Today is Karl Rove’s last day on the job at the White House.
Bush will visit Pentagon commanders today who are reportedly divided over what to do about Iraq. He “is expected to hear deep concerns about the long-term impact on U.S. forces of maintaining a heavy troop presence in Iraq in 2008 and beyond.”
One of the most pressing issues for Alberto Gonzales’ replacement, according to dozens of current and former federal prosecutors, “is a budget squeeze at U.S. attorneys’ offices that has led to declines in crime prosecutions and delays in major investigations.”
New e-mails released by Sen. Edward Kennedy (D-MA) confirm that the Bush administration “viewed former surgeon general Richard H. Carmona as a public relations tool, pushing him to make political appearances and promote the Bush administration’s agenda while he was in office.”
An American-owned company operating from Kuwait, Lee Dynamics International, “paid hundreds of thousands of dollars in bribes to American contracting officers in efforts to win more than $11 million in contracts.”
The NAACP has “filed a civil rights lawsuit challenging a purge of Louisiana voters believed to have registered in other states following Hurricane Katrina.” The organization has charged that the purge began without the pre-authorization of the Justice Department, which is required for the state under the 1965 Voting Rights Act.
An independent commission has found that “the rampant sectarianism that has existed since the formation of the [Iraqi] police force requires that its current units ‘be scrapped’ and reshaped into a smaller, more elite organization.” One official said the recommendation is that “we should start over.”
And finally: Rep. David Dreier (R-CA) said “he meant no offense when he hoisted himself onto the lectern of Colombia’s lower house to address his Andean colleagues, some of whom were offended or simply amused by the faux pas.” “I meant absolutely no offense,” said Dreier. “I simply wanted to demonstrate my warm feeling and affection.”
What did we miss? Let us know in the comments section.
Bye Bye Turdblossom!
Have you picked out your orange jumpsuit, yet?

Let me guess, our guys will have to stay in Iraq to ‘train’ this whole new police force. Another year or six months and we’ll ‘assess’ how this new force is doing…repeat process until Bush leaves office.

August 31st, 2007 at 9:23 am“One official said the recommendation is that “we should start over.â€
Sure we should start over training Iraqi police forces, that way we can stay in Iraq another 50 years. It has taken us over 5 years to train the few Iraqi police that they have right now, we should be able to train enough to ensure the safety of Iraq in, say, 50 years. In the meantime we will have sucked Iraq dry of their oil reserves so we will be ready to leave anyway.
What did Iraq do about police before we came there? Did they operate without a police force? Are they incapable of forming and training their own police?
End this occupation NOW and turn Iraq back to the people who own the country. We certainly don’t own it and we have no right to any of their natural assets.

Many years ago a Dr. Parkinson developed a “law” that portrayed the fact that in any bureaucracy work expands to fill the time available for its completion. The unfortunate corollary to his law is that when the time (read money) contracts the excess work (read administrators) does not contract accordingly hence the real work goes undone. It is the nature of politicians and bureaucrats to cry wolf when their wallets are threatened rather than tighten their administrative belts and do the job they were elected or hired to do.
I suggest we enact “Clyde’s Law” that proclaims that a reduction in force in any bureaucracy due to a reduction in funding be TOP DOWN. Meaning that the first to go is the top dog and the next in line is promoted (without a raise in pay) and fired in turn until the work force equals the money available for the salaries.

August 31st, 2007 at 10:06 amSo Carmona was a PR tool, there for the purpose of advancing Bush’s agenda? I think the same thing can be said for everybody connected with Bush. Promoting the Bush agenda and acting as a Bush spin machine is far more important than overseeing the health of Americans, running the Justice Department, advancing diplomacy, keeping the country secure, or any of the other things people in these positions are supposed to be doing.
August 31st, 2007 at 10:07 amHow about some proof that this is the case? How about just applying a little thought to the situation instead of gobbling repuke propaganda as anything close to truth?
Or you could try reading the article. Louisiana said Either keep voting where you are living and be removed from our system. OR Remove yourself from their system and vote here. If they don’t go and do an action (Remove themselves from their current place) then they stay in the areas they are residing (Your listed “Rich White Areas”). They are purging people who aren’t living in New Orleans from the New Orleans voting system, so that the people there have true representation.

Congress un-Constitutionally infringed on the Commander-in-Chief’s powers with the Boland Amendment though ; )

I think it’s possible to excuse oneself from a group of third-graders with an explanation of some “presidential business” without frightening them. And it would have been appropriate for Bush to have done this as soon as he received the news from Card that we were “under attack”. Remember, this group of children had not yet heard about the attacks, nor had they seen any horrifying images of exploding airplanes, so it really wasn’t necessary for Bush to hang around solely to make them feel secure.

The Justice Department AND Health & Human Services were indeed working on the AIDS issue before 1987. For instance, one of the findings of the commission on pornography highlighted that “pornography and the anonymous sexual promiscuity it enourages contributes directly to the spread of sexually transmitted diseases, including AIDS.” (that was 1985). DoJ worked with HHS to ensure that AIDS patients would not be discriminated and protected under civil rights laws (although some of that legislation did not get passed until the Civil Rights Restoration Act of 1987). Uhhm it establishes a pattern of republicans engaging in questionable voting supression related actions…oh nevermind…I guess people who see patterns get pegged as “conspiracy theorists”
I’ll admit I’m speculating, but given the how the election “tweaking” actions I mentioned have played out in the past, I think its entirely fair to be suspicious that perphaps displaced voters from minority districts are receiving more scrutiny than displaced voters from more white areas.
In any case, after multitudes of nationwide investigation, many of them very slanted toward being motivated to find voter fraud, there have been no cases of organized, high or even mid level voter fraud brought to light. A few low level volunteers in community groups have been charged, but thats it… several attorney gernerals (republicans), lost thier jobs because they didnt pursue voter fraud cases because they didnt feel there was sufficient evidence to proceed. So while “we’re preventing the scrouge of voter fraud” is a common right wing refrain, in reality, the alleged attempts to attack the alleged voter fraud have more often simply resulted in supression of minority (i.e. democratic) votes.
August 31st, 2007 at 11:23 amFrom everything that we can ascertain from the historical record, Reagan’s religious background, feelings, or beliefs had nothing to do with his political response to the AIDS epidemic. His appalling policies led to enormous setbacks for HIV/AIDS science and research, discrimination against people with AIDS, and the lack of any comprehensive outreach for prevention or education work, all adding to the already staggering amount of mounting deaths. His policies on AIDS were a product of indifference, disdain, self-imposed ignorance, and political capitulation to a staunchly reactionary and religious Republican constituency that was to reshape not only the party, but also the state of U.S. politics.
Although AIDS was first reported in the medical and popular press in 1981, it was only in October 1987 that President Reagan publicly spoke about the epidemic. By the end of that year 59,572 AIDS cases had been reported and 27,909 of those women and men had died. How could this happen? How could Reagan not say anything? Do anything?

August 31st, 2007 at 11:39 amI guess people who see patterns get pegged as “conspiracy theoristsâ€
If you call yourself that then OK.
Uhhm it establishes a pattern of republicans engaging in questionable voting supression related actions
Personally I look at things on a case by case basis and don’t automatically say “Hey a Republican did this, so this guy is a Republican so he is wrong too” (Just as I don’t do with Democrats, I don’t use the Clinton did it too defense)
I think its entirely fair to be suspicious that perphaps displaced voters from minority districts are receiving more scrutiny than displaced voters from more white areas.
August 31st, 2007 at 11:47 amI fully agree, it is fair to look into it and see what is happening. I’m not saying that minority voters aren’t sometimes held to a tighter scrutiny (And not defending that practice either). But you can’t say “Don’t follow the law with him, because someone else isn’t following the law with others”
>I am talking about the Secretary of state for Louisiana,
Ah ok. At least your not trying to defend the florida thing because its pretty indefensible.
Apparely in the current LA situation, there is some hoop they had to jump through before they started purging, that they didnt…given that the hoop is held by a republican administration, its probably an irrelevant hoop..but rules is rules I suppose.. and maybe there might be someone at the Justice Department who might notice (and care) if these disqualification attempts are being targeted toward minorities only, or if the criteria for disqualification is somehow slanted more toward matches that would wrongly exclude minorities. With the way this country is today, who knows? I do admit at this point its a mere educated guess… If homophobic senators can go trolling for blowjobs and mansex in public restrooms, I suppose anything is possible.

August 31st, 2007 at 12:19 pmThere should be some penalty (idiot tax) on those morons, but losing the house is a pretty stiff penalty.
I’d also be wanting to see the predatory lenders who initially sold those loans pay some costs as well. Maybe all the closing costs plus a point or two would be a good lesson.

Comment by Kay — August 31, 2007 @ 11:24 am
Reagan’s world was a cinematic treatment of a Leave It To Beaver fantasy. This was a guy who believed that non-whites had it pretty good in this country and believed that if anyone wanted to get a job, all they had to do was look in the want ads. He also believed that corporations weren’t heartless greedheads and that they would obediently “trickle down” extra profit that came their way due to tax cuts.
AIDS didn’t fit into this world of his. There were no equivalent paradigms in his brain he could pull out to enable relating to it in any way. Therefore, it didn’t exist.
August 31st, 2007 at 12:59 pmThis is a guy who one reelection with 80% of the votes.
Comment by Tundra — August 31, 2007 @ 11:09 am
I’m not sure why this particular embellishment is relevant. The re-election (the 80% one) mentioned on his campaign website was for his state senate seat in 2003. He is currently in his first term as Secretary of State, having been elected in 2006.
In any case, I find his behavior to be typical of Republicans in our time. In his zeal to disenfranchise likely Democratic voters, he is in violation of long-standing Federal legislation. He should be aware of this legislation, as it proscribes many of his activities as Secretary of State.
I share his – and your – desire to purge people who will no longer reside in New Orleans. He simply must follow the law to do so. However, since those affected were uprooted by the storm, are very numerous, and have a desire to return home, I believe a less strident adherance to the letter of the law is appropriate.
August 31st, 2007 at 1:53 pmRove has only changed his location, do not think for one minute he won’t still be a driving force with Cheney and Bush. Out of the WH but still on the payroll doing the dirty dance. Rumsfeldt just moved his office to another building. Cockroaches just move to another area when sprayed with bug spray.

the average mortality rate of vehicular collisions is right around 45,000 per year (averaged from 1980 – 2004).
Thanks, UhClem. Last time I checked, 45,000 is more than 27,909..
August 31st, 2007 at 4:54 pmThe Center for Disease Control (part of the Executive branch) was actiively involved in HIV/AIDS as early as 1982 and issued warnings regarding sexual contact or infected blood transmitting the virus. The government began formal tracking of all AIDS cases in 1983 and later that year, Dr. Robert Gallo of the (U.S. government’s) National Institutes of Health, and Dr. Luc Montagnier of France’s Pasteur Institute independently identify Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) that causes AIDS.
