Upset Over GAO’s Findings On Iraq, Lawmaker Attacks Agencies’ Qualifications To Issue Report

Now that the GAO has reported that there is little to no progress in Iraq and that the administration may be cooking the books on levels of violence, conservatives are desperately trying to attack the agency’s credibility.

Today at a House International Relations Committee hearing, ranking member Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL) attempted to claim that the GAO was unqualified to even render a judgment on the situation in Iraq. Describing the process of accountability as “unsettling,” Ros-Lehtinen complained, “I just feel uncomfortable listening to a report by the Government Accountability Office about a war effort.”

GAO Comptroller General David Walker responded by defending the agency’s experience in such matters. He explained the work the GAO does is based on “looking at hard data, interviewing qualified individuals, and appropriate parties have an opportunity to review and comment on our work.” Walker added that military experience is not a necessary requirement to offer a qualified opinion:

The President and the Vice President have no military or foreign policy experience. Does that mean I don’t respect their opinion? I do. They’ve got a lot of people who work for them that do. So I think it’s a false claim to say you know we’re not qualified to do this work. We’re eminently qualified to do this work.

Later, Walker added, “For the record, It’s my understanding that Secretary of Defense Gates does not have any military experience either. So frankly, I think we need to stick with the facts.” Watch it:

[flv http://video.thinkprogress.org/2007/09/Walker_Roz.320.240.flv]

Ros-Lehtinen has had no problem citing the work of the GAO in a letter to Secretary of Homeland Security Michael Chertoff or enlisting the GAO’s resources to pursue her agenda. It’s only when she doesn’t like the agencies’ conclusions that she finds fault with the work of the office.

Does the stupid a** GOP even realize what they are doing? Can’t they realize they are all goose-stepping to a dunce-a-thon called the BUSH/CHENEY administration. Also, why can’t they be honest and admit they do not have a clue about justice in governance, they only know how to push the FAKE conservative, close minded, WASPISH, out of the south, intolerant, psuedo christian, damn the poor even if I am one of them, HYPOCRITICAL, divisive, anti-choice, lie when it suits us, war-mongering agenda set in motion by Dick “I’m not a crook Nixon”.

They would be better served by sticking to the OLD GOP tennants of smaller government and fiscal responsibility with a libertarian social slant. You could then see the strengths of America reveal themselves instead of the snivelling, scared of terrorist, self-centered, scared of Latins, despised by our former friends and allies, can’t admit failure, hysterical funk we now find ourselves in. GOP politics is like a bad country club that only admits Kool-Aid drinkers and then only a certain flavor. Hannity, O’Lielly and their ilk reinforce this everyday.

Lets install a strong man in Iraq and get the F out. They will NEVER be a friendly DEMOCRACY to us. They would (demorcratically) vote to screw us BIG if they could, thanks to DUMBYA. RANT /off

Ileana Ros Lehtenin is like a mosquito. She buzzes your ears till you think you’re going crazy; she is an unreasonable person who NEVER sees the other’s side, only her own agenda. When her opponents speak she does the equivalent of sticking her fingers in her ears while yelling, la, la, la. I have seen this woman many times and she is extremely obnoxious.
Of course she would object to the GAO report – this one doesn’t fit her needs. She wants only agreement with her own views.
Walker has made it perfectly clear to anyone who would listen that the military is expert at military work — they are not expert at everything else that was included in the GAO report, in fact, far from it.

True enough, veritas, but the problem in our country really lies with the right-wing authoritarian-types who refuse to believe that our government leaders would ever deliberately deceive us. So they believe whatever the president says simply because he says it, not because he backs up what he says with facts and evidence. (Oh, those you can’t be allowed see because they’re “secret”. And they accept this explanation, too. That and “It’s for the good of our country.”)

I think there’s a very strong case to be made for bush and Cheney having achieved a first: a collective loss of foreign policy experience while in the White House. They had none to begin with, and now have moved into the negative. Everything they’ve attempted has failed miserably and violently, has cost trillions of dollars and thousands of lives, our reputation and honor, and we are now the laughingstock of the world. and i’s not so much the lack of military experience that’s the problem with them; it’s their refusal to understand that thier lack of military experience is expected, and that the military experts around them can advise them properly. This advice has been ignored, and the advisors fired, retired or transferred. I don’t see anyone but a pair of proven sociopaths like George and Dick behaving that irresponsibly, and it will be up to us to make sure that we are never again saddled with their ilk. No more GOP presidents.

Right wing blogs don’t seem to do too well. Probably because they’re so restrictive and ban most liberal commenters. Ann Coulters is private and membership is subject to her approval. Guess Ann can’t handle defending her outrageous ignorance when Chris Matthews isn’t there to mediate for her.

But even when they do have more open ones, they just don’t thrive.

It seems right wingers only thrive in left wing blogs where they can badger everyone, and make fools of themselves trying to interrupt the discussions, and just make a general nuisance of themselves.

When they find themselves in a room full of likeminded people however, they seem to have nothing to say.

They should stick to failed government regulation.

Then maybe Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL) is as dissatisfied with the assessments made by her Republican colleagues that spend 15 minutes in the Green Zone or prance around a market place guarded by hundreds of marines. She’s enough to give dimwitted politicians with their feet in their mouths a bad name. Who votes for these twits?

Right now Bush is trying to hold the Republicans behind the surge, because gawd forbid they succumb to pressure in an election year and embarass him by putting some kind of limit on his abililty to fill body bags. Hence surrogates like Ari Fleischer are dispatched to produce ads shaming Republicans into supporting Bush’s pet war, and the number one target (dollar-wise) was Arlen Specter’s back yard — to the tune of nearly a million and a half dollars.

lost or dropped nukes You think that’s bad?

Here’s a website with a list of lost or accidentally dropped nukes.

SEPT 14, AIR FORCE FIGHTERS & BOMBERS WILL STAND DOWN

    Date: Wednesday, 5 September 2007,
Posted by Geneticus at Surfing The Apocalypse:

SEPT 14, AIR FORCE FIGHTERS & BOMBERS WILL STAND DOWN

    NUKE “ACCIDENTALLY” FLOWN ON BOMBERS

First of all, in retrospect, how stupid would anyone have to be to accidentally load nukes onto planes from alarmed and secure bunkers, totally against regulations, at the risk of being shot dead on the spot? They don’t even ship live nukes on airplanes because of the risk of crash. Those are usually shipped by truck with armed guards with full-auto M-16’s and armored suburbans in caravan, not on public roads, definitely never by air. I doubt anyone could’ve possible gained access to those nukes without tons and tons of written permission, failsafe backups, security measures like biometrics, etc. I’m saying that this must be a set up so they can have an excuse to stand down our air defenses.

AIR FORCE FIGHTERS AND BOMBERS TO STAND DOWN FOR REVIEW OF PROCEEDURES

So as a result of nukes being flown around, the air force will ground our fighters and bombers to review procedures. Just like 9/11/01, the Air Force is standing down their fighters and bombers. Just like 9/11/01, we will be defenseless at the request of our leadership. Let’s hope that 9/14/07 is not just like 9/11/01.

I know Florida has some great people there, just that there seem to be an inordinate amount of wacky women there (I forgot to include ann coultergeist in that list).

Actually, my daughter went to the U of Miami on a soccer scholarship so I spent a bit of time there before she transferred back west.

And Bush being from Texas is a “whole other story”!

  129. bilbogaggins says:

“Later, Walker added, “For the record, It’s my understanding that Secretary of Defense Gates does not have any military experience either. So frankly, I think we need to stick with the facts.”

Facts, we don’t want any of them pesky facts. We prefer propaganda, thank you very much.

Any time he does not like what someone says, he either shuts their office down, or if it is out side of the MISS administration’s control, they go into character assassination mode.

  133. SquarePeg says:

I’m surprised she has taken time from her rants about Castro to be interested in anything else.

Maybe Castro wrote the GAO report and that’s my she just can’t accept it.
