No senator voted with Bush more than Hagel did. Good riddance. Check his voting records and then tell me how anti-war he is.

This is not rats deserting a sinking ship--this is Kansans headed for the storm cellar.

They've read the polls. They know the large majority wants this disastrous military adventure--and they want their health care back and their good jobs back.

It's whirlwind time, and these guys know it.

Hagel had his flaws as aBushie in many ways but he stood tall on opposing the Iraq occupation. He is one a of a very few real non-Chickenhawks, as he is a VN Vet.

I just hope that very conservative state can elect a decent replacement.

I find this 'retirement' a little odd. Consider this. Senator Chuck Hagel is directly tied to the E Voting Scandal and perhaps even in the sub prime market.

Hagel sits on the Board of Directors of a holding company called McCarthy Group. They claim to be an investment firm with a diverse portfolio upwards of 1 billion dollars. Anyways, here is the kicker.

McCarthy Group owns ES & S and Diebold. Both highly controversial Evoting machines. He also I believe was one of their CEO's when they were just starting. Even more damning both those companies were created by 2 brothers who are heavy GOP supporters. Oh...all of these companies either started in or currently based out of Omaha, NE.

-Senator Charles Hagel, a Nebraska Republican, has a controlling financial stake in the McCarthy Group, which in turn owns ES&S. Nebraska voters cast their votes on ES&S DREs. Further, Michael McCarthy, chairman of the McCarthy Group, served as Hagel's campaign treasurer from 1999 until 2002.

-Leaders of the nation's two largest DRE manufacturers, Diebold and ES&S, are a pair of brothers. Bob Urosevich is president of Diebold's election system division, while Todd Urosevich is a vice-president of ES&S. Stephen Miller, 9/8/04

And a bit of Hear ye! Hear ye!

Senator Chuck Hagel made up his mind.

He won’t seek re-election next year, or make a run for the White House. The two-term Republican won’t run for anything else, either.

will be left holding the bag on a totally dysfunctional government filled with incompetents at every level, an astronomical national debt, a housing and credit crisis bringing the economy to its knees, oil prices of over $100/barrel, a military in ruins and controlled by a cult of crazed Christian militants, and a war in the Middle East.

At least the Dems have a history of success with fixing what the Pukes f*ck up.

∞Ω - maybe he already has. Maybe Hagel has finally had enough. Maybe he plans to oppose the continuation of the surge and will support efforts to impose a deadline for the withdrawal of American troops. If he does any of this, his career with the Republican party is probably over, and he knows it. Thanks to Sean for the link to that video, and to Plear, I can only assume you are a Republican - of course, no one you know would like him.

screwbush - it sounds similar to what FDR inherited from hoover...
it's going to take some FDR-like programs to turn US around again...

∞Ω - THAT would be very cool indeed... what could he lose?
the gains would be substantial...

This one is very puzzling to me. I can understand Warner's retirement, as he's getting pretty old. I can understand Hastert's retirement, as he was involved in covering up Mark Foley's activities with the pages over the years. Hagel has a very conservative voting record but has been critical of the Iraq war. I would think he would have a good chance of getting re-elected in his state. Unless there's something on the horizon regarding corruption or sexual activity or, on the other hand, illness in his family, I don't understand this. If it's just that he's gotten tired of politics, then I applaud his decision to depart, as there are too many long-time career parasites in government and we new blood. Could Hagel possibly be that one Senator Larry Flynt was hinting at, with his name on the DC Madam's list?

This one is very puzzling to me. I can understand Warner’s retirement, as he’s getting pretty old. I can understand Hastert’s retirement, as he was involved in covering up Mark Foley’s activities with the pages over the years. Hagel has a very conservative voting record but has been critical of the Iraq war. I would think he would have a good chance of getting re-elected in his state. Unless there’s something on the horizon regarding corruption or sexual activity or, on the other hand, illness in his family, I don’t understand this. If it’s just that he’s gotten tired of politics, then I applaud his decision to depart, as there are too many long-time career parasites in government and we new blood. Could Hagel possibly be that one Senator Larry Flynt was hinting at, with his name on the DC Madam’s list?

One of the vids I saw that got me to like Hagel. Too bad he didn't keep it up... for some reason it seems like he got quiet after a while.

re: #4 by bilbogaggins,

Have you considered they're all leaving so that the newly elected Dems of 2008 -- president and both houses of congress -- will be left holding the bag on a totally dysfunctional government filled with incompetents at every level, an astronomical national debt, a housing and credit crisis bringing the economy to its knees, oil prices of over $100/barrel, a military in ruins and controlled by a cult of crazed Christian militants, and a war in the Middle East.

And this list is just the highlights of what we get after 8 years of GOPers having a feeding frenzy. After 2008 the government will be full of Dems and they will be standing in the biggest pile of Poo that this nation, or any nation, has ever seen.
