Buyer beware: Bush admin neglecting consumer safety.

With recent recalls of toys, jewelry, and other products made in China, the Consumer Product Safety Commission has come under intense public scrutiny lately. The New York Times notes that the agency “has hardly been a priority of the Bush administration“:

Under the Bush administration, which promised to ease what it viewed as costly rules that placed unnecessary burdens on businesses, industry-friendly officials have been installed at federal agencies that oversee the nation’s workplaces, food suppliers, environment and consumer goods. [...]

The commission’s shrinking budget is just $62 million this year, even though the agency regulates an industry that sells $1.4 trillion annually. The Food and Drug Administration, which has a $2 billion budget, spends nearly twice as much monitoring the safety of animal feed and drugs than the Consumer Product Safety Commission spends to ensure the safety of products as diverse as toy, tools and televisions used every day by millions of Americans.

Just because it was not the top priority, doesn't mean it was neglected. In fact, Bush has rised the bar in almost all of the responsibilities of the President, so consumer safety has most likely increased since he took office.

    TP,

In addition, GW BOTCH is changing the rules which would now allow uninspected (for US safety standards) long-haul trucks into this country for the first time.

This corporate suckup has never met a safety measure that means shit to him or his puppet masters!!!

  3. ProgressiveshavenothingwithoutBushHatred Says:

More alarmism misdirected at the Bush admin. by half-educated ideologues at this Toilet Paper hate-site! Here's the progressives' new tactic of further stupidity in discrediting the Bush admin.: because of one, recent recall of toys made in China, progressives are renewing their frenetic psychosis and predictably making a big deal of it to disparage Bush for everything under the sun. The real ulterior motive of progs is they don't care about real consumer safety in demeaning Bush for allegedly underfunding the Consumer Product Safety Commission. Progtards are really only obsessed with protectionism and keeping manufacturing jobs in the US. Progtards love these recalls as they can demonize China and help Democrat-leaning unions by calling to keep manufacturing in the US. The downside to boycotting China is that consumer prices in the US will rise; since progressives always moan about how the middle class has no rising wages due to Bush's tax cuts, boycotting China is the least they should want.

IN fact, we have been successful in stopping 5 new Wal-Mart stores from being built in our community in the past 3 years. Guess your hypothesis would be that ALL the collateral damage will be Repugs.

BYW, I bet if you went to almost any Wal-Mart/Sam's parking lot, the Bush/Cheney'04 bumper stickers on the pickups would be about 75% of the total vehicles in the lots.

walMart has taken a big hit from the Chinese lead-filled toys that Bushco refused to inspect. Bush is not only murdering his base, he is destroying the economy as he goes. Your ignorance of the facts is hastening this destruction, which is why your party won't see unchecked power like this ever again. the GOP is done, and Bush killed it. We're just providing the funeral. If you want to make a list of Bush's accomplishments that are favorable to america instead of Saudi arabia or china, that's the only one.

Microsoft is doing the same thing, and will fall and die as well. WalMart is failing in many communities, and is being rejected in many more. Their illegal slavery techniques and fear-mongering, as well as their use of welfare as part of their profit scheme is now well-known, and they will be cut down to siza as soon as we rid the country of the thieves and vermin of the GOP.

Of course it's Bush's fault, there is nobody else to blame in that particular situation. those were the days.

    Comment by ronjazz — September 1, 2007 @ 5:59 pm

When I was 5, my father tried putting me and my brother and sister to work. He told us we had to work from sunrise to sunset, 7 days a week, in the upstate NY summer, for free. We could only stop to eat lunch and supper. He told me I had to pay back every cent he spent raising me by working for him, that he could charge as much interest as he wanted, pay me as little as he wanted, and if I never paid the debt off, I had to work for him my whole life and keep giving him all the money. He said it was state law.

The first morning he put us to work, he got upset when he realized such small children simply couldn't work that hard. He started screaming at us at the top of his lungs and whipping us w/ his belt.

This is a true story. He was a registered Repub his whole life. Once I got bigger, I was always alot nicer to him than he ever was to me. I never went back and killed him, but I wanted to, badly.

most republicans are thousands of years behind on the evolutionary scale, and heve not become full humans yet, scooter, here, is a prime example. I call them The Unevolved. They are commonly known as knuckle-draggers, neandertals, barbarians and savages. If liberals weren't so damned eveolved, we'd do the right thing and thin the herd, but we're just too human. that's why repukes find it easy to justify slaughtering Iraqi children and destroying the American military, because they have no respect for human life. even their "right to life" crusade is very simply about controling their women. they don't care about babies or fetuses, just their own retarded self-esteem.

The ideas you espouse in lock-step with Bushco are really an extension of yourself, your belief system and values...yet you get extremely worked up by that, rather than engaging in a respectful discussion, listening as well as speaking, you revert to Libtard name calling and out right dismissal of other's opinions with little or no facts to back up your screed.

Let's go back to the Scooter we all loved who admitted his mistakes, shall we?

And what do you expect from China, a country unbridled by any need to protect the consumer? Our Global Economy "race to the bottom" has led us right to the point where we will again realize that Upton Sinclair's "Jungle" must be prevented through government action--if not inspectors to confirm that the domestic food supply is regulated, then inspectyors to ensure that foodstuffs from China are safe.
