Asked to assess the chances that escalation would succeed, Rep. Chris Shays (R-CT) said last week, “[I]f you ask me now, I think it is one out of four.” But yesterday on the PBS Newshour, Shays underwent a major conversion. “The surge is working,” he said. “It’s a huge success!“
But if you ask for the definition of success…
September 5th, 2007 at 3:49 pmOh dear…I appear to have escalated so hard that I have surged my pants.
September 5th, 2007 at 3:52 pmShays is one worthless rubberneck who is responsible for this unnecessary clusterf$ck in Iraq.
September 5th, 2007 at 3:53 pmShays said last week, “If you ask me now..One in four ” A few days later: “It’s a success!” Next week:”We won!!” The only thing “escalating” for the BushCultists is the rhetoric.
September 5th, 2007 at 3:57 pmIs it just me, or do they always refuse to quantify exactly how progress is being made? If I want to say that the surge is failing, I back it up by pointing to specific criteria – ie. political upheaval, sectarian violence, ethnic cleansing, troop deaths, timetables and goals not met, etc. But when people claim “the surge is working”, they just leave it at that. How is the surge working?
September 5th, 2007 at 4:03 pmApparently in Connecticut, 25% is all you need to achieve to be “a huge success!” Fuzzy math, anyone? Or is this just another repuppy-can who was against the surge before he was for it?
September 5th, 2007 at 4:05 pmOnly in America.
Those who have been wrong a 100% of the time in 100% of their predictions about what will happen next retain the maximum credibility in predictions about how the future will unfold in this sordid affair.
All those who have been proved right about everything thus far don’t even get to see a “news” microphone much less an actual camera.
Is this a GREAT country or what?!
September 5th, 2007 at 4:06 pmThe price we pay for a moron President and a criminal political party.
September 5th, 2007 at 4:07 pmRight. 3 out of 17 benchmarks met = “huge success.” I call bu77shit!
September 5th, 2007 at 4:07 pmWhen are politicians going to realize that virtually everything they say in public is being recorded? They can’t get away with speaking out of both sides of their mouth anymore. As it appears to be turning out, The People are “Big Brother”. We are watching and listening. Now all we need is a fair election process.

September 5th, 2007 at 4:24 pmNo one can define success in Iraq.. while this results in millions of deaths and disabilities, the looting of our treasury while corporations reap the wealth, continue to grow…maybe completely take over some day?…..
No one can define success in Iraq.

Nail -> Head Exactly.
We cannot define success, because we cannot define the enemy, or the mission objectives, and without these two, there is no plausible way to define success.
September 5th, 2007 at 4:27 pm“It’s a huge success!“
another big stockholder/war profiteer speaks
God help you all when you die and see what you have done.
September 5th, 2007 at 4:33 pmIs there something in the water in Connecticut that makes the good sheeple of that state vote for TWO f@ckup Senators? WHY oh WHY do you have to stick us with both Shays and Joey L.?
Anyone?
We really do want to know.
September 5th, 2007 at 4:57 pm#13… Reminds me of the end of most of the christofascists’ beloved Chick tracts–where the self-righteous guy is faced with the Giant Jesus on the throne who declares “your name is not in the Book of Life–I know you not.” and then Bush will be dragged away protesting about how he was a good Christian. In the end he gets cast into the Lake of Fire for all eternity.
September 5th, 2007 at 4:58 pmthere is one hell of alot of arm twisting going on in the gooper party. a hell of a lot of twisting. what a disgrace.
September 5th, 2007 at 5:15 pmShays + Connecticut = Weapons Industry
September 5th, 2007 at 5:27 pmShays was close to lose his seat in last year’s elections in Connecticut. Next elections in 2008,if things remains the same, his claims of ’spectacular surge’ can come to haunt him.
September 5th, 2007 at 5:53 pmShays constituents know that he is a fraud. He is going to get a big surprise next November when he is finally defeated. I have a lot of friends in his district and they are wild with him for his continual support of this war.
Shays is a friend of the Bush family and it is more important for Shays to have his access to them than it is for him to vote the way his constituents want.
He’s the Lieberman of the House in the CT delegation.

It’s all one giant propaganda campaign. The Rethugs think that they are covered now because Betrayus is going to say they are winning so they can hide behind him. But they are going to be really surprised when they finally realize that their constituents aren’t buying it.
The election in 2008 is going to be a rout of the Republicans.
September 5th, 2007 at 7:24 pmWell, I don’t live in his district, but I loved this line from the Aug. 31st
Shays Makes Warm, Fuzzy Visit to Senior Center
Joins in Chair Exercises, Talks about War, Medicare, Social Security
By PATRICIA McCORMACK
http://origin.connpost.com/brooks/ci_6761419
….Shays also criticized presidential candidates who are trotting out an assortment of issues as they attempt to swing voters to their causes.
“I guarantee you that by Election Day, you won’t like any of the candidates,” he said. [Note: he forgot to include himself!] He related this will be because media will have spent weeks and months trashing and hauling the candidates over the coals, unearthing every little negative thing possible about each and blowing it up….”
then at the bottom, here is his Iraq talk…
Shays’ stance on drawing down troops in Iraq was in writing – contained in a copy of a 9-page letter Shays sent to Secretary of Defense Robert Gates on Aug. 23. Stacks were at the sign-in-desk for the Shays’ visit and were gobbled up by the seniors.
“Since August 2006, I have recommended we develop and negotiate with the Iraqi government a timeline for the drawdown of Coalition forces,” Shays wrote.
“The main argument against establishing a timeline, namely that it will provide the enemy with dates certain of troop withdrawals, is misleading.
“Our enemies already know we will be drawing down our forces.
“Negotiating a timeline will demonstrate we will not be in Iraq forever and that we will not be leaving Iraq precipitously. I believe it will diffuse insurgent anger over the continued presence of Coalition forces and provide Iraqi leaders a much-needed deadline to motivate them to complete actions necessary for national reconciliation.
“Drawing down our troops is inevitable.
” We have overextended our military by deploying them more often, with longer tours.
“We must face this reality and restructure our military for the long struggle against Islamic extremism.”
