Shays’ stance on drawing down troops in Iraq was in writing – contained in a copy of a 9-page letter Shays sent to Secretary of Defense Robert Gates on Aug. 23. Stacks were at the sign-in-desk for the Shays’ visit and were gobbled up by the seniors.

“Since August 2006, I have recommended we develop and negotiate with the Iraqi government a timeline for the drawdown of Coalition forces,” Shays wrote.

“The main argument against establishing a timeline, namely that it will provide the enemy with dates certain of troop withdrawals, is misleading.

“Our enemies already know we will be drawing down our forces.

“Negotiating a timeline will demonstrate we will not be in Iraq forever and that we will not be leaving Iraq precipitously. I believe it will diffuse insurgent anger over the continued presence of Coalition forces and provide Iraqi leaders a much-needed deadline to motivate them to complete actions necessary for national reconciliation.

“Drawing down our troops is inevitable.

” We have overextended our military by deploying them more often, with longer tours.

“We must face this reality and restructure our military for the long struggle against Islamic extremism.”

The election in 2008 is going to be a rout of the Republicans.

Shays is a friend of the Bush family and it is more important for Shays to have his access to them than it is for him to vote the way his constituents want.

He’s the Lieberman of the House in the CT delegation.

No one can define success in Iraq.. while this results in millions of deaths and disabilities, the looting of our treasury while corporations reap the wealth, continue to grow…maybe completely take over some day?…..

Those who have been wrong a 100% of the time in 100% of their predictions about what will happen next retain the maximum credibility in predictions about how the future will unfold in this sordid affair.

All those who have been proved right about everything thus far don’t even get to see a “news” microphone much less an actual camera.

Is this a GREAT country or what?!
