Earlier this month, Sen. Larry Craig (R-ID) pleaded guilty to “misdemeanor disorderly conduct” for “lewd” sexual conduct in a men’s public restroom. In July, Sen. David Vitter (R-LA) also admitted to the “sin” of a sexual crime — frequenting an escort service run by the DC Madam.
To date, five Republican lawmakers have called on Sen. Larry Craig (R-ID) to resign:
Sen. Norm Coleman (R-MN): “Senator Craig pled guilty to a crime involving conduct unbecoming a senator. He should resign.”
Sen. John McCain (R-AZ): “I believe that he — that he pled guilty and he had the opportunity to plead innocent. So I think he should resign.”
Rep. Peter Hoekstra (R-MI): “However, he also represents the Republican Party, and I believe that he should step down as his conduct throughout this matter has been inappropriate for a U.S. senator.”
Rep. Mark Souder (R-IN): “While additional concerns are being raised, Senator Craig already demonstrated that he is unfit to serve in the U.S. Congress when he pled guilty. I believe that he needs to step down.”
Reps. Jeff Miller (R-FL), Ginny Brown-Waite (R-FL), Bobby Jindal (R-LA), and Ron Lewis (R-KY): [A handful of Republicans] urged Craig to step down…including Jeff Miller and Ginny Brown-Waite of Florida, Mark Souder of Indiana, Bobby Jindal of Louisiana and Ron Lewis of Kentucky.
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) has also stripped Craig of his committee leadership positions and called for a Senate ethics investigation into the affair.
In contrast, none of these nine lawmakers reprimanded Vitter after he admitted to soliciting a prostitute. He even received “‘thunderous applause‘ from Senate GOP colleagues during a policy lunch held a few days after his admission.” Matt Foreman of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force explains the hypocrisy:
Let’s see - one Republican senator is involved in soliciting sex from a man and the Republican leadership calls for a Senate investigation and yanks the rug from underneath him. Another Republican senator admits to soliciting the services of a female prostitute and there’s not only no investigation but the senator is greeted with a standing ovation by his Republican peers. What explains the starkly different responses? I’d say rank and homophobic hypocrisy.
The nonpartisan watchdog group CREW has called on Vitter to resign his committee seat. Glenn Greenwald has more on the right-wing blogosphere’s hypocrisy.
iirc, hannity, of all people, wanted vitter to resign.
August 30th, 2007 at 11:20 amNot so much homophobic hypoicrisy as the fact that Vitter would be replaced by a Democrat.
August 30th, 2007 at 11:20 amBut isn’t Craig convicted of a crime? The difference is there right…
(I know soliciting a prostitute is a crime but hes not convicted)
August 30th, 2007 at 11:20 amAs was pointed out yesterday, beyond the homophobia is the fact that Vitter comes from a state with a Dem governor, while Craig comes from a state with a Repug gov.
Double standards for many, many reasons…

August 30th, 2007 at 11:21 amVitter did not plead guilty to a crime, Craig did.
Vitter committed adultry, Craig was trolling for sex in a public restroom.
These are not small differences.
August 30th, 2007 at 11:21 amIt probably has something to do with the fact that Craig is from Idaho and it has a Republican governor who would most likely appoint a Republican replacement.
August 30th, 2007 at 11:22 amVitter is from Louisiana. It has a Democratic governor.
#2 and #4, so they put politics before their “values”. Or did they put their homophobia before their “values”? In either case, it says a lot about the party.
August 30th, 2007 at 11:23 am“Vitter did not plead guilty to a crime, Craig did.”
Vitter, like Craig, admitted to committing a crime.
August 30th, 2007 at 11:23 amcome on! you don’t REALLY expect repugs to be principled! that totally goes against their nature.
hypocrisy (along with lying) is an inherent part of being a repug.
August 30th, 2007 at 11:24 amThere is something especially degenerate about anonymous sex in a public toilet stall, don’t you think?…..especially at an airport where children may be present.
August 30th, 2007 at 11:25 amI think the Repubs have been pretty consistent on shutting down those who are found guilty (or admit guilt) of crimes. Many times even before being found guilty (Delay).

August 30th, 2007 at 11:25 amVitter paid for sex. That is a criminal act.
But he’s in a state with a Democratic Governor, so the morality of that sin sits back seat to the morality of having a Democratic Governor replace Vitter’s seat.

United States Senator Larry Craig
Re: Minneapolis Airport restroom escapade
Dear Senator Craig:
I have religiously followed the reports regarding your recent arrest at the Minneapolis Airport and subsequent guilty plea. With all due respect, I found your explanations to be quite novel to say the least.
I am of the firm conviction that the sexual preferences of my fellow citizens are a personal matter. Put simply, if you agree to not look into my bedroom window, I’ll agree to reciprocate. My opinion on this matter was confirmed in an article I wrote last year in regards to Dr. James Dobson (Focus on the Family) titled “Dr. James Dobson and Gay Bashing 101.â€
I personally find those who engage in hyperbolic hypocrisy to be particularly offensive individuals. It’s too bad that everyone doesn’t heed the wise words of my now deceased father whose mantra was “Mind your own business.†If everyone did, especially as it relates to matters of personal choice, I think we’d all be better off, right?
Using the Idaho Statesman as a whipping boy for your problems seems to be rather disingenuous at best. If you feel compelled to make repeated visits to the men’s room at airports throughout the county while tap dancing, etc., that’s fine with me.
I believe the experience would be even more enjoyable if we could persuade the Federal Aviation Administration to agree to pipe in some appropriate music at the men’s restrooms throughout the nation. If we could, then I would suggest they pipe in that ol’ ditty from yesteryear “The Hokey Pokey,†which goes something like this:
You put your left foot in (adjoining stall)
You put your left foot out
You put your left foot in
And you shake it all about
You do the Hokey-Pokey
And turn yourself around
That’s what it’s all about!
You put your left hand in (adjoining stall)
You put your left hand out
You put your left hand in
And you shake it all about
You do the Hokey-Pokey
And you turn yourself around
That’s what it’s all about!
You put your whole head in (adjoining stall)
You put your head out
You put your head in
And you shake it all about
You do the Hokey-Pokey
And you turn yourself around
That’s what it’s all about!
You put your whole self in (adjoining stall)
You put your whole self out
You put your whole self in
And you shake it all about
You do the Hokey-Pokey
And you turn yourself around
That’s what it’s all about!
Thanks for your time and attention to this matter.

If Vitter was having straight sex with a prostitute in a public restroom then he should go too.
Another difference is that Vitter admitted that what he did was wrong, has shown remorse and asked his wife for forgivness.
Craig has done none of these things, in fact, he denies his guilt even after pleading guilty in court.
August 30th, 2007 at 11:31 amThere is something especially degenerate about anonymous sex in a public toilet stall, don’t you think?…..especially at an airport where children may be present.

There is something pretty degenerate about both, Though sex in public places is pretty bad.

August 30th, 2007 at 11:34 amWhy the DC police haven’t charged him with an actual crime in no way diminishes the fact that he did COMMIT A CRIME and ADMITTED it. Either the Repubs are homophobes or it’s simply to keep Vitters Republican seat. Either way it’s typical Rightie hypocracy. Do you feel that Vitter hasn’t commited a crime or that his actions were not unbecoming of an elected official? Remember that consensual sex (Clinton) is LEGAL and prostitution and public bathroom sex are not.

August 30th, 2007 at 11:36 amLook the Republicans id DC have all gone nuts and they are out-of-control sexually. Their hypocrisy is plain vulgar!
August 30th, 2007 at 11:36 amFor a party who trumpets “family values” as their hallmark, albeit a hypocritical one, the resignation and/or relieving of duties of both Vitter and Craig SHOULD BE a foregone conclusion.
For one who has admitted to criminal behavior, their resignation should be immediate.

August 30th, 2007 at 11:38 amJay Randal: The “temptation” was far too seductive and great for these men who truly believed themselves to be “above the law” since they “could” - at least while their group (GOP) of crooks, liars, and frauds were running the show.
They’ll all get to “pay the price” now for their sins as they are marched off in a jumpsuit. Don’t you love “real justice”?

Any relations to Cantwell of Washington? I like her edgy look.
August 30th, 2007 at 11:39 amLet’s examine the rationalization of “Craig is bad - Vitter is OK” position by apologists on the GOP side.
1) Craig’s misdemeanor involved gay sex; Vitter’s involved heterosexual sex (we won’t get into diaper perversions here). Hetero sex is OK, gay sex is not.
2) Craig broke the law in public; Vitter did it behind the privacy of closed doors. The issue here is general sordidness.
3) Craig got arrested; Vitter didn’t. It’s a matter of whether you get caught or not.
I suspect all these troll talking points are mere window dressing for the REAL reason — Craig can safely be replaced with another Republican; Vitter could likely be replaced with a Democrat.
August 30th, 2007 at 11:40 amCynion: For the record, they’re both “criminals” under the law. Prostitution and solicitation thereof is still a crime in this country. A good place for you to begin your quest for education would be US Law: 101, dude.
August 30th, 2007 at 11:40 amWhat Vitter did is not “okay” by any stretch of the law or one’s twisted imagination. Besides, since he is a married man, it becomes double hypocritical and criminal.

Wild essay. How long did it take you to compose it?
August 30th, 2007 at 11:42 amCynicon Implant-
August 30th, 2007 at 11:42 amNo they both broke the law. The level of perversion is a tittilating discussion topic, but what it comes down to is they BOTH BROKE THE LAW AND ADMITTED IT! Vitter wouldn’t have mentioned his daliences had he not been uncovered. Craig did the same. Both acts were illegal. Both men admit their guilt. I guess illegaly paying prostitutes to change your diapers is isn’t considered perverted enough for the Repubs to denounce him. Why don’t you admit it’s only because they would lose a seat to a Dem?
I intend to visit our friends in N.C. next year. When my small sons need to use a public bathroom in the then I tell them to shout
“Is there a Republican Senator in here?”
first. And rather use the ladies room instead if there is a “yes” for an answer.
August 30th, 2007 at 11:42 amCynion: The “public” angle has zippo to do with the law for openers. Solicitation of a prostitute is a criminal action and it’s done behind closed doors. Still patently illegal.
August 30th, 2007 at 11:42 amIf a legislator cannot restrain themselves from engaging in activities that open the door to extortion/bribery/blackmail, than they cannot serve. Vitter/Craig and anyone else w/ secret waiting to be exposed should be sent packing. This should not be something that is difficult to understand!
August 30th, 2007 at 11:43 amIf the Repubs weren’t so repressed about gays, they wouldn’t have to resort to bathrooms. They could use elevators like heteros. Love in an elevator!
August 30th, 2007 at 11:44 amDo you feel that Vitter hasn’t commited a crime or that his actions were not unbecoming of an elected official? Remember that consensual sex (Clinton) is LEGAL and prostitution and public bathroom sex are not.
Comment by A Patriot Acting
—————————————————————
Vitter’s actions were unbecoming and probably illegal, but they simply were not as degenerate as Craig’s toilet romps.
That’s all I’m saying.
If Vitter’s constituants want him gone, then fine with me. But we know Craig’s constituants want him gone.
August 30th, 2007 at 11:44 amwhat I found compelling in Craig’s “I’m not gay” diatribe is the fact that this twisted individual actually believes that being gay has anything to do with being a criminal. Then the hypocrisy to propose anti-gay legislation when he engages in gay sex is really beyond any sane comprehension. Does he hate himself so much that he finds it imperative to “put on a facade” for his other pervert congressmen? Does he believe his own hypocrisy? At the very least, this guy needs a good psychiatric examination, some pharmacological assistance for his delusions, and an exit, stage right, from Congress and into the nearest prison.
August 30th, 2007 at 11:44 amDoes anyone have the background on Craig’s 1982 problems in Congress having to do with his involvement in the “Sex/Drugs Congressional Page Scandal” by any chance? If so, please share it.
August 30th, 2007 at 11:45 amCraig-the lastest in a verrrrrry long string of the moral values of the GOP- the party of “moral values”. SNARK!!!
August 30th, 2007 at 11:46 amAgree with everyone above who say this hypocrisy is political. Solid GOP seat in Idaho makes it easy to sacrifice Craig and appear to be on the side of morality. Louisiana, not so clear cut, so they couldn’t risk it. Besides, Vitter is just doing what boys do, hence the applause on his return. Of course, no one questions the hypocrisy of arresting the DC Madam, but letting her confessed client go free. Hello?
August 30th, 2007 at 11:46 am#35: Hilarious!! I may adopt the same habit.
August 30th, 2007 at 11:47 amThen again…..some might say that the he should be allowed to remain so that the negative publicity and “participants” (aka the one who was interviewed by the IdahoStatesman who told the details of an encounter with Craig in a bathroom in Union Station)??
The longer Craig remains standing, the more serious the damage he is doing to a GOP which is on it’s last legs anyway….or as Rummy would orate: “in it’s last throes”! Gotta love it.
August 30th, 2007 at 11:47 amNo doubt some of Craig’s sex partners are singing right now! They’ll all have great book deals and become instant millionaires! Sing out!
August 30th, 2007 at 11:48 amNo doubt Hastert is scurrying away due to some baggage he’s got erupting from his closet……as does Boehner. The Foley affair is far from forgotten and Hastert et al will find themselves in Craig’s shoes sooner than later.

I’m addressing GOP hypocrisy in their different way of handling the two issues. The only people who want to banish Craig are Republicans, who are trying to appease their homo-hating base.
Clinton’s personal life was between him and Hillary. I wasn’t outraged by his behavior, I was outraged that the GOP Congress chose to make it an impeachable issue. Along with most Americans.
I am not outraged by Craig or Vitter either. I am outraged by the rank hypocrisy of the GOP - again.

Did you think Gerry Sudds should have resigned after admitting to an affair with a male page?
Did you think Ted Kennedy should have resigned after he murdered Mary Jo?
Do you think Bill Clinton should have resigned after multiple charged him with sex crimes - one even including rape?
Do you think Bill Clinton should have resigned for lying under oath?
Do you think Barney Frank should have resigned for running a male whore ring ??
The fact of the matter is, Craig should resign. Conservatives understand that. Democrats have never stepped down when they get caught with their pants down because their IMMORAL base tolerates that kind of behavior.

August 30th, 2007 at 12:27 pmThere is another similarity between Craig and Vitter besides the fact that they both admitted to criminal acts. Craig mailed in his admission to a court official, while Vitter made his admission after being confronted with irrefutable evidence. So the second point in common is that both had hoped that their crimes would go unreported, and only faced the public after their acts became known. As far as I am concerned, both Craig and Vitter have brought the same amount of disrepute on the Senate.

August 30th, 2007 at 12:31 pmWhat I find interesting here is the approval for Vitter by our troll du jour, yet the utter disdain for Craig.
Why?
Is it because you fear what secretly you most desire?
Let’s get some facts straight:
Soliciting services from a prostitute is illegal.
Mutual masturbation in a public place is illegal.
The ultimate hypocrisy here is that both Senators played the “holier than thou” crap during President Clinton’s liasons, yet by comparison, their “adventures” are not only worse, they. are. illegal!
My personal opinion, they both should resign, not because of their sexual deviations or adulteries, but because of their blatant hypocrisy to the voters.

August 30th, 2007 at 12:59 pmI’ve been thinking the same thing all week, and I bet Vitter has been hoping no one would make a big deal out the 180 degree differences in their treatments.
It reminds me of Gary Condit and Joe Scarborough. Condit was run out of Congress when his aid went missing and he was accused of having an affair with her. Scarborough’s aid was found dead in his office around the same time, and he was accused of having an affair with her, but he quietly resigned from Congress after his wife filed for divorce. All of the media attention was on Condit while Scarborough skated away — and now claims the moral high ground on his daily MSNBC show.
Interesting that Vitter and Scarborough are very good friends. They both seem to know how to slither their way out of responsibility and accountability while stepping to the side and letting someone else get pummeled for being accused of doing the same thing as them.

August 30th, 2007 at 1:10 pmBy the way, I’ve been thinking a lot about the “MSM” and realized HEY the abbreviation stands for “mainstream media” and “men who have sex with other men.”
I’m starting to think there is nothing wrong with using “MSM” to describe both “mainstream media” and guys like Senator Larry Craig.
For all those confused with the abbreviation “MSM” let me define it for you:
1. MSM - stands for “men who have sex with men” and “mainstream media”
2. IMPORTANT TO REMEMBER: MSM stands for BOTH “MAINSTREAM MEDIA” and “MEN WHO HAVE SEX WITH OTHER MEN”
3. “MSM” consists of mostly men who are “tools” of the Republican party. Get it? “tools”
4. “MSM” lie to themselves and actually believe their own lies. The Maintream Media believes they provide the public with “fair and balanced” reporting, and “men who have sex with men” think they are “straight.”
5. “MSM” are both virulently Republican, and anti-gay and anti-equal rights for gay men who dare to be honest and “bust their cover.”
6. “MSM” are both secretive and shadowy loose organizations of Republican men.
7. Many MSM “men who have sex with men” make major decisions for the MSM “mainstream media”
8. MSM have been known to give blow jobs to other Republicans on the “down low.” The only difference is the “mainstream media” does it live on national television interviews, and “men who have sex with men” do it in airport bathrooms.
9. MSM - “Mainstream media” and “men who have sex with men” are whores in every sense. Both corporate whores, and just plain WHORES!
10. MSM - the “Mainstream Media” and “men who have sex with men” have HIDDEN AGENDAS. They claim one thing, “I love Jesus” or “We report the truth” but are simply hiding the fact they are voting or influencing others to vote to protect the STATUS QUO or their ability to successfully secretly WHORE themselves.
That’s enough comparisons for now for the “MSM” but you are welcome to add your own!
