Thompson: ‘The Whole’ Middle East ‘Will Become Nuclearized’ If We Redeploy From Iraq

Former Sen. Fred Thompson has regularly fearmongered about terrorist threats. In June, he warned that undocumented immigration could lead to “suitcase bombs” from Cuba and alleged that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid’s (D-NV) call to redeploy from Iraq was “encouraging our enemies.

Taking his fearmongering to new heights, yesterday on Hannity and Colmes, Thompson claimed that withdrawal from Iraq would lead to “the whole” Middle East going “nuclear”:

If we leave [Iraq] under bad circumstances, we’re going to have a haven down there for terrorists. The whole area, I’m afraid, will become nuclearized. The Sunni countries are looking at what Iran is doing. And if we can’t help with stability in that part of the world, they’re going to help themselves, and they’re going to go nuclear.

Watch it:

[flv http://video.thinkprogress.org/2007/09/thompsonnukes1.320.240.flv]

Thompson added al Qaeda was actively seeking nuclear weapons as reason to stay in Iraq. “We have al Qaeda out there we know trying to get nuclear weapons,” he claimed. “We have 40 countries that have fissile material that could make a bomb.”

Thompson’s fearmongering is reminiscent of the Bush administration’s pre-war attempts to conflate weapons of mass destruction, Saddam Hussein, and al Qaeda into one. In his State of the Union address in 2003, two months prior to the invasion, President Bush declared:

Evidence from intelligence sources, secret communications, and statements by people now in custody reveal that Saddam Hussein aids and protects terrorists, including members of al Qaeda. Secretly, and without fingerprints, he could provide one of his hidden weapons to terrorists, or help them develop their own.

In reality, al Qaeda never chased the nuclear weapons that Hussein didn’t have. The U.S. presence in Iraq is fueling al Qaeda’s growth, not preventing it.

Digg It!

The responses on this thread by the anti-national security progtards are proof positive that progressives are dangerous to the well-being of the US. What Thompson said didn't make him a genius--it merely confirmed what intelligent, aware and engaged Americans already know, that pulling out of Iraq will destabilize the ME even further. The fact that progtards here don't exercise intellectual honesty and admit to the truth in Thompson's observation really confirms how radicalized and extreme the ideology of progressives is. Progtards still drink their ideological kool-aid by denying that a premature pullout from Iraq will cause the region to become nuclearized. The progtards are so mentally ill (like Savage observes) that they assume a US pullout will equal: automatic harmony between different branches of Islam, an Iran which will stop its nuclear buildup (because the US presence "fueld" Iran's nuke ambitions), and immediate stopping of the civilian slaughter in Iraq!

We've destroyed a country that had nothing to do with 9/11 (you remember, the reason we invaded Iraq to start with?), killed untold thousands of innocent people and probably created thousands of new terrorists where there were none before. Why? For oil and greed.

Try to think for a change. I know it's difficult when you're fed a line of crap a minute, but give it a shot.

  25. Tobey Tall Says:

WE COULD HAVE HAD A NUCLEAR WEAPONS FREE WORLD IF NOT FOR BUSH

In 2005, Mohamed ElBaradei was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his outstanding work in the international control of nuclear weapons. In 2003, ElBaradei had proposed a verifiable ban on the production of weapons-grade fissile material – a positive move that would severely limit the proliferation of nuclear weapons.

In a vote of the Disarmament Committee of the United Nations (UN), one and only one nation voted against ElBaradei's proposal – George Bush's America. In that same vote, Israel abstained, apparently fearing international interference with their own outlaw nuclear weapons program, and Britain abstained in an act of diplomatic fealty to the "special relationship" between Tony Blair and George Bush. The final tally was 147 nations to one with the two abstentions. In a later vote of the entire UN General Assembly, Israel and Britain abstained, while America and Palau voted against ElBaradei's verifiable ban on fission, and 179 nations voted in favor of his proposal. The final vote on that occasion was 179 in favor, two opposed (U.S. and Palau), and two abstentions (Israel and Britain).

ElBaradei's proposal would monitor all nuclear fission and guarantee that non-nuclear weapons states would be able to obtain adequate supplies for their nonmilitary usage of enriched plutonium.

One nation has publicly accepted ElBaradei's proposal: Iran.

    .

  27. Chris L Says:

How does the US determine who is allowed to have nuclear weapons? Pakistan has nukes, but that's OK, because we are "allies". But their sworn enemy is India, and we give them nukes. We have to make sure Iran doesn't get nukes, because we are worried about Israel. But Israel already has nukes, so those Iranian nukes would be meaningless.

But they don't have the delusional idea that they are suited to be leader of the free world (even tho some of them are infinitely more qualified.)

The Proglibs are the only Americans we fear. The republicans have let us have our way in every situation (I miss Don Rumsfeld), and if the Liberals win the next elections, we here in the oil-lands will be in real trouble, knowing that they will get right to work on alternative fuels, thereby taking away our only bagaining chip. what are we going to do, sell sand? This is no good the progressives are a danger to the survival of Al Qaeda, and we really need another tool like Fred Thompson in office to keep our power growing and our boots on the nuts of American politicians on the Right. If America pulls out of Iraq, where will we train our warriors? Without the criminally inept leadership of our buddy George Bush, we'll get our asses kicked out of Iraq in weeks, and we'll be hounded and chased throughout the Middle East! This is so unfair. The GOP have let us be, and let us grow, and we need them! Don't let us down, you brave 25%ers, we rely on your lockstep ignorance and cowardice for our very survival! it's only because of you Bush supporters that we have been able to gain such momentum, please, please elect another shill like Fred!

If you live near a prison where a convicted murderer has recently escaped, and your local news says he may be in your neighborhood, that is a true threat. Fearmongering is when your local news service says that if you don't lock your doors at night, every rapist, child molester, murderer out there will be roaming your streets, and it's all your fault!

In his 1994 Senate campaign, Thompson parked his expensive luxury car a few blocks from each campaign event. He then changed into blue jeans and had one of his staffer's drive him the last few blocks in an old pick-up truck so that he could pull up to the event and have people think he was a common man of the people. Kind of reminds you of George Bush living in a gated private community next to a golf course before he got into the Texas Governor's mansion and then buying a phoney ranch with no cattle (former pig farm) in Texas with fake false-front buildings in 2000 so that he could act like a pretend cowboy and common man of the people. Both Bonzo and Fred are actors living in phoney scripted worlds but they're not very good actors.

You obviously have no problem with having Michael Savage put words in your mouth. I do.

The Sunni countries are looking at what Iran is doing. And if we can’t help with stability in that part of the world, they’re going to help themselves, and they’re going to go nuclear."

Can anyone name ONE Sunni country that will get nuclear wepons if we leave Iraq?

Didn't realize that invading an country on trumped up WMD and terrorism charges was being responsive. Nice use of the "Republican Talking Points Lexicon" oddly enough many of the moderates and swing voters aren't so sure about the ability of the republicans to adequately protect this country. They already dropped the ball to the tune of 3,000 dead, and made it worse with an ill advised invasion. I think you are hoping people will vote on that one issue, even though the republicans are largely not in control of that issue any more.

#146 regarding the chilbot comment the answer to deliver is obvious. The only people I heard after 911 saying that we deserved it were the right wing religious nuts and their denizens who said that it was god lifting his protection from the US because we have accepted such bad things in our society such as homosexuals. Those are the people who truly hate the US more than anyone, the religious right who hate the fact that we have rights and freedoms here. They want the rights curtailed and the freedoms limited, which seems to fit in nicely with what they say AQ wants to do to us. What chilbot may be thinking of are those who discussed where US policy may have gone wrong in its application causing people to hate us. After all why would anyone hate a country that imposes it's will upon the world? We do it for their own good (and lately for our god, because after all he really is ours...right?)

Right - that's my take on it. He probably was referring to those people, and I consider myself one. I link the 9/11 attacks directly to the blowback from nearly than 50 years of Middle East meddling, starting with Operation Ajax in 1953. that's what you'd do, if you had any love for your country. But we know where you're at, we know your pathology, we know you're incapable of loving your country, we know that George Bush and the other traitors that have stolen our government have you mesmerized and use you as convenient, disposable propaganda mouthpieces. and here you call us spoiled and pampered, while your Republican puppetmasters vacation at one of 10 homes, and ride in private jets and limousines, and must have handpicked audiences so they won't be asked any embarrassing questions by the rabble. None of that happens with the liberal side, so, you see, you're just projecting again, your only strength. Porjection is all you have; every foolish utterance criticizing the left fits you and the right like a glove. I believe that the U.S. deserved the 9/11 attacks in the same way Dr. Frankenstein deserved his tragic fate.

    Comment by toasterhead — September 4, 2007 @ 4:27 pm"

Exactly. But the f*cktards on the rioght will NEVER grasp this or acknowledge it as being a key factor in why the Iranian revolution occurred, and the ignition of radical political islam occurred, which animates salafi islamic movements which manifest themselves in al Qaeda, which, BTW, we indirectly funded and helped establish in conjunction with the Pakistania ISI in the mid 80s.

9/1 was blowback from extremists we created and then responded to by attacking on of the secular muslim nations that was viewed as an enemy by those same extremists and have destroyed our standing in the world as a result while wrecking havoc in the region, and providing the biggest recruitment tool to the very terrorists we all want to see eliminated.

  274. Cazzie Russell Says:

mighty aphrodite, your myspace page is proof enough that you have served, and that you're young enough that your service came during a time of war. ditto your husband, so whether or not you opt for another go-round, fair is fair: thank you and your hubby for serving our country during wartime. that said, i couldn't disagree more about our being in iraq. wrong country, wrong time, and in the wake of this war are exponentially more legions of enemies willing to give their lives to take ours. had we pumped the cake we've sunk on this war into alternate energy research, we'd be on the road to mitigating the peak oil dilemma, whose role in the matter is well-documented.
