ThinkFast: September 7, 2007

petraeuspress.jpg

Though Gen. David Petraeus has told President Bush “that he wants to maintain heightened troop levels in Iraq well into next year,” a senior U.S. official says the general is willing to consider a slight drawdown of “between 3,500 and 4,500 U.S. troops from Iraq early next year.”

Rep. Mike Simpson (R-ID) lashed out at Senate Republican leaders yesterday over their efforts to force Sen. Larry Craig (R-ID) to resign. “I hope I never stub my toe and they throw me under the bus,” said Simpson. “It kind of makes you wonder what party you want to be a member of,” he added, noting he has no intention of switching parties.

“American intelligence agencies are expecting Osama bin Laden to issue a triumphant message to Al Qaeda followers on the sixth anniversary of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks boasting of Al Qaeda’s growing numbers and success in the Middle East and Southeast Asia.” The al-Qaida leader has not appeared in new video footage since October 2004.

Seven U.S. troops have been killed in Iraq, including four in the western province of Anbar, the U.S. military said on Friday.” The deaths take to more than 3,750 the number of U.S. soldiers killed since the start of the U.S.-led invasion in 2003.

Yesterday, the head of the Justice Department’s civil division announced that he will be leaving in two weeks. His departure “will leave only two of the department’s six key litigation divisions headed by Senate-confirmed officials.” Once Alberto Gonzales steps down, all three of the Justice Department’s top positions will also be filled by “acting” officials.

“The Arctic ice cap is melting faster than scientists had expected and will shrink 40 percent by 2050 in most regions, with grim consequences for polar bears, walruses and other marine animals,” according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Yesterday, the Senate “brushed past Bush administration protests and passed legislation containing big budget increases for medical care for veterans.” The Veterans Affairs budget bill, passed by a 92-1 vote, would give the department a 10 percent increase for its health care accounts next year.

“More than 260 doctors from around the world have launched an unprecedented attack on the American medical establishment for its failure to condemn unethical practices by medical practitioners at the Guantanamo Bay prison camp in Cuba.”

And finally: “Even for someone as gaffe-prone as U.S. President George W. Bush, he was in rare form on Friday.” He thanked Australia for hosting the OPEC — instead of APEC — summit, even though Australia has never been a member of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries. He also brought up the “Austrian troops in Iraq,” even though there are Australian, but not Austrian, troops serving there.

What did we miss? Let us know in the comments section.

Depends on how wide your stance is and who’s foot you stub your toe on.

This made me chuckle, read on some blog. “Craig is going to become the spokesman for restless leg syndrome.”

Senator M. Simpson (ID)…seems to be interested in what the GOP Senators did to Senator Criag rather than what Craig did in the bathroom..and admitted doing it. He is angry because he thinks that the party should line up in defending Craig behavior.

War was good for the economy in the past because we actually made things in the United States and Corporations actually paid taxes. With our new system of capitalism, very little of what is manufactured for war is made in this country and companies like Haliburton and Blackwater are registered outside the US so they don’t have to pay US income taxes.

    This presents several possibilities:

    1) Either OBL is dead but they want everyone to think he is still alive.

Yes, it is unfortunate that the Democrats in Congress actually believed what Petraus said during his confirmation hearings. I’ve got a bet for you.. I’ll bet you can’t find a SINGLE verified example of an electronic voting glitch, ANYWHERE, that benefitted a democatic candidate in either the 2000 or 2004 election. find one then we’ll talk about the “myth” of rigged elections.. there were plenty that went in bush’s favor (such as -16,000 votes for gore in one county.. later found and corrected via paper verified ballots).. if these errors were truly mistakes, they should happen to both sides.. strangely,, they dont..

I don’t believe all republicans are bad or hate the troops but I do believe they allowed their party to be taken over and guided by the likes of Neocons and the PNAC. The strong arm tactics of Cheney, Rove, Wolfowitz and Rumsfeld pushed thru the notion that Iraq was the central front on this new “War on Terror” and we were force fed a steady diet of having to go into Iraq to save ourselves.

The republicans (wanting to secure that permanent majority) seized on this, bonding it with the idea your not a patriot if you question us. Fear led the way. Not evidence, not logistical planning. Just fear.

No WMD’s. No link between Saddam and 9 eleven. No proper planning to pay for this. No proper long term military/political plan. All on the shoulders of this administration and the republican controlled congress. Weak and missled democrats followed and will also be held accountable.

I don’t hate all republicans. I just won’t trust them for creating the enormous debt, sacrificing thousands of our bravest and using fear to push us farther away from the open form of Govt. we had. This is all on their shoulders.

    The New York Times

“Yet over the past few weeks a number of journalists, ranging from The Washington Post’s ombudsman to the “Today” show’s Katie Couric, have declared that Mr. Abramoff gave money to both parties. In each case the journalists or their news organization, when challenged, grudgingly conceded that Mr. Abramoff himself hasn’t given a penny to Democrats. But in each case they claimed that this is only a technical point, because Mr. Abramoff’s clients — those Indian tribes — gave money to Democrats as well as Republicans, money the news organizations say he “directed” to Democrats.

But the tribes were already giving money to Democrats before Mr. Abramoff entered the picture; he persuaded them to reduce those Democratic donations, while giving much more money to Republicans. A study commissioned by The American Prospect shows that the tribes’ donations to Democrats fell by 9 percent after they hired Mr. Abramoff, while their contributions to Republicans more than doubled. So in any normal sense of the word “directed,” Mr. Abramoff directed funds away from Democrats, not toward them.”

Does he think that everything will be hunky-dory at that time and then we can leave? Of course not. It’s just another push back on the timeline. There is ethnice cleansing in the secure area of Baghdad, no unified government, no decrease in military or civilian deaths, the British are leaving the south, etc. The only bright spot has been that al-Sadr has called for a short time of peace in order to regroup. 129. Mark says:

I love it when republicans talk about liberals being so angry, the angry left. I think this is wrong for a couple of reasons. First republicans today label anyone who is not dry humping bush as far left liberal. What they don’t see is that they are so far removed from the main stream that the true middle looks far left to them. They are so far right that they have no clue what the far left truly is anymore, to them moderates are extremists, while they themselves from their extreme position view themselves as moderates and mainstream. Second they think that when they spew their lies and lies and more lies over and over that any reaction to those lies which seems not to be calm and in agreement with them is an angry reaction. They confuse anger with frustration. Who wouldn’t be frustrated and or angry when you expose the fantasy and try and show reality, yet get answered with more and more fantasy? Third as republicans love to project one only has to look at their rhetoric and their mood over the years to see where the anger and self loathing really is. Republicans make it plain and clear that they pretty much hate anything that is not them and or does not agree with them. Go figure.

r…it looks like you are the guy who is up on the scandals. Got any scoop on the reporter who was writing a book about Bush who ended up dead? Just curious.

You’re right – it should be left to failed entrepreneurs instead.

  144. hellinabucket says:

OPEC instead of APEC. Austria instead of Australia. Does our President have controlling the world with oil on his mind???? Or is he just stupid? You decide.

Reason #15 not to vote for a repbulican. They eat their own.

  145. Not Canadian says:

    Explain that.

Don’t play devils advocate! You know, it’s the “gay” thing that differentiates the two for the Repukes!

  146. O. Bigfoot says:

“Ha, knocking down your cliched talking points is help.. helping me.. this time next year I should be a lawyer, and honing my mental blade on the dull surface that is your arguments is going to better help me expose all the frauds and criminals you support someday..

And that is how you are going to win cases? By attacking the oppositions wife, who you don’t know, and never met?

Please, send me a card if you pass the bar (which, at this point, appears to be a BIG if), so I know who NOT to hire if I ever need a lawyer.

With arguments like yours, I can see I would be better off representing myself…or hiring Mickey Mouse.

Oh, and that should have been “Mickey Mouse, Esq.”

    Or “Dewey, Cheatem, and Howe.”

    Or “Howard, Fine, and Howard”.

  148. hellinabucket says:

Calling Dr. Howard, Dr. Fine, Dr. Howard. That stuff was wonderful. No Curly Joe though.

    >And that is how you are going to win cases? By attacking the oppositions >wife, who you don’t know, and never met?

Its just icing on my cake because you scumbags like to go after peoples personal lives as well. I cited numerous articles explaning why your Wapo assertion didnt prove he GAVE anythign to dems….
I asked you to cite any database of campaign contributions that showed abrahmoff’s name as giving to a dem.. and you .. tell me to “get a life”

    >Please, send me a card if you pass the bar (which, at this point, appears >to be a BIG if), so I know who NOT to hire if I ever need a lawyer.

I wanted a fool for a client I’d represent myself, thanks.
Don’t worry, i’ll be back in about a year to speak more about it…

(statisically, the GPA range im in, about 98 percent of the people at my school pass the bar the first time)

OMFG Bush is dumb!! Opec and Austrian troops, what a dumbf$ck. The people who still support this clown are as dumb if not dumber than the chimp in charge. Do you moron trolls enjoy having a mental nitwit as President?

    >wife, who you don’t know, and never met?

you can tell alot by the company people keep. i can already tell your some twisted macho sicko with a deep seated desire to be told what to do, so anyone who would let a repressed creeep like you into thier vagina especially enough times to make 5 nutlings, must be one sick puppy themselves..

ps.. have you figured out what the word “ACCOUNTABILITY” means yet?
it has nothing to do with accountants…

    “No Curly Joe though.

    Comment by hellinabucket — September 7, 2007 @ 11:03 am”

Yeah, that Curly Joe was something else…did you ever see the Three Stooges Cartoon where they were looking for Uranium in the desert? Curly Joe as a cartoon character…

I guess they were getting a little to old to take the pratfalls by then.

    Shemp is my favorite.

    Government ACCOUNTABILITY Office (not ACCOUNTING)

    http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/accountability

    [uh-koun-tuh-bil-i-tee] Pronunciation Key –
–noun 1. the state of being accountable, liable, or answerable.
    2. Education. a policy of holding schools and teachers accountable for students’ academic progress by linking such progress with funding for salaries, maintenance, etc.

Is this you idiots current meme?….The GAO is nothing but a bunch of accoutants.. I suppose coming from the Osama = Obama crowd, this shouldnt be surprising…

Ah Accounting, Accountability whatever. My point is that you shouldn’t let anyone but a true red Republican dictate to the masses of the U.S. And the world for that matter.

  156. Chocolate Jesus says:

    >Ah Accounting, Accountability whatever.

Hahahaha. I rest my case.. good night and good luck smuck…

OK, I stand corrected on the word “Accounting” vs. “Accountability”.

However, here is how they describe themselves when one Googles GAO:

“Investigative arm of Congress charged with examining matters relating to the receipt and payment of public funds.”

Check out their website. Still accountants.

  161. O. Bigfoot says:

Money should not be an issue where war is concerned. Spend whatever it takes to remove whatever threat you see. And if the threat turns out to be much less then you anticipated thats ok too. At least it won’t grow into a larger threat. If you see ants in the garden you bomb them. If it turns out they were the only ants there no big deal. You don’t solve the worlds problems with pleasant requests. You bomb first ask questions later. Wait for Iran. You’ll get the point.

  162. jb says:

    Still accountants.

Ah yes, the party of fiscal responsibility. I guess that also went the way of moral values. GOP are all hat and no cow.

  163. OxyCon says:

Mr. Teen South Carolina George W. Bush:

And finally: “Even for someone as gaffe-prone as U.S. President George W. Bush, he was in rare form on Friday.” He thanked Australia for hosting the OPEC — instead of APEC — summit, even though Australia has never been a member of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries. He also brought up the “Austrian troops in Iraq,” even though there are Australian, but not Austrian, troops serving there.

  164. O. Bigfoot says:

Regarding 149 and 152, apparently someone gets their kicks by namejacking, and then denying their own namejacked posts. Funny, but not that funny.

Got work to do: Gonna head over the the Three Stooges Blogs and talk about something important for a while.

The best way to get rid of a namejacker is to call them out. Seeya fake bigfoot.

  169. hellinabucket says:

Money should and is a very big issue where war is concerned. It can’t be fought without it. You simplify the concept to fit into the “Stay the Course” mantra but fail to account for the logistics, planning and finicancial aspects.

War throughout history has been guided by money. Spending whatever it takes to remove whatever threat you see is one of the root problems this administration has created. They never established either and now, using your logic, the only course of action is to increase spending and the military to complete something that still hasn’t been understood.

Democracy is a choice. Forcing it on another country is going against the core principals of Democracy. The voice of the people in Iraq has not been heard. Bush opened a can of worms that he doesn’t understand and wants all of america to pay for his mistake.

  170. O. Bigfoot says:

155 is another poser too, though with minor changes, that would be something I would say.

It used to be amusing to watch the “Bush is my God” sycophants defend the indefensible, but it is getting to the point of disgusting.

The Bush defenders are like the wife of a child molester who is raping their 12 year old daughter. She ignore the screams at night and the bloody sheets because “He’s a good man. He wouldn’t do that”.

They support Bush because they share the same creation myth, not on the merits of his policies.

    Pretty sad.

Could it be the commonality of prog collaborators & bin Laden?
    Let’s see:

BOTH Progs & OBL despise George Bush…..
BOTH Progs & OBL want the US out of Iraq…..
BOTH Progs & OBL blame US/Israeli/Mid East policy for jihadism….
BOTH Progs & OBL despise the corporate culture of capitalism….
BOTH Progs & OBL are “concerned” about global warming….
BOTH Progs & OBL are strangely invested in re-capturing their “youth”.
