Rep. Pete Hoekstra (R-MI) today became the first lawmaker to call for Sen. Larry Craig’s (R-ID) resignation. Hoekstra called for him to step down “as his conduct throughout this matter has been inappropriate for a U.S. senator.”
So is that it? Playing footsies in a public bathroom will get you ousted from the Senate in a hurry? Other senators don't have to worry, even though they've taken payola from lobbyists, taken part in shedding the constitution, taken part in the lie of going to war in Iraq, etc., etc.
I call for Senator Edward Kennedy to resign -- a long-overdue resignation at that -- since pleading guilty to leaving the scene of an accident represents innappropriate conduct as a U.S. senator.
Liberals, don't evade this one by claiming it was a long time ago, because he's still in the Senate -- riding on a 40-year free pass you've given him because of his name and his party.
Don't reveal yourselves as preaching a double-standard.

Good to see the GOP Religious values elected officials are really showing loyalty to the party members. Mitt kicked Senator Craig out real quick after he used him to get voters. Mitt even say Senator Craig and Bill Clinton were just a like. Mitt needed to say that so some voters would think he is the new Jesus. Senator Craig is seeing how the loyalty really works in his party. But at lease his buddies kept his secret for over 25 years so he could continue tapping in men's rooms for men.
No hypocrisy on gay issues.......Republicans aren't supporting him at all. What surprises me is that the Gay Community isn't rallying around him and arguing for "diversity" in the Senate? They have a new poster child. Just like the anti-war effort has Rosie O'Donnell and Sean Penn.

As a liberal, I agree with you. Ted should have resigned then.
I think it might have been that we were less stringent with accountability of our congressional representatives then. Affairs were not even published in the press. There were huge cover-ups in the behavior area.
Today, we seem ready to pounce at anything.
The only reason that Hoekstra's calling for Craig's resignation is because Republicans ARE the party of moral/family values, and this code is so stringent that Repubs like Hoekstra even want to exclude fellow Repubs if there's merely the appearance of a misdeed, instead of actual proof. Contrast this with Demoncratic criminal-abetters who tolerate pedophiles/felons/traitors/ to stay in their party and even laud them. Some notorious examples of Demoncratic aiding and abetting of misconduct include: illegal, homosexual intercourse and rape between Gerry Studds in the 80s and a 17-year-old page (underage in Mass.). Bawney Frank who's homosexual boyfriend rang a prostitution ring out of his apartment (Demoncrats didn't censure him and kept voting this scum back into office). Will Jefferson with his $100000 in his freezer. BJ Clinton chronically abusing his power to sexually harass ANYTHING in a skirt (not to mention take advantage of a naive intern). That said, Hoekstra is too PC for demanding Craig's resignation since all Craig did is plead guilty to a misdemeanor, not any lewd, sexual conduct.
Don’t reveal yourselves as preaching a double-standard.

By double standard, you mean a homophobic senator that's having gay sex in public restrooms while preaching family values? Is that the kind of double standard you were referring to?
Or were you referring to the double standard of you smearing Democrats not found guilty of a crime while defending CONVICTED republicans? Would THAT be the kind of double standard you were referring to? Or is the reality of exactly how clueless and stupid looking you are not settled in - because you're too busy 'bashing' liberals to realize you're the one who's getting bashed in?

Kennedy was in shock, as is often the case in situations like this. Craig has no excuse for being a hypocrite and a gay bashing self loathing individual.
I think Sen. Craig should demonstrate the same determination and bravado that has been shown by other predecessors, and remain in his position well past the point that most would call for his departure (ala Wolfowitz, Rumsfeld, Rove,Gonzales, and other Neocons too numerous to mention in this space).
With regard to his men's room behavior in Minneapolis, he apparently picked up a fairly safe location, since there had many complaints about similar behavior in that area, which was the reason the plainclothes officer was there in the first place.
Sen. Craig did exhibit a rather unusual sequence of behaviors during the incident in question: looking through the crack of the stall door for two minutes at a time, placing items under the door of his stall to block the view of those who are outside of it, touching his foot to that of the person in the stall next to him, and running his hand under the partition. What do you suppose the odds are that he engages in the same behavior when he is touring rural locations in Idaho?
