does not air its differences in public, especially while its troops are deployed in combat. […]

[Military analyst Jeffrey] White said it suggests that the military commanders want to be able to distance themselves from Iraq strategy by making it clear that whatever course is followed is the president’s decision, not what commanders agreed on.

UPDATE: Daily Kos diarist The Angry Rakkasan writes, “Pentagon Gives Up; Hands War Over to Bush.”

The progtards are in mortal danger of purposefully misconstruing this simple article of three paragraphs. McClatchy newspapers–like Gannett–are radicalized, liberal fanatics, so it’s no surprise that their examination of the way military commanders will make their recommendations is laced with nothing but ideological spin. The one, true, correct interpretation here is that Bush ought to be praised for his tolerant openness in permitting all these different commanders to give their various viewpoints about strategy. Progtarded misinterpretations on these boards range from the BS that the strategy “ain’t” working, or that the commanders want to distance themselves from fact that it’s Bush ultimate decision. However, it’s only Bush’s ultimate decision because he’s the CiC, not because the military wants to “distance” themselves from the Iraq strategy and make it clear that their decision wasn’t followed. Progtards should be fair and admit Bush is consistent for listening to ALL his generals: that’s why he permits their differing views in these assessments!

This is not exactly a tremendous act of courage by our military’s elite. This is what happened during the Vietnam War, when the warlords of that time period deferred their decision making, with almost no protest at all, to LBJ and Nixon. Those military leaders in the Pentagon should tell Bush very firmly that if Bush insists upon taking this country upon its present course, that they will resign their positions and let the media know that Bush’s divine decisions are taking this country on the road to disaster.

GWB is the one phenomenon that the founding fathers believed could have never happened under the set of checks and balances they encoded into the Constitution. What if the Executive branch simply ignored the document and used the armed forces to subvert the nation under the guise of being Commander in Chief? They never imagined that our forces would be stationed a half world away in a war of suppression. After all, we were destined to be a bastion of freedom, not a yoke of oppression like that we had cast from our shores.

If this was really true, and our King really, really believed it, and all the commanders say our troops are stretched thin, don’t you think we should have a draft to save our country from the coming Islamistfacist enemy?

I was thinking I would be neglecting my civic duty if I didn’t offer some suggestions for Attorney General to replace Alberto Gonzales. According to Wikipedia, the United States Attorney General is “the head of the United States Department of Justice concerned with legal affairs and is the chief law enforcement officer of the United States government fart poopie boogers.”

So who best fits that description?

Robocop: Robocop was my first reaction. He is part man, part machine, all cop. Robocop is good at enforcing laws. Also, he has a gun in his leg. He would be programmed with these directives:

    1. Serve the public trust
    2. Protect the innocent
    3. Uphold the law
    4. (Classified)

I’m guessing the fourth one is something that would allow him to break the other directives in the case of helping a Bush-Cheney dictatorship, but who knows.

“Dirty” Harry Callahan: I think it would be perfect for the chief law enforcement officer to be a rogue cop who doesn’t play by the rules. Of course, this could be trouble for him at his confirmation hearings as Democrats would proclaim, “We can’t confirm him! He’s a rogue cop! And not just a rogue cop; a rogue cop who doesn’t play by the rules!” Callahan would then say, “Rules are made to be broken, just like your nose!” And then he’d punch the Democrat in the face, because that’s what Callahan does: He punches liberals in the face when they get in the way of justice!

Horatio Cain: C.S.I. from Miami, notable for often committing more homicides than he solves. I’m not even sure if C.S.I.s usually even carry guns, but he’s always running in ahead of S.W.A.T. teams and what not shooting suspects. Anyway, he has a great analytical mind. Also, he has sunglasses. If someone got in a legal dispute with him, he be like, “That would be a matter for…” Dramatically puts on his sunglasses. “…the Supreme Court.” Steps off to the side while a song by The Who starts to play.

Well, that’s all the ideas I have for Attorney General. It’s kinda a boring job. Maybe it would be more interesting if the Attorney General got some sort of jet copter so he could fly around and quickly enforce laws. The jet copter should have missiles. “Aiee! It’s the Attorney General!” criminals would yell upon site of his jet copter breaking up their drug dealing. Now that’s U.S. justice!

    Comment by Frank J — August 30, 2007 @ 12:39 am

In the REAL WORLD the Iraqi government is supposed to give up to 80% of their oil revenues to the top Western oil companies, bin Laden and his men have been sitting comfortably in Pakistan for almost six years, one million have died in Iraq, four million Iraqis are refugees, American taxpayers will have to pay $2.2 Trillion for this war, it has made us less secure, and Iraq had nothing to do with 9/11, al Qaeda, and no WMD.

  100. Frank J Says:

On Meet the Press in June 2006, Tim Russert asked Murtha to respond to a question that Karl Rove had asked rhetorically in a recent speech. After noting that Murtha had called for U.S. troops to “get out of Iraq and go to another country”, Rove asked: “What country would take us? What country would say after the United States cut and run from Iraq, what country in the Middle East would say ‘Yeah, paint a big target on our back and then you’ll cut and run from us?’” Mr. Murtha named Kuwait, Qatar and Bahrain, three small countries in which U.S. troops were based during the march on Baghdad, but then added: “We can go to Okinawa. We can redeploy there almost instantly.”[

  101. corsair Says:

It’s possible Bush will surprise everybody by offering significant troop withdrawals based on his commanders’ advice next month. Bush might be setting up a scenario where he can “blame” his commanders for his defeat. Remember that everybody was surprised when Bush fired Rumsfeld. Only one week before firing Rumsfeld, Bush reassured everyone that he would never fire him. Same goes with the Harriet Miers nomination, the Gonzales resignation and other issues on which Bush claimed he would not compromise. After all his “tough” talk, Bush often caves-in to opposing public pressure.

US debt first 200 years, ending 1981, equaled $0.9 Trillion. US debt after twelve years of Reagan and GHWB equaled $4.1 Trillion.

Clinton’s eight years was greatest sustained economic growth in nation’s history. Twenty-two million jobs created. From record deficits to record surpluses, every year a big improvement. Zero troops killed. 65% approval ratings. Dow up 350%. Unemployment dropped from 8% to 3.9%. etc., etc.

Profits went illegally to the terrorist drug dealers The Contras.

  115. Martin Gifford Says:

“… top commanders are divided over what course to pursue in Iraq…”

The way to end the Iraq problem is for the leaders to apologise for treating the Middle East like a piece of cake to be divided and as a battle ground to be exploited. This will build moral authority. Working to improve places like Africa would also build moral authority.

With that moral authority, we can engage the cooperation of other nations to resolve the issues constructively.

War, dictatorship and terrorism should be banned and an international police force and political system established to protect people from these problems.

By the way, I don’t think the people who invaded Iraq and support the war are evil. I think they were incompetent and ignorant. They were stuck in two old untrue beliefs:

    1. war is a valid tool of government
    2. what’s good for America is good for the world.

    Reality:

    1. war is the worst crime.
    2. what’s good for the world is good for America.

Your relatives ride the Special bus, Frank. You don’t know any soldiers. You don’t know any history, or any facts about government. All you actually know is how to lie, mostly to yourself. You are a weakling, a fraud, and a retarded antiAmerican. You are weak enough to not be any danger to anyone, but you’re still antiAmerican to your bones. All of your bullshit is proven as a lie when you are afraid to back up your president by enlisting and standing with the troops, instead of cheerleading their deaths and the destruction of their families and home lives. You distract and misdirect, you are incapable of an honest answer to a direct question, because an honest answer would go against all of your fantasy beliefs in the great god bush, the most inept and destructive leader America has seen in her brief history. standing on the shoulders of mental midgets like nixon and reagan, not to mention ford and bush1 (talk about idiots!), bush has weakened America to a dangerous point, where even his military is turning against him. This may save us in the long run, since he deserves a good fragging, but no matter what, you and the GOP are now hated around the world and here at home. Hated and vilified, held up as examples of corruption of mind and spirit, an embarrassment and source of shame. Congratulations on your hate-mongering and cowardice, you really are the expert.

Why did Bush give bin Laden and his men a very easy exit from Tora Bora to Pakistan and then leave him there for almost six years?

    Comment by Keith — August 30, 2007 @ 12:38 am

Richard Clarke of the president’s National Security Council said: “Gen. Franks and the president can deny it until the cows come home, but they made a mistake. They did let him [Osama] go away.”

CIA analyst for the Middle East, Michael Scheuer, said: “The [Afghan] people we bought, the people Mr. Tenet said we would own, let Osama bin Laden escape from Tora Bora in eastern Afghanistan into Pakistan.”

Gary Bernsten, the CIA official in Afghanistan in 2001, said the Bush administration ignored his repeated requests to send ground forces in the hunt for Osama. He said, “I had meetings with the military on the ground there [in Afghanistan]. First we drafted a document which indicated what sort of offensive operations we were taking, where we were going to conduct in Tora Bora. I presented those to the senior officer in the country, who had no interest in looking at it, which sort of surprised me …. I specifically requested to him that we needed to put [in] ground forces. More than once I stated that, and I wrote it, and I documented my requests back to my organization. History will vindicate me if anyone says I’m not telling the truth. Eventually these things will be declassified. They can see the nature of my requests and the dates on those requests, so I’m confident.”

Well said and you’re correct. It is amazing to me that so few people whether a wingnut or a libtard, bother to pick up the phone, type an email, let alone a letter to the morons in office. Even those who are a local phone call away. I routinely call my wingnut Congressman to let him know why I’m voting against him and even more frequently I contact either by phone or email, my libtard Congressmen and Senators to let them know why I’m not contributing to their campaign or their party. My sense is that few of us do and so the morons in office on both sides of the political aisle generally react solely to the idiot news. Which is like reading newspapers published in WWII to gleen how the country feels.

I thought it most interesting that the blog sites in general broke the story of Bedtime for Gonzo well ahead of the idiot news and nailed it 100%. On Monday the idiot news was loudly proclaiming how it was a big surprise. Surprise only to those who depend on the idiot news. I doubt the majority of the morons in office can type let alone get their news off the net as they are far too busy primping themselves for the next photo op.

Iraq seeks long-term security agreement with US — Zebari

BAGHDAD, Aug 30 (KUNA) — Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari said Thursday that his country will work on sealing a long-term security agreement with the US in the coming year, after the lapse of the UN agreement over the presence of the Multi-National Force (MNF) in Iraq.
Speaking at a press conference, Zebari said the recent agreement between Iraqi politicians included a clause on the Iraqi government’s readiness to enter a long-term security agreement with the US, and “this will help us and our coalition friends to work together with greater freedom in the security field.” He added, “At the end of this year, the UN will revise the presence of the MNF in Iraq and we will work for issuing a new Security Council resolution over a new, joint security arrangement.” In this respect, the foreign minister said his country wished for the extension of the MNF mission to be linked to a long-term partnership and entering detailed talks on new security arrangements.
He said that such arrangements required great effort and would be a step toward boosting Iraq’s sovereignty, but noted that it was still early to discuss the establishment of American bases in Iraq.
Iraq, he said, was in need of such security agreements because its security capabilities remained week.
On a different noted, the foreign minister said an extended meeting of Iraq’s neighbors would be held at the level of experts in Baghdad during the first week of September.
He added that preparations were being made for hosting this meeting, which would include Iraq’s neighbors, the five permanent members of the UN, and the G-8.
The experts will look into progress made by the three committee formed during the meeting in Sharm El-Sheikh on energy, security and immigrants, he said.
They will also look into preparations for the ministerial conference that will be hosted by Istanbul at a later date, the foreign minister added.
Moreover, Zebari mentioned the continued Iranian shelling of Iraqi locations on joint borders, saying that this had become a daily happening and that residential areas in Sulaimaniya and Irbil were being targeted.
The Iraqi government has voiced its protest over these attacks and summoned on Tuesday the Iranian ambassador to deliver a memorandum of protest over this issue, demanding an immediate suspension of operations so as not to harm bilateral relations, he explained.
Iraq stands ready to discuss all issues with Iran in the spirit of cooperation, he underscored.
On Tuesday, the Iraqi Foreign Ministry had issued a statement in which it called on Iran to stop shelling Kurdish areas in northern Iraq, warning that this could harm bilateral relations.
The statement said more than 450 Kurdish families in 20 villages had been evacuated because of the shelling. (end) ahh.ema KUNA 301154 Aug 07NNNN

IAEA criticizes US military deal with Mideast

(With photos) VIENNA, Aug 30 (KUNA) — US military deals with its Middle Eastern allies will not help the security situation in the region, said International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) General Director Mohammad El-Baradei on Thursday.
Speaking to an Austrian “Profile” weekly magazine, Baradei described the US decision to provide Israel, Egypt and Saudi Arabia with military equipment as “unhelpful,” adding that it would actually fuel tensions in the region and contribute to further aggravation of its security situation.
Spending such resources on fighting poverty and promoting education and health would be a much better way of helping the people of the region, Baradei was quoted as saying.
Baradei’s remarks followed the US decision to offer USD 30 billion in military assistance to Israel, as well as UAD 20 billion to Egypt and the GCC. The deal, comprising large quantities of state-of-the-art weaponry, is to protect US allies from threats by other regional countries. (end) amg.hb KUNA 300932 Aug 07NNNN
