Who is the rabbi that is helping Bush? Aren’t the jewish people supposed to be a light to the gentiles? “Those who do not know the law, are cursed”, correct?
Why didn’t someone “in the know” advise the President?
A courtesy and honor was given to the Jewish people. Humility is also a godly characteristic.

Maybe this explains why he would be making a nationally televised address on Rosh Hashanah. Either that or he just wants to alienate 5% of the American population that will be celebrating a holiday Thursday. I dont seem to recall any nationally televised address on Christmas or Easter.

Every year we get the same anti bush blog spot from someone.

The White House does this EVERY year. I’m pretty sure Clinton and Bush 1 and Reagen also did it. They also do this early for Pesach and I think Chanukah. Maybe they should do it a few days before instead of a week, but when would be better ON Rosh Hashana? A few days people are running like rats preparing they wouldnt even hear about it. A week before is very nice, that way everyone sees the well wishes from President.

We should be thankful that they not only respect our right to practice our religion but that the President of the country sends his own well wishes to us for each holiday. We didn’t have it so sweet in generations past.

Let’s focus on the good, eh?

For Pete’s sake. News releases have always been sent out early so that they can get into printed publications in a timely fashion including those that are not printed daily. Better early than published days late. Our problem is now that we have near instant publication on the internet which seems peculiar.

Sure, I was as ready to take a crack at the President over this Rosh Hashanah thing as anybody (Comment # 131 above.) But I understand even St. Paulâ€™s letter to the Galatians went out a week early for logistical reasons (5 day ground delivery).

So Iâ€™m willing to accept any of the explanations for the early letter: get it dictated and out before Australia, mail early enough to be read in the synagogues, sent out over his name without even knowing it, a week early is perfectly acceptable. But acknowledging any of that, I got no schtick! (If somebody can find a photo of Clinton calling the congregation to prayer with the Saxophone, Iâ€™d be much obliged.)

To tell the truth, even if they made a mistake, itâ€™s OK on something like this, we all do (the war is another story). You may hate the guy, but itâ€™s really not that sportsmanlike to use a decent gesture like this to reinforce whatever preconceptions we may have about Bush, his intellect, etc. Thatâ€™s RW talk show stuff. Save it for something bad. Probably wonâ€™t be that long a wait.

And btw if you agree itâ€™s uncool to ad hominem Bush over this, than thereâ€™s not need to do it to each other — even when we ourselves are wright or wrong about this, or Clinton, or whatever. I havenâ€™t been reading this site long enough to know if itâ€™s an ongoing exchange and only in fun, but, right and left, we ought to be able to take this up a notch. Anyway thanks for indulging this opinion. Now have at me.

If Toilet Paper and all its hate-site adherents here brainlessly concur that Thompson’s phrase about quitting smoking was awkward, then they’re even more hopelessly unenlightened than 72-year-old Jim Moran. The difference is that event-attendee Moran has an excuse for his slow pickup: he’s probably senile and deteriorating in his old age. What Thompson meant, clearly enough, is that Al-Qaeda imposed bans on smoking (including bans on every other freedom and personal-choice issue like drinking, clothing, etc.) to the point where Sunnis realized that Al-Qaeda was an Islamofascist outfit, nothing else. Thompson’s smoking reference–misconceived by brain dead libtards–was a brilliant comparison of the anti-freedeom ideology of Al-Qaeda, an ideology which seeks to dictate people. The Sunnis finally realized this, and that’s why they’re joining the US in Anbar.

Hate to burst your bubble everyone, but Bush did not write or release that statement. I doubt he even knows what Rosh Hoshanah is and we all know he is incapable of putting a sentence together.

Technically, I don’t think the greeting is wrong if given before actual date. It’s like saying “Happy New Year” before Jan 1, but this announcement did sound as if Rosh Hoshanah began this evening.

Jake? You posting the thing showing Clinton issuing a Rosh Hashanah statement on September 5, 1994 makes you look stupid. Rosh Hashanah was actually ON September 5th in 1994 (http://www.bioinfo.rpi.edu/~zukerm/cgi-bin/nph-g2h-cal.cgi?MONTH=September&YEAR=1994). And do you REALLY think that synagogues all over the country read Presidential statements during their High Holy Day services?
