New Media Matters study finds that in newspapers around the country, conservative syndicated columnists receive more space than their progressive counterparts:
– “Sixty percent of the nation’s daily newspapers print more conservative syndicated columnists every week than progressive syndicated columnists. Only 20 percent run more progressives than conservatives, while the remaining 20 percent are evenly balanced.”
– “In a given week, nationally syndicated progressive columnists are published in newspapers with a combined total circulation of 125 million. Conservative columnists, on the other hand, are published in newspapers with a combined total circulation of more than 153 million.”
– In 38 states, “conservative columns reach more readers in total than progressive columns.”

September 11th, 2007 at 8:08 pmEspecially now America is at war, they crave conservative commentary.
And you know this how? Actually, I think the problem is, besides the fact that most of our MSM is owned by conservative corporations, that many progressives and liberals have given up on the main stream media and are getting their facts from the internet. I don’t take a newspaper and the only “news” I watch on TV is Countdown. But, I would pit my knowledge of world affairs, against any person who gets their “news” from the MSM, any day. There are people I work with whom I run rings around. They sometimes come to me to find out what is happening out there in that big scary world because they now know that the “news” they are getting is incomplete at best and inaccurate at worst.
September 11th, 2007 at 8:14 pmOh oh! There’s a an “op-ed gap”!
September 11th, 2007 at 8:15 pmIt’s not a bias. It’s that 60% of people don’t totally agree with you. And if they don’t you label them conservative. Look at how you label Lieberman.
September 11th, 2007 at 8:17 pmWe were in Germany 1996-1998 and Armed Forces radio played whole Fat Boy (i.e., Rush Limpbaugh) dis-Clinton talk shows balanced by a five minute liberal note stuck in between shows at off hours. Why does this surprise anyone anymore?
September 11th, 2007 at 8:23 pmAlso remember that it’s a free market. If the market demand is for conservative (or libertarian) op-eds then that’s the market.
September 11th, 2007 at 8:25 pmAlthough The Oregonian isn’t a great paper, the op-ed pages do make some effort toward balance, and it feels like it’s getting a little better. Lately, at least, they’ve balanced Rich Lowry with Joe Conason. Most of the time. Other days, the local right wing columnist sometimes doubles up with Victor Davis Hanson, which is really creepy, but this looks like it’s happening less and less often.
I think that we’re seeing a shift from newspapers that reflects a general shift of the public’s attitude toward Iraq and toward the obvious corruption and incompetency of the Bush administration. It’s a slow shift, but I would like to see results of the same survey six months from now.

Not well-versed in the market, are you? How many daily newspapers are there in the average American city these days? Do you get to pick and choose which paper you read based on the politics of their op-ed pages?
If not, then the market is not the controlling factor. Therefore, something else controls the content of the op-ed page. Think about it.
September 11th, 2007 at 8:32 pm“Also remember that it’s a free market. If the market demand is for conservative (or libertarian) op-eds then that’s the market.

What makes you think market dynamics apply to radio?
They only apply if the owner wants the station to operate as a source of income; this doesn’t apply to the majority of stations that are being bought up by corporate conglomerates.
Radio stations are being bought by people like rupert murdoch for no other reason than to force a particular agenda or message in a given market. murdoch doesn’t care about profitability, to him and his cronies in washington it’s all about having a channel for whatever message or propaganda he wishes to spew.
September 11th, 2007 at 8:32 pmFirst we learned that 91% of political radio talk content is conservative; now this. The corporate media is powerful and dangerous. Hillary Clinton has promised to reinstate the Fairness Doctrine so that both sides of the argument can be heard.
September 11th, 2007 at 8:32 pmThis isn’t surprising; over the past two decades, editors and publishers have been browbeaten by conservative pundits and radio hosts into thinking that they’re all a bunch of left-wing elitists who have to bring “balance” to their papers by overloading the op-ed page with (as here in LA) crappy wingers like Jonah Goldberg. Plus, conservative readers are more liable to whine and complain in letters to the editor about their views not receiving adequate deference in the press — squeaky wheels get the grease.
September 11th, 2007 at 8:39 pmConservatives are just trying to be heard. No fault there.

September 11th, 2007 at 9:33 pmThere goes that liberal media trying to make something of the obvious bias toward our conservative press.
September 11th, 2007 at 9:39 pmThe editor-in-chief of our local paper occasionally uses his Sunday tech column (normally writing about everything from computers to the Internet to HDTVs) to work in a political statement. Back in the spring he devoted his entire “tech” column to attacking Al Gore and his stance on global warming.
A couple of weeks ago the editor began his column talking about how to address the annoying pop-up windows in the web browser, and mentioned that he was met with pop-ups when recently visiting Drudge’s web site and reading about Iran’s nuclear ambitions (saying that “sooner or later we had to take care of that country”).
But my all time favorite was when he was writing about HDTVs. He went off on some wild tangent that tax cuts were a good thing because when the government has less money coming in, politicians will not spend as much.

How intelligent of you to quote rural and obscure print media. The papers that millions more people ACTUALLY READ publish many more lib op/eds than conservative. It’s not even close.
These liberal sites/blogs are so very dishonest.
“fascist” lol….
September 11th, 2007 at 11:37 pm“To avoid charges of injecting subjectivity into our process, we used, whenever possible, the syndicates’ own description of their writers to define the writers’ ideological alignment… In addition, we also went by political and media affiliations (for instance, a syndicated columnist who is also an editor for National Review can be safely classified as conservative) and writers’ own definitions of their politics, whenever available. For those whom we still could not comfortably identify, we read a sampling of columns to arrive at a designation.
http://mediamatters.org/reports/oped/report
In other words, “If we consider the publication to be conservative, all it’s columnists must be conservative, no independents allowed. If we couldn’t safely label the publication conservative, we guessed and hoped that no one would dispute it.” ;)
By the way, I didn’t dispute the study in my original post, only the objectivity of Media Matters. But this sounds strangely similar to the talk radio thread. “Conservatives dominate overwhelmingly. Progs deserve equal time. Nevermind that people choose which stations to listen to and newspapers to buy. Force them to listen to and read prog viewpoints. We know what’s best for them!” ;)

It’s sad that the libtards can’t see that.
September 12th, 2007 at 2:57 amOMG! I know!
It’s common knowledge that the Media has a Liberal bias!
Can you believe the s#$% they are trying to pull with this bogus study?
September 12th, 2007 at 2:59 amYeah, I know. It never ceases to amaze me though, the stupidity of these people!
September 12th, 2007 at 3:00 amI can hardly believe that Media Matters is taken seriously by the Left.
Maybe that’s why their votes don’t count!!!
September 12th, 2007 at 3:02 amI wouldn’t be a bit surprised if posts #73-81 were all Mr Pee. Whadaya bet? What are the odds of all those different people appearing at 2:50 am?
If you think Iranian intelligence is influencing MediaMatters, then you are really in tinfoil hat territory. Course, you also though Hillary had the Minneapolis bridge destroyed!
But Reagan/Bush actually did sent hundreds of millions of dollars worth of weaponry illegally to the terrorist state of Iran under Khomenhi. That’s a fact.
September 12th, 2007 at 3:05 amMedia Matters is a Leftist hack job.
It’s financed by George Soros and Iranian Intelligence.
They aren’t credible.
Most Newspaper Editorials are Leftist!
Read the Op-Ed page of the NY Times, Washington Post, La Times and Atlanta Journal Constitution.
This report has no credibility since it’s done by a Stalinist Organization financed by Foreigners and Islamists!

September 12th, 2007 at 3:07 amI predict that shortly TP will get its act together and all your different personalities will have to find someone else to annoy.

They aren’t credible at all!

Yup.
September 12th, 2007 at 3:07 amI get the Sunday Los Angeles Times every weekend and the ratio is about 15 to 1, left leaning….not to metion the left-leaning slant of the news itself.
The problem with you TP nutters is that you all are sooooo far to the left that virtually everything is to the right of you.

Don’t take it personally, Jimmy P.
At least you saw through this thinly veiled LIE!!!! which is more than I can say for the libtards!!!
September 12th, 2007 at 3:11 amI would also add that some of the regulars can’t stop trying to pull someone off topic over in a corner where at that point they can take cheap shots, “kicking to the ribs per say”, while the person dragged off gets banned and the regulars do not. Hummmm….Fair and Balanced, do they not want to hear both sides. Correct Prof. Dumbass. Wait a poster on this site I believe already has that name, If not I’m sure it’s close to ProfDumAssSomething. Anyways, Ban Ban,Ban, Delete, Delete, Delete. That’s all the know how to do on this site and the pussy’s pose sing as regulars, are a bunch of 12yold’s pretending to be grownup’s while the women running this site are a bunch 70yold’s trying to pass as 40yolds while trying to pass as someone who does not have to by 3 tickets on an airline cause that’s how side their ass is.

September 12th, 2007 at 3:29 amWhoa… ladies! This is a public restroom. Tuck those teenie little things back in your panties or we’ll have to call the police!
September 12th, 2007 at 3:38 amGreat study by Mediamatters. Cogratulations.
September 12th, 2007 at 9:02 amRight-wingers think Katie Couric is a liberal.
September 12th, 2007 at 9:03 amLMAO! No wonder they are confused about this super-study.
I almost forgot: George Soros has a liberal mind ray that he uses to control America’s minds with. Even passing by Katie Couric while flipping through the channels can turn you liberal.
Right cons?
You f’ing morons!
September 12th, 2007 at 10:52 amThe Port Huron Times Herald features the idiot Michael Reagan weekly. They NEVER would run pieces by the late Molly Ivins, or Arianna Huffington, or Jim Hightower(just to name a few).
“liberal media” my a$$.
September 12th, 2007 at 11:13 amKevin: “It’s not a bias. It’s that 60% of people don’t totally agree with you.”
Check the polls. Americans are actually overwhelmingly liberal on the issues.
And, this isn’t a “market” issue. Local newspapers are almost always “natural monopolies.”
And, please don’t use the NYT as some benchmark for why you think this study is wrong. The NYT sold the Iraq war unquestionably to the public. They pushed the Whitewater hoax for years after it was proven the Clintons did nothing wrong.
September 12th, 2007 at 2:46 pmConservatives, if you’re going to make a blanket statement that Media Matters, “lies,” shouldn’t you have the responsibility to tell us exactly what the “lies” are? On the merits, where have you found a lie in the study?
September 12th, 2007 at 2:49 pmEditor and Publisher conducted a poll of the nation’s publishers and editors in 2000 and found that about two-thirds of these people supported Bush and the republican agenda. This poll didn’t get much press. Why is it so hard for conservatives to concede that wealthy publishers and their middle management favor conservative opinion makers? What is it about this subject that frightens them so much?
September 12th, 2007 at 2:55 pmI see the right wing scum…
…like to slink on while the rest of us are asleep…
…it’s probably their boring sex lives…
…as evidenced in viewing their comments…
…they’re having DEAD ideological mind(less) sex with each other…
