Audience boos Brownback’s proposal to ban gay marriage.

At the Fox News GOP presidential debate tonight, correspondent Carl Cameron asked a New Hampshire woman whether she wanted gay marriage banned. Her answer — “Absolutely not” — received cheers from the audience. When Sen. Sam Brownback (R-KS) then said he believes the nation should have a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage, the audience loudly booed. Watch it:

Digg It!

Transcript:

HUME: Let’s check in once again down at Young’s Restaurant with Carl Cameron. Carl.

CAMERON: Hi, Brit. Well, in this country, any discussion of family values now has sort of gone into what constitutes a marriage — a man and a man, a man and a woman, gay marriage. A lot of conservatives would like to see a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage, and we have a chance here to talk to Heidi Cherkot (sp?) of Dover, a state employee of Health and Human Services — social worker.

What do you think? Should there be a constitutional amendment banning gay marriage?

HEIDI: Absolutely not. We’re the state of “live free or die” and people should be able to marry the person they love.

CAMERON: Okay, so let’s take that question from Heidi Cherkot (sp?). And there you hear the reaction from Granite staters — the “live free or die” state — and pose this to Sam Brownback. Sen. Brownback, should there be a constitutional amendment banning marriage, and if so, why?

BROWNBACK: Answer to that is yes. And the reason is, this is a foundational institution. It is a foundational institution. I understand this is a divided audience on this.

    Who? Brownsomebody? Who?

Ohhhhh, THAT Brownback, the guy who is so far into the third tier that he makes Kucinich feel good about his own chances.

You might as well have used the headline, “The local hardware guy proposes to ban gay marriage”, it would have carried as much weight.

A gay person has the right to marry another gay person. It’s an individual right.
That’s how you convenes people to go along with “allowing” gay marriage. Rights belong to individual not one group of people.

  5. Zit Juice---Spread on Toast for a Real Treat says:

Oh my, did Brownback threaten to invade Pakistan or something?

Really? Did you just decide that? On what basis?

As usual, the professional and irredeemable fraudsters at TP refuse to tell the whole truth. The NH audience of RINOs did boo Brownback when he called for a ban on queer marriage, but that’s only because NH Repubs still slant much too libtardedly. You wouldn’t get this impudent reaction from a southern red state. Nonetheless, contrary to TP’s plot to make Brownback look “rejected,” Brownback did follow up immediately with a statement where he slammed gay marriage because of its deleterious effect on marriage rates as statistically proven in European countries. He also went on to stress that ONLY a mom and a dad could raise a kid in the most favorable way. This got just as loud applause from the questionable, NH audience, but TP’s too chicken to admit this! MORE IMPORTANT is the cheering the NH audience gave to Chris Wallace when he asked Ron “libtarded RINO” Paul why he wants to let Al-Qaeda dictate US foreign policy.

  14. Cugel says:

As usual, the professional and irredeemable fraudsters at TP refuse to tell the whole truth. Blah, blah, blah! Rant, wheeze, grimance!”

57% is 57%. “Same rights as traditional marriages” = “same rights as traditional marriages.”

Maybe a majority of the wing-nuts in attendance at a Republican debate wouldn’t support equal rights, but a majority of Americans do. Period.

And even quite a few Republicans now hold this position, whatever raving idiots on the far right, like RonPaulisaLIBTARDCLOWN, might think.

So TP is quite right. The right-wing is totally losing the debate on this point, to the extend that there’s even a debate.

In ten years the “debate” over gay marriage rights will have about as much relevance as debating whether we “ought to give NEGROES the same rights as WHITES.”

There was a point in the 60’s and early 70’s when “debating” the civil rights movement had some relevancy to the right-wing Republican base, but not even the far right bothers to talk about undoing the civil rights laws and refusing to allow blacks to vote today.

That ship sailed a long time ago and it’s too late for the fascists among us to do anything about it. Same thing is happening with gay rights. The far right ass-clowns might not like it but they’re going to have to learn to live with it.

    Comment by RonPaulisaLIBTARDEDCLOWN — September 5, 2007 @ 10:31 pm

No, you wouldn’t get this reaction from a red state, because those poor retards wouldn’t have a clue as to what lies Brownback was telling, he used to many 2-syllable words.

By Nov. ‘08, there wil be no red states, and America will be free to be great again. It’s just wonderful that a (R)etarded moron like this would encourage the government to deny rights that everyone else has to gays, but fight like hell against paying his fair share of taxes to be able to slam them here. Every post of bigotry, cowardice and ignorance by the right moves them further away from the 70+% of Americans who understand and value freedom, and closer to historical levels of irrelevance. Thanks, TP, for allowing these losers to show their true colors so we can fight them more effectively.

Why are the RIGHTS of GAYS, PEDOPHILES, BESTIALS, TRANSEXUALS, POLYGAMISTS, and INCESTS,,, always pushed upon this population by JUDGES?

Why are the JUDGES who interpret THESE rights basing it upon the CIVIL RIGHTS ACT of 1965,,, when in 1965 NONE of these RIGHTS were recognized by the CONGRESS that SUPPOSSEDLY passed them?

Why did it take 40 some odd years for JUDGES to (the congress of 1965 sure did not recognize) recognize GAY RIGHTS in this ACT,,, and at the same time CHANGE other laws those same congressmen had made,,, Sodomy, Marriage, Adoption….

If as TP claims 57% are for HOMOSEXUAL MARRIAGE why don’t they now follow the PROPER course of LAWS in this country and pass it in CONGRESS? Why still go to the JUDGES who INTERPRET what THEY want?

Why won’t other RIGHTS polygamy, incest, pedophilia, bestiality etc…. also be acknowledged in the same manner as the GAY RIGHTS?

Should YOU care how the RIGHTS are made,,, as long as the group you support is on the JUDICIAL winning side?

  17. LibTeenie says:

Thats right! Because if the left cant win with popular support they will simply legislate everything into existence and tell us its for our own good. Just relax and accept it.

About time that the government told us what is best for us and made all the decisions. I cant wait for Edwards to become POTUS so we can all have our regular medical check-ups enforced by bayonet.

Hey, nobody’s shot you yet, so obviously we’re all living with RIGHTARDS we don’t approve of. Your pride in your bigotry and ignorance marks you as one of those hill folk that Deliverance was based on, so really, go back to making it with your goats, but don’t do it in the open, because that’s still illegal. As far as the rest of your list goes, pedophiles, bestiality, polygamy and incest, take it up with your GOP, they’re the ones doing all that stuff, and getting away with it. You’re wasting your time yelling about it here, we don’t support any of that. Gay marriage, however, is another thing entirely, and you’ll find that we civilized people support it because it harms nobody, and it’s not really any of our business, or yours. And as far as judges are concerned, all you’re really saying is that you don’t believe in the Constitution or American law and custom, so why should anyone listen to a word you have to say? You’re not an American, you have no say on this subject. Therefore, gays will attain the rights we all have, and sooner than later. This is a liberal country, that’s what keeps us strong and free. The only time we are weak and in danger is when conservatives steal the government, like right now, when China could destroy us justby shutting off the money. That’s what the GOP has brought us; danger from terrorists, danger from China and Russia, danger from within. Gays marrying are not a danger, not even to ignorant bigots like you.

I do approve of the process, as well as the process of judicial review that correctly strikes down “Defense of Marriage” hate legislation.

See, a functioning democracy needs all three branches in order to function. The legislative and executive branches are subject to the political whims of the many interest groups that manipulate public opinion.

Without judicial review, we’d still have segregated schools, interracial marriages would be banned, housing discrimination would be legal, arrested suspects would not be guaranteed a lawyer or even be notified of their rights at the time of their arrest, prior restraint would be legal, and the government could arrest and imprison you for speaking against it.

Is that the type of country you’d rather live in?

How is the CIVIL RIGHTS ACT of 1965 related to GAY RIGHTS when nothing was done FOR gay rights when they passed it? How can judicial REVIEW interpret that?
How come when they passed this act in 1965 they did not also change SODOMY? They had HOMOSEXUALS back then you know….

“Gay Marriage”, here we go again….

In my opinion, this issue does not even belong in the Presidential debate. It should be decided at the State level!

Moreover, is it possible for those who support “Gay Marriage” rights, to not label those of us who do not support “Gay Marriage” rights as bigots and homophobes! Quite frankly, it’s tiresome, naive, and presumptuous!

It’s how we feel, and we have that right! Just as those of you who do not support the “War in Iraq” as being labeled UnPatriotic! It’s how you feel, and you have that right!

In addition, and I’ve posted in enough forums to come to this simple realization, that people who post in these forums are very opinionated and head strong and it makes it extremely difficult to persuade one to your point of view! If you’re lucky, maybe you can come to a compromise!

In closing, I would just like to add that I feel there are far more pressing and life threatening issues facing us right now. And the “Gay Marriage” rights, in my opinion is not one of them….

And to finally play off of what the flamboyant James Carville so rightly put it during President Clintons re-election campaign back in 1996, “It’s the Economy Stupid”, well, in the next election it’s going to be “the Iraq War/War on Terror” stupid…

NO silly,,, A judge will recognize YOU as an oppressed MINORITY under the CIVIL RIGHTS ACT of 1965 (like gays). Then you can enjoy PISSING on others at will,,,, AND as a bonus you can change other LAWS as well. Whatever a JUDGE claims your MINORITY group is…

  160. Jackie says:

Senator Craig will now vote for gay rights as he’s seen first hand how people are treated. The hate his GOP party shows has been shown to him and they stabbed him in the back after 27 years of loyalty. If he is or isn’t gay he was treated like trash by his own party. Senator Specter came out to support him later but not one of his so called friends would speak up for him. I noticed Vitter had the hold gang of GOP supporting him with his actions of paying for prostitutes over many years. Now we see that if a Senator is gay it’s a crime but if he pays for prostitutes or threatens peoples lives or even has an open affair like the President and Connie Rice there’s no problem.

Next you get the PSYCHIATRISTS to change your behaivor from mentally unbalanced to balanced (this will be backed up with studies that have a predetermined result). Don’t forget to claim that you are BORN THAT WAY and cannot change. Finally, concentrate on a JUDGE who may have a CLOSET pissing habit himself and go for GOLD BABY….

    Comment by darla — September 6, 2007 @ 12:46 am

didn’t sound that way to me. and the cheers for the previous woman were quite clear. America has had enough of the bigotry and hate of the right wing and the fascists in the White House. The constant harrassment from the pulpits of bigoted, backwards churches, the constant hate from the wingnut politicians, teh drone of the fat, lazy, moronic, lying talk show hosts like Rush the Pedophile and O’Reilly the phone pervert are starting to backfire, and America turns to the light, little by little, but strongly and steadily. The anti-gay-marriage numbers are soft, and will change very shortly, as liberals take back their country. Pedophiles will then be hunted down, prosecuted and jailed, not protected by the Republican Speaker Of The House.

The religious bigots do come out against gay marriage by 57%, in those polls, but that number is shrinking quickly. #228 – “The religious bigots do come out against gay marriage by 57%, in those polls, but that number is shrinking quickly.” Comment by ronjazz — September 6, 2007 @ 8:35 am

Ronjazz, you’ve hit the nail on the head: opposition to same-sex partnerships is waning and support is waxing!

Could you imagine what the results of this poll would be had it been taken 20 years ago? Probably 90% against and 5% for, with 5% undecided. MAYBE.

I say give it 10 years, maybe 20, and same-sex marriage will be legalized in the US as is proper and right.

There have been many references to studies that claim that same-sex marriage impats heterosexual marriage, but that’s only when you cherry-pick the reports and ignore their full findings. Marriage is not affected in any negative manner by same-sex marriages or partnerships at all.

There has not been one single logical argument against acknowledging same-sex partnerships that stood up under scrutiny. Not one.

  246. Democrat Soldier says:

The truth will set you free, but first it’s going to really tick you off! (Well, only if you’re an anti-gay bigot. . .)

“They examine how same-sex marriage came to be in Scandinavia; who is getting married and why they are tying the knot; the Church’s reception to same-sex unions; and how same-sex marriage has affected the couples, their families, their children, and their greater communities, both nationally and internationally, and find that the defense of marriage argument is inconsistent with the Scandinavian evidence. What Spedale and Eskridge find is that marriage in the Nordic countries has in no way suffered from legalization of same-sex unions; if anything, it has benefited. If we look at the proof from abroad, the authors argue, we must conclude that the sanctioning of gay marriage in the United States would neither undermine marriage as an institution, nor harm the well-being of our nation’s children.”

  247. Troll says:

You all forget that the people of NH have strong libertarian leanings. The reaction to Brownbacks proposal stems not from support of gay marriage but in large part from opposition to the federal gov usurping the power that many believe belongs to the states.

I do not support the federal gov recognizing ANY marriage it is a religious institution that the fed gov has no business being involved in. (You know progs, seperation of church and state.) Government has a role to play in providing support to couples raising children, in those cases the legal CONTRACT refered to as civil unions could legitimately be recognized to establish legal rights of parents for the benefit of the child.

Only so long as the Republicans are steering the US into their version of “morality”. ;-)

Sorry, dem, immorality knows no ideology. And the continued decline is inevitable. It can be slowed by not allowing gay marriage, but nothing will stop it. ;)

I agree with you. Despite the fact that the majority of morality-scandals are hitting the Republicans, the Dem’s are far from perfect. I just recall all the “returning honor to the WH” statements by the Republicans, and now they’re finding out their not quite so “pure” as they portrayed themselves.

“It can be slowed by not allowing gay marriage…”

Well, everyone has their chance to be wrong, and I won’t disturb your chance at it right now. I will look forward to you waking up to your mistake at some point. Good luck with all that!

So you think the moral decline will continue unabated even if gay marriage recognition is delayed a little while longer? The end result is the same whether it’s delayed a little or not. ;)

  257. Democrat Soldier says:

#240 – No, moral decline will only continue as long as the anti-Constitution policies of the Bush Administration continue unabated.

Gay marriage does not contribute to the decline of morality, it’s the lack of morals by those who claim to have them that causes moral decline. Now, lets get the hypocritical congressmen (on both sides) out before they do even more damage than they already have!

If “gay marriage” does not contribute to the decline of morality, then I suppose you’d happily give me four real five-dollar bills for a counterfeit twenty dollar bill.

After all, it wouldn’t be hurting any one, and you could probably spend it. Why is it that the government gets so antsy when someone tries to print their own money? Shouldn’t everyone be allow to print their own money? (Believe the U.S. Constitution does have something to say about this.)

But what’s the problem here? The problem here is in faith in the government to have a fair means of exchange.

So what’s the problem with two homosexuals “marrying?” It undermines or marriage. It undermines the faith that marriage is vital to the nation.

It makes the society less valuable, less worth preserving.

Anyone here want to sign up to be in the Army to protect the country that allows two men to be “married?”

This issue has the potential to be a nation breaker.

That’s the moral damage that “gay marriage” causes. It’s not really a marriage. It can’t really be a marriage. Only a man and a woman can enter into a marriage – the Biblical “one flesh” relationship. Same-same gender couples can only enter into perversion, which is detrimental to everyone, even the participants.

…, it’s the lack of morals by those who claim to have them that causes moral decline.

This impresses me as being really close to “wrong is right” and “right is wrong.” Wonder if this what the poster intended.

Now, lets get the hypocritical congressmen (on both sides) out before they do even more damage than they already have!

Since this remark is in the same paragraph with the remark on “homosexual marriage,” I take it to mean that we should allow “homosexual marriage” because there are hypocritical congressmen. These two are in no way related, but count on it, when homosexuality is being discussed on the INet, someone will make sure that the everyone else knows the whole world is tainted.

Fact: Gay marriage is a counterfeit.

What’s the saying about “lipstick on a pig”?
You put lipstick on a pig, it’s still a pig”

Wise words well written but will not be understood by many here.

What if a bi-sexual wants to marry a man and a woman he/she loves?
Shouldn’t he/she have “equal protection under the law”?

  260. Democrat Soldier says:

Let me repeat the sentence that seems to always be overlooked by the right-whiners:

“If we look at the proof from abroad, the authors argue, we must conclude that the sanctioning of gay marriage in the United States would neither undermine marriage as an institution, nor harm the well-being of our nation’s children.”

By the way, bitbit, why don’t YOU trade ME 5 honest dollar bills for a fake 5 dollar bill. That’s what we all got in the US when Pres. Bush, who was a failure at everything he ever did in his life, was granted the Presidency by a COURT DECISION!

Why the right-whiners didn’t want the VOTE to decide is beyond me. Oh, I know why: they would have lost!

As a married man (to a woman) I can’t see how in the world if any other two people will disrespect my marriage. People are people and the world is made up of very different cultures. If it does not interfer with me or threaten me I think people should do what they want without interference from the government or other people.
Anyone who feels threatened by two people of the same sex being married probably doesn’t have a very good marriage to begin with.

I think the GOP is really on its way out of existence. The membership is trending older and older, self-identification is way down, and this Gay Marriage thing fits right in; the older, uber-right “values” candidates are not reflecting what one might call, oh… “the reality on the ground”.

After all the damage Bush has done, I think there’s at least an outside chance that a new party will emerge, and absorb the small government crowd, while the “values” people go back to the fringes.

  267. charle says:

i just read this stuff today. so i’ll just run down the list. read your bible. the isrealites were pedophiles, castrated men allegedly sing in heavenly choirs.some of god’s example people written about in the bible had sex with their daughters. Isrealites were incestuous.(often marrying cousins ‘to keep the family lineage pure for jesus’s arrival’). solomon boned 1000’s of hoes. God treated Job like dirt, even though he didn’t do anything wrong….etc…etc. my opinion on gay marriage is that it is not a counterfeit 20$ bill. it does not look like one and it does not function as one. Marriage is a value, something cherished between the participants. religion has nothing to do with it. all religions were made up by man so that mankind can bond together into gangs and aquire a more safe and comfortable lifestyle. The only reason most people think their religion is right is because they were taught that. If you don’t indoctrinate and brainwash an infant he will not have a religion until something convinces him otherwise(propaganda and fear mongers) and lastly… its been over 2000 years people……HE’S dead…. move on and grow

  271. LesbianWithALuger says:

Someone here asked if “you would like tobe forced to have to give rights to people you don’t approve of?”

I already do… they’re called Bigoted Reich Wing Nutjobs… But, hey… it’s suposed to be a free country right? So I support your right to be an asshole.

I find it odd that people here think that liberals and libertarians want to make rules to tell others how to live. Under the current conservative laws in my state, my Church can’t even call my marriage what it is. A legal marraige performed in another country! How is that not an infringement of separation of church and state?

No one is telling you that YOU have to marry someone of the same sex… NOR are they telling your church to do it. What they ARE saying is that I can’t and my church can’t. That’s not really free now is it?

Conservatives have taken away more rights from people and have imposed more government involvement in personal matters than ANY libertarian EVER would.

As for comparing my marriage to pedophiles, beastiality, etc…. that’s just ignorance. It’s really you that worries me… I am in a loving and committed relatinoship with another consenting adult and the first place your mind goes is to goat snogging and innappropriate touching of kids? I think YOU are the one with some real problems if that’s the first thing you think of. Methinks Thou Dost Protest Too Much!

And why shouldn’t my marriage be recognized? It’s the only contract that we both can legally sign… just not with eachother? That dosen’t make sense. It’s the *only* legal contract limited by sex. It’s also the only contract that no states have to honor if it’s from another state.

Heck… in my state they won’t marry 16-year-olds (nor should they)… but if I went to a state that would and I were 16 (straight) and married my high school sweetheart… well… my state would have to recognize it. They would recognize a marriage they wouldn’t preform AND it’s even between 2 people who aren’t even old enough to possibly begin to comprehend what a marriage is… nor are they old enough to sign a contract without their parents approving it!

As to Brownback’s “more children are born out of wedlock since redefining marriage”… there is no causal relationship between the two. You could also say that since Denmark has allowed marriage between same-sex couples, internet usage has gone up. The gay couples had NOTHING to do with internet usage.

Also… how can you REDEFINE something that has been defined in SOOOOO many way throughout history and cultures? Limiting marriage to only one man and one woman would be redefining it. that type of marriage is anything but traditional. Sure, it’s the norm now (in this country)… but it hasn’t always been that way throughout history. (How many wives did Abraham have again?)

Also, I can assure you that my having sex with my wife (same-sex as myself) did not, in any way, contribute to the number of children born out of wedlock.

However… we are planning on having children… since our marriage isn’t recognized, would THAT be considered a child born out of wedlock?

Shouldn’t we be fostering loving and healthy relatinoships? Aren’t there enough unhappy people out there and children without good and safe homes?

Why is it that I VALUE FAMILY but YOU don’t value MY family? How is it that you feel that you have a right to say what’s a family and what’s not? Many people grow up with a mom and a dad in very abusive homes and can hardly be called a family… some kids just have a mom and they are called a family… some kids just a dad or a grandma and they are called a family… some people don’t even have kids (or want them) and they are called a family… they count and my family doesn’t?

I think that many of the people going around shouting “family values” don’t understand that gay people have family values just as much as straight people… and that they need to stop shoulting “family values” unless they are going to value families.

Great comments by LesbianWithALuger! I think you really make the most important points in all this.

The Republican party, once the party of non-interferance of government has now done a 180. They would like to legislate the ‘persuit of happiness’ out of anyone’s life that doesn’t march in lockstep with them.

The crude, bigotted and malicious comments of many of those who are against gay rights is quite sobering. It seems that they use religuos prejudice as the basis for denying the humanity of gay people (and their own fear of people different than themselves). I would remind those Americans that ‘freedom of religion’ includes freedom from religion. Don’t use the biases of your adaptation of religion to deny rights to other Americans.

Live Free or Die is indeed a great American sentiment. Let us not impede the rights of others in their persuit of a better, happier and freer life. And let us not let our own narrow mindedness and ill founded prejudices define our attitudes towards our fellow citizens.

  273. angry_diane says:

Why in every conversation about homosexual rights, the nuts bring up pedophiles, bestiality, incest, and polygamists…geez, there is a difference – gays do not choose to be gay – the rest of them its a consciouos choice.

And why is this site so jammed with angry right-wing-nuts? If what is expressed on this website does not conform with what you think is right, THEN GO SOMEWHERE ELSE!!!

God, what a bunch of petty, prejudiced righties…….go stick your head back up george and dick’s assess…..

Exactly what part of “ALL men are created” equal didn’t you ignorant know-nothings get?

If I didn’t know better, I’d think you read it as “ALL white, land-owning, sexually repressed, heterosexual males” are created equal — everyone else is a second class servant who exists only to serve the more-equals.

    God forgive us all.
