Breaking: Sen. Craig reconsidering his intention to resign.

Last week, Sen. Larry Craig (R-ID) announced, “It is with sadness and deep regret that I announce that it is my intent to resign from the Senate, effective Sept. 30.” Apparently, he is now reconsidering. MSNBC’s Dan Abrams reports that the man who said “he would resign to avoid becoming a distraction is now once again a distraction.” Sidney Smith, Craig’s spokesman, said, “It’s not such a foregone conclusion anymore, that the only thing he could do was resign.” Watch it:

UPDATE: The AP reported today, “Pennsylvania Sen. Arlen Specter, senior Republican on the Senate Judiciary Committee, suggested Craig’s GOP colleagues who pressured him last week to resign should re-examine the facts surrounding his arrest June 11. ‘The more people take a look at the situation, there may well be second thoughts,’ Specter, a former prosecutor, said Tuesday.”

  7. Toss these losers Says:

What? Did he just watch the replay of Spector's weekend interview or something?

Senator Craig, you're not going to make Mitch McConnell's Christmas card list with behavior like that.

  8. Samsara Says:

This guy is twisted. He said during his resignation that it was his intent to resign. Clear the airwaves for Bush's Iraq visit and then change your mind. Amazing.

  9. Jay Randal Says:

Larry Craig is a certified perverted nut. He is completely crazy.

  13. troqua Says:

He's rethinking his guilty plea. He's rethinking his resignation.

Resolute! Frankly, I'm all for it. Larry will be a great symbol for the GOP through 2008.

what does mr. president hate the ACLU?

    is it the

  15. mongo Says:

"Why isn’t the ACLU taking on this case of obvious entrapment?!

    Comment by Mr. President"

What "case"?!?!? The guy didn't even consult a lawyer before he pled guilty.

This is not a situation where some indigent client got railroaded by an over-zealous prosecutor.

A senator with access to whoever he needed to speak to, with sufficient money to retain whatever lawyers he needed, decided he didn't even want the facts to come out (so to speak) in a public trial, so he pled guilty thinking it would go away.

If he had bothered to talk to a lawyer about it, he would have immediately learned of the downside of that course of action.

    Now, what--he wants a "do-over"??

  16. goofus Says:

Bizarre. It's possible that Craig is threatening the party in order to shake down jobs or other perks for himself or his staff. He's too radioactive to stay in office, but until the minute his resignation takes effect, he's got power over the Repub party. Sounds like he's using it for all it's worth.

  17. HAHAHAHAHAHA Says:

Who picks up toilet paper from a public restroom floor? (other than the custodian?)

"Oh those dirty bird litter bugs, what shall we do"

    HAHAHAHAHHA

You gotta be kidding me, it's people like Craig, and the trolls who make me user those paper seat liners!

  18. delphi Says:

Craig will have a lot of support if he changes his mind.

    Specter was right and courageous.

Craig, while he is at it, ought to give the Repugs a big FU and become an indepedent .

Same for warner, collins and others.

  19. mongo Says:

    Give 'em hell, larry!

    Stick to your guns!

Take your case to the court of public opinion---some more!

Demand to be heard at the republic party national convention! Don't let the democrats try to take advantage!

Keep this story alive! Don't worry, you're career is *not* over!

Nothing's over till you say it is! Was it over when the germans bombed pearl harbor?

  20. troqua Says:

Such an open and shut case of entrapment. Why on earth would a LEGISLATOR who makes LAWS plead guilty to such a thing?

  21. Mr. President Says:

    Mongo and A.Political:

Mark Foley did not have an even-arguable case of entrapment.

  23. joe Says:

I am reconsidering my decision to stop pointing at him and laughing.

    Hey, Senator Craig! *Ha ha!*

  24. troqua Says:

When the charges are thrown out, this will bite the Dems on the ass for making such a big deal about it.

    Comment by Len — September 4, 2007 @ 9:29 pm

Except they didn't. It was only Republicans who threw Craig under the bus.

  25. Jim Source Says:

    Y E S ! !

Just when things were getting boring again, God intervenes - and Arlen Specter is his messenger. Who knew?

Think of the photo ops: clearing brush with the president down in Crawford; testifying before the EPA about mold build-up under bathroom stall dividers; introducing a constitutional amendment to mandate more leg room in public facilities.

You keep fighting, Larry. Don't you let them push you around. You are the future of the GOP. Take matters into your own hands! Don't go down without a fight! We're behind you 100 percent. You can lick 'em. You can show the world what you've got. Be strong, be proud, walk tall, sit wide.

  26. Fred Says:

"When the charges are thrown out, this will bite the Dems on the ass for making such a big deal about it."

You WOULD like to bite me in the ass! Leno will ride this train true of false for ever. Tere were never any charges against foley either but you darn well know he'd still be a laughing stock and the reason for the fall of the page program if he were still lurking about!

  27. Connie Manes Says:

What better way is there to HELP keep IRAQ off the news stations the next two weeks? Have them talk about Larry Craig's case instead.

I'm betting Senator Craig has threatened the Bush Admin saying he will vote WITH the Dems on Iraq if he is forced to resign.

    Simple.

    http://www.freewebs.com/coonsey/

  28. ann Says:

"Why isn’t the ACLU taking on this case of obvious entrapment?!"

Entrapment? Who forced Craig into the restroom? Who forced his foot to tap-tap-tap and his hand to swipe a message that he'd like a little action? No one. Craig made the decision to seek. No one entrapped him.

  29. Joefriday Says:

As a United States Senator Craig surely had access to the first class lounge and would also be a frequent flier with first class lounge privileges. Why was he out in the public restrooms. Just asking.

  30. mystery guest Says:

Let Craig stay;this is the Rethuglicans worse nightmare!

  31. troqua Says:

Should I stay or should I go now?
Should I stay or should I go now?
If I go there will be trouble
An’ if I stay it will be double
So come on and let me know!

    Stay, Larry, stay!

  32. Smack Says:

So... What was all the foot tapping and hand waving in the bathroom stall about, Larry?

  33. mongo Says:

"The ACLU should take up the case of Larry Craig. He was falsely accused.

    Comment by Gary — September 4, 2007 @ 9:27 pm"

    You're dam right!

This is just the kind of case the aclu looks for! A US senator accused of lewd conduct, who pleads guilty to a less embarrassing offense to avoid public scrutiny, without even seeking legal advice.

The aclu: fighting the good fight!

  34. chimpeach Says:

    #6 Mr. President

Why isn’t the ACLU taking on this case of obvious entrapment?!

You have to pick one or the other. Either he did nothing wrong or it was entrapment. You can't claim entrapment if you didn't do anything wrong.

But, when you switch your defensive tactics halfway through the questioning, you've admitted your guilt.

  35. Samsara Says:

Hanity and Combes just had some guy on that has taped testimony of some guy Craig propositioned. The Idaho Statesman played it for Craig and his wife. He apologized to her after hearing it. Look for that tape to be out soon. Sean got his ass handed to him. He was speechless by the end. Thanks Senator.

  36. Jeffrey Stewart Says:

The republican strategy must be to keep Democrats laughing so hard that they can't go and vote!

  37. troqua Says:

chimpeach, right. Entrapment is a tricky defense. It means you did what they accused you of, but they caught you in an illegal way.

  38. Your Conscience Says:

Hey Lentard, remember when Republicans had scruples, morals, believed in small government, and fiscal responsibility?

Me either.......seven years seems likea lifetime ago.

  41. CaptainVideo Says:

Go Craig! Drag this out. The longer this goes on the longer this story stays in the news and reminds people what a total bunch of hypocricy the Repblicans' prattle about family values is. All the Republicans' baloney about family values is a ploy to con lower income voters to vote against their economic self interest by voting for the party of the rich.

    Comment by Len — September 4, 2007 @ 9:29 pm"

    Thrown out?!?!

This case is done. He was accused and plead guilty. Finis.

He can choose not to resign, but barring a new set of facts the case is closed. And craig didn't dispute the facts, which is what happens when you plead guilty.

If he had a dispute with the facts, he should have gone to trial; otherwise you are considered to be agreeing with the state's version. What an idiot.

He could always try to go to the Court of Public Opinion, but he's already been convicted there.

  45. troqua Says:

entrapment is a legal defense by which a defendant may argue that he or she should not be held criminally liable for actions which broke the law, because he/she was induced (or entrapped) by the police to commit those acts.

In other words, if he's going to claim entrapment, he has to admit he did the deed.

  51. CaptainVideo Says:

"The ACLU should really step in here. This is disgraceful. This is entrapment."

Not so because Craig started the sequence by tapping his foot. The only thing the cop did was respond to Craig's overture by moving his feet. It was Craig who reached under the divider to touch the cop's shoe and with his hand.

If the cop had begun the sequence by tapping his foot, that would have been entrapment.

  52. kip Says:

so the truth comes out--are all you republicans gay rights activists?!? or maybe just closet cases?

sorry, i have no sympathy for this old queen. he's a hypocrit, a pervert, and a disgrace to his office.

  53. Harry Says:

I'm guilty. No, I'm not. But I resign anyway. Wait, no I don't.

He has a chance to open up and disavow himself of the bigotry and hypocrisy, share the pain of being closeted, stay in Congress, and run for re-election. He seems to be waffling the opportunity away.

  54. Jay Randal Says:

LOL you GOPer trolls are pathetic. Only fellow creeps would defend a pervert like Craig. Do you fools all expose yourselves in restrooms too?

  55. jb Says:

Is this how the GOP supports the troops? Tapping foot in stall....so patriotic.

  56. Mr. President Says:

According to the lawyers, Craig will have to take his chances (which are pretty good) whether a jury of his peers has ever heard of this elaborate tap-dancing ritual prior to this case . . .

  57. CaptainVideo Says:

"“When the charges are thrown out, this will bite the Dems on the ass for making such a big deal about it."

It was the Republicans who threw him under the bus. They were the ones who insisted he resign. The Democrats said relatively little. This was the smart thing to do. One should not get in the way when the Republicans are self-destructing.

  58. troqua Says:

And suddenly conservatives are calling for the ACLU. My world really is turning upside down.

  59. Mr. President Says:

Thank God that Craig, at least, had the political sense to consistently deny being gay.

Zooey, it's 9:53 PM, do you know which stall your senator is in?

  66. Mr. President Says:

I was just joking about the ACLU. We already have Skadden and Arps LLP on a very big retainer.

  67. chimpeach Says:

"Once again, we've found people in Washington have not lived up to the level of respect and dignity that we would expect for somebody that gets elected to a position of high influence ... He's no longer associated with my campaign, as you can imagine."
    - Mitt Romney

“Senator Larry Craig made a difficult decision, but the right one. It is my hope he will be remembered not for this, but for his three decades of dedicated public service ... I think the episode is over. We’ll have a new senator from Idaho sometime in the next month or so and we’re going to move on.’’
    - Mitch McConnell

"Sen. Craig made the right decision for himself, his family, his constituents, and the United States Senate. After the president heard the news he called Sen. Craig and he said he knew it was a difficult decision and wished him well."
    - White House spokesman Scott Stanzel

Okay, trolls. Do you really think he's going to be welcomed back by the GOP?

  68. bilbogaggins Says:

"Why isn’t the ACLU taking on this case of obvious entrapment?!
    Comment by Mr. President "

So Mr. Pee, how is it entrapment. All the cop did was watch what Craig did until such time as he ascertained that Craig was trying to hit on him. Is it entrapment because the cop was in the bathroom?

Don't you love it how the Rethugs embrace the ACLU when they want to get one of their own out of the pickle they got themselves into.

I say Go Craig. Rescind your resignation. Continue to be a distraction and a lightening rod for the Rethugs.

  69. Keith Says:

MSNBC just said one of his lawyers will be the one Michael Vick just had. No joke.

"When the charges are thrown out, this will bite the Dems on the ass for making such a big deal about it.

    Comment by Len — September 4, 2007 @ 9:29 pm"

As others have also pointed out, it's actually the republicans that have made a big deal about it, given that they (also) believe craig is gay.

Unlike democrats, they just happen to hate gays.

  71. CaptainVideo Says:

I have a great suggestion for Craig. Enter the race for the Republican presidential nomination. Then in all the debates he can assert "I am not Gay!" :-)

  72. had enough Says:

Maybe there is not much of a case here, but he did plead guilty .. because of many previous rumors,.. to make this all go away, so maybe the masses would not hear about it. It is a sad day when one is so closeted, and full of self hatred of his orientation that he must find bathroom sex. One with this behavior should not be represented US.
Isn't this the decade of lying closeted perverts?

  76. dbadass Says:

This makes the Republicans look bad. Therefore the Democrats win.

    Comment by CaptainVideo — September 4, 2007 @ 9:50 pm

  77. ann Says:

"He had to take a shit."

Omigosh. Haven't you read the reports that he didn't flush?

  78. jb Says:

Craig is scum because of his blind obedience to the corrupt, greedy and traitorous GOP. Desperate behavior in a toilet is the least of his sins.

  79. Mr. President Says:

Well, until proven otherwise, I take Craig at his word: "I am NOT gay!" If he was gay, I'd throw him under the bus myself.

  80. Jay Randal Says:

Mike Rogers, of BlogActive, was on Hannity & Colmes tonight. He outed Larry Craig last October as cruising public restrooms for sex acts with other men. He has audio tape of a 40 year old Republican staffer who met Craig at the Union Station mensroom in DC. He said they both exposed their genitalia and gave each other blow jobs. If Craig tries to fight his lewd conduct charge, then events such as this will come out.

  81. Mr. President Says:

  88. Keith Says:

In 1982 Craig gave a preemptive denial of any implication into the scandal of congressmen and underage pages, sex, cocaine, hashish, and marijuana:

What a circus freak this man is...

  103. Starve-A-Bush_Feed-A-Beaver Says:

I believe that if Craig tries to reopen the case and withdraw the guilty plea, he becomes subject to the more serious charge and faces prison time if found guilty. It should become an interesting trial. I wouldn't be surprised if the prosecutor subpoenaed Craig's hard drive from his computers to see if he's been spending time on gay websites that mention the particular bathroom where the arrest occurred. That would be relevant evidence. Supposedly, it's a well-known meeting place for anonymous sex. And Craig might be cross-examined on why he went to that particular bathroom in the airport, when restrooms closer to the waiting room for his flight were available.

"Insurrection"? You win tonight's prize for "Most Retarded Troll". Congratulations. I'm sure the award has hurt mr Pee, unless, of course, you're just another one of his sockpuppets.

Better luck next time, Mr Pee. You know you're always in the front of the herd when the voting starts.

  116. Mr. President Says:

Just because you're paranoid, gummitch, doesn't mean we aren't all out to get you.

  117. Jay Randal Says:

veritas > Craig refuses to go away quietly. He wants the charge dropped, but instead if he is allowed to withdrawal his guilty plea, then he will have to stand trial and evidence of his prior bathroom activity can be presented against him.

  118. Mr. President Says:

    Nice try, BARTLEBEE.

Well, until proven otherwise, I take Craig at his word: “I am NOT gay!” If he was gay, I’d throw him under the bus myself.

    Comment by Mr. President — September 4, 2007 @ 9:57 pm

Here we see the willful denial, followed by the resort to violence if that becomes untenable.

    Gee, haven't seen that before.

    Ouch, Frank J.

  126. Mr. President Says:

  127. Dave C Says:

Ha ha ha. He's better get to work and get that guilty plea looked into. He must have been entrapped to agree that he was guilty. Ha ha ha. Maybe the ACLU can help him to understand why he did that. And it was the Reps that kept cramming him under the bus so this doesn't get any better... if he stays under the bus no one can blame the Dems, they just say there & laughed... if he gets out it just looks bad for the Reps that they can't decide if they're in favor of gay trysts in washrooms or against them. Ha ha ha, this story just gets better with age. This guy is supposedly fit to govern???

You're right Jill honey, they have nutthin except for the support of 57% of the people in this country. The last poll had 57% voting for ANY Democrat and 35% voting for ANY Republican. They also have the truth on their side and the public has finally seen what liars and hypocrites the Rethugs are. I would love to see you the day after the election in 2008 when your brain implodes.

  133. chimpeach Says:

    #106 Mr. President

Did the policeman who followed Craig into the restroom know about these rumors?

Nice lie. Read the transcript again, clueless. The cop was already in the men's room when Craig came in. That's how Craig was able to peek in to the stall that the cop was already sitting in. The cop was there, because too many other perverts like Craig had been using that restroom for things other than the intended purpose and people were complaining. Craig was just another in a long line of closeted gays who wanted to have an anonymous encounter with another man in a public restroom. If Craig weren't so ashamed and so pressured by his fellow GOP hypocrites to hide his homosexuality, he might be in a healthy, long term relationship rather than sneaking around behind his "wife's" back. His marriage is a sham. His self-righteous blather is, too. Just like yours.

  134. darla Says:

specter could be right, and there is also the claim that craig was discriminated against.

men make passes at women ALL THE TIME, and suffer almost no consequences for it, especially in public contexts.

but when gay males do it, it's a serious crime.

    why is this?

    Comment by Larry — September 4, 2007 @ 10:52 pm

Right, because never before in the history of mankind had anyone ever thought of a joint effort to publish political ideas.

ThinkProgress, for example, does not have several contributors, and the constitution of the United States was written by just one man.

Your idea was so unique and original, it must have been stolen.

    Comment by chimpeach — September 4, 2007 @ 11:35 pm

That part of the story is well-known and Craig hasn't challenged it.

Mr. P. is desperately trying to find a way that he can cling on to his self-imposed delusion that Craig was framed.

You know, it must've been a liberal police officer, or something.

Poor saps. Both Craig and Mr. P. They are in deep denial.

  139. chimpeach Says:

    #190 darla

but when gay males do it, it’s a serious crime.

    why is this?

If heterosexual couples are having sex in the stalls, the cops are going to bust them. If heterosexual males go into women's restrooms and hit on women there, the cops will bust them. If gay men want to hit on each other in a gay bar or even a straight bar, they're not going to get busted.

Are you starting to see a pattern? It has something to do with the fact that it's a restroom and there's an expectation of a certain degree of privacy for those wanting to use it as a restroom. Add to that the lewd behavior aspect of people having sex in a public place in the presence of those who don't wish to see it.

  140. Gregor Samsa Says:

The more people take a look at the situation, there may well be second thoughts

Translation: It may take some time, but we might just be able to find a way to talk fast enough to spin Craig out of this this mess.

How many straight people hang out in public restrooms hoping for anonymous sex???? You mean like the AMT faked out tax increase of Bush? Or the fact that the Two Bushes and RayGun together are responsible for over 70% of the national debt incurred since the founding of the nation? Or are you talking about the mismanagement of the economy, the recession and the coming housing collapse brought on by republican incompetence? Or maybe it's the crumbling infrastructure from 30+ years of republican cheapout?

Sorry, but the PRICE of the GOP is much higher than any taxes, and unlike dumbass b!tches like you, the American people know this!

  146. The Oracle Says:

Republican Sen. Craig didn't hire an attorney. He pled guilty on his own, to a lesser charge, after working out a "plea deal" with local authorities, apparently trying to keep his suspect restroom activities hidden from everyone...including his wife and family.

Idiot doesn't even begin to describe Republican Sen. Craig. Flip-flopping hypocrit? But for Arlen Specter to state that some "revisionist" facts about Craig's suspect restroom activities will somehow exonerate Craig leads me to believe that Arlen Specter should no longer be in the U.S. Senate either.

  161. Chocolate Jesus Says:

Nope, that would make him a scumbag AND a hipocrite. He should make his beleifs known and advocate for them, then he woudlnt be in office long. Problem solved. People should be honest about who they are and what they support. If he publicly advocated for pedophile rights, at least people would know this, and he woudnt last long.
