In an analysis of Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice’s efforts to “reshape her legacy,” New York Times reporter Helene Cooper notes today that Rice “is trying hard to rewrite her legacy to include something more than Iraq.” As for Iraq, Rice’s “colleagues and friends say that she has accepted that Iraq is a stain that she probably cannot remove before she leaves office.”
Rice’s legacy is a stain on humanity.
September 1st, 2007 at 11:43 amAnd you’d think slaughtering Nigerians when she was working for Exxon would be a big enough stain. Maybe she used some Zout on that one…
September 1st, 2007 at 11:47 amUncle Tom is Condi’s legacy. She’s totally and completely played into it.
September 1st, 2007 at 11:50 amRice “is trying hard to rewrite her legacy to include something more than Iraq.â€
Well, Condi, there’s always shoe-shopping, promoting golf, being NFL Commish and sucking off GDumbya’s miniscule little dick.
Good luck with all that.
(please quit your day job)
September 1st, 2007 at 11:50 amGo shopping, Condi. That should make you feel better.
September 1st, 2007 at 11:51 amNice try.
More like a tattoo, even if removed, there’s always a scar.
September 1st, 2007 at 11:51 amA stain? Thousands of dead, wounded, mutilated people, ethnic cleansing on her watch, millions of refugees, world hatred toward us increased.
A “stain?”
My God these people are disconnected from reality. The best thing she could do for her name would be to resign.
September 1st, 2007 at 11:53 amWhat about the Kool-Aid stains? She nearly drowned in the stuff.
September 1st, 2007 at 11:54 amPlease Condi, Iraq is more than enough.
September 1st, 2007 at 11:58 amParaphrasing Shakespeare,
Condi: “Out, damned spot!”
September 1st, 2007 at 12:01 pmCondi was initially hired away from academic life by Poppy Bush to tutor his idiot son and help prepare him for a political career. The fact that Condi barely was able to toilet train the Chimp and teach him to use a knife and fork is a strong indicator of how successful she’s been. Remember how disgusting Bush was at the meeting with Blair and Merkel when he loudly smacked his food in Tony’s face and then tried to give Angela Merkel a back rub? And for “mushroom cloud” Condi, “what August 6th PDB?” Condi, shoe-shopping-during-Katrina Condi it’s been all downhill from then.
September 1st, 2007 at 12:08 pmThousands of dead, maimed, millions of displaced, one of the biggest humanitarian crisis in the world. All of this under her and her boss’ watch, due to an invasion that needed not be but they pushed for anyway.
And she calls one of the worst foreign policy and military blunder in American history a “stain”. Fits nicely with Bush’s “just a comma” comment.
Goes to show what a callous, uncaring, detached lot the people serving in this administration (and their supporters) are.
September 1st, 2007 at 12:12 pmAt least she kept him from crapping his pants in public.

September 1st, 2007 at 12:23 pmCondi > it is NOT a stain > you are an accomplice in war crimes!
September 1st, 2007 at 12:25 pmBah. It was Clinton who left a stain on both a young woman he took advantage of and on the entire nation.
September 1st, 2007 at 12:25 pmTo be fair, Iraq started before she was Sec. State.
9/11 is a far bigger stain on her legacy. “Historical in nature…. no one could have predicted…”
Katrina, too, shopping for shoes while the Canadian gov’t was trying to get in touch with her to coordinate rescue and emergency equipment.

September 1st, 2007 at 12:31 pmWhat’s with these people who are “trying hard to rewrite their legacy”. Your legacy is your legacy and you can’t re-write it. You can contribute to it, but you can’t rewrite it. If Condi wants to leave office with anything to show for her years as Bush’s work wife, then she needs to get to work to convince Bush that attacking Iran IS A VERY BAD IDEA. That would be her one accomplishment when she leaves office, if she were able to pull it off.

September 1st, 2007 at 12:44 pmSorry condi, but a ’stain’ is an inadequeate the word to describe your crimes…..you needed to use, oh say…WAR CRIMINAL comes to mind, afer all YOU personally ignored the intell before 9-11, and failed to do YOUR job then, .. long before you were a co-conspiator in the lies to the illegal war of agression to attack iraq and destroy it, complete with over 1,000,000 murdered Iraqis and 4,000,000 refugees tanks to YOU and your hus.. er your boss the idiot in chief….

Wow, it took 17 whole posts for an idiot troll to bring up Clinton. Trolls, you are slipping. I would have expected the Clinton post within the first 10 posts.
Somehow to Rethugs Clinton getting a blow job from a willing female is worse than Bush invading and occupying a country that was no threat to us, causing millions of people to be displaced from their country, another million dead and almost 4,000 of our citizens dead.
That’s how out of tough with reality Rethugs are.
September 1st, 2007 at 12:44 pmYes, being an abettor of the “Supreme International Crime” tends to leave a bit of a mark on one’s record.
September 1st, 2007 at 12:44 pmIf Condi really wanted to do something to go down in history as anything other than a total failure, she would quit her job and tell the world about all the crimes, lies and deceptions that the Bush Crime Family have committed. If she did that, she would go down in history as a heroine.
September 1st, 2007 at 12:45 pmRice was the NSA during 9-11, correct? Now that’s a pretty big stain. I mean, “who could have ever imagined airplanes being used as missiles” and all?

Unfortunately, “rewrite” seems to be commonplace in this administration. We’ll rewrite the GAO report, rewrite our reasons for going into Iraq, rewrite the constitution for that matter. If we put a pretty face on it for the American public, it’ll all be okay. And if you can’t rewrite it, just delete it.

More’s the point, the useless bint was National Security Adviser on August 6, when she read the PDB outloud to her halfwit pupil, and three weeks later when the “panicked” CIA analyst to his pretend-ranch to tell him again, and he said “Okay, you’ve covered your ass”, and went to pull weeds.
September 1st, 2007 at 12:53 pmI’m with Zooey. Can anyone point to any policy accomplishments, any diplomatic accomplishments? What does she doe besides shop?
September 1st, 2007 at 12:54 pmPoor Stanford.
September 1st, 2007 at 12:55 pmHer legacy will preclude thousands of otherwise qualified students from even considering attending that besmirched institute of higher learning.
Condi is the most powerful woman in government. That is worth 1000+ examples. Since she doesn’t care to become U.S President (unfortunate), the second offering should be Stanford’s president, where she is an academic at heart.
Comment by CT_V1 — September 1, 2007 @ 12:50 pm
Gonzales was the most powerful Latino in government. Does that make him a great leader? What if Hillary becomes president? Will you call her a great leader? Will that intrinsically be worth 1000+ examples as well?
September 1st, 2007 at 12:56 pmSo how about those three examples of Condi’s leadership?

No, she holds a powerful seat, that doesn’t mean she’s powerful. And most would argue Pelosi is the most powerful woman in American government, given her position in the line of succession and her position in the House. It appears Condi is simply a figurehead, a playmate for the president, a bobblehead yes-woman for Cheney’s policies.

#17 – Clinton actually left the coutry in better shape than he found it. When Clinton came into Office, there was a huge national debt due to unbridaled tax cuts to the wealthy (Supply Side Economics). When he left, there was a surplus. So, by your reasoning, bush is a great President because he has saddled the Nation with debt? As for Monica, she was a legal aged women, not a litttle boy. Clinton didn’t sexually harass boys and he didn’t TROLL restrooms for anonymous same sex liasons. BTW What are you TROLLING for?
September 1st, 2007 at 1:06 pmCondi’s next job will be training jewelry store clerks in manners. It’s the only thing she’s shown a proclivity for that’s in any way useful. Any idiot can shop.

September 1st, 2007 at 1:14 pmwell, to take advantage of the momentary silence of our stunned trolls, let me gleefully announce that Larry Craig’s new wide stance is as ex-Senator. Hounded out of his party by—his party! It reminds of Cheney shooting his good buddy. republicans can’t govern, they can’t even hold onto their seats (they’re too busy holding somebody else’s seat). Now, let’s talk about Clinton, because that’s it for you rightard wingnuts. that’s all you have, a consensual blowjob by a paid repuke operative, and a repuke pervert prosecutor spending $70 million to spew his garbage all over the news. ok, here are a few I could find.
1. She spends many of her weekends at Camp David with Bush, watching baseball and football and doing jigsaws with the first family.
2. Rice is an accomplished pianist who plays with an ensemble as often as every other week.
3. Rice took up golf in August 2005. “I’m enjoying it immensely. I find it’s one of the things that really gets me out, gets my mind clear, and I really enjoy it.”
4. Rice’s favorite movie is Casablanca. “I watch whenever it comes on. . . . ”
No wonder she doesn’t have time for her State Department duties!
September 1st, 2007 at 1:23 pmVery, very weak today, CT_VD. Defending the failure of the woman responsible for 9/11. Very weak, very unpatriotic. And yet, you come with no facts, no evidence to support your tired, cliched talking points. Haven’t you noticed how many of your favorite traitors have abandoned you? Can’t you smell the total defeat of the repuclicRAT party, even over the crap in your drawers? Don’t you see that you are alone here, outnumbered by 10 to 1, as you are all over America? Don’t you see that you have been lied to, used, battered and abused? or is that OK with you, because you’re a sick pervert like your leaders?
Anyway, you still haven’t answered the question, which is completely on point. Let’s hear it.

I wouldn’t call letting 9/11 happen an acheivement, or lying to the country about aluminium tubes, or lying about the connection between Saddam and al Qaeda, or making up crap about “we don’t want the smoking gun to be a mushroom cloud” to scare ignorant people into supporting her ignorant pupil’s oedipal vanity war.

September 1st, 2007 at 1:31 pm#34, Thousands of American dead, Tens of thousands horribly injured, nearly a million Iraqis killed in a nation that did NOTHING to harm us, no WMD, no nuclear program, no ties to al-Qaeda… I’d say she pretty much defined her own legacy, pal.
September 1st, 2007 at 1:32 pmCondi has achieved based upon her merits. Hillary has ascended based upon her feeling of entitlement. Previously being “First Lady†doesn’t prepare somebody for the presidency, and U.S. senators don’t have a big track-record of being elected president. It just doesn’t provide day-to-day managerial experience that Governors and other officials have. While Condi has never been a governor, a cabinet secretary, I feel, is still more worth than a senator because it’s high-level executive-branch experience. While Condi doesn’t plan to run, but she’d still be of more worth than Clinton.
Comment by CT_V1 — September 1, 2007 @ 1:13 pm
You’re still not answering Zooey’s question. Just BEING in a position does not prove one’s worth. What specific foreign-policy successes can you name that Condi is responsible for? Has she brokered any successful treaties? Made us any new allies? C’mon, you must have one example you can give us.

That’s what you consider an example of the good things she has done for our government and our country. Pathetic. Not to mention the fact that I will disagree with you. I believe that Nancy Pelosi is the most powerful woman in government at this time. Condi has been marginalized by Bush and Company and really has nothing to contribute. Nancy Pelosi has enough power in her hands to bring down the Bush Crime Family. Only if she chooses to use it. Thus far she hasn’t.

September 1st, 2007 at 2:08 pmcazzie — you left out one thing. The Bush Administration lost an American city. New Orleans, one of the oldest cities in the country is effectively gone. When Bush visited New Orleans the other day he told them they didn’t see the progress because they live there all the time. But he sees the progress because he is there so rarely. OMG

September 1st, 2007 at 3:05 pmCondi Rice is concerned with the effect of the Iraq War on her reputation? She has nothing to worry about! When future generations look back on the Bush Administration, the Iraq fiasco will be just a footnote compared to the world-shaking disaster of the Iran War in 2008. I mean, who remembers the bombing of Guernica as compared with the Battle of Britain?
September 1st, 2007 at 3:06 pmCondi is a complete and utter failure. Nothing she has attempted as part of this administration has been successful or turned out well. She made a fool of herself lying to Congress, shopping during Katrina, being caught lying about being fluent in Russian (my personal favorite), and just generally being all talk, no substance. She writes Op-Eds that are simply cast aside due to being obvious bullshit propaganda, world leaders don’t take her the least bit seriously. Not to mention that frightening helmet she calls ‘hair’. Useless. Don’t worry though, her water-carrying has certainly earned her a lifetime of wingnut welfare.

September 1st, 2007 at 3:27 pmI agree on the China and Russia comments by w. kierman and cazzie. The fight over resources will be difficult and long: China’s voracious appetite for hydrocarbons will increase in a quantity greater than the world has ever seen up to this time and they have a standing army second to none, in pure manpower. Russia has a lot of weaponry, maybe old, but much of it is still effective and both countries have no qualms about unleashing their respective might if they feel so compelled.
And our military has been squandered for no reason and to rebuild it will take years and Billions of dollars. The loss of our best and brightest senior officers and the large number of recent Acadamy grads, is mind-boggling. The fact we have to pay $40,000 signing bonuses just to get warm bodies is very telling.

Ya got NOTHIN’. Absolutely NOTHIN’.
In case no one mentioned it, here’s one more abysmal and deadly failure on her watch: She steadfastly refused to criticize Israel, or broker peace, between them and Hezbollah, for weeks on end. She said, and I paraphrase, “Sometimes there needs to be war. Sometimes these things just need to play out”, thinking, WRONGLY, of course, that Israel would smack the s**t out of them and ‘peace’ would follow.

September 1st, 2007 at 5:43 pmIf Condi wants to improve her image, she should take a few lessons from Monica Lewinski, who of course suffered from similar image problems (e.g., they both gave false and misleading testimony under oath while the President of the United States suborned perjury and obstructed justice). A book to tell her own side of the story, a makeover, new shoes, an interview by Barbara Walters, etc. might do her a world of good, or at least make her feel better about herself.

Not entirely true. Some of us do it simply for fun. Let me explain. Henri Bergson had an interesting theory about the comic, e.g. what it is that makes us laugh. To him, comedy was created when a person displayed characteristics that were in some way “machine-like.” I won’t go into it any further here, but it is the robotic, knee-jerk repetition of phrases like “cut and run,” “family values,” “homosexual agenda,” “stay the course,” and so many other poo tidbits that neocons sputter up in place of actual independent thoughts that make them seem like machines to me. And so I have to laugh, because otherwise I scream and that hurts my throat.

First off, you may want to provide a link that isn’t 3 years old? Second, in the report itself it is stated that no official count is being made so how do liberals get this number of 500,000 – 650,000. Some even say 1 million!

You liberals really think we are going to leave Iraq if a democrat is in the White House? We will have a major military presence in Iraq for decades!

Here is a link that is 2 years old. It’s age doesn’t invalidate the number, it only means that more have died.

Here you go, Ann. I realize this is only from October of 2006, and it’s from the leftist Wall Street journal. But this is a source of some of the numbers.

I don’t speak for all liberal, I don’t even speak for everyone on this site (much to everyone else’s relief, I’m sure.) Having said that, I think that it will take a democrat who is interested in governing to clean up the multitude of messes that your president will leave behind. Iraq is just one of those messes.
September 1st, 2007 at 6:40 pmSo, Michael,
where are some right-wing numbers that show the death rate to be much lower? What, you have no studies that refute the studies linked to above? Then how do you know that the numbers aren’t so high?

Given the depths of hypocrisy and total incompetence the trolls have to defend in Washington, Baghdad and elsewhere, and how long they have had to defend the party of pedophile protection and criminally organized corruption and closeted perverst, it is no wonder theyare getting tired and sending in their second stringers.
Hell the backwash even has a backwash.

You think these things because you are trained, conditioned and do as any cult follower would do – that is, you think as you are trained to think by mind numbing propaganda.
“Family values” equals “conservative” hahah That is a joke, right? And who defines these “values” your conditioners cherry pick? The conservatives’ Godfather? The man who made today’s conservatives into his image? Union hating, authoritarian, anti-science, homophobic and of course the big one for your Godfather, theocratic.
You know, the guy who guided and paid for the right’s rise to power and drive theocratic. This guy, your Godfather:

Conservative = Family values
haha What damn fraud that is. If that doesn’t show you that you are trained, you’re incapable of facing the facts, you are told what to think and you do as you are trained.
September 1st, 2007 at 7:37 pmHey michael, google “GOPAC memo newt gingrich” and you can read about one of the ways your cultic movement was conditioned – through language control, not by ideas or reality.
September 1st, 2007 at 7:43 pmAfter the gets out of government, she’ll retreat to the Hoover Instituion and write a book that blames other people.

good point – haven’t heard from or seen her for a while – could it be that chimpy will be getting another resignation letter soon?
September 1st, 2007 at 8:40 pmHey, no news is good news. Maybe she’s actually running the State Department and managing the foreign service professionals as they go about their business.
She actually isn’t a terrible diplomat when Shrub actually deigns to let her be one, and let the people who do this for a living take care of business. She did pretty well during the uprisings in Lebanon.
September 1st, 2007 at 9:04 pmIraq War advocacy and the “Birthpains of a New Middle East” comment prove that she is not qualified to be a human being let alone getting a position in Stanford that is supposed to be about educating young minds.
Educators need to demonstrate the ability to self-reflect and admit mistakes and learn from mistakes.

Yeah, she gave the ultra right wing miliartists in Isreal 6 weeks of cover and allowed them to destroy most of South Lebennon in a vain attempt to destroy Hezebollah, that succeded in making Hezebollah stronger, and the democratcially elected leaders of Palistine weaker.
September 1st, 2007 at 9:57 pmHey Michael old sock–that line about Republicans=Family Values is looking a little strained these days. I’m afraid the association is more like Republicans = “Pedophilia,” and “closeted,” and “Tearoom toe touching” and “Wide stance” in the mind of the general public.
And look at your leading GOP presidential candidates. Of the top two, both have a history of running as pro-choice, pro-gay rights social liberals. Only difference now is that one is trying to downplay it and the other is trying to convince the Goopers he’s had a change of heart. If you bozos really believed any of that crap you spout about “family values” these guys wouldn’t be able to raise a dime. But they’re both hauling in millions. Laying bare the simple truth:
As long as they come across as the authoritarian cult-leader Big Daddy your fearful, cringing little boxed in soul demands, you don’t care a damn about principles.
September 1st, 2007 at 11:36 pmI stumbled unto this thread, read a couple of posts by this CT character, could not believe anyone could be that blind and ignorant, and ended up reading the whoe thread.
September 1st, 2007 at 11:54 pmThere can only be one explanation: CT was home schooled in a southern state. Please don’t tell me that he went through our public school system. Please. I know our educational system has gotten terrible under repub rule/neglect, but if this CT is a product………. Yikes!
Poor Condi actually looks like a bucktooth version of Popeye’s Olive Oyl.
September 2nd, 2007 at 12:20 am“Well, I belive the title was ‘Bin Laden Determined to Attack Inside America.’”
Sorry, Condi, your voice quavered just enough that all the rest of us knew you were lying through that hole in your teeth.
You knew exactly what the title of the PDB was. You read it to him. And you were there when he told the CIA briefer, “It’s okay, son, you’ve covered your ass.” AND you were there when Tenet told you that an attack was iminent.
Since an attack on America did not fit your model of the world at that moment, you ignored it. As Desi Arnez used to say, “LUUUUUUUCIE….YOU GOT SOME ‘SPLAIN’ TO DO!!”
September 2nd, 2007 at 1:44 amLegacy? That’s a joke, right?
September 2nd, 2007 at 3:09 amWho was the “Soviet expert” in the GHW Bush administration that failed to notice that the FSU was collapsing?
Who was the worst NSA ever who failed to grasp the significance of “bin Laden plans to attack America”?
There are incompetent people who advance their careers by a combination of brown-nosing and good PR.
Where is the evidence that Condi is anything more than an empty suit?
Why does no one ever cite her scholarship on the FSU?
September 2nd, 2007 at 9:28 amNote: Legacyis the brand lable on her underwear!
September 2nd, 2007 at 11:41 amRice’s true legacy is her failure to be an honest broker in the middle east peace process. you know, that little matter that makes arabs everywhere mad at us. that’s the real stain.
September 2nd, 2007 at 1:31 pmI don’t think Stanford will take her as president. She’ll have to be content with Hoover’s Last Erection.
September 2nd, 2007 at 8:09 pmI think Condi’s incompetence and arrogance persist far longer than her culpability in creating the disaster in Iraq.
Don’t worry about the Iraq thing, Condi- all your failures are as a person.

a respectful and hopefully helpful suggestion to U.S. libraries when receiving bush legacy books: post a sign that says:”The views expressed are ABSOLUTELY NOT the views of the American people, only those of the delusional and dysfunctional wing of the bush administration and the few flunkies that held on while trying to distance themselves from the wreckage.”
September 4th, 2007 at 8:05 ampresident bush gets a presidential library with a grant from the Crayola Company and secretary rice gets a shoe emporium. there, she can tantilize her bigshot neocon friends with stories about her now famous footware: “these are the shoes i wore when my hus…uh, the president told saddam he had 48 hours to leave Iraq.”
