Human Rights And Advocacy Groups Blast Bush’s Torture-Approving CIA Nominee
In a letter to the members of the Senate Intelligence Committee today, a coalition of human rights and advocacy groups urged the Senate to reject President Bush’s nominee for General Counsel of the CIA, John Rizzo. The coalition, which includes the Center for American Progress Action Fund, objects to Rizzo’s record of sanctioning the use of torture in American interrogation of detainees.
In 2002, Rizzo approved a memo written by then-Assistant Attorney General Jay Bybee that stretched the definition of torture, arguing that physical pain must be “equivalent in intensity to the pain accompanying serious physical injury, such as organ failure, impairment of bodily function, or even death” in order to be considered torture.
During Rizzo’s confirmation hearing in June, Sen. Ron Wyden (D-OR) asked him if he “should have objected at the time” to the Bybee definition of torture. “I honestly — I can’t say I should have objected at the time,” replied Rizzo. Watch it:
Unsatisfied by Rizzo’s answers at the hearing, Wyden has put a hold on his nomination, saying that he is going to keep it “until the detention and interrogation program is on firm footing, both in terms of effectiveness and legality.”
Given Rizzo’s intimate knowledge of the administration’s use of interrogation techniques that are “tantamount to torture,” and his utter refusal to stop them, confirming Rizzo would “send an extraordinarily negative message” to the world about America’s attitude toward the use of torture.

If after sitting through it they still don’t think it’s torture then I’d say let it be allowed. Mind you I also believe that every American who supports the war should enlist. And every politician who votes for the war should be required to have one child/grandchild enlist just to make them think hard about their vote. If they’re not willing to risk anything why should anyone else?

The Observer
An Iraqi who was a key source of intelligence for MI5 has given the first ever full insider’s account of being seized by the CIA and bundled on to an illegal ‘torture flight’ under the programme known as extraordinary rendition.
In a remarkable interview for The Observer, British resident Bisher al-Rawi has told how he was betrayed by the security service despite having helped keep track of Abu Qatada, the Muslim cleric accused of being Osama bin Laden’s ‘ambassador in Europe’. He was abducted and stripped naked by US agents, clad in nappies, a tracksuit and shackles, blindfolded and forced to wear ear mufflers, then strapped to a stretcher on board a plane bound for a CIA ‘black site’ jail near Kabul in Afghanistan.
He was taken on to the jail at Guantanamo Bay in Cuba before being released last March and returned to Britain after four years’ detention without charge.
‘All the way through that flight I was on the verge of screaming,’ al-Rawi said. ‘At last we landed, I thought, thank God it’s over. But it wasn’t – it was just a refuelling stop in Cairo. There were hours still to go … My back was so painful, the handcuffs were so tight. All the time they kept me on my back. Once, I managed to wriggle a tiny bit, just shifted my weight to one side. Then I felt someone hit my hand. Even this was forbidden.’
He was thrown into the CIA’s ‘Dark Prison,’ deprived of all light 24 hours a day in temperatures so low that ice formed on his food and water. He was taken to Guantanamo in March 2003 and released after being cleared of any involvement in terrorism by a tribunal.

Yoo believed that the President’s role as Commander-in-Chief gave him virtually unlimited authority to decide whether America should respond militarily to a terror attack, and, if so, what kind of force to use. “Those decisions, under our Constitution, are for the President alone to make,†he wrote in a law article.
A top Administration official told me that Yoo, Addington, and a few other lawyers had essentially “hijacked policy†after September 11th. “They thought, Now we can put our views into practice. We have the ability to write them into binding law. It was just shocking. These memos were presented as faits accomplis.â€
In Yoo’s opinion, he wrote that at Guantánamo cruel, inhumane, and degrading treatment of detainees could be authorized, with few restrictions.
“The memo espoused an extreme and virtually unlimited theory of the extent of the President’s Commander-in-Chief authority,â€
So this same approach was used across the board. Addington effectively sought to obtain “legal opinions†which were in fact illegal, with the specific intent to provide Bush and Cheney with sufficient legal cover to behave as Dictators and Kings, as there were virtually no laws that applied to them, as determined by edict.
This is where we stand today. There is not one single law that applies to Bush or Cheney. They have found lawyers who were willing to craft opinions stating that they were above the law, and in so doing, have subverted the Constitution of the United States.
This activity was intentional, willful and treasonous.
They were sworn to uphold the constitution.
Given this information, others in a position to do something about it (who also swore under oath to protect the Constitution against all enemies Foreign and DOMESTIC) now have an obligation to fulfill.
They must call for the impeachment of this administration. It is their legal obligation given the evidence before them.
Time to choose sides, folks.

check your history, Bartlebee, and understand that Truman dropped 2 A-bombs, and the war was just about won without them. Your assessment of military targets being better is correct, but an atom bomb doesn’t limit itself to the target. The second one was a warning to Russia, at the expense of thousands of innocent Japanese. American presidents are all too eager to kill innocents to make their points, and Bush is the nastiest of the bunch, a psychopath in the Richard Speck-Ted Bundy mold.

I don’t need to check my history Ron. I am quite familiar with both Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and the war was NOT well won without them.
I know because my favorite uncle was busy fighting them in the Phillipines, where estimations of 50,000 dead GI’s were calculated to acheive victory there.
I am not condoning what Truman did. I think it was wrong to drop them on two civilian cities, and I would never have done it. But I was not in that position at the time, and I don’t know what I would have done after being put through such a bloody and horrific war as the Japanese waged in the Pacific. I am pretty sure I wouldn’t have dropped them on military targets though, and not civillian.

Were they aware at the time of the awesome magnitude of loss of life and the aftermath they would be inflicting? Did they know the cities would be obliterated?
I’m not defending the bombings, because I have my own perspective. What I’m curious about is their perspective, and obviously I haven’t read much on the topic.

I never debated that they were not a message to Russia. Particularly Nagasaki.
All I am saying is that we were engaged in heavy fighting in the Phillipines (the “clean up, as it was called was bloody and horrific) and estimates as high as 50 to 90,000 casualties were predicted to push the fall of Japan.
I believe it was wrong to drop them on civiliian cites, and I would have picked more military type targets with less civiliian casualties, but I do understand “why” they decided to do it. Not only were both cities valuable as communications and supply points, there were some military targets, America hated Japan for dragging us through such a horrible and bloody conflict, and at the time, there was probably a touch of revenge in it.
I don’t condone it. And I would not have done it myself. I just can’t jump on the wagon of condemning Truman for doing it. There were a lot of factors there, and for once, America WAS in danger of being destroyed. That is why what the republicans are doing with Iraq and the terrorism is so appalling.Because we are NOT in danger of being destroyed from without. Just from within.
But I don’t fault anyone for condemning the bombings. I condemn the mass killing of civillians too, which is a good reason to not wage offensive war, like the country of Japan decided to do.
The act of waging offensive war is a good way to get your country wiped off the face of the planet. Just look at Rome.

Blame American excepcionalism (we don’t obey international law unless it is to our advantage) for the present round of war. By the way, my favorite uncle was also on stage to invade Japan before Hiroshima and Nagasaki. He says that he was told that casualty figures would be in the thousands in order to take Japan. Does that justify an atomic bomb on a civilian population? I don’t know, but my uncle says it was a great idea!
