Moyers Responds To Wallace’s Baseless Slander: Repeated Requests To Rove Went Unanswered»

On Aug. 17, PBS’s Bill Moyers criticized Karl Rove for cynically invoking Christianity for political purposes while telling others that he is an agnostic. Moyers called Rove “a skeptic, a secular manipulator.”

Two days later, Rove appeared on Fox News Sunday and took on Moyers’s criticism. “I’m a Christian. I go to church. I’m an Episcopalian,” responded Rove. “You know, Mr. Moyers ought to do a little bit better research before he does another drive-by slander.”

Then on Aug. 26, Fox News Sunday host Chris Wallace criticized Moyers, stating that he needs to do “reporting 101“:

If you want to find out about someone’s religious beliefs, a good first step might be to ask him. … Of course, you never called Rove. That’s reporting 101, but it would have gotten in the way of a tasty story line about a non-believer flimflamming the Christian right. I guess, Bill, reporting is easier when you don’t worry about the facts.

Watch it:

But on Thursday, Rick Byrne, Director of Communications for Bill Moyers Journal, wrote that the show repeatedly tried to contact Rove. It never received a response:

For the record, Bill Moyers did ask Karl Rove to come on BILL MOYERS JOURNAL, by fax and by mail. These requests were made before Chris Wallace responded on-air on Fox News Sunday to Bill Moyers’ letter, and we still haven’t heard from Karl Rove.

Wallace should have spoken to Moyers and asked him if he tried to contact Rove, before baselessly accusing him of sloppy journalism. “That’s reporting 101.”

Interesting phrasing, “These requests were made before Chris Wallace responded on-air on Fox News Sunday”. Were they made before the Moyers segment was filmed? It would make a difference.

  5. Nancy Usher Says:

Chris Wallace and Faux News are a joke. I’d laugh if it all weren’t so tragic - I mean how many people have seen Bill Moyers repsonse compared to those that saw Wallace’s hit job on him.

Mike Wallace can’t be proud of the work his son does.

  8. Scooter'sNaive Says:

Episcopalian? Is that the religion of fruits and nuts? Funny Rove picked the one which is most digestable.

  9. Menehune Says:

Lemme guess…Chris Wallace called Karl Rove to ask if Bill Moyers had called…and Karl Rove lied.

  10. Jay Randal Says:

This looks like a press tizzy fight over stupid things. Rove can claim all kinds of nonsense, but his mean actions denote he is not real Christian.

  11. gummitch Says:

I’m sorry, but I don’t buy Amanda’s post, as much as I would like to. What Rick Byrne said is that Moyers had repeatedly tried to get Rove on the program; he never says that Moyers asked Rove a specific question about his piety. In fact, it appears that Moyers didn’t ask Rove any questions at all, because Rove wouldn’t come on the show (which is a given, really; Rove’s not going on television with anyone who won’t lob softballs to him).

  17. Jeremy Says:

Seeing as Think Progress didn’t see fit to give us an open thread of any sort today, I’ll just post this here:

Two Years ago today, we were in day 3 of shock. Finally, the National Guard starts bringing in needed manpower and materials, but in direct contrast to the show, other people who were coming in to help, such as a California rescue team and the Red Cross are denied access to the city due to ‘military’ and ’safety’ concerns. This set the show for a display that we’d never expected to see — men and women, children and elderly, begging for help, for food, and for rescue on American TV. This would begin the process of burning New Orleans into the national consciousness. Had this happened 1 year earlier, our history might have been greatly different, but timing is everything, and for 3 years, we’ve seen similar images of disinterest in people’s plights.

Images of those days will stay on forever. New Orleans residents, camped out in the Superdome in Louisiana heat, begging for food and water as the weakest of them began to secumb to the weather. People with guns turning away New Orleans evacuees from suburbs. The Red Cross and other emergency relief organizations turned away by the National guard. These images will forever define our country as a nation of people, in this case, a nation of jerks who don’t care for our fellow men. This is the topic for today.

Last night, I was talking to a friend who blurted out the ‘New Orleans people just need to stop asking for money and do things for themselves’ line. Before I start on my rant, let me explain something about this friend. He’s a good person, not one to let his fellow people suffer. Part of what made him utter this is the old-fashioned Southern Gentleman view that hard work can make anything happen. After he realized that money is required to make things happen in today’s world, he softened his stance, though he still believes that people need to, in his words, “come together.” Alas, if it were that simple. However, he’s been hammered with the idea that it’s the people of New Orleans’ fault that recovery hasn’t happened, and even he, a decent person of modest means himself, gave into the propaganda.

The propaganda is simple. The only one who will look into doing anything for you is you. Don’t look for help from others as that is against the American Way. Last time I checked, the American Way was to strive for the dream while still providing what you can to others. Churches emphasize that part of your duties on Earth is to give your time, money, and effort as much as you can to help those less fortunate than you. The Iraq War could be viewed in such a light, and in fact, the Conservatives try to paint it in that light, but the reality is that even when trying to help someone on the surface, the true goal of the current crop of conservatives is to suck money out of others around them to make their lives better. My friend sent me an article from USA Today that struck an uneasy chord. Several contractors hired for debris removal have gotten really fat over the work in Hurricane Katrina. For every dollar paid to the people who actually did the work, 5 to 6 dollars were kept by the contracting company (Katrina Promises). That’s a painful 80%+ overhead, for a job that isn’t completed to this day.

The people of New Orleans have been let down left and right. Money intended for hurricane reconstruction has flowed to the Mississippi coast, but New Orleans has only seen a trickle (according to one estimate I read, 90% of the reconstruction funds went to Mississippi, Alabama, and Florida). Favored contractors have been awarded no-bid contracts while local companies and workers are left high and dry. People are left to their own devices while conservatives crow about how they should have been prepared.

This ties into yesterday’s article about insurance. Again, it’s all about greed. Why care about the other guys, they could have done something to make themselves better. Is this the result of conservatism’s message? Is conservatism all about _me_? From what I’ve seen the last two years, it seems to be so. But this article must stay about Katrina. Today, Two Years Later, the water marks of the Storm of the Century remain. People continue to get fat on government pork while those who are most affected by the storm are left high and dry to fend for themselves, and the rest of us seem just peachy with saying that the storm’s aftermath was the fault of the City and State it touched, not the rest of us living in our comfortable homes away from the Gulf Coast.

The Me Generation has seen its message from God. Unlike Robertson, I won’t claim that God struck down New Orleans because of their sins. He struck down New Orleans and the rest of the gulf coast to remind us that greed _is_ a Deadly Sin. We all should see the lesson that this disaster put out.

  19. Del Capslock Says:

There’s also the fact that Rove is lying about his religious affiliations. He’s no more religious than Ann Coulter, Rush Limbaugh, or Sean Hannity. Too them, Christianity is a badge of political identity, nothing more.

If you polled the Republican political leadership and they were honest, which they are not, you would find relatively few actual believers, i.e., truly beleive the Christian dogma that Christ is the son of God, was immaculately conceived, etc. It is as Moyers says, Christianity is a very convenient way to manipulate voters.

  20. Man in the Middle Says:

    #5

How would you know how Mike Wallace feels about his son?

Presuming Moyers did contact Rove in a timely fashion and afford him an opportunity to respond, Rove’s alleged lack of response doesn’t justify Moyers blatantly gossiping about the man.

  21. Phaedrus Says:

Don’t mean to pester, but what was the timing of the request to Rove? PBS says they asked before Wallace’s report… but did they ask before they filmed the piece? If they did, good. If not, then it looks like they did a hit piece on Rove and then either asked him to respond or got wind of Wallace’s criticism and were trying damage control.

  22. Carlester Says:

Moyers will be in trouble if Rove comes out and agrees to be interviewed by turdhead billyboy now wont he?

  23. katy Says:

i can see your point, gummitch, about that specific detail…
but the subject is the fact that “Repeated Requests…Went Unanswered”
… i suppose byrne/moyers could have asked the question along with those requests, but the important fact is, they got no answers…

i was curious as to the length of time this has taken… guess it gets better legs if the shows themselves carry the responses…

hey p, do you know what “on-air” means?
kinda the same difference as “filmed”…

  24. hmbnancy Says:

At the heart of this issue, as I see it, is that fact that prominent public servants of this administration only grant interviews to favored journalists and news organizations who “cooperate” with their tight control of information never imagining that they might have an obligation, as public servants, to the public at large.

It’s their practice of exclusivity of access that shows their deep disdain of the democratic process so clearly.

  25. Starve-A-Bush_Feed-A-Beaver Says:

Whether Moyers attempted to contact Rove or not, I don’t see what difference it would make. Of course Rove would never admit that he used the religious right for political purposes and that he himself is not a religious man. To Rove, twisting the truth to his purposes is a basic component of his personality and it’s what he’s been doing his entire professional life. Rove might tell the truth under oath but don’t ever expect a truthful answer about anything from the guy otherwise.

A better source than Rove himself is a percipient witness to Rove’s behavior. David Kuo’s book “Tempting Faith” documents the hypocrisy of those in the Bush Administration and how they used the religious right. In the book, Kuo documents how Rove called Evangelicals “the nuts” and how in private he treated faith-based matters with disdain while publicly pretending to support them. Kuo served as Special Assistant to the President and Deputy Director of the White House Office of Faith-Based and Community Initiatives for several years before getting fed up with these guys.

  27. Mark Says:

There are two apparently independent sources that claim Rove is an unbeliever - Christopher Hitchens and Rove biographer Wayne Slater.

Rove in response has stated that he is an Episcopalian.

I think we ought to research the possibility that it was the Episcopal Church that is spreading the story that Karl is an agnostic.

If only Phaedrus could have been equally scrutinizing the FOX reports of Bush/Cheney WMDs (mushroom cloud) in Iraq in 2002. Or skeptical of the Bush defense of Valerie Plame’s outing in 2003.

“I don’t mean to pester”, but why aren’t you questioning the timing of Rove’s whining? There MAY be more here than meets the eye, but you need to look in the mirror to find answers.

    Man in the Middle -

It’s not gossip if Rove pushed for legislation based on faith and engineered campaigns based on winning the religious right. Both of which he did.

These questions, especially in the light of Craig, go to the heart of the hypocrisy of telling others how they should live, or in the case of faith based initiatives, how the government should spend our money.

But really, everyone knows that this whole moral values, Christianity bit is just an act by politicians on both sides. I probably don’t need to explain to you that politician do things that they don’t believe in order to win elections. I’m a little surprised that that Moyers pointing out the obvious is a shock to you.

Well, it looks like you’re as craven a liar as Wallace, whose only use, by the way, is as Bill Clinton’s punching bag. Do you remember how Clinton destroyed that little punk? Moyers had several sources detailing Rove’s atheistic leanings, uncluding Rove’s own actions, which are in no way relective of a Christian upbringing or philosophy. So stop you’re pitiful whining and take your lumps. You idiots allowed this fat, blubbering atheist Nazi to take your party over and turn it into the biggest enemy America has faced since WW2, now suck it up and live with it, instead of trying to pass the blame off on someone else. He didn’t call him an atheist, he called him a self-proclaimed agnostic and a hypocrite. This was based on statements made by Rove to others and based on his behavior while working for Bush.

Like yourself, Chris Wallace distorted reality for a political agenda.

Well, as I have already said, your own lies take any credilibilty you might have had away. Rove did not refuse to come on Moyer’s show; he refused to make any response whatsoever. In journalism, that means that Rove had no argument, so it is the truth. Moyers reported the truth, and you can’t take the truth. Nothing new for your morally bereft and corrupt party, but your crying and whining about it doesn’t change anything.

If Chris Wallace really was interested in finding out the truth of Rove’s supposed religious commitment, he should have asked Rove to list the churches he has been affiliated with for the last 6 years. My bet is on the fact that Rove couldn’t do that, thereby proving that Rove is not a religious person and Moyers being right.

Noam Chomsky is often called anti-American because of his continuous criticism of our Foreign Policy. His critics like to point out the even more outrageous abuses of other countries, and ask why he doesn’t spend time on those. His response is that he loves America, of course, and it pains him when the country he loves acts in such a manner.
The issue here is similar. We need to question and challenge our (progressive) sources. It is this constant testing that gives progressives confidence in them. If Bill Moyers did a piece on Rove’s religion without inviting him to input or response, that was bad. That appears to be what happened. The funny answer given by the Moyers rep leads me to believe that they contacted Rove AFTER the piece was finished. I’m not a journalist, but that seems to be problematic.

PS the whole owl god thing is a red herring. It doesn’t appear the Bill Moyers was dis-ing religion, but Rove’s hypocracy.

  66. Arn Gunnutes Says:

The ones who accused Clinton of being immoral and a “bad, nasty boy”?

    And PEDOPHILE Mark Foley???

These HYPOCRITES are the ULTIMATE “sliding scale” in “morals”.

The BIG word is “if”. IF Moyers didn’t call Rove BEFORE doing his piece, then you are right—bad!

However, IF Moyers didn’t contact Rove BEFORE doing his piece, wouldn’t Rove’s people be POINTING THIS OUT? One would think so.

The “if” and “appears to be” are the HALLMARKS of Rove, Rush, O’Dildo, etc.

    RUMOR and INNUENDO.

So, until we know the “if” part, the “appears to be” is only INNUENDO.

I’m sure Moyers’ group could be contacted for their response, and unlike Rove, I’m sure they could respond, thus eliminating the “if”…

I agree. Moyers’ office should be contacted. And I believe that you will find that he DID attempt to contact Rove BEFORE he wrote the article.

if the people around rove say that he is not a christian, what does that say about the value he puts on his faith? while no one can judge the true state of one’s soul, actions are open for all to see. saying that you are a christian doesn’t make you a christian any more that saying that you are a car makes you a car.

Rove and Bush have LIED us into war, and the BLOOD of a MILLION Iraqis and 4000 US soldiers is on THEIR HANDS.

Their ACTIONS show that they are NOT following the Word of Jesus.

ACTIONS (of LIES and Geoncide) speak louder than WORDS (of LIARS and MURDERERS Rove and Bush).

People who SAY they are “saved” by Jesus, but then LIE and MURDER their fellow man are NOT following His Word.

In the Bible, Jesus has said that he will tell their kind “depart from me. I KNOW YOU NOT”.

Sorry, FACTS are FACTS are POSTED.

That YOU choose to DENY the FACTS tells all.

A TRAITOR to the USA, just like Bush, who puts PARTY above COUNTRY.

If you actually have any REAL POINTS, other than denying the TRUTH, tell us WHY (with FACTS) Moyers is NOT a REAL JOURNALIST,

and WHY Rove is NOT a PROPAGANDIST.

    I’ll START:

    1. Moyers has been a JOURNALIST for 50 years, has won MANY awards for JOURNALISM and uses FACTS for his stories.

    2. Rove, the protege of Lee Atwater, MASTER PROPAGANDIST, got FIRED from Bush 41 campaign for his DIRTY TRICKS.

When Atwater was on his DEATH BED, dying of cancer, he RENOUNCED his EVIL DEEDS and asked Rove to promise to DO THE SAME.

Rove WOULD NOT. Therefore, he is the MASTER PROPAGANDIST of our time, and truly “Bush’s BRAIN”.

Got FACTS to support your points?

    Or just rants and innuendos??

Bush REFUSES to TESTIFY UNDER OATH TO THE 9/11 Commission.

Bush COMMUTES the sentence of CONVICTED FELON Scooter Libby, who was one of SEVEN people to expose our CIA WMD spy, thus sabotaging NATIONAL SECURITY.

Pollster Frank Luntz told the Bushies to START EVERY SPEECH about Iraq with the words 9/11, thus LINKING THEM.

    MAJOR PROPAGANDA!

Again, a START, and YOU can look up MANY MORE if you WANTED to.

    Your DENIALS say you DON’T.

Again, you are just another ENEMY of the USA like Bush, Rove, Libby, etc.

I hope a PATRIOTIC US Soldier FRAGS Rove for his LIES.

    Comment by michael — September 1, 2007

    No one YET convicted.

When a Democratic president gets in, this WILL change once we have INVESTIGATIONS of Iraq and also Bush’s ties to the Bin Ladens.

And the Downing Street memorandum revealed 2 years ago showed that they KNEW the WMD’s were NOT there, and that

The US was FIXING INTELLIGENCE around the LIE that there WERE.

The memo (minutes of the Intel Meeting) are first on the list. READ:

    http://www.afterdowningstreet.org/?q=node/840

So, the BRITISH (in a SECRET intelligence meeting) says Bush LIED…

After THAT, any more DEATH resulting was the DIRECT RESULT of the LIES of TRAITOR Bush and the PNAC.

YOU will certainly dismiss the British Intel Report as “leftist” or some other BS, but then again, YOU and Bush and Rove and Libby and Cheney, etc., are TRAITORS to the USA.

And Bush and Rove do NOT follow the Word of Jesus Christ.

If YOU support their actions of LIES and WAR of AGGRESSION,

The article cites Johns Hopkins University as its main source, along with the U.N.

The TITLE of the Article is: “ONE MILLION DEAD, TWO MILLION WOUNDED, 3 MILLION DISPLACED”,

And don’t bother about the “weak U.N.” BS. If Bush had truly gone for the SECOND resolution with the U.N. concerning Iraq,

they would have TURNED HIM DOWN.

So was born the “Coalition of The ‘Willing’”.

    A WAR of AGGRESSION.

    An ILLEGAL and CRIMINAL WAR.

And the Bin Ladens FUNDED Bush’s failed oil businesses (which he STILL profited from by ILLEGAL insider trading).

    And Osama is STILL FREE.

And we are in a QUAGMIRE caused by TRAITOR Bush and his PNAC WAR CRIMINALS.

By the way, it’s FUNNY how “michael” doesn’t dispute the link to the Downing Street Minutes of the British Intel.

Nor does he/she/it dispute the REST of the Bush LIES I have posted with any kind of FACTS.

  103. michael Says:

I don’t CLAIM to be “better” because I am a CHRISTIAN (I AM a Christian).

It’s these HYPOCRITES like Diaper/Dildo Vitter, and Larry “bad, nasty boy” Craig who use their “christianity” to demean and defame others

by their “holier than thou” BS. As well as PROPAGANDISTS like Karl Rove and George Bush and Fox “news”.

They have USED God and Jesus as their method to advance their POLITICAL AGENDA and the

    GENOCIDE that they have committed.

And as such have KILLED IN THE NAME OF GOD, the EXACT thing that they accuse the “muzzies” of doing.

And Bush was FUNDED by the Bin Ladens and is an OIL WHORBAG for the Saudi FINANCIERS of Al Queda in Iraq.

    And Osama is STILL FREE.

As far as Luke 6:27-38, about PRAYING FOR ONE’S enemies, is THAT what the “christians” who support MURDERERS like Bush do?

    NOPE.

    But I DO.

    It doesn’t make me BETTER.

It DOES say that Bush and his MURDERERS do NOT follow the Word of God NOR Jesus Christ. And their supporters…

ONE MILLION IRAQIS and 4000 US Soldiers, DEAD for the LIES of Bush and his PNAC TRAITORS…

  111. Jason M. Hendler Says:

The above story states that Moyers’ requests to have Rove come on his show came before Chris Wallace’s statements, but that is NOT the point.

Did political hack Moyers ASK Rove about his religion prior to publishing his smear piece about Rove?

Considering that Moyers has been so slow to respond to Chris Wallace, I suspect that Moyers has been looking for a way to weasel out of admitting he failed Journalism 101 by not asking Rove about his religion prior to publishing his smear piece, and is now trying to state that Rove ignored Moyers after he published it, which is irrelevent.

Obviously you haven’t checked your facts. Seen Mr. Coulters site recently? The only one advertising on Mr. Coulters site is Mr. Coulter, selling his books. I forget what the last delusional hate comment he made, but it was apparently bizarre enough for her sponsors to pull out of her web site and quit Mr. coulter. You can have your own opinion, (do us a favor and keep it to yourself) but you can’t make up your own facts.

  117. Arn Gunnutes Says:

Did political hack Moyers ASK Rove about his religion prior to publishing his smear piece about Rove?

Seems like he TRIED to contact Rove to verify such, but Rove was too CHICKEN(hawk) to reply.

So, Moyers asked people who knew Rove WELL.

What they told him, admittedly CREDIBLE SOURCES, is that Rove was NOT a really strong believer, pretty much an agnostic.

Moyers is a COMPETENT JOURNALIST with YEARS of AWARDS for being a TOP JOURNALIST.

    Wallace has NONE…

There are many colors of his trickery. Wallace has the IQ of a rock in comparison. Bill Moyer has a conscience and a drive for the truth. What does Wallace have other than a brown nose and loud mouth.
