DoJ IG will continue probe into Gonzales.
Earlier this month, Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy (D-VT) asked “Justice Department’s Inspector General (IG) to investigate potentially false or misleading testimony given by Attorney General Alberto Gonzales during his appearances before various congressional committees.” Despite Gonzales’ resignation, Fine told Leahy today that his office will still assess Gonzales’ contradictory claims. Leahy released the following statement:
I am pleased that Department of Justice Inspector General Glenn Fine will look into my concerns about potentially false, misleading or inappropriate testimony by the Attorney General. I look forward to the Inspector General’s findings on the unprecedented firings of nine United States Attorneys, the improper political hiring of career officials within the Justice Department, the misuse of National Security Letters, and the efforts to bypass the Department’s finding that a warrantless surveillance program was without legal basis.
These actions have eroded the public’s trust and undermined morale within our justice system, from the top ranks to the cop on the beat. The current Attorney General is leaving, but these questions remain. It is appropriate that the Inspector General will examine whether the Attorney General was honest with this and other Congressional committees about these crucial issues. His investigations can help restore independence and accountability, which have been sorely lacking at the Justice Department.

We must be BETTER than the neocons and follow the law and the procedures that make our system of justice work! You can have video evidence of a murder, but that doesn’t mean you put the suspect to death upon arrest. You still perform a thorough investigation and compound all the evidence (not just what seems “obvious”). Only after that is completely finished do you go to trial, in front of a jury of peers. You present your case so that you get the conviction and make it appeal-proof (ie, you play by the rules so it can’ t be overturned on appeal). Only then is justice served. Is it slow? Yes. But I believe in the system when the system is not circumvented like how the neocons are so famous for doing. Innocent until proven guilty IS the law of the land and it should be respected. I thank the good Senator Leahy for showing respect for the rule of law.

Gonzales was caught lying under oath to Congress. Twice. And about a serious matter. The OIG has been investigating this and other stuff for some time now on old Gonzo. The problem was he was in charge. Well now he’s not. And lots of subordinates who still have intact souls and a desire to not be part of the infamous corruption Gonzo and company have bathed in for the last few years, are chomping at the bit to distance themselves by bringing the little runt to justice.

Yes. It’s troll talk. All new administrations ask for the resignations of their US Attorneys. In Clinton’s case, the Justice Dept. was filled with people appointed by GHW Bush. Reagan’s Attorney General also asked for the resignations of all US attorneys who had worked for Carters Justice Dept. GHW Bush asked for all resignations, even though he came from the same administration, as VP.
This is simply one of those ginned-up non-issues invented by the right wing attack machine and you, of course, bought into it hook, line and sinker. It has nothing to do with targeting sitting U.S. Attorneys, during their term for political reasons, which is technically against the law.

Clinton never fired any prosecutors that were investigating cases that could have let straight back to the whitehouse…ie., the defense contractors in bed with Abrahmhoff that Carol Lam was pursuing, for example.
Also, employement in most states is statutorily “at will”.. that means both
employer and employee can terminate the relationship without any reason. However, there are still some reasons you can’t terminate someone for.. ie. thier race. Similarly, the prez can fire prosecutors for no reason, but he can’t fire them, to say, obstruct justice.
Your argument is something akin to “SInce you fired all 100 of the workers at your factory, I didnt do anyting wrong by firing 10 of my workers because they were black”…
figuring all this out is a bit of a logical leap, i admit.. but its the law….the funny thing is, they could have diffused all this by just saying.. ‘we just fired them because we wanted to”.. but instead they try and say “i dont remember, i dont recall”… blah blah.. reagan had a better memory on his deathbed than gonzo does in the prime of life apparently… im surprised someone didnt have to help mr, gonazales into a chair by reminding him how its done first…
