Undercutting Bush’s claims of success in Anbar.»

Today, President Bush held the Anbar province up as an example of his escalation’s success and justification for why the troop buildup should not be cut short:

In Anbar you’re seeing firsthand the dramatic differences that can come when the Iraqis are more secure. … You see Sunnis who once fought side by side with al-Qaida against coalition troops now fighting side by side with coalition troops against al-Qaida.

But as the AP points out, “In truth, the progress in Anbar was initiated by the Iraqis themselves, a point Gates himself made, saying the Sunni tribes decided to fight and retake control from al-Qaida many months before Bush decided to send an extra 4,000 Marines to Anbar as part of his troop buildup.”

UPDATE: “Though Mr. Bush never left the confines of the air base on his six-hour visit, he declared: ‘I have come here today to see with our own eyes the remarkable changes that are taking place in Anbar Province.’”

Boy, the Left is in full panic mode these days. They see the military situation in Iraq changing dramatically for the better and the concomitant polls showing increased American public optimism about the war and the thought that America might actually succeed in Iraq fills them with dismay.

But at least this posting shows that TP and its devotees are FINALLY admitting that we are fighting Al Qaeda over there. For the longest time, they have been denying that.

  14. TPandprogsareeasytodisprove! Says:

The progtarded zombies (who refuse to have an independent thought in their head, choosing instead to subserviently parrot the BS the AP and TP feed them) are in need of severe education and disabusing. For one, ANYTHING the AP fabricates in its totally slanted opinion pieces disguised as news is not credible; this is because the AP, like TP, is rooting for a US loss and a win for terrorists. Secondly, all the progtards here who seriously believed the TP spin of “undercutting” Bush’s claim of success in Anbar SHOULD’VE READ THE LINKED ARTICLE. In it, Gates is quoted as saying “that it was the presence of the additional U.S. forces - the Marines that came in - that helped cement the gains they felt they had made but were at risk.” So, pathologically deceptive Toilet Paper hate-site is mortified again for doctoring the true conception of Gates’ meaning via their omission to mention this Gates quote! Without the US military, Iraqis in Anbar wouldn’t have had the morale to take on Al-Qaeda.

  15. Troll Hater Says:

Yeah. Amazing, huh? So Robert vFisk was right all along - it wasn’t the Lybians at all, but most probably a retaliation of the PFLP-GC for the downing of an Iranian Airbus by Robocruiser, aka. USS Vincennes. Punk ship.

But admitting that would have made for a huffy Iran, blowing chances for Gulf War I.

  21. Exley Says:

#19 … Nice catch. A blatantly dishonest and misleading posting by TP. They don’t expect anyone to read the actual article. Instead, they distort (and let’s face it, lie about) what the article actully says and then hope nobody notices….Nice job catching them in their dishonesty.

“We have seen the fruit of that effort become more apparent in the last few months,” Gates said. In their meeting with Bush here, the local Sunni sheiks were explicit, however, he added, “that it was the presence of the additional U.S. forces - the Marines that came in - that helped cement the gains they felt they had made but were at risk.”

  22. steed Says:

Robert Burns himself busts TP’s twisted version of what was happening in Anbar as recently as April. The tribal Sunnis were “cooperating” while the US forces were clearing AQ extremists and holding secured areas well before surge reinforcements arrived.

Robert Burns reports April 9, 2007
    http://www.washingtonpost.com/ wp-dyn/ content/ article/ 2007/ 04/ 09/ AR2007040900775.html
“The new cooperation has enabled U.S. forces in recent months to clear extremist elements from even the most violent areas, including Ramadi, and to put more Iraqi forces on the streets, Conway was told. Cooperation by the sheiks also has quickly created a Sunni police force in areas where none existed before.”

TP marginalize the pre-surge 25,000 Marines that were engaging and killing AQ terrorists with the help of the Anbar Sunnis, claims Marines weren’t there. This is just another viscious TP smear against the US military. Yet they say they support the troops. Lying about the efforts of our military is stange way to show you support.

  23. Exley Says:

    Badger,

I understand what you are saying, but Al Qaeda is by far the perpetrators of the deadliest attacks against Iraqi civilains (just as they perpetrated the deadliest attack on U.S. citizens ever nearly six years ago)…So, of course, it is great that the Sunnis have finally realized the deal with the devil they made when they allied themselves with Al Qaeda….But as the AP article reports (and TP dishonestly omitted) those Sunnis also say the successes they have had against Al Qaeda can only be sustained with the help of the U.S.

That is not an argument for a Harry Reid-like surrender. It is an argument to continue the effort to destroy Al Qaeda in Iraq.

  24. Badger Says:

Exley..the truth is that the el Anbar Shieks, who had been attacking american troops for years, wanted to make a deal…and Gen. Petraeus was smart enough to take it. The tragedy , is the four years before a general with some common sense and not ideology took control.
The success against al Qaeda in al Anbar will not translate well to other parts of Iraq…like Basra and Kirkuk…that’s a problem.

  25. Exley Says:

That’s because “extremist elements” and “police forces” are clearly separate
and both agree to wear clothes with differing colors. Honest.

    Badger,

Why would you say that? Anbar province was considered one of the most difficult and “unwinnable” areas in Iraq. We know see that is not true. To paraphrase a certain song, if we can make it there, we can make it anywhere in Iraq — including Basra and Kirkuk.

And I join with you in wishing we had empoyed the successful tactics of today much, much earlier. But again, that is not an argument for surrendering just as we are finally getting the counterinsurgency strategy and tactics right over there.

Exley, Anbar is not a microcosm of Iraq. The area is almost entirely Sunni Arab now, with virtually all of the Shi’a and Kurds having fled. It’s tribal, and one of the major tribes broke with Al’qaedi in Iraq (which is not Al’qaedi, incidentally) and began fighting on the side of the US because they were fed up with the fundamentalists.

In other words, there are no ethnic conflicts to speak of in the region and the success is not so much a success of the US military effort as a failure of Al’qaedi in Iraq’s effort.

“The Iraqis made it happen for themselves. Then we sent more troops in.”

Well, that’s not exactly 100% correct, dlet. As Steed points out, back in April, Burns was reporting that the Sunni Iraqis disgust with Al Qaeda’s savagery was causing them to cooperate more and more with the U.S. military, even as the surge was just beginning.

But regardless, the Iraqis turning against Al Qaeda is a good thing. The ultimate goal is to have the Iraqis do their own fighting. That has always been the goal. So, having Sunnis turning against Al Qaeda is an encouraging development towards achievement of one of our keys goals.

But, as today’s AP story makes clear, while the Sunni Iraqis may be turning against Al Qaeda, they cannot as yet sustain their gains against the terrorists without U.S. military support.

    Exley”

  49. jd Says:

Let’s get serious already or get out.

If this war is worth it, we should do it right. Not lean on an unlucky minority who happen to be in the military now. This is not what soldiers sign up for. In addition to the nearly 4000 US soldiers dead and counting (let’s stop hiding the coffins already), lack of proper medical facilities and treatment for the wounded, unaddressed combat stress, suicide problems, and lack of proper gear and equipment, the downtime off also is being squeezed to a bare minimum to enable the government to send our soldiers off for redeployment before they’ve had adequate rest. Our military is so desperate that people in their 40s and 50s have been called up for Guard Duty, multiple times no less. The situation is so bad that military recruiters have to resort to mercenary bonuses and still miss the numbers - some people are fighting for money, not for our country. The whole situation is so messed up. So rarely has so much been asked of so few.

So if we are serious about this war, we should do now what we should have done from the getgo. Fight it with enough troops. The original plan was for half a million. Going from 130,000 to a 180,000 surge just isn’t going to turn this thing. And it will needlessly break our soldiers’ backs in the process.

Get enough troops in there with a clear plan they can execute. Or get out. Stop pussyfooting around with our military. I don’t care whether it’s foreign countries who we should have got to go along with us in the first place (though it seems unlikely they will step into this situation now that our Fox Republican government has cheerled us into the current mess), or whether it’s a draft. Let’s do this thing the straight and honest way if it’s really worth doing. Maybe we need a permanent base there as the President really wants, even though he denied this for the longest time. Whatever the reason. Let the President lay it out.

Or let’s get out. Every day we stay more people die and we just delay the inevitable chaos when we leave anyway. Get the other countries in the Middle East to the table. Give them the timetable for our withdrawal. And let them start to work it out.

  50. Bobwurst Says:

I agree with you that Anbar is not a microcasm of Iraq. Its predominantly Sunni orientation mades it one of the most difficult areas to secure and an area most likely to provide safe haven to Al Qaeda, which is as you know a Sunni group.

Basra and Kirkuk, with their large Shiitte and Kurdish populations (respectively) make it far less likely that Al Qaeda can operate with impunity there and far more likely the local populace will cooperate with U.S. and Iraqi national government forces against Sunni-dominated Al Qaeda.

Please be accurate. Al Qaeda is not in Iraq. The terrorists calling themselves “Al Qaeda in Iraq” are only loosely affiliated with OBL.

But to suggest that the goal has always been to have the Iraqis do their own fighting is absurd. Who were they supposed to be fighting, Exley? They were supposed to be greeting our troops with flowers, and cheerfully accepting whichever benign despot we imposed on them.

What do you think will happen if the tribes currently aligned with the US see our troops there for years? Do you seriously think they’re going to accept that?

It’s taken all this time to get to a stage where, maybe, the least populated, least-fractional province in Iraq has tilted toward a military success IF US troops stay there indefinitely. How can you spin this as a success for all of Iraq, or any real step toward ending the occupation?

Basra and Kirkuk, with their large Shiitte and Kurdish populations (respectively) make it far less likely that Al Qaeda can operate with impunity there and far more likely the local populace will cooperate with U.S. and Iraqi national government forces against Sunni-dominated Al Qaeda.

    Comment by Exley — September 3, 2007 @ 7:48 pm

This is where your obsession with the notion of “Al Qaeda” screws up your understanding of Iraq. Al Qaeda in Iraq is a small, if vicious, minority of the insurgency, and their resistance to the American occupation is only a small part of the conflict in the region.

According to the latest stories coming from this administration, the people attacking US troops, for example, are using Iranian-manufactured weapons. Either this is not true, or the people using them are Shi’a, not Sunni. And the conflict between Sunni and Shi’a is what is going to be the issue outside of Anbar and Kurdistan.

I would certainly expect so….The good thing is the once Al Qaeda is out of Iraq, the U.S. will be out too. So it behooves both of us to work together to get Al Qaeda out ASAP.

“Our enemy is Al Qaeda..that’s why it was such an enormous mistake to attack secular Iraq.”

We agree that our enemy is Al Qaeda. And it may indeed have been a mistake to invade Saddam Hussein’s Iraq. But the fact is that Al Qaeda followed us there and are there now. And we need to fight them and defeat them in Iraq as much as we need to do the same in Afghanistan/Pakistan.

Wal-mart habitually manufactures reasons to fire people before they can accrue enough time to merit cos-of-living raises. They also hire many employees at part-time, and keep them under 40 hours a week, so they don’t have to pay for their insurance.

Looks like the military is following the same playbook in regards to umbra (assuming, of course, that his claim of service rendered is on the level).
