In the Washington Post’s write up today of Gen. David Petraeus and Ambassador Ryan Crocker’s second day of testimony, reporters William Branigin, Robin Wright and Peter Baker quoted Rep. Patrick McHenry (R-NC) as saying, “Let the generals in the field dictate.” The reporters also referred to McHenry as “an Iraq war veteran“:
Republicans, by contrast, seized on the plan as a political lifeboat after months of being forced to vote against measures repudiating Bush’s policy. “Let the generals in the field dictate,” said Rep. Patrick T. McHenry (N.C.), an Iraq war veteran. “We would support it,” said Rep. Jack Kingston (Ga.), a member of the defense appropriations subcommittee.
McHenry, however, never served in the military, let alone the Iraq war. You can email the Post’s corrections page at corrections@washpost.com.
UPDATE: The Washington Post has corrected the article.

And another chickenhawk becomes as big a war hero as Audie Murphy.
September 11th, 2007 at 1:07 pmThey get him mixed up with Patrick Murphy?
September 11th, 2007 at 1:11 pmI would prefer to have a member of the House present a bill or amendment to a bill censuring the WaPo for dishonoring the troops by representing Mchenry as an Iraqi Vet when he hasn’t the guts to actually be a soldier.
September 11th, 2007 at 1:13 pmCertainly not to be confused with Patrick Henry, American Revolutionary War patriot.
“Give me liberty, or give me death.”

Keith; I prefer Colleen McMurphy(Dana Delaney). Yum.
September 11th, 2007 at 1:36 pmNot only has the obnoxious, strutting little peacock McHenry never worn a military uniform, the reason might very well be for the yet to be substantiated rumors that he’s another Larry Craig scandal just waiting to happen. It’s been reported that he’s one of several GOP Congress critters on Mike Roger’s list that he plans on outing in the not too distant future. Stay tuned — things could get a lot more interesting over the next several months.

September 11th, 2007 at 1:39 pmWayne Madsen dug up some interesting stuff on McHenry, tying him to the triple death of GOP operatives in Orlando, FL, a few weeks ago…please attribute if you circulate…
———————————-
Adding to the GOP’s “gay woes” are reported links between North Carolina Rep. Patrick McHenry and the alleged shooting murder-suicide of three men in Orlando, including Ralph Gonzalez, the former director of the Georgia Republican Party, campaign manager for Florida GOP Rep. Tom Feeney (who was instrumental in successive election fraud cases in Florida, including 2000), and close friend of former Christian Coalition chief Ralph Reed. Orlando police have suggested that one of the dead men, Jason Robert Drake, was the shooter. The other dead man, David Abrami, was also a GOP operative, as well as Gonzalez’s housemate.
Drake, an ex-Marine, reportedly worked for McHenry on a number of Republican campaigns in North Carolina.
With connections to a number of Republican members of Congress, it has been suggested that Orlando police have been a bit too quick to point to a gay triangle element in the shooting deaths.
There are reported links between McHenry and Drake and McHenry and Gonzalez. It has also been reported that there are links between McHenry, Drake, and two gay pornography producers, Harlow Cuadra, Bryan Kocis, and a gay escort service operating out of Norfolk and Virginia Beach, Virginia. That service has also been connected to top GOP leaders in Washington. Cuadro has been charged with murdering Kocis in Pennsylvania.
It is also noteworthy that former two-term Virginia Republican Rep. Ed Schrock, a married retired Navy Captain, decided not to run for re-election in 2004 after his voice mail messages were found at a Virginia Beach gay escort service called MegaMates/MegaPhone.
September 11th, 2007 at 1:46 pmThe WaPo meant to say “said Rep. Patrick T. McHenry (N.C.), a wide stance toe tapper”.

McHenry? An Iraq war vet? Have you SEEN this guy? He’s about 5 feet tall!
September 11th, 2007 at 1:50 pmWhat? How dare you people criticize an honest mistake! We promise to correct it in 7 pt. type at the bottom of page A17 on Saturday.
September 11th, 2007 at 1:54 pmSo-Called Liberal Media once again assuming that the “stay the course” Republican (McHenry) is the Iraq War vet, when in fact the only Iraq War vet in Congress (Patrick Murphy, PA-8) is a Democrat who wants to end the war.
Patrick McHenry (R-NC) loves the Iraq War and has not enlisted (despite his young age), and is therefore by definition a Chickenhawk.
September 11th, 2007 at 1:58 pmPatty McHenry, member of the Pipsqueak Brigade.
September 11th, 2007 at 2:00 pmPatrick McHenry is 31 years old, never served in the military, unmarried, and opposes same-sex marriage.
No that there’s anything wrong with that.
September 11th, 2007 at 2:09 pmYou can’t unring a bell.
McHenry served in Iraq. That is all people will remember. Thank you Washington Post!
Who cares about a correction on page A20?
September 11th, 2007 at 2:18 pmHey Paddy, if you want to actually be an Iraq war hero, why not enlist?? Ohhhh… That’s right. But hey, (whispering) If you don’t tell, we won’t ask…
September 11th, 2007 at 2:27 pmActually, the promotion of McHenry (Toad-NC) to Iraq War vet was done by Peter Baker and Jonathan Weisman in the article entitled “General Praises Progress, Warns Against ‘Rushing to Failure’ “. The error was subsequently deleted, but not before the misinformation was spirited around the country by other newspapers who carried the article.
September 11th, 2007 at 2:35 pmPatrick may not have been in the military, but the military has certainly been in him.
September 11th, 2007 at 3:25 pmThe same Patrick McHenry who voted “no” on Voting Rights Reauthorization in the last Congress?
September 11th, 2007 at 3:49 pmThis is what he said last month at a town hall in Cleveland County
September 11th, 2007 at 3:50 pmsomething must be up with this guy-the media has to dress him up a bit before the other shoe drops.
