As part of its coverage of Sen. Larry Craig’s (R-ID) arrest for “lewd conduct” in an airport bathroom, the tabloid-y New York Post posted a sidebar questionnaire on its website today asking “are you a gay Senator?” The questions are filled with gay stereotypes like “do you sing showtunes in the car between political events?” and “did you quit the ‘Singing Senators’ because the bow ties didn’t match the seersucker suits?”
As New York magazine’s Daily Intelligencer blog points out, the Post has a history of homophobia, using “archaic adjectives like ’swishy’ and ‘limp-wristed’ to describe gay subjects” and featuring a cartoonist who draws homosexual characters “with exaggerated lips and eyelashes, and one leg kicked flamboyantly upward.”
Honestly, I know a few gay guys who would find this completely funny. I am sorry the NYT chooses to use stereotypes, but c’mon this is funny.
August 30th, 2007 at 3:03 pmSorry NY post my bad.
August 30th, 2007 at 3:03 pmNY Post, not Times. Isn’t that the Murdoch rag?
August 30th, 2007 at 3:04 pmI would like to see the media cover what a hypocrite Craig is…maybe look at his voting record instead of using this scandal to do what they always do – slam all gays. There is a difference of being gay and being a pervert… the Grand Old Perverts must know that by now.
August 30th, 2007 at 3:10 pmNY Post? Isn’t that some kind of supermarket tabloid?
August 30th, 2007 at 3:11 pmCool.
August 30th, 2007 at 3:12 pm” I DO NOT sing show tunes in the car between political events!”
“The NY Post is engaged in a witch hunt against me!”
“The stress of their assault is making me want to strip naked and run through the halls of Congress!!”
August 30th, 2007 at 3:12 pmI’m gay and I think it’s hilarious. I’m not that familiar with the NY Post or any of their supposed homophobic past. But I thought their sidebar questionnaire was humorous, well-written, and appropriate, given the subject. Seems much more anti-Republican-hypocrisy than anti-gay.
August 30th, 2007 at 3:12 pmWhat about:
Do you promote family values and make it the central issue in your political re-election campaigns and do you oppose gay rights legislation at every single opportunity?
That might be a surer sign for Republicans in the closet.

August 30th, 2007 at 3:14 pmI’m pretty sensitive to stereotypes, but each of these questions appears to be aimed specifically at Craig, as he fits each of them.
The questionnaire seems more a parody of Craig than a gay slur.
Craig’s nickname at his fraternity WAS Mother Craig, for example.
August 30th, 2007 at 3:15 pmJeez, what the Post said iss no worse than any episode of Will and Grace. Lighten up.

August 30th, 2007 at 3:23 pmI have a great sense of humor. This does have some elements of humor. It is very funny to see how the republicans eat their own. It’s also funny to see the hypocrisy in vilifying Craig while Vitter’s actions are put back into the closet.
The truth of the matter is Craig pled guilty. Not whether he’s gay or not. That’s another sadly funny point. It’s the right that is making this story stay in the news.

August 30th, 2007 at 3:26 pmLook folks, this is just stupid.
Craig is guilty of only two things: Public disturbance, and being a HUGE target for ridicule.
Ethics investgations are stupid. Gay rights activists jumping all over anyone who is or isn’t the correct flavor of PC is stupid. Hannity’s drunken macho frat boy stories are stupid. You, TP, have been caught being stupid also.
This is a source for humor. The man is getting his proper judgement, in a majorly-homophobic court of public opinion. He’s earned himself the John Rockeresque punching bag award and gets to take it from all sides.
Everything else is in your imagination. Relax, have a soda, and put down the clicker.

Never had anyone try it in my room at the baracks! It was always outside after many drinks had been downed, and away from everyone else. it usually began with “Well, I’ve never tried anything like this, but. . . .”
Generally, my response was “Sorry, dude, I’m not in the mood.” The next few days, they generally avoided me. I guess they realized how it all sounded and didn’t want me to “rub it in their face” so to speak. I never did anything like that. I figured they were just being really drunk.

The right to privacy in your bedroom? Sorry the operative term is “consenting adults” a child at 10 is not an adult. A pretty simple statement do you agree? Saying that by allowing gay men to have rights will lead to the same for pedophiles et al is a slippery slope argument.

August 30th, 2007 at 4:39 pmI gotta agree with Krazny. Most gay people can laugh at themselves just like the rest of us. Rednecks make fun of themselves (Jeff Foxworthy\Larry the Cable Guy, etc) and most Jews laugh at Jewish sterotypes presented in a comical format (can anyone say SPACEBALLS?). What about Queer eye for the straight guy? What about Will and Grace? Lets face it. There are things we all can find harmlessly funny in all races, stereotypes, etc.
Its the spirit its delivered in that can hurt someone or amuse them. And I don’t see anything too mean in this list. Just some typical gay humor describing a persona that is demonstrated by many gay men all over. Like I said. We’ve all seen Queer Eye for the Straight Guy.
August 30th, 2007 at 4:41 pmFox is running a story on their website that is headlined: “Pressure Mounts on Larry Craig to Resign”
Maybe Larry ought to call Lindsey Graham to relieve that pressure. Nyuk, nyuk, nyuk.
August 30th, 2007 at 4:42 pmIts like the Don Imus controversy. Thats a perfect example of taking something the wrong way. Imus was trying to compliment the girls physical prowess, but his words were taken wrong. Those girls on the basketball team are now suing him, and for what? He didn’t mean anything by it, and even if he did are they that much of a loser that if someone calls them a name they can’t just shrug it off? Its shameful, and its ugly to get worked up over something that was never intended to insult, hurt or disrespect you, and its petty to get worked up over a silly name that someone calls you even if they did mean something by it. We’ve got to get past this spoiled, persnickety self entitled society where everyone is ready to sue or silence someone over a few jokes. These were meant to be jokes, and anyone thats ever turned on a TV knows that the jokes did represent at least a large portion of the outed gay community. Its just not something to get upset about, and I doubt too many gay people are worked up about it.

“Pressure on, Resigned to Mount Larry Craig”
August 30th, 2007 at 4:50 pmLarry Craig quote:
“I believe exonerating President Clinton with a vote for acquittal does create a threat to our nation. In short, I am convinced that the nation is at risk today–not because of the possibility of the president’s removal through the impeachment process, but because of the damage he has caused to the Executive office of the President, and the damage that continues to be done by his remaining in office.”
August 30th, 2007 at 4:53 pmI’m gay, and I’m not offended, for the simple fact that I know far too many gay men who fit the profile of that so-called “vicious” stereotype.
And speaking of stereotypes — scooter, what’s up with the references to goats, pedophiles and necrophiliacs?
“The lady doth protest too much, methinks.”
August 30th, 2007 at 4:57 pmThere really should be a sense of humor about this. I pity the senator. He has had to live a lie for his entire life. That is tragic. His senate career is over no doubt.

From what Faiz has told me, they only have someone monitoring the comments during business hours, and things get particularly out of control in the evenings and late at night — especially since some of our trolls have nothing else to do but post comments 18 hours a day. I think the staff at TP is committed to an exchange of ideas, so they’re hesitant to really shut trolls down as sites like Crooks and Liars manage to do. And, frankly, I don’t think they’re very good at administration; there’s always some excuse about the need for a high-tech solution that’s never instituted.

No, I just don’t buy his “I did not have sex with that man” story.
August 30th, 2007 at 6:01 pm10. Sen. Daniel Inouye. The 82-year-old Hawaii Democrat was accused in the 1990s by numerous women of sexual harassment. Democrats cast doubt on the allegations and the Senate Ethics Committee dropped its investigation.
9. Former Rep. Gus Savage. The Illinois Democrat was accused of fondling a Peace Corps volunteer in 1989 while on a trip to Africa. The House Ethics Committee decided against disciplinary action in 1990.
8. Rep. Barney Frank. The outspoken Massachusetts Democrat hired a male prostitute who ran a prostitution service from Frank’s residence in the 1980s. Only two Democrats in the House of Representatives voted to censure him in 1990.
7. Former Sen. Brock Adams. The late Washington Democrat was forced to stop campaigning after numerous accusations of drugging, assault and rape, the first surfacing in 1988.
6. Former Rep. Fred Richmond. This New York Democrat was arrested in 1978 for soliciting sex from a 16-year-old. He remained in Congress and won re-election—before eventually resigning in 1982 after pleading guilty to tax evasion and drug possession.
5. Former Rep. John Young. The late Texas Democrat increased the salary of a staffer after she gave in to his sexual advances. The congressman won re-election in 1976 but lost two years later.
4. Former Rep. Wayne Hays. The late Ohio Democrat hired an unqualified secretary reportedly for sexual acts. Although he resigned from Congress, the Democratic House leadership stalled in removing him from the Administration Committee in 1976.
3. Former Rep. Gerry Studds. He was censured for sexual relationship with underage male page in 1983. Massachusetts voters returned him to office for six more terms.
2. Former Rep. Mel Reynolds. The Illinois Democrat was convicted of 12 counts of sexual assault with a 16-year-old. President Bill Clinton pardoned him before leaving office.
1. Sen. Teddy Kennedy. The liberal Massachusetts senator testified in defense of nephew accused of rape, invoking his family history to win over the jury in 1991.

August 30th, 2007 at 6:12 pmThere are plenty of corrupt districts that vote idiots into office – does the name Marion Barry mean anything to you? Oh yea, New Orleans is another great example of that. I guess you get what you pay for.
August 30th, 2007 at 6:13 pmClinton’s approval rating at the height of impeachment was 65%. Bush’s today is 29%. This is not a matter of opinion or spin—this is a fact.
August 30th, 2007 at 6:14 pmI don’t like Marion Barry or Ray Nagin. But it was lack of federal spending on infrastructure that was responsible for the destruction of New Orleans and the Minneapolis bridge.
August 30th, 2007 at 6:17 pmGiven that Congress’s approval rating led by Pelosi and Reed is at an all time low (16% I believe at this point) I don’t really know what your point is other than you believe that the overwhelming majority of people in this country would approve of a President getting head in the Oval office of the People’s house by a girl not much older than his daughter who happens to work for him and he is a married man. Ok. To each is own I guess.

Once we get a democrat back in the oval office that wants to govern, government will work, again.
August 30th, 2007 at 6:35 pm15.7% of the population is currently uninsured. I have no problem in coming up with a system to help them – but to destroy the health care of 84% of the population to help 15.7% is typical of a large government mentality. Absolutely ridiculous.
August 30th, 2007 at 6:36 pmBig government never worked. It didn’t work when the DNC railroaded the country in the 70’s and 80’s and it didn’t work when the fake conservatives tried it in the 2000’s.
August 30th, 2007 at 6:37 pmIt is still a fact that 65% of Americans want what every other developed country in the world has: universal, single-payer government-run healthcare. The rest of the developed work is a lot more satisfied with their healthcare than Americans. And it is far, far cheaper. And there is noone without healthcare.
Medicare works very well and the administrative costs are 2% instead of the private sector”s 15-25%.
Consumer Reports said we would save $250 billion each and every year administratively-alone by switching to what every other developed country has. And it would save 18,000 lives every year.
August 30th, 2007 at 6:38 pmQuestion? Why destroy what is working for 84% of the population to help 16%? Why not just help the 16% – it will be a hell of a lot cheaper and will take a lot less government to do it. Just doesn’t make sense. The only reason to do such a thing is a typical socialist control of the population – and we all know what happens to economic systems when you play that game.
August 30th, 2007 at 6:40 pmCraig: I tend to spread my legs
August 30th, 2007 at 6:41 pmThe problems with Walter Reed occurred with privatization and the resulting cutback in staff.
With universal healthcare, veterans do not have to travel 200 miles to a VA hospital. They can go to any hospital they choose. That is what it is like in the rest of the developed world. I know. I lived in Britain for twelve years. Their system is far superior to ours and there are quite a few countries that are better than Britain.
August 30th, 2007 at 6:42 pmWith employment rates of 96%, an economy that keeps growing – let’s keep it in the private sector and try to move some of the uninsured into jobs where they get health care or can now afford it. I am for keeping jobs here and getting rid of illegals – I would rather pay more for stuff made by Americans than pay higher taxes.
August 30th, 2007 at 6:44 pmReagan increased the size of government. Clinton decreased it. GWBush increased it. Check an almanac.
August 30th, 2007 at 6:44 pmAgain, why destroy a system that is working for 84% of the popuplation? Why build such a sick large government to help 16% of the population – it makes absolutely no sense. You can’t not agree that helping 16% makes more sense than breaking a system that works for 84%.
August 30th, 2007 at 6:45 pmNotice how Republicans never do anything to prevent the increase in illegals. It is just rhetoric. Illegals mean low wages which is what Republicans adore.
August 30th, 2007 at 6:46 pmClinton decreased government only because a true conservate GOP Congress was in power. The GOP lost its way in the 90’s under Bush. BTW, most of the great so called financial gains in the 90’s were smoke and mirrors tied to the RTC liquidation effort and the dot bomb era.

Not much of a reader are you, eh?
You haven’t read up on the French papers trashing their healthcare system, eh?
while they say that yes, everyone in France is covered, the years long lines to get medical procedures done and the government interfering in ones private medical life.
This is what I dont’ get about Liberals.
They claim that we need more privacy and how dare the Bush administration get into people’s private life.
But these same Liberals have ZERO problem having the government get into their most private part of their life, their medical history.
explain.
August 30th, 2007 at 6:59 pm#178 Your theory does not fit the facts. Congress didn’t become more liberal going from Carter to Reagan. The increase in spending under Reagan was not on liberal spending. Democrats were in control under Clinton’s first budget which cut the deficit in half.
Congress didn’t become more liberal going from Clinton to GWBush. We have not had liberal spending the last six years. Your talking points just do not fit reality.
I swear, I have heard what you are saying a thousand times and it just does not add up.
August 30th, 2007 at 7:00 pmA little history lesson on the 90’s and Clinton’s so called surplus.
During the savings and loan debacle of the 80’s the government ended up with billions in assets of failed savings and loan banks. 100’s of billions of dollars.
During the 90’s the Resolution Trust Corporation sold off most of these assets and the dollars brought in inflated the “revenue” side of the US books making a surplus possible. Smoke and mirrors #1.
During the 90’s and the media blowout of the dot bomb business, mom and pop were sold a bill of goods to invest and invest and invest in these vaporware companies. The true villains, the banks of Wall Street, jumped around building wealth with no check and balance from the Clinton led government.
So with over 1 trillion$$ pumped into these companies, who quickly turned around and spent the money buidling their phony companies, the economy was artificially inflated – both with material goods (Cisco, Microsoft, etc.) and jobs (very tom dick and mary was a C level executive in the 90’s earning from this false wealth) – and of course they paid taxes – more fake money added to the US balance sheet – smoke and mirror #2.
Clinton basically did nothing – nothing to stop the banks, nothing to really help the economy. He just rode the wave of this bubble and you guys still buy that he somehow came close to balancing the budget. Not true.
August 30th, 2007 at 7:01 pmBTW, Regan’s spending was mostly military – basically he outspent the Russians and they collapsed under their own economic system. Given that we spend (and during Regan this was close) around 10% of our GNP on Military – and the Russians of that day (socialists as they were ) were spending upwards of 90% of their GNP on Military – we simply out spent them – and built better technology (private sector development tends to work that way).
August 30th, 2007 at 7:06 pmSo yes there was a build up (spending) during Regan but mostly on Military and defense technology.
BTW, we have had huge spending the last 6 years by so called conservatives – which means they are all bullshit artists. I give low ratings to the GOP for abandoning their conservative fiscal principles. Why do you think Bush’s rating is so low – and especially congress? It’s not just the liberals that are pissed.
August 30th, 2007 at 7:07 pmWere Reagan’s record deficits and GHWBush’s record deficits and GWBush’s record deficits smoke and mirrors, too? You are just spinning so you can say Clinton did nothing good and the Republicans did nothing wrong.
I have a graph of deficits/surpluses going from JFK to today and the difference is amazing.
First 200 years of USA, ending in 1981, equaled $0.9 trillion. After twelve years of Reagan and Bush, it equaled $4.1 trillion.
August 30th, 2007 at 7:08 pmBTW – check that graph against GNP/GDP and population. You will get interesting results. That is a spin graph. Yea, the deficit increased under just about every President in the past 150 years, deficit spending seems to be a way of life here. Look at the credit card debt and the sub prime mortgage market? It is ingrained in our culture.
And yet – we have one of the fast growing economies in history (in spite of a current housing/mortgage buble), we have employement rates of 96% – something just doesn’t add up does it.
August 30th, 2007 at 7:10 pmAs long as records have been kept (87 years) whenever we go from Republican to Democratic, the job growth rate improves, and whenever we go from Democratic to Republican, the job growth rate worsens.
And please don’t act like I am not capable of thinking of things I could easily think of forty years ago. It is an insult.
August 30th, 2007 at 7:27 pmAs for the framers, the constitution is fine and dandy, it makes it damn near impossible for the idiot masses to have a direct say in the goings on of the Nation.
Read Machiavelli’s The Discourses to see why!!!
