Lieberman Decries ‘Terrible, Partisan, Political Sniping,’ Then Rocks Out With Hannity, Coulter

On Fox News this morning, Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-CT) used a moment of silence commemorating 9/11 to decry the “terrible, partisan political sniping” that he says ruined the “unity that we felt after September 11″:

Let me just say in response to the moment of silence we just were part of, that that unity that we felt after September 11, we have to find a way to get it back because we’ve descended into terrible, partisan political sniping.

Watch it:

[flv http://video.thinkprogress.org/2007/09/LiebermanUnity.320.240.flv]

Lieberman’s exhaltation that “we have to find a way to get” America’s post-9/11 unity “back” is undermined by his plans for later this evening, when he mingles with some of the most divisive personalities in America today at Sean Hannity’s “Freedom Concert.”

Attending the concert along with the Connecticut Senator are some of the guiltiest culprits of the “terrible, partisan political sniping” that Lieberman professes to decry: Ann Coulter, Oliver North, Rudy Giuliani, Newt Gingrich, and Hannity himself.

Here are just a few examples of their “terrible…sniping”:

Coulter: The media is “treasoness” and “the Democrats, they want us to lose.” [9/10/07]

North: “If we elect” a Democratic “Congress…it will be nuclear weapons in the hands of fanatics.” [8/31/06]

Giuliani: Democrats are “the party of losers” [7/26/07]

Gingrich: “Yes,” Bush administration critics are similar “to those who enabled Hitler” [9/1/06]

Hannity: Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) is “a propaganda minister for our enemies.” [4/24/07]

Hannity’s “Freedom Concerts” support a good cause by helping to fund education for the children of dead or disabled soldiers. But the political message underlying the shows, which are embodied by one of the most aggressively partisan personalities on TV and radio, is far from the unifying message Lieberman says he desires.

UPDATE: Last week, Lieberman told Hannity that he “can’t wait” for the concert.

UPDATE II: At TPM Election Central, Greg Sargent notes that Ann Coulter has “repeatedly bashed the 9/11 widows, calling them ’self-obsessed’ and accusing them of ‘enjoying their husband’s deaths.’

Transcript:

SEN. JOE LIEBERMAN (I-CT): Megyn, let me just say in response to the moment of silence we just were part of, that that unity that we felt after September 11, we have to find a way to get it back because we’ve descended into terrible, partisan political sniping. The fact is, al Qaeda, the al Qaeda that attacked us on 9/11 six years ago today, the al Qaeda that we’re fighting in Iraq today, they don’t distinguish between Republicans or Democrats. They hate all Americans. They want to kill us all. And that’s why it’s so important we complete the mission in Iraq successfully.

I agree, Joe! You resign, hide and never show your face again, we’ll get someone intelligent compassionate and diplomatic in your seat, and let the healing begin!

So I guess Lieberman wants another 9/11…

Well, I for one refuse to believe Lieberman a hypocrite!

Fox network is not the place to talk about ‘unity’ non partisan ,and sniping.
Lieberrman is a joke when he goes to Fox wondering and qustioning about issues like unity, political sniping that has ruined the country..etc..etc.

That’s what Fox do all day…being partisan on all issues. What is Lieberman doing going there, chatting with Hannity and Coulter who mastered the art of division and political sniping.

I’m a moveon member and I fully support their (our) ad. Bush and Bush supporters should be ashamed that 6years after 9/11, Bin Laden walks free while the Iraqi people suffer. Furthermore the Bushies should be embarrassed they chose this September day to have their bs little report given to Congress.

  13. stopthecons says:

yeah, right lierbman. oppose the war and you’re doing nothing other than “political sniping” Stand up against the killing and you’re “with the terrorists”. Resist the power of the bush administration and you obviously “hate america”

or whatever other garbage these people like to spew – it’s the same thing over and over. Dissent is bad, very bad.

But, the reality is quite different. It’s joe lieberman and the rest of the murderers in this government that act with complete hatred for America and everything it stands for.

They’re willing to throw it all away to quench their thirst for power, profits and war.

That’s my rant. Read on if you’d like:

  28. Peter C says:

Forgive me, but I don’t really remember universal bi-partisan ship after 9/11.

What I remember was unprecedented cooperation by Democrats and continued partisan behavior from Republicans who used the cooperation they received from the Democrats to push-through Bush’s radical right-wing agenda.

The people who now complain about MoveOn’s “Betrayus” ad are on the same team as those who morphed a photo of Max Cleland into Osama bin Laden, back when Democrats were working hard to cooperate.

There is an insidious double standard at work here. Democrats are expected to be cooperative and work in a bipartisan manner. Republicans can smear and distort all they like without media criticism (and indeed with coverage which legitimizes their attacks with “he said/she said” reporting which makes no independant analysis of the merits of either argument).

The MoveOn ad made assertions, but backed them up with evidence. This evidence has not been challeged. The Max Cleland smear offered no evidence, and that fact was also not challenged by the media.

The MoveOn ad assumed that the American people want and deserve the truth about the situation in Iraq. It questioned whether we’d get it from the General saying that if he continued like his early pronouncements indicated, his lies would be a betrayal. He did, and they were.

Lieberman can whine all he wants; he’s lied to us and we won’t believe him anymore either. We know where he stands.

US senators urge ‘diplomatic surge’ in Iraq

    http://www.guardian.co.uk/Iraq/Story/0,,2166918,00.html

Senior Republicans and Democrats today urged the Bush administration to launch a “diplomatic surge” instead of a military one as they condemned the lack of progress in the Iraq war.
On the second day of testimony by the commander of US forces in Iraq, General David Petraeus, senators including a number of presidential hopefuls began giving their reactions to the general’s assessment of the “surge” strategy that began in February.

Senator Barack Obama, the most serious challenger to the Democratic frontrunner, Hillary Clinton, criticised the holding of the hearing on the sixth anniversary of the September 11 attacks, saying it perpetuated the notion of a link between Iraq and those atrocities.

Describing the Iraq war as a “disastrous foreign policy mistake”, Mr Obama voiced scepticism of the claims of success for the surge.

“The surge has had some impact but I would argue that the impact has been relatively modest, given the investment,” Mr Obama said, adding that the success in Anbar province, where Sunni tribes have turned against al-Qaida, had nothing to do with the surge.

“What we haven’t seen is significant disarming of the militias,” he said. “We haven’t seen any significant improvement in central government performance.”

In his opening statement, another Democratic presidential challenger, Joseph Biden, said: “It’s time to turn the corner, stop the surge, and bring the troops homes. We need a diplomatic surge not a military one.”

Mr Biden, the chairman of the Senate foreign relations committee, called for the United Nations to be brought in to help resolve the crisis in Iraq.

He said the US could still “leave Iraq without leaving a civil war or a regional war”. But he called for a federal state in Iraq to help achieve a settlement between Shias and Sunnis. “Iraq cannot be governed from the centre,” he said.

He characterised the surge as a “stopgap to delay chaos”.

Some of Mr Biden’s arguments were echoed by the senior Republican on the committee, Richard Lugar. He called for “robust regional diplomacy” in Iraq and said it was “not enough for the administration to counsel patience”.

“The surge must not be an excuse for failing to prepare for the next phase of our involvement in Iraq, whether that is partial withdrawal, a gradual redeployment or some other option,” Mr Lugar said.

Chris Dodd, another Democrat aiming for the presidency, expressed incredulity at claims that progress was being achieved in Iraq.

“We have been begging that leadership [the Iraqi government] to get their act together. And yet now, four and half years later, there’s no indication that they are any closer to that.”

John Kerry, the defeated Democratic presidential candidate in 2004, compared Gen Petraeus to General William Westmoreland, who gave an upbeat assessment of the Vietnam war in 1967.

“Not since Westmoreland has a general played such a role in national strategy,” Mr Kerry said.

Who cares what this band of traitors says?

They are murderers and the whores of murderers. Nothing more.

After 911 we were united. United as a nation to get the men responsible for 911, and to support and comfort the survivors and the families of the fallen.

That didn’t mean we’d sign on to murder.

As soon as they started talking murdering innocent people, then they became just as foul and evil as the terrorists who knocked down the towers.

    Republicans sharply question Iraq policy

WASHINGTON – Senate Republicans sharply challenged President Bush’s top military general and ambassador in Iraq on Tuesday in a sign that some within the GOP retain serious misgivings about the protracted war.

“Are we going to continue to invest blood and treasure at the same rate we’re doing now? For what?” asked Sen. Chuck Hagel, R-Neb., who supports legislation setting a deadline to bring troops home.

  58. BARTLEBEE says:

It was factually correct. Bush has butchered 20 times more innocent cilvillians as Bin Laden.

If anything what I wrote was “under the top”.

Technically speaking, Bush is actually a worse terrorist than Osama Bin Laden. He’s responsible for the deaths of so many more innocent people.

The only thing that will heal America, particularly in the eyes of the world, is seeing Bush behind bars.

On this sixth anniversary of the Al Qaeda attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, 9/11 has come to symbolize two uniquely American political failings. Worse still, secure in his Pakistani safe haven, Osama Bin Laden even at large continues to serve the political purposes of the current and prospective occupants of the White House.

Apparently this is a common sentiment among conservatives.

Stu Bykofsky, a newspaper columnist in Philadelphia, wants another 9/11 to “sew us back together.” and “I’m thinking another 9/11 would help America.”

    Bryan Milligan
, who also is chairman of the Saline County Republican Party, (Arkansas) says, “I think all we need is some attacks on American soil like we had on 9-11, and the naysayers will come around very quickly to appreciate not only the commitment for President Bush, but the sacrifice that has been made by men and women to protect this country. ..”

  75. Tobey Tall says:

If Bush were in jail the world would understand he was a monster and it was not the American people ( the 28%ers) fault…… serenity would follow

If Bush were half a man he would go to Jail to save his beloved USA after all he expects US troops to die for the USA

Yes, that was a hilarious typo — but one I’m more inclined to blame on News Hounds than on Ann Coulter.

However, Ann’s incorrect use of “media” as a singular noun (”the media is”) is probably all hers, and she does this continually. As a supposedly educated person, she should know better.

  106. Kevin Pua says:

I’ve heard a lot of people compare Joe Lieberman to Chuck Hagel in that they are mavericks who stand for what they believe in even if it runs contrary to what many in their own party believe.

But the difference is that Hagel doesn’t accuse his fellow Republicans of being vicious partisans one minute and then parties with Ward Churchill the next minute. You don’t see Hagel accusing Republicans of being aligned with Al Qaeda the way Lieberman does.

If Lieberman simply supported the war out of principle I’d disagree but I’d still grudgingly respect his views. It’s when he hangs out with such hate-mongers as Hannity and Coulter that really bothers me about him.

Progtards are invested in ignoring terrorists…..like a 3 year old, they cover their eyes and are convinced if they can’t see someone….someone can’t see them. Unfortunately, these collaborators parrot the same talking points as Osama, “impotent Democrat Congress”, “corporatocracy”, etc.

  126. Carl Gordon says:

Funny, but are you missing the big picture (or more correctly, the extremely small picture)? Experiencing the seemingly separateness of things, say Joey Liebberman,(or even Bush himself) and yourself, the viewer, as two different entities is deceptive, when in fact we and everything in the universe are all a bunch of swirling tornados of molecules and atoms, and, if you really want to get down, quarks and their various attracting/repelling strong/weak forces, running into each other and giving the false reading of separate “things”, keeping in mind that none of this would be possible if it weren’t for the uncertainty principle which forced the relative ordered and unified Big Bang to fly apart and then coalesce into the objects we see today, you know, galaxies, stars, planets, people, and pints of lager. It’s the third law of thermodynamics and you just can’t drive around it, nor does it respond to “WTF!”! Instead of everything everywhere flying apart at faster and faster rates of speed, just like you would assume when a uniform singularity like the universe before the big bang would be like, as it would result in a “uniform” explosion, the assumption is that there would be no anomalies to slow down enough that their gravity would instead cause random sections to collapse within themselves and form “things”. But I’m getting way ahead of myself here. We’re all illusory parts off the same thing. And some of those parts have a fake Texas accent and are criminally stupid. And so can babble on (Babylon?) incessantly and confuse at even greater levels.

  127. Vesica Piscium says:

    Comment by mighty aphrodite — September 11, 2007 @ 3:59 pm

when those choices are consistently disasterous for the US then yes I hate them. I think I have made my ideas pretty clear.

1.) reduce troop strenth in Iraq, so the people of Iraq realize we aren’t there forever.
2.) start fighting against those who attacked us. Through cutting off of money, black ops to disrupt training camps, and search and destroy or capture the cowards who convince others to die for the cause.
3.) research into alternate fuels to reduce or eliminate our dependence on foreign oil.

Any problems with any of those ideas?

    Comment by François — September 11, 2007 @ 4:02 pm

And the way you’re saying that you’re downplaying the role of Bush and the neocons in starting the war.

Also you’re toting right wing water when you say “some think we need to keep fighting”, as is “fighting a war” is what we are doing. Fighting what? Who?

The Sunni’s and the Shia and smaller sects are fighting among themselves, just as we predicted they would when we told the idiots who endorsed this war that.

We are not “fighting” anything. We are just occupying and being killed daily in the process.

When a man commits a murder, the FIRST step, is to hold him accountable. Holding Bush and the right wing accountable is the first step to bringing in level heads and SMART people who can then work to clean up the mess, and save Iraqi and American lives in the process.

  155. IaintBacchus says:

Everyone has got Lieberman wrong. He doesn’t care one way or an other which party’s in power and he doesn’t care at all for anybody serving in the military. All he cares about is what’s best for Isreal. And that’s the US fighting in Iraq and, even better, in Iran. This man is just one more religious bigot that puts his religion and his tribe before his country. If his religion were Islam instead, he’d be perfectly at home in Mosul, or Anbar or maybe Western Pakistahn.

  156. Marie says:

Who would want Lieberman to represent him, when the man is clearly in this for himself and for his own personal agenda. He is not loyal to his constituency, nor his country, nor his party — he is loyal only unto himself and his desires, and to the extent that he can use his power as Senator to gain what he wants.
