Meanwhile, the most expensive, yet crappiest healthcare system (the US) in the world just got even more expensive:

Health insurance premiums rise 6.1 pct. (outpacing inflation)

Health insurance premiums paid by workers and their employers rose an average of 6.1 percent this year, outpacing inflation and pay increases and taking a bigger chunk out of families’ budgets, according to a new survey.

Premiums for employer-sponsored health insurance for the average family topped $12,000 — with employees picking up about one-fourth of that cost — although the increase in premiums slowed for a fourth straight year…MORE

And only Fahrenheit 9/11 (also by MM) and March of the Penguins have grossed more. Think this might have touched a nerve with Americans somewhere?

  10. Lydia Leftcoast says:

I would bet that the right wing critics haven’t seen the movie. They believe everything their right-wing radio and Fox News guys say as if it’s latest word straight from God, and instead of criticizing the actual movie (which they can’t, because they haven’t seen it), they make remarks about the filmmaker’s weight.

The snarky right wingers need to travel outside the country and actually talk to people about their health care systems, as Michael Moore does.

The right wing media don’t want people to find out what is happening in other countries, because then Middle Americans would find out how badly they’re being rooked by their employers and by a government that favors big business over everyone else.

“Health insurance premiums rise 6.1 pct. (outpacing inflation)”

Look for this trend upwards to continue. The Pharmas and the HMO’s are beginning to see the writing on the wall and are in full profit mode. They sense that when the nation switches parties in 2009 there will begin a change in the mentality that has enabled this to go on for far too long. Just like Bush/Cheney running out the clock and making as much money as they can before they’re kicked out of the WH on their asses, the medical industries will follow suit until some form of checks and balances is brought down upon them.

This isn’t surprising, it’s SOP for trolls. They criticize Michael Moore by sniping about his weight. They criticize Barack Obama by pointing out how similar his last name is to “Osama” and that his middle name is Hussein. They criticize Hillary Clinton by comparing her voice to nails on a blackboard, making snarky remarks about the dimensions of her ankles, and making stupid broomstick jokes. They criticize John Edwards by obsessing about his hair.

It’s hard to take any of this very seriously if these are the worst things they can say about any of these people.

  15. katy says:

“Transformers” was a fun ride, i’ll say that!
but i have a kid who collected them back then…

  16. Japaner says:

Fiction? Could you please point out the parts of the film that were fiction?

The state of the REAL Cuban hospitals, those that serve actual Cubans and not rich foreigners or party elites, the ‘hospitals’ that Moore didnt manage to visit.

Scroll down just a bit and see, then ask yourself why Castro had to send for a Spanish surgeon after his own doctor botched his operation.

Huh, guess you must have a lot of time on your hands when you can find spare hours to picket a theatre. Go figure.

  19. Stephen says:

Just imagine how many people could have health insurance if Moore would take that money and give it back to those in need. Barring that, I’m glad people are seeing how sad our medical industry is here in America, praying to the Almighty Dollar instead of helping those in need.

Well, Stevie, if you compare the box-office gross of “Sicko” to the BILLION DOLLAR BONUSES some insurance execs get paid these days, I think it’d be alot more effective to take the profit motive out of healthcare.

  23. Japaner says:

I have to agree with Mr(?) Chow, if you have enough spare time to picket a THEATRE for God’s sake, you are either jobless or easily brought to an hysterical state.

I think it’d be alot more effective to take the profit motive out of healthcare.

Id enjoy that myself, having a government clerk declare that the operation I need just isnt that important, and to please come back during the next budget cycle.

When we pay the surgeons the same wage as the street sweepers, we might just run out of surgeons.

  26. Japaner says:

And yet you come here just to “picket” TP.

Nope, I come here on my short lunch hour to talk with others, like we are doing now. :-)

If I were “picketing” then my appearances would arrive with demands; I make no demands, I just enjoy trading debate and the occassional barb.

Japaner & chow; Wake up and quit smelling the shit you are shoveling. 47 MILLION Americans have NO health insurance, millions more are being squeezed out of what health insurance that they do have. Drug companies are reaping in windfall profits from high drug prices.

The U.S. health care system should be something we brag about. Instead, every country that has a form of universal health care does better than us in every measure, including cost per patient, cost per citizen, birth survival rates, longevity, and quality of life.

Then you better put down your bong and get busy curing cancer.

Im thinking those windfall profits you complain about dont keep you from taking the medicines those companies spend billions to R&D, medicines that make your life easier from maladies that would have killed or made you miserable fifty years ago.

  32. Uncle Ho says:

ALERT! ALERT! ALERT! Chow; only a SMALL amount of their money goes INTO R & D. The rest is aimed at costs and PROFIT$.

  33. Japaner says:

Cuba has universal health care, snidely, feel free to peruse the link I included earlier and see if that particular system is one you would want to use on a regular basis.

  34. katy says:

do you understand, chow, that those profits are after expenditures?

and that MORE money is spent on ADVERTISING than R&D?

    unnecessary advertising, i might add…

did you know that the US spends WAY more than any other country on medicines (script and OTC) ? …
did you know that the US is the only country that allows advertising of medicines?… except new zealand, which is in the process of banning those ads…

    link shortly…

  35. Chow says:

Fine, you are still talking billions of dollars in R&D.

I doubt you have that type of money laying around to search for a cure for Parkinsons, but if you do then get about spending it with your best altruistic effort.

    Comment by Uncle Ho

I have been hearing rumors that big pharma has bought out SICKO, to prevent it from being played at many movie theaters….also, the links to see SICKO on the internet, that I used to send are gone. Michael Moore has said repeatedly he does not care if the movie is found for free on the internet… just so everybody sees it…. So who is keeping SICKO from the public?
Personally, I would love to burn a bunch of SICKO, maybe start a campaign and send these to everyone in time before the primaries.

  46. Zooey says:

Once SICKO gets to DVD, he’ll still be raking in the money — so he can make even more movies exposing the filthy underbelly of this country. I plan on buying at least three copies.

  47. Uncle Ho says:

had enough; We were met at the theater entrance by the Kraft 8 manager, who proceeded to say that the chain’s HQ is in Grand Rapids, and was not his decision to show/not show the movie. An earlier reply by the same manager only weeks earlier said that the movie would not be shown because it was “too liberal”(his own words)

I have heard of another documentary of the Iraq war titled ‘No End In Sight’. Does anyone know anything about that one?

  48. Uncle Ho says:

Hiay Zooey!!! Where have you been? I was asking yesterday if anyone knew where you disappeared to.

  49. Zooey says:

Hi, Uncle Ho! I’ve been working on something new, with some friends. Click on my name. :-)

  50. Uncle Ho says:

Zooey; I could only take a real quick peek on the stuff you’ve been working on. But from the little I did see, OUTSTANDING/4.0

  51. Zooey says:

  53. Ret. Col. Jack Ripper says:

Chow: “I doubt you have that type of money laying around to search for a cure for Parkinsons, but if you do then get about spending it with your best altruistic effort.”

Most of the money spent on R&D by big pharma is subsidized by the American taxpayer. We pay for it… and then, they own the patent. That doesn’t seem fair to me, and the only way to explain it is to point out that no industry has more lobbyists in DC than big pharma.

  54. Ret. Col. Jack Ripper says:

Could phony comparisons to Cuba, a third-world nation which has been suffering under economic santions for decades be any more lame and pathetic. Yeah, guys, we’re better than Cuba!! Pathetic. Not to mention the fact that, as bad as they are, they have better infant mortality rates and life expectancy than we do. Nah, let’s compare to Britain, which gets results rated as twice as good for about 40% of the per capita cost. Or how about France, which is rated among the top in the world at less than 40% of the per capita cost we pay for healthcare.

  55. Ret. Col. Jack Ripper says:

Japaner: “Id enjoy that myself, having a government clerk declare that the operation I need just isnt that important, and to please come back during the next budget cycle.

When we pay the surgeons the same wage as the street sweepers, we might just run out of surgeons.”

Right now, insurance companies pay an army of workers to deny claims. A worker has a corporate incentive to deny. A civil servant has no economic stake in whether or not you get care.

On your second “point,” again with the pathetic strawman arguments. Nobody is suggesting that surgeons and doctors are not among the most highly paid professionals in the market.

  56. Ret. Col. Jack Ripper says:

The CEO of a major HMO received $1.6 BILLION in compensation for his services last year. Overhead for the insurance-based healthcare system we use today: 25 to 40%.

Medicare, which is a classic single-payer system runs with an overhead of about 3%.

  57. Ret. Col. Jack Ripper says:

My nephew pays about $40 for a little bottle of 25 test strips to test his blood for Type I diabetes. In Austrailia, the very same bottle of 25 strips costs $3.00. And, pharmaceutical companies are free to NOT sell their products in Austrailia, yet they keep selling them there.

  58. Ret. Col. Jack Ripper says:

Ozzie suggests an article: “The Ugly Truth About Canadian Health Care” by David Gratzer

But, oh, oh, when you go to Davit Gratzer’s webpage, you find out that Gratzer is a shameless insurance industry shill. He even has links for all of the major HMO’s on his page so that you can quickly go sign up.

Why is it that these corporatists will sit there and make snide remarks about Michael Moore’s truthfulness and then, in the next instant, site an article written by someone paid by the insurance industry to shill for their profits?

  59. phillip williams says:

Would someone please put a bullet in that FAT bastard!!!! The free market is the reason the USA has the best health care in the world. I do not have health care by choice, I pay cash when I go see the doctor just like any other service. Health care is a priveledge, NOT A RIGHT!!!! Do you think doctors will go to school for 8-9 years (longer if they specialize) if they can’t make any money. I am in financial planning and alot of the people I know that don’t have health care, prefer to use the money to buy a second car they don’t need, or a house that is to big and out of their budget. Iam 35 years old and have had to work very hard for the things in my life, the majority of liberals don’t understand this concept because they are highschool dropouts and to stupid to form a rational argument.
    Sincerely,
    Phillip L. Williams
    Republican/Libertarian
p.s. would someone please wipe michael moore’s FAT ASS off this planet-I’ll let your imagination figure out how
