Bush makes surprise visit to Iraq.

By Faiz Shakir on Sep 3rd, 2007 at 8:53 am

Bush makes surprise visit to Iraq.»

“President Bush made a surprise visit to Iraq on Monday, using the war zone as a backdrop to argue his case that the buildup of U.S. troops is helping stabilizing the nation.” On his way to the APEC summit in Australia, Bush made a detour to Iraq, landing at an air base in a remote part of Anbar province. Accompanied by security aides Condoleezza Rice, Robert Gates, and Stephen Hadley, Bush’s visit came just hours after British forces completed their pullout from Basra. “Residents of Basra cheered the withdrawal.”

UPDATE: “The president stopped at a small building where a Marine Cobra pilot briefed him about the positives and negatives of current troop rotations. He told the president that troops were not getting enough time at home and did not have enough time for training. ‘Morale?’ asked Bush. ‘How’s morale?’ ‘Very high sir,’ the pilot, Capt. Lee Hemming, said.” ”There are some people who might try to deride this trip as a photo opportunity,” White House deputy press secretary Dana Perino said. ”We wholeheartedly disagree.”

Clearly, this is a last resort tactic on Bush’s part. He’s hoping that his visit will spin more positive propaganda regarding the “progress”(hah!) in Iraq. Nothing he does these days matters one iota to the american people. He’s become a cipher.

  2. Badger Says:

The White House also showed how much they cared about our city when he this press release was issued

Thank you. Good afternoon. On Monday, President Bush will leave Washington and travel to Sidney, Australia, to attend the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation leaders meeting

But it will be the first time that he will have the opportunity to enjoy the hospitality of Sidney-siders

The embarrassing misspelling of Sydney was quickly corrected when Australian Reporters pointed it out, but Not everywhere got the memo.

    Good Grief!

  3. veritas Says:

    Hi Badger!
Did you see the huge “wall” they have to built because of the level of hatred for Bush in Sydney?

  4. veritas Says:

As an american I find that utterly embarrassing that there is so much hatred for the leader of our country; of course, he’s earned it quite handily both internationally and nationally.

  5. veritas Says:

What moron is writing Bush’s press releases these days? Obviously, it’s one of his teenage proteges who have less sense than brains.

Off topic but news that Bush’s ‘war crimes’ will not go unnoticed. Evidently, the international war crimes tribunal is setting the stage for a Nuremberg-esque trial of Bush & Co.

  7. Badger Says:

Good morning veritas..yeah I saw pictures of the Wall. It will probably cost John Howard his reelection…..that and the Iraq war.

  9. Tobey Tall Says:

But will Maliki visit him ????????? in the remote airbase

Sawt al-Iraq reports in Arabic that Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki has pledged not to allow Iraq to become a base for regional or international powers to settle scores. (This announcement seems to me to be an attempt to forewarn the Bush administration that it may not use Iraq as a base for an attack on Iran).

OK him and what army? Which army gonna fight this fight that noone gives a crap about?

A British professor stressed that Iran’s nuclear program is perfectly lawful and in accordance with international rules and measures.

  15. Roy Eidelson Says:

The president’s brief visit to Iraq suggests just how large the White House’s latest marketing campaign will be. He will now be able to offer his own personal “eye witness” accounts of progress there. But from a psychological perspective, the warmongering ahead will likely continue to focus on the American public’s core concerns about issues of vulnerability, injustice, distrust, superiority, and helplessness. I examine how the Bush administration has employed this strategy in brief online video entitled “Resisting the Drums of War.” It’s available for viewing HERE.

  16. Tobey Tall Says:

British forces have completed their withdrawal from the southern city of Basra and handed over their city center base to the Iraqi army.

  17. veritas Says:

Silence, over time, becomes “complicity”. Most of Congress now is also complicit in the allowance of war crimes by this administration. Certainly the Republican Congress which preceeded this one is! As for the people whose voices have been effectively squelched by the Patriot Act, only time will reflect how much “culpability” the rest of the world will hold american citizens to in all of this. Certainly, we’ve all been outraged by the people who sat back while Hitler committed his crimes….not that much different from that which we are permitted by our silence right now….and have been for 6 long years.

History will certainly judge the Republican party harshly for “enabling” this behavior and may also judge this generation of americans in the same vein - lest we wake up and begin to do something about it.

Certainly our Congressmen need a huge boot in the arss right now to awaken them and/or removal from office for their continued complicity in the destruction of not only our constitution but international law regarding war crimes. This will come back to haunt the members of Congress over the past 6 years as they each will be held accountable for their vote to enable the torture and violation of international law as well. I believe we will also see the day when this entire administration will be placed on trial, ala Nuremberg style, and convicted. This will be a sad day in american history - a travesty actually - but the larger travesty is that we’ve all sat lazily back and knowingly permitted it.

  24. veritas Says:

#19 Bush going to Iraq is definitely pulling out all stops since this is the last place on earth he’d desire to be. You KNOW they’re desperate with this transparent tactic.

  25. Jake D. Says:

    Lede story from CNN.com:

“The White House said the base was chosen because of the “remarkable turnaround” in the province. Bush has hailed Anbar — a Sunni province west of Baghdad — as a success, citing the U.S. military’s alliance with tribal leaders in fighting al Qaeda in Iraq . . . In 2003, Bush made a surprise visit to U.S. forces in Iraq on Thanksgiving.”

    GO BUSH!!!

  26. veritas Says:

Tobey: Thanks for the link. Of course, this whuss wouldn’t go into Baghdad. What a joke if they think they will really pull this charade off. Why didn’t he just “stage it” in some studio in LA, for cripes sake?

It is also interesting that when it comes to LABOR issues, and in this case Labor Day, the President runs for cover in Iraq. To be propped up by the pawns he has created through the Pentagon.

  31. veritas Says:

SELECTIVE STAGING is precisely what Bush’s trip is. Sorry Dumbo - the people are onto you - big time. The people are buying none of this hard sell campaign so his trip is totally in vain.

Bush’s Iraq Visit = HUGE PIMP JOB ON THE AMERICAN PUBLIC.

  32. veritas Says:

I see that our little worm-troll has added a very appropriate “D” to his moniker - “D” for ddddddddddddouchebag perhaps?

  33. Tobey Tall Says:

Behind the scenes, says Gulf News, the Bush administration is putting pressure on PM Nuri al-Maliki to cancel the proposed visit of Iranian President Mahmud Ahmadinejad to Baghdad. The Bahraini newspaper’s Iraq sources told it that the Iraqi government is split on the visit. If you attend closely to the subsequent comments, you can clearly see that the Supreme Islamic Iraqi Council of Abdul Aziz al-Hakim favors the visit (SIIC is also Bush’s best friend in Iraq), and the Sunni Arab bloc, the Iraqi Accord Front, has the most severe reservations.

  34. Dumb_Fox Says:

“Bush made a detour to Iraq, landing at an air base in a remote part of Anbar province.”

So presumably he’s going to point to the progress in the unhabited regions of Iraq. Genius.

Wonder which Repuke will be this weeks’ news? I think it’s the one who left threatening messages to residents who wrote something unflattering about him taking money from the gaming industry….he left two threatening messages and will probably be the next “Repulsive Repuke” scandal.

    Comment by Jake D. — September 3, 2007 @ 9:28 am

Only in his ability to destrpy the Republican party will he be above any Dem president. he will be thanked by generations of Americans for finally, in his greed and incompetence, exposing the GOP as the antiAmericam, closet-dwelling, traitor-ridden crime cabal we on the Left always knew it was. that will be his greatest, nay, his only, accomplishment of a positive nature for the history books. this country will be returned to its liberal ways if it is to survive, if Bush hasn’t already raped and pillaged beyong repair. Bush has failed at everything a president should be and do, and will be remembered as a stain on the Constitution; Bill Clinton, even now, has the respect of the historians for doing the job right. Bush will never have that, never.

  54. veritas Says:

Poof! Like magic - the Reputards in Congress, one by one, will be brought down by their own criminal behavior. Any individual left still supporting the Party of Criminals will find that they’ve become totally irrelevant to the new policical landscape of this country. This is why the trolls here are beginning to look so disassociated from reality with nothing credible to spin any longer. Their “heroes” like Rove, Rummy, and Gonzo have screwed them by leaving the sinking ship. It can’t feel too warm and fuzzy to realize that anyone with a brain left in their head is jumping ship and leaving Dodge. The trolls, however, are pretty far down the food chain as well as the brainchain so it will take them some time to realize that they’ve become totally eclipsed.

Big IF their Jason. If there is ever democracy in Iraq. Bush plans on dumping his 6 month war, turned into a 5 year quagmire in the next Presidents lap. Ergo he couldn’t possibly be credited with Democracy in Iraq.

right.. I truly have no doubt we are bribing these chieftans with multimillion dollar payoffs and massive weapon shipments. I wonder how long the goodwill will last. It still doesnt make the Sunnis any more friendly to the central government.

This all is sure a spectacle, i must say…its morbidly fascinating to watch such a massive, desparate attempt to market a world altering strategic fiasco.

I bet you anything this trip wasnt planned until Warner dropped his bombshell a week or so ago. I’m sure what he said sent shockwaves through the republican establishment and make them desparate for some sort of distraction.

I am so glad the Government Accountability Office, one of the last bastions of ACCOUNTABILITY in this government, leaked the miserable benchmark report card before the “we know where the weapons are” crew had a chance to doctor it..

These idiots are just desparately trying to buy time (with our tax dollars) until they can hand this off to a democratic president. Iraq is going to choose to ally itself with Iran and theres going to be nothing we can do about it, because it will be their democratic choice.

Our country is guilty of war crimes, and if we don’t speak out against it, we are complicit.

    http://www.freep.com/ apps/ pbcs.dll/ article?AID=/ 20070825/ NEWS06/ 708250330/ -1/ RSS07

President George W. Bush should forget about forging a democracy in Iraq and focus on stabilizing the country and combating Islamic extremists, Michigan’s top congressional Republican on foreign intelligence said Friday.
“The U.S. effort to install a democracy in Iraq within three to five years was a flawed strategy with little chance of succeeding, U.S. Rep. Peter Hoekstra said Friday.”
After meeting recently with Iraq’s Sunni Arab tribal leaders, Hoekstra said, he’s reversed his initial support for Bush’s stated goal of establishing a democracy in Iraq as justification for invading in 2003. “They’re not looking for a county commission to tell them what to do. They have a thousand years of experience of tribal culture that says, ‘This is how we deliver services, keep security and stability.’ “

Dont bother mentioning guys like Baird or Lieberman, they have been co-opted by Cheney’s mind control device and are now traitorous scum. But Hoekstra…now THERE is a man of insight and obvious intelligence and all because he opposes the war.

What Jake doesn’t tell you is he answers those he has put on the list all the time, directly. It’s all a scam. He’s answered me many times, and I’m a charter member of the list. Good enough for me, Margaret (I also address other matters “for the record” just in case someone NOT on the “Ignore List” is intrested — I certainly would want to bother someone already on the “Ignore List”). I graduated, took, and passed the California bar exam in 1961. I don’t recall my exact score (I don’t think they even gave an exact score back then, just a congratulatory letter saying you passed, which was all I needed). There were five digits in my bar number (I’m retired, as you may recall). As for professor names, I do recall Herbert Packer and someone named Smith, but I don’t remember the first name. That was a long time ago. Are you a lawyer? If so, are you still practicing? Do you recall all of these details?

I’m glad you brought that up, Jake. I’ve been waiting for the right time to advocate the re-introduction of slavery based on Bibliical verse. Do you think now would be good time?

“When you buy a Hebrew slave, six years shall he serve; and in the seventh shall he go out free, for nothing. If he came in by himself, he shall go out by himself: if he were married, then his wife shall go out with him. If his master has given him a wife, and she has borne him sons or daughters, the wife and the children shall be her master’s, and he shall go out by himself. And if the slave shall plainly say, I love my master, my wife, and my children; I will not go out free: then his master shall bring him unto God, and he shall bring him to the door or unto the door-post, and his master shall bore his ear through with an awl, and he shall be his slave forever.”

Margaret, it takes time to Google when is trying to create a convincing online persona.

For example, you type “professional responsibility exam” as was referenced by you into Google, and it throws out” MPRE” and lo and behold the persona has a convincing acronym to throw out there.

Even better, click on the MPRE wiki, and there’s the reference to Watergate, lending even more seeming credence to the persona’s familiarity with the term.

Now who would really know, right off the top of their head, that the MPRE wasn’t around until after Watergate unless that person looked it up. Wouldn’t it make more sense to say, “It wasn’t required when I took the bar.” No, in order to bolster the fabrication, you add some random detail.

Kinda like criminals do when relating their alibis. They think the more detail they can offer makes them more convincing. Quite the opposite.

As for your hatred of women and their equal rights, figures. You self loathing types prefer the company of other men in bathroom stalls. Poor thing! It’s not the fault of women that you’re in the closet!

What’s really crazy is that she suffered this pinched nerve back in the spring, and subsequently took a trip to Africa.

This is the first lady who recently completed a week-long trip through Africa, spanning 17,000 miles in the military’s Boeing 757 named Bright Star for her voyage. The journey in late June carried Mrs. Bush to Africa and across the continent — from Senegal to Mozambique, and from Zambia to Mali, before flying on to Kennebunkport, Me., over the course of five days.

Earlier this year, Vice President Dick Cheney also set out for Australia, via Tokyo and Guam, aboard the 757, Air Force Two in that configuration. Just before the vice president’s takeoff, Cheney’s staff announced his wife, Lynne, would not accompany him because of the death of a family friend.
