2007 monthly U.S. fatalities in Iraq surpass 2006 levels.»

Frank de Libero posts a chart showing that monthly GI deaths in 2007 are higher than in 2006. As Matthew Yglesias points out, “the ’surge’ strategy specifically contemplated risking higher American death rates…in order to accomplish some larger political goals. Unfortunately, those goals weren’t achieved so we just have more dead people.”

Yes, but in Bush world up is down and down is up.

  6. Pat Says:

I pray every day for our troops in Iraq. But the sad reality is that this is almost certainly going to be the deadliest year of the war for Americans:

    2003 - 486
    2004 - 849
    2005 - 846
    2006 - 822
    2007 - 749 (as of September 6)

So, every independent investigation is proving beyond a shadow of a doubt that not only has the surge not worked, that the violence is escalating and spreading into areas that previously were safe.

Please tell me how any sane human can think that this is a good idea??

Oh wait, I answered my own question, didn’t I?

  8. Dumb_Fox Says:

It’s a comma in history, remember.

  9. veritas Says:

Consistent with the GOA report: More deaths translate into “IT’S NOT WORKING”! ‘nuf said on that topic.

  10. Ben B Says:

…so “we just have more dead people.”

That’s so very accurate. Unfortunate. Worse, it should have been known ahead of time that this is what would happen…

Impeachment of Bubble Boy and Tricky Dick Redux IS a foregone conclusion. It will happen.

  12. TripMaster Monkey Says:

The “surge” is a dismal failure by every metric…except one.

The “surge” gave this administration yet another chance to say “hold on…just a little more time…just three more months…just six more months….just 15 more months…”.

The “surge” is just the latest justification for war without end, justifying our permanent military presence there. Wait and see. The next President (probably Hillary) will say, “yes, we’re pulling out, but we can’t leave all at once…just three more months…just six more months….just 15 more months…”.

Meet the new boss…same as the old boss.

  13. LividLib Says:

yeah, but at least we’re fighting those gosh darn terrorists over there instead of here! there’s just so many of them and they scare the hell out of me! i never realized how many terrorists there were in irack!
    bad terrorists!
    bad terrorists!
    you’re in trouble now!
the surge is gonna get ya!
    better watch out!

  14. texaslady Says:

With all Bush’s “advisors” leaving who will he be able to blame for the incompetence?

Everyone DID know that, but so what? This has nothing to do with troop security or civilian deaths ……. it is just “collateral damage” to get Dubya his “War President” merit badge so he and Paps can compare badge sizes over dinner in Paraguay, while their “awl” investments continue to grow.

  16. nanlichi Says:

This is the most telling of all statistics, and one that can’t be spun. But the lying incubus will spin away, make no doubt. A month to month comparison takes the weather factor out of the equation.

Iraq is a quagmire, sucking lives, limbs, honor and money down the hole. We remain there so the smirking inadequate punk doesn’t have to admit his mistake.

Rip George’s eyes out and skull f*ck him.

I don’t care if George Bush ever comes to the conclusion that he has failed. I do care if the American people’s voices can be heard that this has failed and that it’s time to alter the path we are on.

Fear is a powerful thing but continual, nameless fear has gone on too long. We all know there are bad people out there. We know some want to attack the US. If or when that happens, the world will see our response. Until then, we are draining our resources hunting a few dead enders.

    Change course.

  20. texaslady Says:

We need to be where we started, Afganistan. Bush has been sleeping buddies with Osama’s family since his Arbusto oil co, (failed) do you really think he wants to have to catch and do something about Osama? Actually Bush’s dad goes back even further with the Saudi’s so lets see who is higher on your priority list Americans or Saudis Check out the connections of the Carlyle group. Check who is selling what to the Saudis now, like Neil, Marvin and check Jeb’s new interest as well.

  21. Prabhata Says:

Last month, the administration and the media hailed that US troop deaths in July (79) was lower than in June (101). But today we don’t hear about the bad news, that deaths in August is higher than July.

  22. followthemoney Says:

Just remember that what you say and what you know has no effect on the behavior of a dictator. Say what you will, the dictator will do what he wants.

The only reason the dictator will listen to you is to gather information for future prosecutions for what he calls treason.

  23. The Republic of Stupidity Says:

that deaths in August is higher than July.

It’s only the 6th. We haven’t closed the books yet…

  24. ProudIowaLib Says:

All over oil. What a shame.

  25. texaslady Says:

After the “independant counsel” looking into the problems with the VA hospital Walter Reed, gave their advice. Bush said, ” I have no immediate plans to change anything.” That was per T. Snow.

Bush really cares about the military, doesn’t he?

  26. A Rey Says:

There are no words to qualify the absurdity and enormity of Bush´s and his actions against the American people and others in the world pushed to death and abyect poverty,

    and

why aren´t they impeached right now, if such a growing number of us are against it?

    Isn´t this unpatriotic and unmatriotic?

  27. Super Dave Says:

The Iraq and Afganistan invasions were to bracket Iran. We did not have a solid geographical position to launch against the primary traget Iran. We have been unable to buyoff the religios fanatics, like we bought off / help implode the USSR’s economy with the taget of a communist collapse.
We definite have a closer target from our on bases versus relying on Saudia or israel locations. Please note Amecian casualities have been from IED, not combat - fire fight actions. (Spoke from my military experience - when you engage the enemy both side have losses) Also, we have the tactical nuclear weapons in these countries in our safe FORTS. We are not in the country side. ( See how the British moved out of the city to the Iranian border recently —- Why???
