Neil Volz, former chief of staff to Rep. Bob Ney, was spared jail time today and instead sentenced to two years probation, a fine of $2000, and 100 hours of community service for his role in the Jack Abramoff scandal. Volz had earlier argued that he should be spared prison time because he had “endured harsh criticism, including abusive phone calls” from Ney when his ex-boss suspected he was helping investigators.
UPDATE: TPMmuckraker has more.
Guess having the Repug slime all over him for the rest of his sorry-ass life and having had to kneel at Ney’s desk avery day is punishment enough, huh?
September 12th, 2007 at 1:03 pmThat’s too bad. I was hoping Neil Volz got the maximum allowed under the law.
September 12th, 2007 at 1:04 pmHeh. Dobson, Focus on Family laying off employees, donations down.
September 12th, 2007 at 1:14 pmMaximum time in jail allowed under the law? And probably most of the time with Representative Ney…. that would be cruel and unusual punishment.
September 12th, 2007 at 1:15 pmMaybe Volz should talk to Larry Craig about how to withdraw his guilty plea.
Or about anything else he wishes to withdraw from somewhere, for that matter…
September 12th, 2007 at 1:17 pmDUHbya can claim the same defense as he has “endured harsh criticism, including abusive phone calls.â€
And those were just from Laura, Uncle Dick, and Momma Babs.
September 12th, 2007 at 1:18 pmTime to send Dobson some more money then.
September 12th, 2007 at 1:25 pmWhat a damned joke. All these criminals have a permanent “get out of jail free” card. $2,000, and 100 hours of community service. Hardly enough to even qualify as a slap on the wrist.
Meanwhile, mere possession of any amount of marijuana merits a fine of $10,000 and a possible one year prison term, according to federal law.
Justice is truly blind in this country.
September 12th, 2007 at 1:33 pmWhen’s the hammer coming down on Dunk’n Donuts Hunter and Jerry ‘look at my hair’ Lewis?
They should both join Ney in jail. Volz was just a stooge, but at least he helped nail Ney.
Did Bob Ney get to take all those valuable coins with him to jail?
September 12th, 2007 at 1:33 pmIf he had been a Democrat, he’d be looking at 20 years minimum.
The GOP double standards are truly amazing.
September 12th, 2007 at 1:57 pmTime to send Dobson some more money then.

Now, THAT is funny! Why anyone would send that puff-ball bullying bigot a dime, is beyond me. Especially anyone on this site, assuming they were REAL Christians. Ol’ Jimmy D couldn’t make it through the day without breaking maybe 7 of the 10 Commandments.
September 12th, 2007 at 2:01 pmNey: Is Heywood there?
September 12th, 2007 at 2:03 pmVolz: What?
Ney: Is Heywood there?
Volz: There is no Heywood here.
Ney: Oh, well do you have Prince Philip in a can?
Volz: Damnit, Ney knock it off this is the fourth time tonight.
Click-buzzzzzzzzzz
Lets see –
One one side of the seesaw he knowingly participated in a massive scheme to defraud the public and gain political favor. The scheme helped move around millions (and perhaps billions) of dollars and political favors.
On the other side he got abusive phone calls from Ney.
About $2000 should balance the seesaw ?
September 12th, 2007 at 2:17 pmMy crocodile eyes are wet yet again!
September 12th, 2007 at 2:20 pmFor the record, God is the final judge on who is a “real” Christian or not. Focus on the Family does excellent work defending conservative values (and probably got Bush re-elected). I’ve also purchased several good books from Dobson. If anyone NOT on the “Ignore List” wants to discuss Dobson, or even the convicted Ney staffer avoiding jailing time, let me know.

I live in Colorado and I have seen first hand his “Christian-like” behavior. The way he treats anyone that disagrees with him, his blasts at his employees, his total support and then abandonment of his ex-good buddy, Teddy Haggard and, as you said, his underhanded support of getting the worst and most immoral President appointed in our history.
