Rep. Meek blasts Bush’s $50 billion Iraq request.

Rep. Kendrick Meek (D-FL) just returned from a trip to Iraq yesterday and gave an interview criticizing the recent news that the Bush administration plans to request another $50 billion to fund the war in Iraq:

The American people are asking for our troops to come home. I think that should be the goal of the Congress — for our troops to come home. I think that there are some Members of Congress who feel that we should be there as long as we need to be there. I think that when you start looking at billions and billions of dollars that have been spent thus far on this war and then with the President just yesterday asking for an additional $50 billion dollars as though I was to ask you “let me borrow $50 dollars” — I think that’s the kind of attitude that has been allowed to take place here in Washington for far too long and we need to bring an end to it.

Congress, you have the power of the purse.

Grow a collective spine and start using that power.

There is no excuse. You can end this bloodbath now. The fact that you refuse to makes you accessories in this administration’s awful crimes.

50 Billion is not a lot a money if you say it real fast…

    50 billion.

    See:)

  3. Jackie says:

The US economy is in debt of Trillions of dollars and Bush doesnt tell anyone why he wants money, he doesn’t have to answer to anyone. When the Democrats speak up the American people shoot them down. Right now in order for the US economy to break even each man/woman/child in America would have to pay taxes of 29,000 dollars each. The amount goes up each day. As Americans see nothing given to the Katrina victims, flood victims, bridge victims, injured troops and no health care for children. American businesses are closing leaving millions of Americans without job. Now millions of Americans are losing their homes. But the Bush Administration still keep taking money and using it for anything but America. We watch GOP perverts, child molester and those buying prostitutes while using taxpayers money that they got as a bribe for following the crime White House orders.

  4. MapleStreet says:

How can he refuse to recognize the inherrent safety of Iraq – especially when his Republican cohort (Martinez) was **NOT** shot down while over the Anbar province ? Not to mention that Martinez is from the opposing party.

What a half-empty kind of guy he is !!!!!!

  5. Tracy says:

This guy is a joke! He thinks the U.S. Coast Guard is in Iraq. LOL!

  6. Dermot says:

Why can’t the opposition just spit it out instead of mumbling on and on saying less and less

Just say “Hell no we won’t give him any more money, withdraw the troops now”

Simple, few words, speaks volumes – instead of sentence after sentence backtracking and waffling until the end finally comes and no one is the wiser as to what the person’s position really is.

So all Meeks wants to do is ‘bring an end to the attitude’ in Washington. How about just saying let’s bring an end to the war. Jeez Louise.

Please explain how you get “Rep. Meek thinks the U.S. Coast Guard is in Iraq” from this. I’m curious.

  11. Democratsarethesurrendermonkeys says:

Kendrick Freek is precisely the epitome of the kind of foul Democrat that plagues their party of surrender monkeys today. After coming back from Iraq–where even fellow villains in his own party (Levin, O’Hanlon and Baird) have sworn to US military progress–this catastrophic congressman has the insolence to even defy the WH’s theoretical request for another $50 to ensure the US wins?! How dare Kendrick Freek usurp the role of Congress which, in times where the WH asks for bills already approved several times in earlier requests, is only to ADVISE and CONSENT. Freek mistakenly believes that Congress’ role is to usurp the CiC status from Bush and dictate how the war should be run and how soon to end it, if at all. This anarchic attitude by Freek is exactly the lowest type of congressional mischief around–if you don’t count California congressman Filner’s assault on an airport employee.

Yeah. God forbid we actually help the elderly. After all, they’re no longer productive members of society, right?

We are spending trillions of dollars in Iraq, and for what? To go deeper and deeper into a quagmire. To get more and more of our servicemembers killed for Bush’s lie.

Now, address the topic of this thread or go away.

  18. Dermot says:

So if the Dems are successful in getting us to pull out the troops prematurely and mayhem ensues in Iraq with hundreds of thousands dying, what are your guys going to use to wash the blood off your hands?

Turn the clock back to 2003 and ask yourself that question -
So if we invade Iraq and hundreds of thousands die and mayhem ensues what are your guys going to use to wash the blood of your hands?

Whoops that is what happened. So before you go asking about the unknown ask yourself about the known

Cynicon – What are your guys going to do to wash the blood off of their hands????????

What are you using to wash the blood off your hands now? You act like no one has died for this absurd war folly of Bush’s. Thousands of innocent Iraqis have already been killed because of our elective war. Why do you not care about them? Why speculate over what might happen in the future when the damage has already been done?

Or mabe we could talk about Hillary getting campaign donations from a convicted felon who funneled money through other families to get around donation limits.

True progressives would be about cleaning up the system — not just hammering one side!

2 states west of that. I don’t quite get the reference. Of course, I was being sarcastic about how safe Iraq is as Florida’s repub was just in Iraq and was fired upon. But obviously, the fact that his plane didn’t actually get shot down proves that all is well ;-)

Try looking at the US deficit and you’ll see that to balance the budget each American man/woman/child would have to pay in taxes 29,000 dollars. Now as I read the comments you do the math and the about is going up each day. We allowed this to happen and we should all say Thank You Mr. Bush for putting our country is the largest debt in the history. So when some of you on this blog lose your job or your home you can be proud of the support you gave the criminals that robbed you. Just keep handing out that US Treasury money to Bush/Cheney went ever they want it as they don’t have to tell you what it’s for nor will they tell you the truth.

    >TP, I’d like to propose a couple of new topics

NEW? these two things are apparently the only talking points the trolls have left, they’ve been bringing them up incessantly when they are unable to defend the allegations that get posted here.

ooooh,,, a civil fine and taking money from someone who was a criminal although they wernt aware he was a criminal at the time that they took it.. (thank god repubs do background checks on all thier donors_keeps them honest and unindicted)

I’m picturing a right wing analouge of TP where one shady hilary donor and a paltry (by big busines standards) fine on ACT is all they post about, over over and over again…. over half of the stuff TP posts is new material, new dirt on the rethugs….and yet these two isolated events are rehashed over and over again in a weak and limp wristed response.

lets not talk about them and say we did….what the next thing up on the menu we need to talk about Cynipeed??

    >True progressives would be about cleaning up the system
    >— not just hammering one side!

right.. please point me to a right wing site that doesnt hammer one side on a consistent basis… sure im sure some of your sites are griping about craig, who basically attempted to engage in public, but not paid for, sex, but im sure they are all keeping silent about vitter, who basically admitted to a crime, paying for sex.. simply because no prosecutor decided to charge vitter with a crime in no way makes his admission morally irrelevant. but calling on him to resign would put the seat in dem hands, so you’re not going to see it happen…

    > Or mabe we could talk about Hillary getting campaign donations from a >convicted felon

only if you care to give us your insight about all the people abrahoff gave donations to and how many of them have already gone to jail or at least under investigation

  50. VietnamVet says:

I have posted this elsewhere, but it seems just as applicable here:

Yes, and what has been wasted could have fixed social security for years to come, if not the rest of this century, and half a dozen more of important programs that are unfunded or short funded, because of Mr. Bush’s war! But, what Mr. Bush wants to do is continue funding this war of choice on credit! Yes, increase the national debit by so many more billions of dollars. That’s just what the Republicans have been doing every since Reagan started that financial fiasco called “trickle down.” Look at the state of our national debt and who has caused the bulk of it here:

    http://www.lafn.org/politics/gvdc/Natl_Debt_Chart.html

If you look at this site, you can see that is/has been the Republicans, starting with Reagan, that are responsible for the vast increase in our debt, Bush 1, and now this warmonger of president continued on the same course. If you do not believe this National Debt is affecting our financial well being, consider:

    1. It is, in part, responsible for the loss of value of the US dollar against other world currencies, especially the European Euro; 45+% in only the last five years.

    2. Other nations fleeing from the US dollar as a hedge currency hasten the decline in value.

    3. Potential increase in the price of oil when oil producing countries start pricing oil in Euros, rather than dollars. (A couple have already done so, and others are considering doing so.)

    4. Some holders of our national debt are NOT our friends, China for example, and if they start calling in the debt, it could cause financial ruin for this nation.

    5. Last, but certainly not least, Bush is mortgaging the future of our greandchildren and maybe even their grandchildren’s, due to this idiotic war!

“We owe Japan $714.9 billion; China, $191.1 billion; the United
    Kingdom, $152.5 billion; the Caribbean Banking Center, $76.2 billion;
Korea, $69.3 billion; OPEC nations, and we wonder by gasoline is so
high, OPEC nations, we have borrowed as a Nation $66.6 billion from
them. The list goes on and on. In fact, we have borrowed, this
administration has borrowed more money from foreign governments and
foreign banks in less than 5 years than the previous 42 Presidents
    combined…”

Much like others here, I want to see an end to this disaster asap, but am stuck with the historical mendacious words and actions from some congressional GOP members who are calling for withdrawl from Iraq. Much like with the Military Commission Act a.k.a. torture bill, we are beginning to see “moderate” GOP senators and congressmen calling for withdrawl, which is all well and good, but why? What, other than playing a little ‘08 election C.Y.A. (Hello Norm Coleman!) is their true motive? My sneaking suspicion is if there is an agreement to troop reduction this fall, it will only serve to increase our chances for attack against Iran. The lower number of forces on the ground in Iraq/Green Zone, USA, the less retaliatory casualties we’ll have after our first salvo with Iran. By no means am I advocating for any further reason to keep our troops where they didn’t belong in the first place, but it appears that with the overabundance of naval vessels floating in the Gulf, Bushco is going to look to minimize casualties and can even appear to be finally serving the will of the people by doing this.

This is all one great big chess game to all those calling the shots here. It would be of zero surprise to me if this scenario ended up being the reality we face this fall and into ‘08.
