ThinkFast: September 5, 2007

howard

A recent poll finds 52 percent of Australians believe Bush is the worst U.S. president ever, primarily due to his Iraq war policy. Yesterday, Australian Prime Minister John Howard told Bush he would not reduce the 1,600 Australian forces in Iraq.

The nation’s Medicaid directors yesterday told the Bush administration that its new restrictions on the federally funded State Children’s Health Insurance Program will limit the number of children covered. In a letter to Health and Human Services Secretary Mike Leavitt, the National Association of State Medicaid Directors “said the new standards reduce flexibility, making it difficult for states to expand coverage.”

“A half-hour before his Saturday news conference announcing his plans to resign, Sen. Larry Craig left a voice mail — at a number he apparently didn’t intend to dial — stating his intent to possibly rethink the decision.” Listen to the audio here.

The Americans Against Escalation in Iraq have released a new ad calling out Bush’s suggestion that he will reduce troop levels. “Do they really mean it this time?” Watch the ad here.

By a vote of 69-24, the Senate approved Jim Nussle to replace Rob Portman as the director of the Office of Management and Budget. Budget Committee Chairman Kent Conrad (D-ND) voted against Nussle’s confirmation because he feared Republicans could portray a yes vote “as a sign of support for the president’s failed fiscal policy.”

“His speech will be noticeably slower and he’ll be zipping around in a motorized wheel chair, but Sen. Tim Johnson (D-SD) will do something on Wednesday that did not seem possible last December – he’ll give an address on the Senate floor.”

The controversial docudrama Path to 9/11 has hit a snag in its plans for a nationwide DVD release. The $40-million, five-hour ABC miniseries “is for now on the path to nowhere.” Cyrus Nowrasteh, the conservative activist who produced the series, is blaming the Hillary Clinton campaign for the stalled release.

And finally: Al Gore (No. 1) tops President Bush (No. 2) — at least in the second annual “Harvard 100″ ranking, recognizing the university’s most influential living alumni. “Interestingly enough, newly resigned Attorney General Alberto R. Gonzales finished last on the list at No. 100.”

What did we miss? Let us know in the comments section.

GORE: Of course the vice presidency is part of the executive branch! But I fear that I’m losing my objectivity where President Bush and Cheney are concerned. Not much surprises me anymore. I have a lot of friends who share the following problem with me: Our sense of outrage is so saturated that when a new outrage occurs, we have to download some existing outrage into an external hard drive in order to make room for a new outrage.

Typical “conservative” contempt for the voter. It’s funny, though, how quick they were to cite big percentages when GWB was popular. No mention then that Americans were butt-ignorant.

Because Americans are notriously ignorant of public affairs, foreign and domestic. This is nothing new. So when 70% of the population disapproves of the President, it means he’s disliked even by people who normally don’t pay attention to politics. Now THAT’s some disapproval!

BTW, Shakey, I left you a quick quiz testing your knowledge of biological warfare back on the “Bush’s advisers tell him what he wants to hear” thread.

If you feel up to it, I’d appreciate a reply. I feel the answers would be most illuminating.

Shakey, every time you try to float this turd, I’m gonna come along with my big brick of truth and sink it.

Shakey constantly states that I am on his infantile “ignore list” because I failed to answer a question. When pressed on exactly which question, the below dialog followed:

    Jake sez:

(for instance, in the tobacco thread below, TripMaster Monkey refused to answer how the outcome of that trial would have been different).

I can only assume you’re referring to this thread, Jake, since you seem unable to substantiate your claims with links.

Please point out the post where you asked me “how the outcome of that trial would have been different”.

    I’ll wait…

Now that you’re back with nothing to show, perhaps you’ll retract your false accusations…although I know better than to give you that much credit.

While we’re talking about unanswered questions, let’s talk about my question, that you so studiously ignored.

I’ll post it again, for everyone’s benefit.

Jake, explain this canard (if you’re able). How exactly will forcing White House advisors to testify under oath impair the President’s ability to receive effective advice…unless you’re including advice to commit crimes within that range.

To paraphrase the anti-privacy crowd, if the administration isn’t doing anything illegal, what exactly does it have to hide?

I look forward to your reply.

    Two things:

One: Jake ignored me at first, and then claimed to have posted a response, which was subsequently ‘disappeared’ by the TP editors. I replied that this was rather unlikely, and, even if it were true, why didn’t he simply post the answer again? After all, Jake seems to pride himself upon answering questions…he asks often enough if anyone has any for him…

Two: This post occurred on the same day as the tobacco thread Jake mentioned earlier. Since his stated reason for placing me on the “ignore list” was that I didn’t answer a question he never asked, and since I have proof that I asked him a question he subsequently deliberately evaded, it seems overwhelmingly likely that I’m actually on the “ignore list” because Jake is afraid to debate further with me. I’d be willing to wager that asking Jake questions he can’t answer, and pointing out his lies, are the only two reasons for inclusion in The List â„¢.

I hope this clears up any lingering confusion on this issue.

We now return you to your regularly scheduled thread.

To the 2 year-old who cannot manage his sums, this means the GERMAN authorities are quite capable of handling security in their country even if it concerns international installations, but obviously not you. 75 years-old I think not.

This attitude is what gets us in trouble ALL the time!

I’ll whine when confronted, and become childish, like creating an Ignore List, and falsifying my military record. I’ll create different “real names”, and fall back on my “no information is needed” crap when asked pertinent military questions.
Basically, I’ve got no life, and post here to feel good about myself. At least I’m getting attention!!!

Really, how many 70 year old veteran’s do you know have an ignore list when confronted? Most veterans know how to handle confrontations. Most chickenhawks do not! Right, Jake D. ChickenHawk?

Terrorist acts against America were happening worldwide long before Bush came on the scene, including several attacks on American soil by foreign terrorists and one home-grown terrorist, and an attack on a U.S. warship. Bush didn’t give a damn about fighting terrorists before he became president, and he didn’t give a damn about fighting them after he became president (see PDB 8/6/2000; see Cheney advised to form terrorism task force that never met; see Bush administration not having a cabinet level meeting addressing terrorism until several days prior to 9/11; see Bush sitting for 7 minutes in a classroom with a dumb look on his face as America was being attacked).

    P-I SENIOR CORRESPONDENT

ConAgra, the world’s largest supplier of the 3 billion bags of microwave popcorn sold each year, said Tuesday that it will eliminate the use of a controversial chemical butter flavoring linked to severe lung disease in workers from its Act II and Orville Redenbacher products.
    [...]

and THIS information, at the end of the story:

    HOW DIACETYL HARMS PEOPLE

Worker hazards: In manufacturing plants, it’s been linked to bronchiolitis obliterans — irreversible obstructive lung diseases — for which lung transplants are often the only way to survive. Lawsuits against diacetyl manufacturers by hundreds of workers in popcorn, flavoring and other food plants claiming injury from breathing diacetyl have led to jury awards and settlements of more than $20 million.

Consumer hazards: The Food and Drug Administration and the Consumer Product Safety Commission have declined to study the effect on consumers. The Environmental Protection Agency has looked at the vapors from heated diacetyl as an air pollutant but has not released the results to the public or to public health professionals.

Katy, also this: don’t have a link on it (will have to investigate when I have more time), but my Mom was telling me a few weeks ago that she heard that if bottled water is left in places where it can get very hot (say, in a car on a hot summer day) and the temperature of the bottles gets too hot, it can somehow cause cancer-causing chemicals to leach from the bottles into the water. If true, makes you also wonder about the plastic containers from companies such as Glad and Ziplock that are microwave “safe.” If heat can cause the problems with water in plastic containers, what does that say about the other types of plastic containers?

Bush has created a massive amount of terror through his aggressive illegal war.

  86. Ret. Col. Jack Ripper says:

Jake D.: “More top officials resigned during Clinton’s Administration.”

    That’s just not true.

Jake D.: “For the record, I will admit that Bush didn’t do anything to fight terrorists for the first nine months he was in office. Clinton was in office for 96 months.”

Barton Gellman in the Washington Post put it best, “By any measure available, Bill Clinton left office having given greater priority to terrorism than any president before him” and was the “first administration to undertake a systematic anti-terrorist effort”.

Jake D.: “I have no King but Jesus!!!”

    That’s not surprising.

  87. Perry Logan says:

Don’t make fun of Jake. The Republican Party has offered Jake considerable amounts of money to stop posting here. But Jake won’t sell out.

Barton Gellman offer his opinion, which you seem to value due to a by-line. Do you believe the National Enquirer, too?

I’ll be glad to educate you on what exactly Clinton did regarding terrorism. It may take a little time, but feel free to check back here over the next few days. You could find this info easily on the Google, if you so desired, but it would blow a hole in your “Clinton did nothing” B.S.

For starters, the Republican ass-clowns in Congress during Clinton’s term didn’t exactly take terrorism seriously. Excerpt from CNN.com’s archives, posted July 30, 1996, below. Oh, you’ll notice the part about Clinton wanting to expand wiretapping, and how Hatch rebuffed him. At least Clinton sought the approval of Congress, instead of what Bush did, which was to tell 8 members what his intentions were and then swear them to secrecy and then proceed with breaking the law. No…Hatch and other Repubs didn’t want to expand wiretapping, but when Bush does it illegally, he gets a free pass.

Republican leaders earlier met with White House Chief of Staff Leon Panetta for about an hour in response to the president’s call for “the very best ideas” for fighting terrorism.

Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, emerged from the meeting and said, “These are very controversial provisions that the White House wants. Some they’re not going to get.”

Hatch called Clinton’s proposed study of taggants — chemical markers in explosives that could help track terrorists — “a phony issue.”

“If they want to, they can study the thing” already, Hatch asserted. He also said he had some problems with the president’s proposals to expand wiretapping.

Senate Minority Leader Tom Daschle, D-South Dakota, said it is a mistake if Congress leaves town without addressing anti-terrorism legislation. Daschle is expected to hold a special meeting on the matter Wednesday with Congressional leaders.

    Are plastic bottles dangerous?
By LISA STIFFLER . P-I REPORTER

The answer to whether a chemical that leaches out of plastic baby and sports bottles and from the lining of tin cans is a serious threat to human health remains murky.

Just a week after a group of 38 scientists concluded in a peer-reviewed journal that the chemical, called bisphenol A, poses a significant risk, a government-appointed panel Wednesday disagreed.
