Bush’s hope for successor: ’stay longer’ in Iraq.»

In Robert Draper’s book on the Bush presidency, “Dead Certain,” Bush says the goal of his Iraq strategy is to play it out until “October-November.” That is when he hopes the Iraq troop increase will finally show enough results to help him achieve the central goal of his remaining time in office: “To get us in a position where the presidential candidates will be comfortable about sustaining a presence,” and, he said later, “stay longer.”

UPDATE: Some other highlights from the Draper book:

– Karl Rove told Bush he should not tap Cheney for Vice President
– Bush hopes to make a lot of cash delivering speeches after his presidency is over… while running a “fantastic Freedom Institute
– Bush “can’t remember” one of the biggest mistakes in post-war Iraq: disbanding the Iraqi army
– The White House staff, including Dan Bartlett and Karl Rove, were “constantly at war” with one another
– Bush cries a lot

UPDATE II: Carpetbagger highlights a few other interesting portions from Draper’s book.

Bush’s strategy is clear to me. Fabricate just enough ” light at the end of the tunnel”, turned corners, and progress made, to dump the Iraq fiasco into the democrats lap next year….and then blame them for losing Iraq.
This is the same strategy they used after the Viet Nam war.

President George W. Bush should forget about forging a democracy in Iraq and focus on stabilizing the country and combating Islamic extremists, Michigan’s top congressional Republican on foreign intelligence said Friday.

U.S. Rep. Peter Hoekstra said Iraq’s tribal, Islamic culture is not receptive to democratic ideals. He said Bush should consider other ways to control Iraq, whose government, he said, is floundering under Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki.

Heres a question for ya Jake, still think them Sunnis [That regime the US went to remove from power] want democracy?

I bet Jake wont answer this and I am not on his ignore list.

If we are to agree with Petraeus and Bush&Co on the surge, the war, and what they call progress, they are suggesting at least ten years — that means a 15-year war (at least) in Iraq!!

So Jake, another question, I’m sure you’ll skip, do you think this freedom operation was worth it considering the \/\/ admin is now backing the very ‘oppressive’ Sunnis we went to remove from power?

Bush also says he wants to refill his “coffers” and go on a speaking engagement tour where he can earn $50 thousand to $75 thousand a pop, because he thinks his Dad earns that much and so does Clinton.

Jake…Muhammed received his revelations in around 610 AD, which is the seventh century. Sunnis weren’t even Sunnis in the sixth century. The islamic cultures embraced the concept of “zero” which the dark ages christians feared…so they wouldn’t be confused by this. The first century went from the birth of christ untill 99 AD. 100 AD began the second century etc……

That’s a great parallel, Jake. One country has a history of unity (and isolation) going back centuries, no real sectarian divisions and are essentially ordered by their god to embrace modernism and democracy and live through an occupation that invests in rebuilding their war-torn infrastructure and the other . . . ? Not so much.

Your belief that the occupation has anything to do with democracy, though, is naive in the extreme.

What a topsy-turvy universe you inhabit, Jake. Pick the one president most likely to be viewed in future generations as the worst to infest the White House in more than 200 years. Pick the president who has failed miserably to achieve anything, domestically or overseas, except to enrich the corporate class. I’m sure he’s a big hit with your golf buddies, though, none of whom are mailing back their social security checks to bolster the economy.

Anybody have a clue as to what these ‘investors’ are expecting?

The two sales are being referred to by market traders as “bin Laden trades” because only an event on the scale of 9-11 could make these short-sell options valuable.

There are 65,000 contracts @ $750.00 for the SPX 700 calls for open interest. That controls 6.5 million shares at $750 = $4.5 Billion. Not a single trade. But quite a bit of $$ on a contract that is 700 points away from current value. No one would buy that deep “in the money” calls. No reason to. So if they were sold looks like someone betting on massive dislocation. Lots of very strange option activity that I haven’t seen before.

The entity or individual offering these sales can only make money if the market drops 30%-50% within the next four weeks. If the market does not drop, the entity or individual involved stands to lose over $1 billion just for engaging in these contracts!

Clearly, someone knows something big is going to happen BEFORE the options expire on Sept. 21.

    THEORIES:

The following theories are being discussed widely within the stock and options markets today regarding the enormous and very unusual activity reported above and two stories below. Those theories are:

    1) A massive terrorist attack is going to take place before Sept. 21 to tank the markets, OR;

    2) China, reeling over losing $10 Billion in bad loans to the sub-prime mortgage collapse presently taking place, is going to dump US currency and tank all of Capitalism with a Communist financial revolution. Either scenario is bad and the clock is ticking. The drop-dead date of these contracts is September 21. Whatever is going to happen MUST take place between now and then or the folks involved in these contracts will lose over $1 billion for having engaged in this activity.

“$1.78 Billion Bet that Stock Markets will crash by third week in September Anonymous Stock Trader Sells 10K Contracts on EVERY S&P/Y “Strike” Shorts Stocks “in the money” effectively selling all his SPY holdings for cash up front without pressuring the market downward.

  68. Fran Says:

This theatrical visit by Bush to Iraq is a stunt to move the headlines past the bad press the Republican’s have been getting. What, no mission accomplished signes to greet Bush? That Bush graduated from both Yale and Harvard is beyond belief. The book coming out about Bush tomorrow describes a guy approaching the age of a senior citizen who still acts like a frat boy. Swatting flies while being interviewed, chomping on an unlit cigar, and with boots propped up on the coffee table, with no sympathy from his wife. he says He says he has God’s shoulder to cry on. What a moronic excuse for a president!

I’ve been following this story, and am curious but cautious. There’s also about 61,000 put options betting that the S&P will go up to 1700 by 9/21. If it’s the same investors, they stand to gain either way. Which then begs the question - is some group of investors simply trying to spook the market by creating buzz with a huge “Bin Laden Trade” and then profiting off the loss?

…from what i read, that pelosi is NOT ruling out impeachment…

    http://www.talkradionews.com/ newsandcommentary/ article.php?articleID=827
use cntrl “f” to find the word “impeach”, and read from there…

    for example:

    Mike Tomaski:
I read where Jay Ensley is going to introduce language today to impeach the Attorney General of whom you spoke. How do you feel about that? Would you support that?

    Pelosi:
Well I would like us to stay focused on our agenda for this week. I tell you our big issue today and tomorrow will be S-Chip […] we’re going to do our energy bill this week as well. So I’d like to see it be a week where we just everyday go out there and say the legislation process has worked its will and this is what we’re sending to the President.
I have no objection to somebody introducing whatever they do, but I would hope the focus would be on accomplishments that we have for the American people.
There is some sentiment in the public that a lot of what we do it political when it comes to the administration, believe it or not. It would be impossible to exaggerate how they have taken our country down in terms of democratic principles- they the White House. However what we want to do is show accomplishment and then say, “okay we’ve made this difference, now lets deal with some of these issues.”
We’ve for a long time jnow had Henry Waxman and others, Mr. Conyers and others pointing out what they are doing wrong. We have a contempt of congress that is lively right now. The committee acted, hopefully the administration will respond. If they do not we’ll have to act upon that.
So we have a full plate. If they want to add that to the plate, that’s fine but I don’t want it to be at the expense of reform, children’s health, energy independence.
    […]

go nancy… sounds like she’s being very careful to me…
    go congress!

When it came to perhaps the pivotal decision of the war, America’s first MBA President simply acted like an absentee landlord.

    What a pussy.

  91. jb Says:

He’s been in over his head since day one. Kept afloat by GOP and criminal corporate power and money. Now that his term is drawing to a close, the power brokers are moving on and Bush is left crying a lot. Who would pay to hear this stain on humanity speak? Lock him up!

Oh, I dunno. That’s one thing Brusch and I have in common. Everytime I read about his latest flight of insanity, I cry too!

    WTF???

Is he angling for a comic book deal w/ Marvel?

Yeah, guess you missed the part where this was reported by the pentagon, and number of assessments in Iraq. For someone that claims to be a lawyer, you’re as dumb as a bag of sh!t!

  98. Solitaire Says:

“Fantastic Freedom Institute” as a comic book deal with Marvel? What else would you expect from a 14 year old dry drunk?
Well, I guess you could expect self pity, tears, overblown pride, bluster and mistake after mistake after mistake. That’s what we have had for the past seven years. I’m so fed up with this guy, I can suggest only one cure; Impeach. Now. Fast!~ He can start his comic deal right away.

    “Impeach. Now. Fast!”

NO, NO, NO!!! That would make Cheney President. This would really be from the frying pan and into the fire.

Bush is merely dangerously incompetent. Cheney is out and out evil.

  101. CaptainVideo Says:

The data shows that while there have been improvements in some parts of the country, for the country as a whole, things are still getting worse. The closer we get to the election, the greater the demand by the American people that we get out.

  105. The Republic of Stupidity Says:

    Make that “The Insurance Policy”.

  106. Ret. Col. Jack Ripper Says:

Yikes. Our country is being run into the ground by a snivleing little religious fanatic who crys to god??!!! And, he somehow can’t remember one of the biggest mistakes of his administration. The guy is frickin certifiable! I’ll be holding my breath until January of 2009 when we’ll finally be rid of this horrible excuse for a president and get a sane person running the exectutive branch.

I believe they are both dangerous psychopaths. But the obvious answer is to impeach Cheney, too. The Plame outing according the book caused Bush to “Hit the roof”. Naturally he then helped cover Cheney nontheless. That treasonous alone, put aside the underlying manipulation and falisifying of intelligence, should be enough to throw them both out. Congress alone gets to decide what constitutes a “high crime or misdemeanor”.
That even Rove didn’t want that slime Cheney as V.P. is telling

Yeh, imagine, thats what it took to control the country. Less people died and fled Iraq in 20 years than 4 years of a badly planned ‘Freedom Operation’

The Seattle PI has unearthed remarks Vice President Dick Cheney made in August 1992 as Defense Secretary — 18 months after the first Iraqi War. Speaking before an audience in Seattle, Cheney responded to a question by saying: “And the question in my mind is how many additional American casualties is Saddam worth? And the answer is not very damned many. So I think we got it right… and we were not going to go get bogged down in the problems of trying to take over and govern Iraq.”

    “Bush cries a lot”

    Oh, boo-hoo and bullshit.

If he cried one single tear for each and every life he’s taken or ruined by his arrogant, imperialistic, wrong-headed, mis-guided, greedy actions. then the entire state of Texas would be under ten feet of water.

  118. Marie Says:

The Chinese military hacked into a Pentagon computer network in June in the most successful cyber attack on the US defence department, say American officials.

    Comment by Arminius

Some must care for ill family members, and so can’t go out and “have fun.” It doesn’t mean we’re “alone” in the least, just stuck at home for various reasons. How about all those trolls? The same thing can be said for them.

  120. Marie Says:

Trolls can’t fathom that not everyone lives a privileged life. Some people have to work today. Some people have family needs that keep them home today. Some people don’t have $$ to spend on anything more than a walk or a short trip to somewhere “free.” Some people are using this “holiday” to catch up on domestic chores that cannot fit into a week wherein they have to work 50 hours just to stay employed.
Just like the Bushies of the world, they just can’t grasp the concept that not everyone is like them.

  121. katy Says:

oh, i think they grasp it, marie… but they have that attitude of contempt… “other people” made “bad choices”… “other people” should have gotten themselves a better life and it’s their own fault for not having it… you’ve heard all their lines…
    dispicable…
    .

  122. Marie Says:

    Katy,
I wish someone would give them swift kick in their smug fat asses.

They think they are so perfect, their shit don’t stink!!
Yes, they are repulsive individuals who think they have the solution to everything and anyone who doesn’t live “right” has bad luck.

I used to be able to talk to Republicans and agree to disagree — but today, they are the most unfriendly, unreasonable, self-righteous, SOBs that I can barely bring myself to be civil to them.
    Their sanctimonious self-righteousness is unbearable.
But they go to church on Sunday, so they must be blessed.

  123. circusfifthfloor Says:

“Ah, look at all the lonely people.” Many, most people of this planet live lives of quiet desparation. That’s not because they don’t measure up to the Christian Right’s model. It’ just a cruel world made worse by those who have all the answers, clean garments, and trophy wives. To what lengths will the trolls go to make a bankrupted point?

  124. ipod Says:

jake - you ignored me three times on a thread yesterday when i asked you some questions - please answer this one - am i on your ignore list? - if so then i will cease asking you questions…..or maybe the answers were too difficult to cook up???

Bush hopes to make a lot of cash delivering speeches after his presidency is over… while running a “fantastic Freedom Institute”

ha!! - i thought speeches requires the speaker to string together a series of coherent sentences - he’s setting himself up for yet another failure

  126. bozo Says:

    Goodies from Mr. P:

No, that’s not what I said at all. The Right isn’t pandering to various minorities, as the Left is, telling them lies in order to get votes. That is what this thread is about.

You and I both know those Muslims don’t stand a chance, yet the Left lies right to their face!

    Despicable………
