In her recent column on bus safety, Rep. Jean Schmidt (R-OH) warned school children to “never bend down near or under the bus to pick something up that has fallen.” An observant Ohio blog, The Daily Bellwether, noticed that parts of Schmidt’s column were strikingly similar to columns written by former Ohio State Highway Patrol Col. Paul McClellan. The Cincinnati Enquirer confirmed Schmidt’s cut-and-paste plagiarism today:
If Rep. Jean Schmidt’s latest column on school bus safety looked familiar, there’s a good reason why.
Six sentences from her column of last Tuesday appear to be cut and pasted in identical form from a column written in October 2005 by then-Ohio State Highway Patrol Col. Paul McClellan. […]
For example, Schmidt’s column says: “When exiting the bus, care should be taken to check that clothing with drawstrings and book bags with straps do not get caught in the handrails or doors. Additionally, students should never go back for anything left on the bus, and never bend down near or under the bus to pick something up that has fallen.”
McClellan’s column says: “When exiting the bus, care should be taken to check that clothing with drawstrings and book bags with straps do not get caught in the handrails or doors. Additionally, students should never go back for anything left on the bus, and never bend down near or under the bus to pick something up that has fallen.”
This isn’t the first time Schmidt has been caught passing off other people’s words as her own. In September 2006, Schmidt appropriated passages from Rep. Deborah Pryce’s (R-OH) press releases for a column on Medicare.

Yawn.

September 7th, 2007 at 12:50 pm#8 - that would be me!!! AT least Schmidt is not running for President. She’s just a right-wing attack dog. Republicans know better than to let attack dogs run for President. With Hillary leading the polls, Democrats cannot say the same.
September 7th, 2007 at 12:52 pmIt’s a small part of a child safety column TP, not a novel or research paper. This is a junk post that falls below your already low standards.
September 7th, 2007 at 12:52 pmWe already knew that Schmidt was a hack. She lifted the persona and character of a famous tv and film actress.

the problem is you’ve traded right wing trollling points for left wing trolling points. the left-wing trollers are either ignored or mocked too. why not try easing into it: ask why bush ignored the august 6 nie, or why cheney old company is getting so many no bid contracts when he is going to profit from them. You could also explore the destruction of the constitution, but that may be too big a step. Why don’t you just lean back a for a minute, put on a dead tape from your favorite show, pack your bong and take a long slow toke. that’s it, now hold it, don’t cough, hold it, hold it, ok, let it out. there, don’t you feel better now?

I hear people talkin’ bad,
About the way we have to live here in this country,
Harpin’ on the wars we fight,
An’ gripin’ ’bout the way things oughta be.
An’ I don’t mind ‘em switchin’ sides,
An’ standin’ up for things they believe in.
When they’re runnin’ down my country, man,
They’re walkin’ on the fightin’ side of me.
Yeah, walkin’ on the fightin’ side of me.
Runnin’ down the way of life,
Our fightin’ men have fought and died to keep.
If you don’t love it, leave it:
Let this song I’m singin’ be a warnin’.
If you’re runnin’ down my country, man,
You’re walkin’ on the fightin’ side of me.
I read about some squirrely guy,
Who claims, he just don’t believe in fightin’.
An’ I wonder just how long,
The rest of us can count on bein’ free.
They love our milk an’ honey,
But they preach about some other way of livin’.
When they’re runnin’ down my country, hoss,
They’re walkin’ on the fightin’ side of me.
Yeah, walkin’ on the fightin’ side of me.
Runnin’ down the way of life,
Our fightin’ men have fought and died to keep.
If you don’t love it, leave it:

Dirt roads and white lines and all kinds of stop signs,
But I stand right here where I’m at,

And two kind of babies to hold.
There’s two kind of cherries and two kind of fairies,
And two kind of mothers I’m told, and told
Cowboys and outlaws, right guys and southpaws,
Good dogs and all kinds of cats.
Dirt roads and white lines and all kinds of stop signs,
But I stand right here where I’m at,

(Radin, 1991) Other newspaper editorials defended King, saying he was still a great man regardless of his actions. Some articles questioned why the plagiarism went unnoticed.
couldn’t get away with it these days… and shouldn’t…
September 7th, 2007 at 3:26 pmthere really is no good excuse today…
…
If she’s like virtually all other members of Congress, Schmidt has these things written for her by junior staff, usually not-too-smart twenty-somethings. Almost all Congressmen are plagiarists in that sense. People of normal intelligence probably suspect as much, but aren’t too bothered, because it’s obviously trivial PR only tenuously related to the main work of Congress. Schmidt’s special problem is that her staffers evidently are too stupid to even minimally rephrase what they’re copying. Take it as a sign that her office may also do bad work on more important matters.

OH YEA!! Ever hear the Duets album by Emmy and especially the song she does with Graham. Knocks me out.
And her “Boulder to Birmingham” is maybe the best song ever written. Especially when sung at Red Rocks with a full moon and 10,000 people singing along! YUMM

September 7th, 2007 at 6:49 pmI am certainly not a Jean Schmidt supporter, but good advice is good advice. Maybe it was the first time someone heard it. I think this criticism is very petty.
September 7th, 2007 at 8:50 pmIf I had to write about bus safety (yawn), I might copy down a few good points from whatever (ho hum) library book I could find on the subje…. *zzzzzzz.
September 7th, 2007 at 9:32 pmEr… repeating safety messages is plagiarism ?
September 7th, 2007 at 10:03 pmYou want to get cracking on the 4.8 billion cases of that happening with statements by the surgeon general now or what ?
What else would you expect from a pathetic cunt?
September 8th, 2007 at 12:35 amActually, if I had my say, I’d say that the rule should be that when exiting the bus, care should be taken to check that clothing with drawstrings and book bags with straps do not get caught in the handrails or doors. Additionally, students should never go back for anything left on the bus, and never bend down near or under the bus to pick something up that has fallen.

September 8th, 2007 at 1:31 amOk, first off, I dislike Schmidt as much as the next liberal democrat.
But, the sentences that she is being accused of lifting from McClellan, also appeared in a 1998 article by Colonel Kenneth B. Marshall, Superintendent, Ohio State Highway Patrol.
http://www.statepatrol.ohio.gov/colcolumn/1998/0998MESS.HTML
And I bet he lifted them from someplace else. These tips smack of basic recommendations provided in safety lists for decades. In fact, I think I recall some of them from my bus riding days, 30 years ago…

No, but trying to pretend they’re your own words (when clearly they’re not) is plagiarism. All she had to do was say something like, “According to the State Secretary of Education, children exiting…”. Instead, she tried to make it look the words were her own original ones. That is plagiarism.
September 8th, 2007 at 5:24 amWhat are you fkn slow ?
September 8th, 2007 at 6:18 amWhy would anyone do anything other than repeat precisely what the authorities want children told about road safety ?
You would be happier if she came up with her own statements would you ?
You even think that was what was being attempted apparently. That a government official was expanding their literary career with a road safety message. FFS use you brain idiot.
Here’s the one guy who saw Bush continuing to read my pet goat on 9/11 and had a problem with that because he may have breached copyright laws on public use.
September 8th, 2007 at 6:20 am“She is female all right, one of the reasons that the lib males here are so scared of her.
Now if Schmidt were a transgender interpretive dancer, the libs would be drooling over her pic.”
I am going to use this in a class I am teaching on “Why Just Saying Scattered Random Things in an Attempt to be Cutting and Sardonic Doesn’t Work Real Well.” Hope that’s okay.
It’s a graduate course.
