Conservative ‘Homophobic Hypocrisy’ In Craig Scandal

vitterlookdown.jpg Earlier this month, Sen. Larry Craig (R-ID) pleaded guilty to “misdemeanor disorderly conduct” for “lewd” sexual conduct in a men’s public restroom. In July, Sen. David Vitter (R-LA) also admitted to the “sin” of a sexual crime — frequenting an escort service run by the DC Madam.

To date, five Republican lawmakers have called on Sen. Larry Craig (R-ID) to resign:

Sen. Norm Coleman (R-MN): “Senator Craig pled guilty to a crime involving conduct unbecoming a senator. He should resign.”

Sen. John McCain (R-AZ): “I believe that he — that he pled guilty and he had the opportunity to plead innocent. So I think he should resign.”

Rep. Peter Hoekstra (R-MI): “However, he also represents the Republican Party, and I believe that he should step down as his conduct throughout this matter has been inappropriate for a U.S. senator.”

Rep. Mark Souder (R-IN): “While additional concerns are being raised, Senator Craig already demonstrated that he is unfit to serve in the U.S. Congress when he pled guilty. I believe that he needs to step down.”

Reps. Jeff Miller (R-FL), Ginny Brown-Waite (R-FL), Bobby Jindal (R-LA), and Ron Lewis (R-KY): [A handful of Republicans] urged Craig to step down…including Jeff Miller and Ginny Brown-Waite of Florida, Mark Souder of Indiana, Bobby Jindal of Louisiana and Ron Lewis of Kentucky.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) has also stripped Craig of his committee leadership positions and called for a Senate ethics investigation into the affair.

In contrast, none of these nine lawmakers reprimanded Vitter after he admitted to soliciting a prostitute. He even received “‘thunderous applause‘ from Senate GOP colleagues during a policy lunch held a few days after his admission.” Matt Foreman of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force explains the hypocrisy:

Let’s see – one Republican senator is involved in soliciting sex from a man and the Republican leadership calls for a Senate investigation and yanks the rug from underneath him. Another Republican senator admits to soliciting the services of a female prostitute and there’s not only no investigation but the senator is greeted with a standing ovation by his Republican peers. What explains the starkly different responses? I’d say rank and homophobic hypocrisy.

The nonpartisan watchdog group CREW has called on Vitter to resign his committee seat. Glenn Greenwald has more on the right-wing blogosphere’s hypocrisy.

iirc, hannity, of all people, wanted vitter to resign.

  2. blogenfreude says:

Not so much homophobic hypoicrisy as the fact that Vitter would be replaced by a Democrat.

  3. Pippen says:

But isn’t Craig convicted of a crime? The difference is there right…

(I know soliciting a prostitute is a crime but hes not convicted)

  4. martha says:

As was pointed out yesterday, beyond the homophobia is the fact that Vitter comes from a state with a Dem governor, while Craig comes from a state with a Repug gov.

Double standards for many, many reasons…

Vitter committed adultry, Craig was trolling for sex in a public restroom.

    These are not small differences.

  7. Art says:

It probably has something to do with the fact that Craig is from Idaho and it has a Republican governor who would most likely appoint a Republican replacement.
Vitter is from Louisiana. It has a Democratic governor.

  8. cynicalgirl says:

#2 and #4, so they put politics before their “values”. Or did they put their homophobia before their “values”? In either case, it says a lot about the party.

Vitter, like Craig, admitted to committing a crime.

  14. GSD says:

Vitter paid for sex. That is a criminal act.

But he’s in a state with a Democratic Governor, so the morality of that sin sits back seat to the morality of having a Democratic Governor replace Vitter’s seat.

    United States Senator Larry Craig

    Re: Minneapolis Airport restroom escapade

    Dear Senator Craig:

I have religiously followed the reports regarding your recent arrest at the Minneapolis Airport and subsequent guilty plea. With all due respect, I found your explanations to be quite novel to say the least.

I am of the firm conviction that the sexual preferences of my fellow citizens are a personal matter. Put simply, if you agree to not look into my bedroom window, I’ll agree to reciprocate. My opinion on this matter was confirmed in an article I wrote last year in regards to Dr. James Dobson (Focus on the Family) titled “Dr. James Dobson and Gay Bashing 101.”

I personally find those who engage in hyperbolic hypocrisy to be particularly offensive individuals. It’s too bad that everyone doesn’t heed the wise words of my now deceased father whose mantra was “Mind your own business.” If everyone did, especially as it relates to matters of personal choice, I think we’d all be better off, right?

Using the Idaho Statesman as a whipping boy for your problems seems to be rather disingenuous at best. If you feel compelled to make repeated visits to the men’s room at airports throughout the county while tap dancing, etc., that’s fine with me.

I believe the experience would be even more enjoyable if we could persuade the Federal Aviation Administration to agree to pipe in some appropriate music at the men’s restrooms throughout the nation. If we could, then I would suggest they pipe in that ol’ ditty from yesteryear “The Hokey Pokey,” which goes something like this:

You put your left foot in (adjoining stall)
You put your left foot out
You put your left foot in
And you shake it all about
    You do the Hokey-Pokey
    And turn yourself around
    That’s what it’s all about!

You put your left hand in (adjoining stall)
You put your left hand out
You put your left hand in
And you shake it all about
    You do the Hokey-Pokey
    And you turn yourself around
    That’s what it’s all about!

You put your whole head in (adjoining stall)
    You put your head out
    You put your head in
And you shake it all about
    You do the Hokey-Pokey
    And you turn yourself around
    That’s what it’s all about!

You put your whole self in (adjoining stall)
You put your whole self out
You put your whole self in
And you shake it all about
    You do the Hokey-Pokey
    And you turn yourself around
    That’s what it’s all about!

Thanks for your time and attention to this matter.

If Vitter was having straight sex with a prostitute in a public restroom then he should go too.

Another difference is that Vitter admitted that what he did was wrong, has shown remorse and asked his wife for forgivness.

Craig has done none of these things, in fact, he denies his guilt even after pleading guilty in court.

Do you feel that Vitter hasn’t commited a crime or that his actions were not unbecoming of an elected official? 31. missmolly says:

Let’s examine the rationalization of “Craig is bad – Vitter is OK” position by apologists on the GOP side.

    1) Craig’s misdemeanor involved gay sex; Vitter’s involved heterosexual sex (we won’t get into diaper perversions here). Hetero sex is OK, gay sex is not.

    2) Craig broke the law in public; Vitter did it behind the privacy of closed doors. The issue here is general sordidness.

    3) Craig got arrested; Vitter didn’t. It’s a matter of whether you get caught or not.

I suspect all these troll talking points are mere window dressing for the REAL reason — Craig can safely be replaced with another Republican; Vitter could likely be replaced with a Democrat.

  32. veritas says:

Cynion: For the record, they’re both “criminals” under the law. Prostitution and solicitation thereof is still a crime in this country. A good place for you to begin your quest for education would be US Law: 101, dude.

  33. veritas says:

What Vitter did is not “okay” by any stretch of the law or one’s twisted imagination. Besides, since he is a married man, it becomes double hypocritical and criminal.

Wild essay. How long did it take you to compose it?

  35. A Patriot Acting says:

    Cynicon Implant-
No they both broke the law. The level of perversion is a tittilating discussion topic, but what it comes down to is they BOTH BROKE THE LAW AND ADMITTED IT! Vitter wouldn’t have mentioned his daliences had he not been uncovered. Craig did the same. Both acts were illegal. Both men admit their guilt. I guess illegaly paying prostitutes to change your diapers is isn’t considered perverted enough for the Repubs to denounce him. Why don’t you admit it’s only because they would lose a seat to a Dem?

  37. veritas says:

Cynion: The “public” angle has zippo to do with the law for openers. Solicitation of a prostitute is a criminal action and it’s done behind closed doors. Still patently illegal.

Vitter’s actions were unbecoming and probably illegal, but they simply were not as degenerate as Craig’s toilet romps.

    That’s all I’m saying.

If Vitter’s constituants want him gone, then fine with me. But we know Craig’s constituants want him gone.

  41. veritas says:

what I found compelling in Craig’s “I’m not gay” diatribe is the fact that this twisted individual actually believes that being gay has anything to do with being a criminal. Then the hypocrisy to propose anti-gay legislation when he engages in gay sex is really beyond any sane comprehension. Does he hate himself so much that he finds it imperative to “put on a facade” for his other pervert congressmen? Does he believe his own hypocrisy? At the very least, this guy needs a good psychiatric examination, some pharmacological assistance for his delusions, and an exit, stage right, from Congress and into the nearest prison.

Let’s get something straight (so to speak). I do not think Craig should be kicked out of the Senate. I do not think Vitter should be kicked out of the Senate. I’m addressing GOP hypocrisy in their different way of handling the two issues. The only people who want to banish Craig are Republicans, who are trying to appease their homo-hating base.

Clinton’s personal life was between him and Hillary. I wasn’t outraged by his behavior, I was outraged that the GOP Congress chose to make it an impeachable issue. Along with most Americans.

I am not outraged by Craig or Vitter either. I am outraged by the rank hypocrisy of the GOP – again.

The only people who don’t seem to have a meaningful moral compass are the GOP – Clinton bad, Vitter good. Craig bad, Vitter good.

There is another similarity between Craig and Vitter besides the fact that they both admitted to criminal acts. Craig mailed in his admission to a court official, while Vitter made his admission after being confronted with irrefutable evidence. So the second point in common is that both had hoped that their crimes would go unreported, and only faced the public after their acts became known. As far as I am concerned, both Craig and Vitter have brought the same amount of disrepute on the Senate.

    Let’s get some facts straight:
Soliciting services from a prostitute is illegal.
Mutual masturbation in a public place is illegal.
The ultimate hypocrisy here is that both Senators played the “holier than thou” crap during President Clinton’s liasons, yet by comparison, their “adventures” are not only worse, they. are. illegal!

My personal opinion, they both should resign, not because of their sexual deviations or adulteries, but because of their blatant hypocrisy to the voters.

Scarborough’s aid was found dead in his office around the same time, and he was accused of having an affair with her, but he quietly resigned from Congress after his wife filed for divorce. All of the media attention was on Condit while Scarborough skated away — and now claims the moral high ground on his daily MSNBC show.

Interesting that Vitter and Scarborough are very good friends. They both seem to know how to slither their way out of responsibility and accountability while stepping to the side and letting someone else get pummeled for being accused of doing the same thing as them.

By the way, I’ve been thinking a lot about the “MSM” and realized HEY the abbreviation stands for “mainstream media” and “men who have sex with other men.”

I’m starting to think there is nothing wrong with using “MSM” to describe both “mainstream media” and guys like Senator Larry Craig.

For all those confused with the abbreviation “MSM” let me define it for you:

    1. MSM – stands for “men who have sex with men” and “mainstream media”
    2. IMPORTANT TO REMEMBER: MSM stands for BOTH “MAINSTREAM MEDIA” and “MEN WHO HAVE SEX WITH OTHER MEN”
    3. “MSM” consists of mostly men who are “tools” of the Republican party. Get it? “tools”
    4. “MSM” lie to themselves and actually believe their own lies. The Maintream Media believes they provide the public with “fair and balanced” reporting, and “men who have sex with men” think they are “straight.”
    5. “MSM” are both virulently Republican, and anti-gay and anti-equal rights for gay men who dare to be honest and “bust their cover.”
    6. “MSM” are both secretive and shadowy loose organizations of Republican men.
    7. Many MSM “men who have sex with men” make major decisions for the MSM “mainstream media”
    8. MSM have been known to give blow jobs to other Republicans on the “down low.” The only difference is the “mainstream media” does it live on national television interviews, and “men who have sex with men” do it in airport bathrooms.
    9. MSM – “Mainstream media” and “men who have sex with men” are whores in every sense. Both corporate whores, and just plain WHORES!
    10. MSM – the “Mainstream Media” and “men who have sex with men” have HIDDEN AGENDAS. They claim one thing, “I love Jesus” or “We report the truth” but are simply hiding the fact they are voting or influencing others to vote to protect the STATUS QUO or their ability to successfully secretly WHORE themselves.

That’s enough comparisons for now for the “MSM” but you are welcome to add your own!

Conservatives values voters DO NOT celebrate immoral, perverted behaviour. We understand people are not perfect – and we do not NORMALIZE perversions. We don’t try to move the sexuality immorality yardstick for “tolerance” sake. We appreciate Guiliani’s 9/11 experience and newt’s insight…..and we will not elect them. How she basically says all “normal” people like her etc. I think it is a delusional quality. It is cute for short periods of time, but gets stale rather quickly. also notice the numerous misspellings despite her “Private” schooling.

Another good one to get her started on is the “global warming scam”. I notice that despite the fact she dismisses most liberals as pot smoking hippies, they seem to have an uncommon amount of power to affect governments, and the ability to produce far reaching conspiracies, that would make Machievelli proud. Not a lot of cognitive strength in her life.

    Probably not.
    Comment by Leftside Annie

The problem with homosexual perverts like Larry Craig is they prey on the conservative demographics of their states and pander to those people. I could care less what gay people do in private – it’s none of my business….but please quit trying to tell me how normal they are….it’s like standing at the easel with brushes only and no paint. You don’t have the right tools.

Krazny – Only a “useful idiot” like yourself would transpose a pathetic insult into a topic line….Darn, those state schools can only do so much!

ROFL nice evasion. I can only laugh at you and your pathetic life. I don’t know why the nurses at the home let you use the computer so much, but I can’t imagine it is good for you blood pressure. Make sure to take your meds, and get outside for a bit.

  234. Jason M. Hendler says:

You don’t see any difference between lewd activity in a public restroom and the use of an escort service? I don’t believe it’s about homosexuality, just the indiscretion and inappropriateness of the behaviour in a public restroom.

If Vitter had solicited a woman in/outside a woman’s restroom, he would be receiving the same treatment.

  235. Leftside Annie says:

Poor little Apphie. I’m really sorry that so very many of your highly moral, family values, staunch Christian, gay-bashing heroes are being revealed for the ugly repressed hypocrites they truly are.

    It must make you crazy.

    Ooops. Too late.

That train left the station years ago. This is a woman who made a joke about her deceased child. I think someone has it around in case we need to post the context of it. She needs some serious help.

  237. Leftside Annie says:

    Yikes. That’s just …sick.

  238. Vincennes says:

Why didn’t they call for Vitter’s resignation? Because I bet their names or the names of their loved ones, friends and/or colleagues are probably in the Madam’s little black book. Either that or they’re just effing hypocrities. Either way they all deserve to resign for being self-serving idiots.

One suspects that the Repulsivescum conned’selfservatives’ hypocrisy…

…has its roots in the same- mostly male-dominated- view…

…that two (beautiful) women engaged in sexual activity with each other…

…is not really considered “gay” sex…

I wonder if the celebration of non-morality by progs is designed to make them “feel OK about themselves”? Hmmm…
    Comment by mighty aphrodite — August 30, 2007 @ 12:56 pm

Please tell me, oh, mighty hypocrite, what non-morality I celebrate. Unlike the slutty-looking wife of your favorite candidate Fred Thompson, I have never had my salary garnished or a lien put on my assets, because I actually pay all my bills and for the most part on time. (I must admit there were a few times that I miscalculated the amount I thought I should have had in my bank account by a certain date, or that the due date of a bill simply slipped my mind, but I’ve never been so late that legal action was threatened–let alone taken.)
Since you have also brought up Ted Kennedy’s accident for the upteempth, I must say you have “great taste” in first ladies, real and potential. Laura Bush, who, like Senator, also caused a fatal car accident in the 1960s. And Jeri Thompson, who has had her salary ordered garnished three times for unpaid bills. (The last one remains unpaid because she stopped working at the place from where her salary was to be taken.)

  242. Lora says:

#110 – Before Craig’s gay cruising in the men’s room (God, what a gross thought!) I had never heard of his perverted lifestyle.
Weak attempt on your part….please try again!
    Comment by mighty aphrodite — August 30, 2007 @ 12:59 p

An even weaker excuse on your part, mighty hypocrite/vapid venus. Your admitted ignorance of unsavory rumors about Craig ’s lifestyle doesn’t mean they didn’t exist from long ago, toodlie.

  243. Lora says:

I heard an interesting reason why the Republicans are so horrified at the bathroom man on man sex vs the pay a prostitute. It goes against their conservative capitalist rules. He should have offerred money.”
    Comment by CalGal

This is close to the point I would like to make, but I’ve been late in getting to this thread. I myself have wondered if the Republiscum are true homophobes or simply don’t mind Vitter’s case because it involved a monetary transaction. After all, no Rethug, as far as I can recall, has made a fuss about the many nocturnal visits to the White House by gay hooker/bogus journalist Jeff Gannon/James Guckert on dates when no press conferences were held. Could it be that the G(reedy)O(ily)P(erverts) simply have no problem with paid-for sex?

You’re much too nice. There’s nothing “grand” about the GOP. How about “Greedy Old Perverts” or “Group of Perverts?”

  246. Steven Mosher says:

What really smacks of hypocrisy is the many Republicans senators and congress members were aware of the rumored acts of Sen. Craig, just as they were with Sen. Foley, and others (both dem and rep).

Only when the information is made public, the are concerned it is a preceived condemnation upon them as a party, and they immediately distance themselves from it. Only when light shines on these dark placed in the GOP do they suddenly start their moral condemnation.. and not before even when they know about it. Its all a matter or perception, and if all is percieved as well, that all is well, so don’t rock the boat.

This is my primary reason for not trusting Republicans with the future of our country. They are concerned only with the welfare of themselves as a party, and not our country as a whole. And they are mostly Men.. More women in positions of power is the way to go. One of the main reasons I am a Democrat. (cept Im not sold on Hillary at all, but thats another post)

And there is very little distinction between the two acts of Vitter and Craig. They both solicited for sex (one paid – which is illegal in most states) and the other was “cruising for gay sex” which in the minds of most Republicans is way worse because it is “Gay Sex”, not that it is more criminal than the other (also, he was charged with a misdom

Had that person been a female… would that change the party’s opinion of their fallen comrade? I bet is would.

Face it.. if it has “gay” anywhere on it, the Repugs see these action as “worse” that heterosexual sex. And then there are those who say ” but what about the children”? I knew that would be in one of these posts. Talk about rhetoric.. they don’t give a shit about children if it gets in the way of their goals, which often has nothing to do with children. If they were concerned about children, or anyone for that matter, the would get back the being that party of small government, and stop trying to privatize and profit on government functions.
    But I digress.

And keep in mind folks, Republicans created this “sexual standard” by going after Clinton and holding him morally accountable for his sexual scandal (which was not illegal) you have raised the bar and and the Reps you are being held to the same standard and falling like flies. Whats good for the goose..

So, off with both their metaphorical heads. And lets get past this stupid debate that I think Repugs specifically find titalating, but at the same time, abhorant. I think this is a symptom of a sexually repressive party who members exhibit the personality traits that got Craig in the trouble in the first place. They say one thing in public and do another in private. Until someone finds out, then they are sorry (because they were caught) apologize to their family, go into rehab and are never heard from again, or deny and lie until they have no choice but to face that facts, and even then, just like our on Administration, they just ignore and keep on doing it anyway regardless of the opinion of the people.

  247. missy says:

Comparing Vitter and Craig is apple and oranges. Not because of gay sex VS hetero sex, but because Craig plead guilty to a crime. If Vitter had been arrested, he to may be facing a harsh fan base. I agree that it is all sex, but public sex is a bit different too. I guess what the politicians need to learn is how NOT to get caught.

    Peace to all

  248. Ian McGarrett says:

I had to use the crapper but there was some creepy guy in one of the stalls. I wanted to call him out but figured that would cause a ruckus when all I wanted to do was take a dump so I took a look through the crack in the door and made sure he saw my ugly puss then sat down in the stall right next to him and started playing footsie in hopes the SOB would leave and I could take a crap in peace.

  249. SC says:

Let’s keep in mind that Craig did NOT have bathroom sex. He apparently behaved in a manner that indicated interest. In other circumstances, that might be considered flirtation. This arrest strikes me as both sex-phobic and homophobic. What was the guy’s crime? I repeat, there was NO sexual act. Further, he was entrapped. (If the police officer wasn’t interest, he could have moved his foot away. No assault was reported.)

Craig is a hypocrite, rather pathetic, and apparently deeply closeted. His exposure does expose the GOP as the party of hypocrisy. And though some of us might consider being Republican a crime in and of itself, I don’t see what the criminal act is (at least in terms of the bathroom incident).

At this rate, straight couples who flirt in a bar — or same sex bathrooms for that matter — could face arrest as well.

  250. SC says:

whoops meant to say non-gender specific bathrooms

  251. blogbob says:

    Ringo-
Why the DC police haven’t charged him with an actual crime in no way diminishes the fact that he did COMMIT A CRIME and ADMITTED it. Either the Repubs are homophobes or it’s simply to keep Vitters Republican seat. Either way it’s typical Rightie hypocracy. Do you feel that Vitter hasn’t commited a crime or that his actions were not unbecoming of an elected official? Remember that consensual sex (Clinton) is LEGAL and prostitution and public bathroom sex are not.

    Patriot:

You haven’t seen Nancy Pelosi or Steny Hoyer calling for the resignation of William “How’d that cash get in my freezer?” Jefferson, have you?

Hypocrisy knows no political bounds. Each group will do unto others what is necessary to retain power. That’s why all Federal politcal jobs (Prez, VP, Senators, Congressmen, Political Appointees) should be term-limited.

I am a Dem, but truth must be told where it exists.
