Thompson: Osama Bin Laden Is ‘More Symbolism Than Anything Else’

tpig.jpg Speaking to reporters in Iowa today aboard his “brightly colored campaign bus,” Fred Thompson spoke about the war in Iraq and the war against terrorist networks. He claimed — without any evidence — that “Americans are beginning to move in his direction in their support for the war in Iraq.” He also dismissed the threat of Osama bin Laden:

Bin Laden is more symbolism than anything else. I think it demonstrates to people once again that we’re in a global war.

Thompson’s statement echoes the sentiments of President Bush, who in March 2002 said, “I truly am not that concerned about” bin Laden, and Ann Coulter, who said in Aug. 2006 said that bin Laden is “irrelevant.”

Yet bin Laden — the man who masterminded the attacks on 9/11 — is more than just a “symbol.” Today he issued a new videotape promising to “escalate the killing and fighting against you.”

In May, U.S. News reported that “bin Laden already has a safe haven in Pakistan — and may be stronger than ever” as al Qaeda “retains the ability to organize complex, mass-casualty attacks and inspire others.” Bin Laden is behind much of this resurgence:

The broader movement inspired by al Qaeda has only grown bigger, largely because of the group’s powerful propaganda machine. Bin Laden and Zawahiri have been able to fill in the gaps between their megaplots with a rising stream of smaller-scale, homegrown attacks.

U.S. intelligence officials are also now admitting that they overestimated the “damage they had inflicted on al Qaeda’s network,” with the war in Iraq serving as an “undeniable boon for al Qaeda.”

UPDATE: Kicking Ass notes that today on Good Morning America, Thompson said, “I think the point is clearly he’s there, clearly he’s somewhere along the Afghanistan-Pakistan border and clearly he’s still giving orders.” Watch it:

Digg It!

Sadly, yes. If they ran Ron Paul, I think he could actually provide some serious competition, but they won’t do that. As I’ve said before, as long as the dems don’t run Hillary, the ‘08 election will be a slam dunk.

UKNOWN LETTER FROM OBL TO BUSH
After numerous rounds of “We don’t know if Osama is still alive,” Osama
himself decided to send George Bush a letter in his own handwriting to
let him know he was still in the game. Bush opened the letter and it
appeared to contain a single line of coded message:

    *370HSSV-0773H*

Bush was baffled, so he emailed it to Condi Rice. Condi and her aides
had no clue either, so they sent it to the FBI. No one could solve it
at the FBI so it went to the CIA, then to the NSA.

With no clue as to its meaning, they eventually asked Britain ’s MI-6
for help. Within a minute MI-6 cabled the White House with this reply:

“Tell the President he’s holding the message upside down.”

  13. Rosencrantz says:

Glad to see a Republican finally tell the truth to the American people…that Osama is “more symbolism than anything else.” Of course liberals and progressives have known that for years now. We already know the Republicans use Osama more as a “boogeyman” to freighten people into “behaving”. We also know that “behaving” for Republicans means absolute servitude to their agenda and never questioning them.

Is it just that the rest of the GOP field is so weak? Weren’t you tripping on the nobody Tancredo some weeks ago? Spell it out what specific aspects of Thompson or his platform should make me consider him?

How heavy is the water today. Why do you want OBL to go free and state he is no significance? Why do you excuse OBL have you forgotten about the 3,000 Americans murdered on 9/11?

Apparently you now support OBL if it helps protect your Failure in Chief.

  28. Poerba says:

Without a modifier like “alleged” or “supposed” before “masterminded,” this post reinforces the official 9/11 conspiracy theory (OBL, some cash, and 19 guys, some under FBI surveillance) . Did he mastermind nationwide NORAD etc war games that morning which confused the many civil and military aviation agencies involved? Check the Commission Report which openly acknowledges these before you flame. This mastermind must have gotten hella lucky. The bigger question is does Thompson really know anything or is he just parroting Bush? I pick the latter, but given Nixon ties (Cheney, Rummy) maybe he’s still in the neocon intel loop.

  60. DreamCrusher says:

    Ha ha ha ha!

    Amanda, please.

You can’t feign some kind of concern about Osama bin Laden when Think Progress’ first item on his new video is because of something Fred Thompson said about it.

At least Fred Thompson actually responded to the new video – Think Progress and the other big liberal blogs have simply ignored it. Why? Well it’s obvious: Osama bin Laden is reading off your own cue cards.

Whether bin Laden actually means what he says is another thing (I doubt it), but when will the liberal hordes admit that Osama bin Laden is using YOUR talking points? When will you admit that the transcript of Osama bin Laden’s video could easily have been almost entirely lifted off the pages of Think Progress or DailyKos?

No, instead you feign outrage over Thompson stating that Osama bin Laden is mostly a symbol. Which he is – he is spending so much time hiding out that he no longer has real operational control over his organization. If we kill him, al Qaeda will still be there. Terrorism will still go on. I’m pretty damn sure Think Progress has stated this indisputable fact earlier.

So when Fred Thompson says the same thing, you feign outrage to mask the fact that you are too damn cowardly to admit the haunting reality of Osama bin Laden stealing your lines.

    Absolutely despicable.

Yes he said it was symbolic, and it is, Osama is only one man, a man that George does not care where he is, so why should you or Fred?

The fact is Osama is not readin off cue cards, I dont have any, once again the Republican mantra is project project project.

Which is no way to view reality, in fact, its a way of dismissing reality.

  65. J Lewd says:

So, Osama Bush Laden is really just a symbol. Tell us something we don’t already know, you pig-jowled chucklefu*k — like the Wag-the-Dog truth of the matter: that he is nothing more than a straw dog fabrication created by the neocons.

Let me remind you that I said, “…the transcript of Osama bin Laden’s video could easily have been almost entirely lifted off the pages of Think Progress or DailyKos…”

Give me a break, coward. Virtually everything Osama bin Laden said has been said at Think Progress or DailyKos the past 6 years. He is copying your talking points. He is copying your arguments. He is copying your message.

At least try to spin it and say that he is doing it to drive a wedge between Americans (which might very well be the case). But can you at least just be honest and acknowledge that, yes, the message bin Laden is using comes directly from the liberal anti-war Left?

I mean, attacking capitalism? Straight out of the Left’s handbook. Attacking the Dems who won’t get the US out of Iraq? DailyKos just had a post on that yesterday.

By staying silent about it, DailyKos, Think Progress, and the rest of the Left are making fools of themselves.

Oh look I can bold words in my post too, just like the self styled dreamcrusher. God you people are slow. Osama Doesn’t want us to go anywhere. He likes us in Iraq where they can kill our soldiers and bleed our treasury. As long as Bush and the idiots like you want us to stay there, then he wins. He loses if we leave Iraq, and actually track him and his cohorts down.

  81. KingCranky says:

Sorry, can’t logically bleat, squeal and screech about the danger from al-Qaeda while yawning off bin Laden at the same time, but logic obviously didn’t dissuade Thompson from venting his daffiness

And maybe Thompson should also note that by stupidly invading and occupyig Iraq, W meekly surrendered to bin Laden, the Taliban and al-Qaeda, the inevitable outcome of cutting and running from finishing off those entities in Afghanistan to march into Iraq

And all so W could show up his own father by doing something Bush Sr obviously wasn’t idiotic enough to try, invade & occupy Iraq

And now, bin Laden, the Taliban and al-Qaeda have not only regrouped on the Afghanistan/Pakistan border, they’ve also retaken formerly NATO held territory since the US invasion of Iraq

Consider also that Pakistan has highly placed officials in its military and intelligence services very sympathetic to bin Laden, the Taliban and al-Qaeda

And Pakistan-unlike Iran-has an actual nuclear arsenal, and recently tested a nuclear-payload capable missile

And Fred, symbolism aside, bin Laden also has an enormous bankroll, and can undoubtedly get his hands on multiple amounts of his own fortune

bin Laden, al-Qaeda & the Taliban holed up in Pakistan

Pakistan military and intel services have highly ranked sympathizers for UbL, aQ, & Taliban

    UbL has huge bankroll

    Pakistan has nuclear arsenal

Fred Thompson, have enough dots been connected for you yet?

Maybe someday it’ll be obvious how going into Iraq avenged ANY of the Sept 11 victims, or taught bin Laden a real lesson, but I sure as Hell don’t see that explanation now

Well according to mister p’s blog leftists are all born with silver spoons in their mouths, that means they are capitalist.

The point you are missing is that marxist capitalism leads to revolutions and disparity. Free Markets, as the sub prime collapse show, are myths, what the left is saying is that bottom line profits outsource jobs to forein and in this case, communist labor, hardly a patriotic thing to do.

American Corporations that outsource are not for the working American at all. The fact is the sub=prime mess is not because people didnt want to pay back the loans, its that they couldnt pay them back because the mythical free market capitalism is choking the Americans. Even the Walmart CEO says American dont have any money to spend.

Mythical free market capitalism will choke itself and America to death and give rise to communist China. It will also result in something like communism and it will not be the fault of the working American, but avarice.

Moderation is the key to continuuing our democratic republic growth.

He makes it VERY clear. If you dont understand that then you have not watched his videos and read his words for yourself.

The things he wants to do is SOLVE the problems. Not stick to some party line. Some things can be solved via Federal Government… many things can be solved equally well in the private sector when following rules… Ron Paul leans toward solving problems FIRST via the private sector for a VERY good reason… power in the hands of the Federal government ends up be sold off to the highest bidder by Congress… We have all seen this to a SICKENING degree…

The Democrats are lieing to our faces and have continued to do so for decades … republicans just the same… the Constitution is being undermined by those that abuse it and those that refuse to defend it.

Ron Paul defends it in the face of being BOOED… watch his speech on the floor of the house BEFORE the Iraq invasion… how many democrats had the balls to call out Bush like that?

  181. Ret. Col. Jack Ripper says:

Gerald Gibson: “Some things can be solved via Federal Government… many things can be solved equally well in the private sector when following rules…”

But, Gerald, doesn’t that statement inadvertently describe one of the fatal flaws of libertarian philosophy? Corporations have proven over an over that in the absence of government regulation, they will NOT follow “rules.” The libertarian wants no regulation of capitalism and trusts “the market” to sort things out. But, in the absence of regulation, big capitalism always drifts towards monopoly and manipulates markets.

The absence of government may or may not bring about more individual freedom; it depends on the particular issue — but it ALWAYS results in more corporate power. You can count on that. That’s why libertarians are inadvertently doing the political business of large corporate interests.

If you look closely at what I said I was careful to include the words “with rules” … as does Ron Paul. He makes no claims (like the neocons do) that unfettered capitalism is good. He simply makes the case that if the Constitution is FAIRLY and EVENLY enforced… the capitalism would be checked by the government enforcing the Constitution.

  187. Ret. Col. Jack Ripper says:

The other thing about libertarian philosophy is that from the Founders perspective, they would have considered it to be profoundly unamerican. Their vision was civil government which, by its nature, gave power to a thriving middle class. Their vision was a robust “commons” which would help provide liberty and happiness to citizens. “We the people,” not Me the individual. “to promote the common welfare,” not to provide protection for my property rights.

  188. Ret. Col. Jack Ripper says:

Gerald: “He simply makes the case that if the Constitution is FAIRLY and EVENLY enforced… the capitalism would be checked by the government enforcing the Constitution.”

Yes, he commits the same error of reasoning all doctrinaire libertarians do – he confuses a political system with an economic system. The constitution describes a political system. “Capitalism” describes an economic system.

You can’t have an absence of government regulation of capitalism and “rules” at the same time. Their mutually exclusive.

Comment by Ret. Col. Jack Ripper

Protection of the indivdual (property and liberties) IS protection of WE the People. We are not a collective. We are a group of individuals with unalienable rights that belong to us personally not to some group that we may belong to. The Founding Fathers did NOT make any claims that individuals property should be subject to the government in order to maintain the welfair of the masses. They DID make it clear that if the government was used to enforce the Constitution then the individuals in a good society would take care of each other…

You and I have NEVER in our lives experienced this however. The corruption started long before we were born. Enforce what the founding fathers were actually after… limits on the power of the government and the enforcement of each individuals rights… and the good people among us will help those around us… and the opposite of this will result in what we have today… everyman for himself because the game has been rigged!

Comment by Ret. Col. Jack Ripper

The “rules” are the Constitution…. if that is not violated then we are all ok.. some of us will be poor… some will be rich… that is FREEDOM… however in a society that has had its government (politics) corrupted like we have then you see far fewer examples of the people helping each other out with the economic side of life.

Get rid of the corruption (democratic and republican) and that means for the business owners and the workers EQUALLY and then the embalance works itself out. If someone gets so rich that they think they can violate the Constitution THEN the Federal government comes down on them like a sledge hammer… instead today they just get paid off…

With them both are in debt up to our eyeballs… We are not even sure what our money is based on anymore… Secret government and secret hedge funds….

No, it’s protection for property owners. The founders recognized that people without property also had rights.

Gerald: “We are not a collective. We are a group of individuals with unalienable rights that belong to us personally not to some group that we may belong to.”

We are individuals with little or no political power. We come together as a collective to gain political power through our representatives. The community makes the rules, not the individual.

Gerald: “You and I have NEVER in our lives experienced this however.”

No, a number of times, our society has experienced periods of little or no regulation of capitalism and the result has always been a disaster for the vast majority of our people.

  235. DreamCrusher says:

I think it’s illuminating that still now, after almost a full day has passed, only one major liberal blog has actually commented on the bin Laden video – Talking Points Memo. Of course Joshua Marshall could not admit or discuss the simple fact that Osama bin Laden was regurgitating what he and all the other liberals have been spewing the last few years.

In fact, Marshall compared bin Laden to a crazy homeless person talking nonsense on the sidewalk. That’s pretty funny considering the fact that Osama bin Laden was just retelling the same talking points that the Left has been bathing in for years. In essence, Marshall is saying that the Left is a crazy incoherent homeless person talking nonsense.

That Think Progress, DailyKos, Atrios, and HuffPo haven’t even written their own commentary on the video, much less actually mention it at all (DailyKos), is all you need to know.

Glenn Greenwald mentioned it in passing along with a lot of other items, where he, like Think Progress, criticizes others for their reaction to the video. He makes no comment on what the video means, about its contents, or the meaning of OBL himself at this current time.

On the one hand, the Left downplays Osama bin Laden, because he reads right off their cue cards all the time, and because they say that he is just a boogey man that the GOP uses to scare voters into submission. On the other hand, the Left continually attacks the President for supposedly abandoning the hunt for bin Laden, even though we still have around as many soldiers in Afghanistan as we did when we invaded in 2001, and attacks Bush for saying he isn’t too concerned with OBL.

The Left proves once again that they do not take this seriously, all they are concerned about is their domestic political prospects, and hypocritically attacking their political enemies about the man they will not talk about because he stole their tongue.

  236. Freddy Thompson says:

Comment by Ret. Col. Jack Ripper

Unregulated capitalism is not what Ron Paul is offering. I know that is what all the chest thumping republican trolls go on about because they just want a reaction out of people so they say rediculous strawman type arguments.

If the “rules” …the Constitution was ENFORCED… there would be regulation. If a company breaks the rules you nail their ass… all the other companies see this and they quickly change their behavior to mitigate the risk of having the government punish them… THAT does not happen often and the only time you see a company do anything good is when the government comes in and makes a list of all the things they must do… And just like people that get dependant on welfare businesses have become dependant on this idea that the government will tell them how to run their businesses and they will just do that and no more so they dont get in trouble… And so you relate LESS Federal Government with run away capitalism. The government isnt doing its job where it should and is doing too much in stupid intrusive ways…

IF the government stayed out of the peoples BUSINESS and private lives and steped in fairly and sternly when the rules of the Constitution is broken (and as long as our society isnt just a bunch of evil crazies) then we the people will conduct our business according to the Constitution which means that none of us can harm any of the others… and that will result in us interacting with each other differently rather than relying on the government to tell us how. “How” doesnt matter as long as the Constitution isnt violated… With the system working as it is now… the HOW is all about who you can pay off or how many people can you trick into thinking that they are doing a good thing… Which leads to many of the very violations that the people on the left dont like… ALL abuse of power is going to hurt someone and when that happens those someones will go after the power and then they abuse it also… D….R….D….R back and forth … the middle ground is that the D and R doesnt matter all that much outside of politics and occasional times of war… Instead it is being pushed into everything from fundamentalists taking over the DOJ to people using the power of the government to coerce other people to not smoke…

A less intrusive government that weilds its power on the few focused areas that it was limited to by the founding fathers… we can solve our other problems using different methods that divides the power up into small chunks so it can not be sold off by a few in D.C.

I know your biased mind will find this shocking…

You can tell he got his political points from listening to what the left in America has been saying…

But why is it his religious points sound just like Americas religious right?

Isnt the religious intolerance the part of what Osama said that is the issue with the terrorism? Last I checked we were not at war over better civil rights….

Freddy Thompson, you made no sense. The Left has attacked Bush for his comments about not worrying too much about bin Laden, but then now bin Laden apparently has their tongue as they can’t even muster up their own commentary on his newest video.

The Left wants to have it both ways, they want to downplay bin Laden as a GOP boogeyman, while simultaneously attacking Bush for not worrying enough about him. Hell, some on the Left even believe and state that bin Laden is an agent of the CIA or Bush, and is only there to help the GOP. Yet then they attack Bush for not worrying about him, while they claim he’s a phony!

    Wait, no I don’t.

“Isnt the religious intolerance the part of what Osama said that is the issue with the terrorism? Last I checked we were not at war over better civil rights…”

Of course it is. Which is why I said that the Left should just come out and say, yes, bin Laden is emulating our narrative, but he’s only doing so to put a wedge between the American people, a charade to dress up his actual message – Islam or die.

He could just as easily be telling the truth about some things and those certain things happen to be the same truths the left is telling… however he very obviously is going beyond that and repeating a bunch of details off tv and our news…

The left is correct about many of the things they have been saying about the corrupt people in our government CAUSING the problems we have with people in the middle east. Simple logic shows that if it was purely Islam they would kill every non muslim they can get their hands on … that is obviously not happening… so they have picked out America because in their eyes our actions have wronged them… and because their religion is still part of their day to day lives they use religion as their vehicle for firing people up to get revenge for those perceived wrongs…

As far as christianity goes yes indeed it is a danger to our way of life as long as a large enough number of them try to push ideas like “seperation of church and state is just a myth” … sounds just like what Osama said in this most recent video….

Remember the left is not a bunch of religious nuts… the religious nut Osama is copying their words … not the other way around… instead of attacking the left for making valid points maybe you should ask yourself how Osama is manipulating YOU with those words from the left…

The only way we were able to pull off 9/11 was because we of the right wing stealing the White House for George Bush. had Gore taken his rightful place in office, i would have been forced to call the whole thing off, because he was well aware of where we were and what we were doing. We caught real stroke of luck when the status reports were ignored by the new administration and its token, Condi.

    Comment by DreamCrusher — September 7, 2007 @ 11:04 pm

Ok, I’ll bite. I’ll post more on my extremely influential blog tomorrow when I’ve had time to go over it in depth.

First, I’m not entirely convinced that the person speaking in this video is Usama bin Laden. There’s some debate among Muslim scholars as to whether dyeing of the beard is forbidden or encouraged, and it seems quite illogical that someone as image-conscious and media-savvy as UBL would want his message bogged down by a debate over his appearance.

But let’s just say – for argument’s sake – that it is him, he’s not dead, and he’s voicing some opinions that coincide with opinions held by me and many other liberals.

    So what?

It’s possible to agree on some end goals without supporting their tactics. I find the tactic of terrorism – the use of violence to achieve political aims – abhorrent. I think it it is an awful and barbaric practice that should become a relic of history as soon as possible. Whether it’s practiced by Islamic fundamentalists, anti-globalization demonstrators, indigenous separatists, or Israeli settlers, it’s wrong.

Usama bin Laden, at this point, is a cult leader with a small but still dangerous following. Even most jihadis don’t like him much these days. And the fact remains, whether he was connected with 9/11 or not, that he is a wanted criminal for his role in the USS Cole attack and Embassy bombings.

The fact that he says some things about the corporatocracy and American politics I happen to agree with doesn’t change that. He’s still a wanted criminal and he should still be brought to justice.

  250. DreamCrusher says:

    Gerald,

I agree that there is some wisdom in what the Left has said, and what Osama bin Laden is repeating. That’s not really the issue here. The issue here is that the Left won’t even talk about the video because they’re too cowardly to just admit that bin Laden is copying them. Why the silence? It seems Kos is just as cowardly as the Democrats in the Congress that he attacks for cowering to Bush and the Republicans on Iraq.

Just because Osama bin Laden says something, doesn’t mean it’s wrong. Why doesn’t the Left just say that? What’s the hold-up? I mean, if Osama bin Laden says that 2+2 = 4, does that mean it’s wrong because he said it? No, of course not.

“Simple logic shows that if it was purely Islam they would kill every non muslim they can get their hands on … that is obviously not happening… so they have picked out America because in their eyes our actions have wronged them”

Oh, really. So it’s not because America is the most powerful Western nation in the world? It could easily be argued that England and France wronged the Muslim world far more than the US has ever done. Hell, the European colonial powers can be blamed for most of the problems that have beset the Middle East and Africa for centuries. But are they the main target? No. America is the easiest target because it has been the most active recently in foreign policy, and because it’s the largest target for the jihadis to aim at.

“As far as christianity goes yes indeed it is a danger to our way of life as long as a large enough number of them try to push ideas like “seperation of church and state is just a myth” … sounds just like what Osama said in this most recent video….”

… No shades of gray in your world, I guess. Christianity is a danger to our way of life? What kind of tripe is that? The hard-line Christians don’t have any real power in the US. You often hear about law suits to remove religious symbols from public places, but you never hear about law suits to place them there. Atheism is growing in the United States. The Christians’ power in the US has been continually receding.

How on Earth is this anything like what Osama said? Osama wants all of us to convert to Islam or die, and get rid of democracy. How in the wold can you claim that Christians in the US are doing anything similar? You’re just making a fool of yourself with rank hyperbole.

“Remember the left is not a bunch of religious nuts…”

Religious, no, but they are a cult with their own belief system.

“instead of attacking the left for making valid points maybe you should ask yourself how Osama is manipulating YOU with those words from the left…”

Eh, I’m the one telling the Left how to respond to this, precisely because I recognize that Osama is doing all of this to drive a wedge between the American people. Osama bin Laden doesn’t have the capacity to manipulate me at all, but he apparently has the power to silence the entire Left blogosphere – DailyKos still hasn’t mentioned his video.

  251. toasterhead says:

That’s not his actual message. “Islam or die” is not the message of Islam and never has been. At least as far as Judaism and Christianity are concerned. The “Islam or die” message is a product of Protestant propaganda.

  253. DreamCrusher says:

    toasterhead,

Exactly, so why don’t DailyKos and the rest just say what you said? What are they afraid of? Why are they being complete wussies and not even commenting on it as if the biggest news of the day hasn’t even occurred?

That’s all I’m asking. I don’t disagree with a number of things bin Laden said. Even an evil man can speak great truths. In fact, it’s an awesome propaganda tool to speak great truths while you nuzzle in your own diabolical propaganda.

It’s like saying, all men are created equal, now let’s kill all Christians. Everyone agrees with the former, and naive idiots will go on with the latter if they aren’t paying attention. Usually people will listen to someone they think they agree with, and take on other things they say without even thinking about it.

As for speculation about whether or not it’s bin Laden, please. Osama bin Laden has violated tons of Islamic customs and laws, why would he balk at dyeing his beard to look more virile? That’s like saying a picture of bin Laden can’t be him because he’s wearing a gold ring. Or like saying that a pastor can’t possibly be gay because he’s a pastor.

  254. ronjazz says:

who cares about his video? the real question is, why is he still making videos? Y*ou’ve mad a huge issue about OBL’s video and “the Left’s” lack of response. i, for one, haven’t seen it, and don’t consider it necessary to see, since he is a murderous criminal that should have been caught and prosecuted as a first priority after 9/11. this is more of your bullshit deflection away from the issue of the Right’s inability to govern, to follow through, to plan, to do anything except fill their pockets with taxpayer dollars. Your point is pointless, and your raving about kos or anyone else not commenting on a video that really means nothing, may be fake, and is made by the guy that is America’s #1 enemy, according the THE RIGHT, is prrof of your pointlessness. This is so transparently typical of the lack of responsibility that the Right takes for its own failures, and the onlu defense it finds is another straw man, a meaningless video, how scary. Pansies and pantywaists, the cult of the coward, the Right wing. Give it up already. Get the guy, and jail him or kill him. Stop using him as your scary under-the-bed monster.

  255. DreamCrusher says:

That’s not his actual message. “Islam or die” is not the message of Islam and never has been.

Eh, yes, that is his message. His message is not that of Islam, but of fundamentalist extremist Islam. Although the Koran doesn’t exactly give anyone great confidence that that isn’t the message Mohammed wanted to peddle. Muslims are not allowed to be friends with non-Muslims, lest they be considered non-Muslims themselves.

I dont go to KOS or many of the openly 100% democrat all the time blogs… but if that is what they are doing then it is rediculous… stick with the truth…the whole truth… or else what does that say about everything else you tell me? … I guess fear of being called a cut and runner doesnt only prevail in D.C.?

    Why America?

    1) America went into Saudi Arabia… THAT is what set off Osama the most.

    2) America is the primary reason there is an Israel. All the arabs have held that against us for a long time… and this is probably the #1 tool the Osama has to convince others to join him. America doesnt act fairly and so they exploit that.

    3) And now Iraq is helping do the same thing #2 above is doing to us.

    4) Overthrow of Iran, being a bad actor in the Iran/Iraq war, CIA working with various governments in ME to torture and various other humiliations and violations…. because of these types of things Osama can simply say, “Dont you feel like dogs?! under the boot of America?…. Are you men or dogs? Do you not believe Allah is on your side?” ….

We have given many arabs and reason to hate us… and then when Osama got all fired up he used that against us. Islam is just the communication tool he and others like Osama use to get their angry fellows to join them in violence.

No messianic dark magic… nothing like that… simple human nature…

    Lastly,

Osama said that the seperation of church and state is a violation in our christians duty to God.

Certain christians in this country who HAVE gotten themselves into many places of power for the purpuse of using that power to help make America a more “Godly” nation ALSO say that the seperation of church and state is a violation in Americas duty to God. That mentallity (as explained in detail in the writings of many founding fathers) will take away peoples freedoms just as quickly as will a dictator… and christianity has shown this to be true… though in their defense… they have gotten much less violent over the last 200 years… maybe Seperation of Church and State helped with that…

  257. DreamCrusher says:

    ronjazz,

You embody the hypocrisy I’m talking about on the Left. Who cares, you say. Exactly. But then Think Progress attacks Fred Thompson for saying that OBL is just symbolic, while they basically say, “Who cares?” themselves by not commenting on the video.

I think its significant that the man who was behind the murder of thousands of Americans has now released a new video after not having done so for three years. There’s ample room just based on that to comment on what this means, and what the significance of that is.

    Another example of hypocrisy:

“is made by the guy that is America’s #1 enemy, according the THE RIGHT”

Ah, so he’s only important according to the Right, yet the Democrats constantly harp about how we need to get out of Iraq and go after bin Laden more in Afghanistan. I remember John Kerry saying we took our eye off the ball by going to Iraq. And I remember Think Progress and the rest agreeing with these sentiments. But then you, and they, simultaneously pretend that OBL doesn’t really matter that much anyway.

So I ask, again, which is it?

Is OBL important enough that we need to get out of Iraq to put resources into finding him and getting him? Or is he just a GOP boogeyman?

“Get the guy, and jail him or kill him. Stop using him as your scary under-the-bed monster.”

Eh, OBL is the one who put out the video, not the GOP. And here you want us to get him, but also say he’s just a boogeyman.

You’ve got your logic going in circles, which is exactly what I’m pointing out.

  258. Gerald Gibson says:

I think what he is saying is that the GOP keeps using Osama and 911 to get things they want that have nothing to do with Osama and 911 like a war in Iraq and too much power over the government even to the point of violating the Constitution.

Why not just kill Osama and stop using him as a way to get your way here in America. Seemed pretty clear to me… seems you are intent on twisting peoples words. What next strawman arguments?

  259. DreamCrusher says:

    Gerald,

    1. Saudi Arabia asked us to come protect them. We were there with the blessing of the royal family. Was our presence there really the reason bin Laden got mad at us, or was it because the Saudi royal family hurt his ego by not letting him defend his country from Saddam, as he had helped defend Afghanistan against the USSR? Were we wrong to protect Saudi Arabia from Saddam Hussein?

    2. Israel was created by the UN. Although the US is one of the biggest supporters of Israel, most of Europe also does so. It was the French who gave Israel nuclear weapons. You’ll notice that Osama bin Laden speaks relatively little, or not at all, about Israel in the newest video. Why? Are we wrong to help Israel protect itself from countries whom have attacked them numerous times before?

    3. Yes, obviously letting democracy get a foothold in the Muslim world is unpopular in Osama bin Laden land. Tell it on a mountain.

    4. I don’t think I can remember bin Laden, at least recently, taking up the grievances of Iran. Perhaps mostly because they are Shiites, and not all too enthused about bin Laden’s brand of extremist Islam. Yet as I said, other world powers have messed up the Middle East far more than the US ever did. Yet the US is the main target. Because the US is the largest Western target there is.

As for the creep of the Church into the State, we’ve gotten what, God on our money and in our pledge of allegiance? Wow. Scary. Call me when they start mandating church on Sundays and force us to give money to the pastors. Then we’ll be starting to get an inch of the way to credibly comparing the Christians in the US to the Taliban and Osama bin Laden’s goals.

  260. DreamCrusher says:

    Gerald,

Terrorists were rounded up in Norway, Germany, and Denmark just recently. These countries have all passed stricter terrorism laws, precisely to deal with the real threat of terrorism. Are all of them also using 911 and OBL to “get what they want”? Or are they acting on a real threat?

Is President Bush using 911 to get the power to get warrantless surveillance, or he is using warrantless surveillance because he doesn’t want another 911? You seem to be switching around the cause and effect because you deem Bush to be evil.

Sure, kill Osama bin Laden, what’s so hard with that? Clinton didn’t manage it under his tenure. Bush hasn’t been able to do it so far either. It’s friggin easy, right? Just unilaterally invade Pakistan and find the guy, right? Oh wait, that’s precisely the type of thing the Left opposes. Hmmm. Hypocrisy again? Ah yes.

If it’s so friggin easy, why doesn’t any of you smart asses go do it?

Then its significance is that they want to distract from their current failures, or their future plans to make more war. did OBL make it? then the significance is obvious; the republican administration has failed miserably. No discussion of that is even needed; 70% of Americans are well aware of the massive Bush failures. did some other fake make it? Then it has no significance. it is a Bushco production, in my opinion, and is meangless and a waste of time to even consider it. it’s just another piece of propaganda, no matter who is responsible for it. You don’t know what you’re talking about, and your opinions are worthless and foolish, based on twisted, unthinking obeisance to a corrupt, bankrupt philosophy. Hahaha. These clowns are unbelievably predictable.

  263. Gerald Gibson says:

    1. Saudi Arabia asked us to come protect them.

The people of Saudi Arabia are openly preached to that they will one day invade Israel.. kill the men.. and take their women… The Royals are not the people… Osama wanted to be the big hero and protect Saudi Arabia… the Royals are just as much to blame in Osamas eyes as is America… read the news…

    2. Israel was created by the UN.

Helping protect Israel is not the issue… creating Israel in the first place when the arabs let it be known they felt violated by this action that could only have happened if not backed by Truman… also allowing Israel to get away with all kinds of things and we all know what they are or else we should… but then make a big deal of the arabs doing the same type of crap… America should act as an honest broker for BOTH sides then Israel wouldnt be such a big point for Terrorists to use to convince more to join them…

    3. Yes, obviously letting democracy get a foothold in the Muslim world is unpopular in Osama bin Laden land. Tell it on a mountain.

Who actually believes this old propaganda any more? Our actions have lead to how many Iraqi familys that have been shattered by dead parents, children, etc? How hard do you think it will be for a terrorist to convince an Iraq that because of his dead mother, father, sister, grandpa, and two of his brothers that he should strap on this belt of explosives and go kill Americans?

    4….

It does not matter is Osama personally cares about the Iranians… he convinces people to join him by playing on their perceived grievences WHAT EVER THEY MAY BE towards America… and if the grievences are actually based on real American actions then it makes it much easier for them to fall for Osamas message…

As far as the christianity thing goes… if it gets to the point where they are ordering Sunday church visits then it is too late… did you not read about them pumping in “loyal righties” into the DOJ? The christian religion is on the INSIDE…. Islam is not… if arabs EVER get close to being a real danger to our way of life we will treat them like we did the soviets and really start pointing the nukes… but they simply dont have that power and not even close… These christians think the same way about our way of life as does Osama… and they are in our government… and they are easily manipulated… hell Osama can make them start chanting holy war with one well placed bomb…

Invade Pakistan? Have we tried sending in our robot scouts? How about special forces? How about everything short of invading? I dont believe so. What kind of pressure have we put on Pakistan? We are talking about 911 right? The thing that changed everything…except where Pakistan is concerned … which happens to be where Osama is … how convenient… We will invade Iraq… had nothing to do with 911 … but we put what pressure on Pakistan? We take what actions in Pakistan short of invading? What of Saudi Arabia? Anything we can do to “encourage” them to deliver? What if we spent all those billions on getting us off Saudi Oil…instead of in Iraq… would they listen then?

Taking actions against terrorists is not the same thing as having your own agenda and using terrorism to get those agendas completed even though they do not apply to terrorism…

Sure. Then again, you just may not understand that what we are doing has everything to do with defeating terrorism, although they are long-term plans that will take decades to accomplish.

Iraq was something that the bushies wanted LONG before 911… its just as simple as that… has nothing to do with bush being evil.

Unfortunately, you’ve been brainwashed by the liberal propaganda on this one. The USG has been wanting to snuff out Saddam since at least 1990. Democrats. Republicans. Independents. For obvious reasons. This has nothing to do with Bush. Only gullible fools believe that.

Invade Pakistan? Have we tried sending in our robot scouts? How about special forces?

That IS invading Pakistan, also. That would be illegally violating the sovereignty of Pakistan, no? I thought that was a liberal no-no?

How about everything short of invading?

All of which would also violate Pakistan’s sovereignty and be illegal according to the Liberal Gospel?

Look, we’re friends with Musharraf. He has nukes. We don’t want Pakistan being run over by jihadis. We do as he wants. Period. We can’t afford to be on bad terms with Musharraf.

The thing that changed everything…except where Pakistan is concerned … which happens to be where Osama is … how convenient…

Yes, perhaps that’s why Osama chose to be there? Because he knows that Musharraf will get the noose if he lets the US do as they please within his country? Not to mention that he hangs out in the areas where the Pakistani government has no clout? Convenient, you bet, for Osama bin Laden. It’s all logical if you just take off the conspiracy theory Bush-hating goggles for just one second.

We will invade Iraq… had nothing to do with 911 … but we put what pressure on Pakistan?

Yeah, let’s become enemies with a country that has nukes which also has a border dispute with its neighbor, who has nukes, who combined have over a billion people in population. Sounds like a great idea! We should have made you president. I mean, it’s not like all those Pakistanis and Indians and other folks down there need to be alive or anything! Let’s just do things without thinking!

I mean, did you even think at all before writing that? We can’t put pressure on Pakistan. We can’t put pressure on Saudi Arabia. They have us both by the balls. Pakistan because they have nukes. The Saudis because they have the sweet, sweet oil we need.

Hmmm. Why’d we invade Iraq again? Ah.. I don’t know… one reason could be to prop up a moderate state in the region that has lots of oil that could modernize its oil infrastructure and put more oil on the market so we are less dependent on Saudi Arabia and thus allow us to put pressure on them…

Nah, that would be a silly idea! Let’s just stay dependent on Saudi Arabia, and invade Pakistan! More fun for everyone.

We take what actions in Pakistan short of invading? What of Saudi Arabia? Anything we can do to “encourage” them to deliver? What if we spent all those billions on getting us off Saudi Oil…instead of in Iraq… would they listen then?

Same reason we didn’t invade North Korea, genius. Think about it for at least a few seconds. Spent billions on getting off Saudi oil? Really, like how? We can create oil from money? Drill in Alaska? Ah wait, people like you oppose that. Hmmm. Create ten billion solar panels and put them all over the US, cut down forest to place them all?

I’m all ears. Give us your plan to spend $300B and wean us off Saudi Arabian oil. Love to hear it.

There appears to be no real attempt to get Osama but a hell of lot of action going on for agendas that were set in place long before 911… its like you guys just use 911 and dont do anything about it…

Let’s go through this slowly, again. Osama is in Pakistan. Pakistan has nukes. Pakistan’s leader doesn’t want us sneaking around in his country. We can’t afford to step on his toes, because he has nukes, and because any misstep there may cause less moderate people to take out Musharraf.

But to you, getting Osama is all easy cheese. That’s because you don’t think about all the details and the reasons why we haven’t been able to get him.

And most people here at Think Progress think that getting Osama bin Laden is pointless anyways, which is probably true. Either that, or like ronjazz, they think he’s a fake created by the CIA that is used to prop up the GOP.

I cannot belive that I live in a country (USA) where the people are so stupid and gulliable that they will believe anything without the slightest fact checking!

First it was the fake “fat” Osama tape the criminals in the government who were behind 9-11, that was declaed “real”.

Last it was the fake “dyed curly beard” Osama tape that the criminals
in the government who were behind 9-11, that was declared “real”.

If my countrymen has the smallest bit of “critical thinking skills”, they would understand what it means when the people in the government declare an OBVIOUS fake tape real!

Why is this administration avoiding accountability? 3,000 dead and you trolls have no problem with the mastermind of these killings roaming freely around? I think it sums up you and your party nicely. Thanks for showing us that you all can sink even lower!
PS- You still haven’t learned the lessons of a post 911 world when you cut and run from Afghanistan to invade Iraq!

  278. Obsolete says:

As far as invading or attacking Pakistan, remember it was Bush who said he would go after countries that harbor terrorists. He should explain his change of mind. It might very well be valid, but he shouldn’t get a free pass on flip-flopping on something as important as justice for 9/11.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but during all those years and administrations, Bush is the one who actually DID invade Iraq. How can you claim it has nothing to do with him?

Don’t we have special forces in Pakistan? I thought we had people working with the Pakistani military and ISI in the NWFP

Hey look! I’m posting even when I’m not here!

Really now, when would I actually say that “failure is actually a symbol of the GWB Admin.”? I don’t believe the Bush administration has failed in the war on terror. We have not had a terrorist attack on U.S. soil since the war on terror began. Looks like success to me.

As far as OBL being a “symbol”. I would have to agree, since he hasn’t done anything but make public relations tapes since 9/11. And if he is currently a symbol, it is only because the United States, through our war on terror, and our disruption of Al-Quada, has relegated him to a mere symbol.

Sounds like more success for the Bush Administration.

Actually, I think OBL is in line to head up the Democrat Party when Howard Dean leaves….that ought to make you libs happy, eh?

  286. Badger says:

Question #1. Does Bin Laden want America to get out of Iraq?
Terrorism experts agree that the best recruiting tool for Al Qaeda is the Iraq War. America is spending billions of borrowed dollars and losing American troops daily. Recruiting goals are not being met.The coalition of the willing has all but dissappeared….world opinion is almost universally against the Iraq war.
Question #2 If Bin Laden really wants us to stay mired in Iraq, What would he say???

We have also not had a major earthquake, and shark attacks are down considerably. And al-Qa’ida has reconstituted itself to “pre-2001 strength,” according to the last NIE. Do you credit the Bush administration for these things as well?

And speaking of failure – I just wanted to remind everyone that Salem bin Laden, Usama’s half-brother, was an investor in Arbusto, G.W. Bush’s failed oil company.
