ThinkFast: September 10, 2007

“President Bush is expected to name an attorney general soon – perhaps this week. The five finalists: Michael Mukasey, Theodore B. (Ted) Olson, Laurence H. Silberman, George J. Terwilliger and Larry D. Thompson.” Olson appears to be emerging as the frontrunner.

60 percent: Americans who say we “should set a timetable to withdraw forces ‘and stick to that timetable regardless of what is going on in Iraq.’”

The White House’s decision to send Rosh Hashanah greetings a week early elicited “a quizzical reaction around town among the president’s Jewish friends and supporters.” Former RNC chairman Ken Mehlman, who, like White House chief of staff Josh Bolten, is Jewish, “sent Bolten an e-mail asking why the White House had seemingly flubbed the date.”

Barry Jackson, one of Karl Rove’s key replacements in the White House, is seen as a “highly partisan go-getter.” An acquaintance of Jackson’s said he isn’t interested “‘let’s get along’ kind of stuff.”

The Pentagon is preparing to build its first base for U.S. forces near the Iraqi-Iranian border, a major new effort to curb the flow of advanced Iranian weaponry to Shiite militants across Iraq. “The base will be located about four miles from the Iranian border and will be used for at least two years.”

In a new study of the neurobiology of politics, “scientists have found that liberals tolerate ambiguity and conflict better than conservatives because of how their brains work. ” The study found that “liberals were 4.9 times as likely as conservatives to show activity in the brain circuits that deal with conflicts.”

“US regulators will on Monday present results of a year-long inquiry into investment scams that are fleecing retirees out of their life savings. The Securities and Exchange Commission will report on the growing phenomenon of ‘free lunch’ seminars that financial advisers offer to older people.”

9/11 Commission co-chairs Thomas Kean and Lee Hamilton write: “Two years ago, we and our colleagues issued a report card assessing the U.S. government’s progress on the bipartisan recommendations in the 9/11 commission report. We concluded that the nation was not safe enough. Our judgment remains the same today: We still lack a sense of urgency in the face of grave danger.”

And finally: At an event promoting children’s health insurance legislation, Rep. John Dingell (D-MI) “noted that the bill would insure 12 million more kids and pointed out that President Bush ‘used to be for this.’” “But let me tell you something about him,” Dingell continued. “I knew him before he was a virgin.” Dingell provided no further context for his “virgin” comment.

What did we miss? Let us know in the comments section.

Melhman asked Bolton why the whitehouse flubbed the date. This kind of begs the question as to what all the trolls who said this was standard procedure and we were just being nit-picking libs will say now. Maybe they’ll wonder why melman and bolton hate bush so much?

  2. bilbogaggins says:

60 percent: Americans who say we “should set a timetable to withdraw forces ‘and stick to that timetable regardless of what is going on in Iraq.’”

Well, the Democrats have the way to do this. All they need to do is to turn the tables on the Rethugs and tell Bush that they will filibuster any appropriations bill that comes there way without a timetable for withdrawing troops. Now only if they have the spine to do it.

  3. Zimzone says:

“liberals were 4.9 times as likely as conservatives to show activity in the brain circuits that deal with conflicts.”

And 490 times more likely to understand how to end conflict…

    Liberals seek to problem solve.
Conservatives, by their fear and inaction, create the problems.

uh oh, now Jake D. & Ken are gonna have a lover’s spat.

  6. bilbogaggins says:

President Bush is expected to name an attorney general soon

The Democrats now have the “perfect storm” within which they can finally investigate the US Attorney firings. They need to tell Bush that they will not approve a new AG until such time as they have concluded their investigation into the US Attorney firings. That will mean if Bush wants a new AG, he will have to withdraw his EP’s and tell his minions to honor subpoenas.

Hopefully the Democrats grew a spine while on vacation.

” The study found that “liberals were 4.9 times as likely as conservatives to show activity in the brain circuits that deal with conflicts.” ”

Bush can’t even resolve the conflict of wanting to hear the end of “My Pet Goat” and taking responsible action while our country is attacked. Guess that makes him uber-conservative.

  8. Polly Mathe says:

“But let me tell you something about him,” Dingell continued. “I knew him before he was a virgin.” Dingell provided no further context for his “virgin” comment.

It will be interesting to follow Dingell on this, I have actually heard him speak in person, and he is a very intelligent and articulate man.

The implied comment to me is clear, he knew of George as the crude, mean and nasty little boy he was before being packaged, promoted and stuffed down Americas throat.

How’s that any different than when Karl Rove was there? Bush does not hire people who are interested in “getting along”, he hires people who say “yes master, how high should I jump”.

US regulators will on Monday present results of a year-long inquiry into investment scams that are fleecing retirees out of their life savings.

They will “present the results of their findings”, but they won’t do anything to stop the scams. Because it is Friends of Bush who are getting rich off of scamming old people out of their life savings.

If they know this is happening, why don’t they do something to stop it rather than doing a year-long inquiry?

  21. bilbogaggins says:

The study found that “liberals were 4.9 times as likely as conservatives to show activity in the brain circuits that deal with conflicts.

That is because they are 4.9 times as likely to have brain circuits that work.

Conservatives set their brain circuits on “yes master” and go through life allowing their “authority figures” to tell them what to think and how to act. Read John Dean’s Conservatives without Conscience. It is a real eye-opener.

  22. DRxJ says:

The study found that “liberals were 4.9 times as likely as conservatives to show activity in the brain circuits that deal with conflicts.”

I think that’s because “liberals” are able to analyze the situation, to determine what the best course of action.
“conservatives” on the other hand, wait to be told what to do. Their flight or fight syndrome usually consists of :
    a) Follow whatever Rush or Hannity say, even if morally conflicted
    b) Sending someone else to do the dirty work.

Of course, this is just my humble opinion, and thus have no facts or links to back it up.
But, at least I have the ballz to state that, unlike certain trolls here!

I’m just making a guess here, but I suspect Dingell was paraphrasing Oscar Levant’s famous comment about Doris Day (”I knew Doris Day before she was a virgin”), poking a slight jab at her reinvention as an ingenue. Dingell was probably drawing a parallel to a similar reinvention.

Should we expect that now that the Senate Judiciary Select is in the hands of the Dems, this will be a transparent hearing? Maybe Leahy of Vermont would finally stop writing letters and act?

Bush Regime Wants To Attack Iran
    10th of September 2007
    by Jay Randal

The Bush Regime’s occupation of Iraq has turned into the most horrendous debacle in entire US history, but now Bush and Cheney desire to attack Iran which could ignite World War III, plus lead to Waterloo for Bush.

Napoleon the Emperor of France believed that Russia could be conquered, by his vast superior military, but instead he lost his entire army upon retreat from old Moscow, which led to his eventual defeat at Waterloo.

Historians all agree that when Adolf Hitler attacked Soviet Union he sealed his own demise, especially after the military debacle at Stalingrad, so German soldiers were forced into full retreat and pushed back to Berlin.

President George W. Bush believes that Iran could be defeated easily, but the Iranians are brave people who will resist to the death like the Russians, plus they can counterattack with suicide hordes of troops into Iraq.

Dubya, like Napoleon and Hitler, could lose his entire army in the Middle East, therefore setting himself up for a Waterloo defeat and the end of the US Empire!

(Jay Randal, political activist and writer in Georgia, USA.)

    Here is the news:

Rumsfeld calls Afghanistan ‘a big success’

Some native speakers of Arabic think the 2006 speech was written in English and translated into Arabic.

    http://www.pbs.org/newshour/bb/terrorism/jan-june06/osa...

MAMOUN FANDY: Right, but this particular tape is not terribly inspiring, just looking at the language of it. This is the first tape of bin Laden that has no single verse from the Koran. It does not have the flowery language of Arabic.

It seems to me that it is written in English first, and then translated into Arabic. It is very western style of tape. It is not very characteristic of bin Laden, at least it tells me that the non-Arabic speaking within the al-Qaida network are taking over the organization –

JIM LEHRER: You mean he didn’t write this is what you are suggesting?

MAMOUN FANDY: The Arabic speakers in al-Qaida, the parts that are coming from the Arab world, are losing to the non-Arabic speaker, so it’s really becoming more of a South Asian organization, rather than an Arab organization.

I still have a hard time believing that Ted Olson would have anything to do with the Bush administration, especially since it was the inaction on the part of the Iraq-obsessed Bush administration before the 9/11 attacks in 2001 that led to Ted Olson’s wife, Barbara, dying on one of the hijacked airplanes.

Remember, the Bush administration before 9/11 held only ONE cabinet-level counter-terrorism principals meeting (ONE WEEK before the 9/11 attacks)…as compared to the countless cabinet-level prinicpals meetings held in the first eight months of the Bush administration to discuss their planned attack against Iraq.

Oh well, I guess blind partisan party loyalty trumps everything, including remaining buddies with those in the Bush administration who directly contributed to getting their wife killed.
