CBS Defends Katie Couric’s Iraq ‘Puff Pieces’: Bloggers Are ‘Not Intelligent’»

Last week, CBS Evening News anchor Katie Couric reported from Iraq, but her stories largely repeated the Bush administration’s talking points. On Sept. 2, Couric even admitted on CBS’s Face the Nation that her rosy reports were based on “what the U.S. military want[ed]” her to see:

And so, you do see signs of life that seem to be normal. Of course, that’s what the U.S. military wants me to see, so you have to keep that in mind as well. But I think there are definitely areas where the situation is improving.

Watch it:

A MoveOn.org member recently wrote to CBS, expressing the opinion that Couric’s reports appeared to be “puff pieces scripted by the institutions it purports to be investigating.” CBS’s response questioned the “intelligence” of the person, adding that he or she probably found the “information from a blog somewhere”:

moveonemail4.gif

CBS’s viewers evidently agreed with the MoveOn member. Last week, Couric’s ratings “averaged 5.4 million viewers, the lowest ratings on record since the current ratings system took effect in 1987, according to Nielsen Media Research.”

UPDATE: A C&L commenter received this response from CBS: “Sorry you didn’t get a chance to see much of the reporting from Iraq….if you had, you wouldn’t have written such a note…imagine all your info came from a blog…too bad.”

UPDATE II: Christy Hardin Smith at FDL is writing to the CBS Evening News senior producers and “asking whether (a) this is the usual response of CBS to legitimate viewer criticism and (b) whether they would officially like to disavow this sort of customer non-service.”

Digg It!

  1. tom Says:

Katie’s toast. She has been for some time now. Even her trip to Iraq couldn’t save her skin. The CBS national news has become nothing but puffery since she arrived. She neither deserves or gets any credit as a journalist — only FoxSnooze can get away with putting bimbos and former weathermen on their programs and claim that they’re journalists.

It won’t be very long before CBS announces her departure. I wonder who will be succeeding her in the anchor seat.

  2. Kiki Says:

Katie’s never followed up on anything. During the last election, on the Today Show, two Republicans were spouting off about how George W. Bush was in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War and she didn’t call them on it once.

(I almost had to buy a new TV after flinging a coffee mug)

If CBS thought that bringing her on would boost their ratings, they’re obviously NOT being run by “intelligent people”.

  3. lpinoh Says:

you’d think that CBS would be a bit nicer to someone who admits to actually ‘watching’ Couric!!!

  4. Krazny Says:

I remember Couric saying on the Today Show, that they would talk to President Bush about his “gut wrenching” decision to go to war with Iraq. expecting anything but fluff, and talking points is insanely naive.

  5. troqua Says:

I’m pretty amazed at that reply from CBS. Sounds very thin-skinned and defensive. If CBS can’t handle any kind of criticism, maybe they need to fold up the tent now. Or hire more professional customer service people to answer viewer emails.

  6. Starve-A-Bush_Feed-A-Beaver Says:

Couric should just go on the air from now on wearing rose-colored glasses and call her show the “Puff Piece Report”. That way she would be offering a special niche show for the Puff Piece fancier and for those who enjoy being lied to and she would end any controversy.

What’s wrong. “dean”? No one rose to your bullshit at #1, so you felt you had to fling more stupid out there?

Absolutely true. Liberal bloggers are very, very stupid people. I would have to inflate their grades just to pass them.

    You’re an educator? hardly.

  9. Bobwurst Says:

    sorry tripmaster,
    I’ll refrain from anymore feeding.

  10. troqua Says:

Dean’s a professor today, not a lawyer. Watch for a plagiarized resume to follow.

  11. dono Says:

‘most intelligent people’ - thats a good one. Most TV watchers are brilliant , simply brilliant. An on button and channel changer - pretty high barrier to entry there.

Trust the main stream media or YOU are stupid…

    Now move along…

    Nothing to see here…

  12. Polly Mathe Says:

    Well, duh?

The only reason Couric has the job is because she is a “puff”.

    And the namejacking begins.

It’s a pity you have nothing else to oppose me with.

  14. CT Voter Says:

What an embarrassing reply by “CBS News”. Insult a viewer who took the time to write in with a vague generality that’s impossible to back up (”most intelligent people”) followed by an assumption about where the viewer obtained information. Hilarious. Unfortunately, it epitomizes the quality of CBS News, doesn’t it?

    As for this:

Liberal bloggers are very, very stupid people. I would have to inflate their grades just to pass them.

Dude. Talk about “stupid people”. Why assume CBS News was referring to liberal blogs?

Dean has now added namejacking to his resume. Nice try, Deanie.

  17. Women And Minorities Hardest Hit Says:

Is this the same MoveOn that scripted the “Betraeyus” ad, and now they are complaining about Couric? Where was this brave organization when Rather (also CBS) was busy forging talking about forged Bush records?

Hate to break this to ya, but Couric’s numbers have been in the crapper since her second show, its not as if she had a huge audience to lose.

    More intellectual frippery from TP.

I don’t support an actress placed in the position of a newsie, but she has been honest about this, it seems to me. That is why I keep defending her on this one, honesty is so damn rare.

  22. kelso Says:

    “most intelligent people”

Funny, I would think that ‘most intelligent people’ could formulate a response in complete sentences.

Instead….. there is a lot of…… period marks….. rather than using periods for the purpose of……..breaking up individual………..sentences.

CBS could use a few more people with actual intelligence who can at the very least, compose a thorough reply to the MoveOn member’s email.

  27. Tired of Republicans and Democrats Says:

I am tired of Republicans and Democrats politicizing 9/11. I was at Ground Zero during the ceremony and noticed many people mourning, yet, once I returned home, you had Republicans and Democrats in the MSM politicizing this attack. It makes me feel like we, the American people, are being exploited for capital and personal gain. Why? Greed and supremacy. Also, my niece was killed in the attack. President Bush had numerous documents and countless Government and Foreign officials informing him that an attack was imminent. Yet, he never attempted to bolster domestic security. Each year he mourns as if he understands and has sympathy for the victims’ families. The President should apologize to America for his lack of urgency and promise that he will continue to implement security policies to protect this country. Until then, I believe that the President shouldn’t attend any 9/11 Memorial events until he apologizes. I DEMAND AN APOLOGY. I do not want to shake his hand nor do I want a hug. I want an apology and answers. It’s funny that all of the terrorists are being produced and trained from Afghanistan and Pakistan, yet we continue to resolve issues in Iraq. Why? Sometimes I feel like crying when I look at the President and both parties because I know they do not care about true Americans unless you are a CEO, muti-millionaire/billionaire, high official. Also, Democrats refuse to fight for us by debunking/prosecuting vile Republicans/Democrats. I cry because the future of America is doomed. I’m tired. Somebody help!!!

“Katie Couric hits another record low in ratings.”

The operative word in that sentence is “another”, attesting to the fact that Couric was already setting low viewership records.

She wasnt exactly burning up the airwaves before her trip to Iraq.

I believe much more than a simple apology is in order. A comprehensive, independent investigation of 9/11, for one. Chimpy testifying publically, under oath, with transcripts, while not having his hand held by Deadeye, for another.

However, I doubt I’ll live to see either one of these things happen. As your nick suggests, our elected representatives are corrupt and criminal on both sides of the aisle…bought and paid for.

  34. dim wit Says:

Is there anyway to verify this? I tried going to both CBS (to see if they posted an apology) and MoveOn and there is nothing at either site.

As much as I personally dislike Couric, I can’t believe CBS would respond in such a way to one of their few viewers.

In a bit of irony, CBS has its own blogs, though (and i am not making this up) the most popular story at the moment is “the perfect pot pie.” Apparently journalism is dead over at CBS (unless your investigating the local pot pie maker)

  35. missmolly Says:

My, that was certainly a professional reply from CBS, wasn’t it? It sounds like they could use a little customer service training if they wish to keep their viewers. I know I’M not impressed with their attitude.

Maybe they are trying to build their viewership out of the braindead rah-rah-usa-and-everybody-else-can-just-f*ck-off crowd. Unfortunately, Fox News has already cornered that market.

  47. Dan - a male Says:

This post is an embarrassing example of gender bias. Couric has been dogged by ratings, which are basically based on the fact that old white men and women (who watch the evening news) want to see a grey, haired old man read the TelePrompTer.

Would anyone have used the term “Puff Pieces” about a story by Brian Williams? Perhaps, but I bet no one gave it a thought for Couric (Ohh, she’s just a little perky power puff girl isn’t she, right?).

I was refreshed that she admitted it was a dog and pony show. Most journalists hate to do this because it just goes to show what bad journalists they are - see Colbert at the National Press Club Dinner.

All of the three nightly new casts have been bad. Don’t take it out on her because she’s a woman

BTW I am a HUGE ThinkProgress fan. I read it at least 5 times a day. I hate the criticism about liberals blogs!

It’s not fair to blame Katies Couric alone, how about the executives who put her in a job for which she was not qualified. I’m no expert, but I’ve seen many women on the news who have a more credible demeanor than Couric. CBS put her in because it was “easier” to hype somebody who was known than to find somebody new and good. Obviously CBS deems their viewers too dumb to adjust to some new talent, make you think their demographic IS the elderly so only a grey haired guy will work.

There’s no namejacking going on from the dissenting posters, so let’s stop pretending.

Heh heh, we have him so pissed off, he doesn’t know which one of us to namejack next. And as if we can’t tell either. Too bad his feral brain doesn’t engage at a high enough level to figure any of this out.

    How sad his life is!

Such a fine outstanding group of intelligent words we have here. Who is not so bright?

  91. WC Says:

Was listening to Paul Harvey on the radio at noon. He mentioned Couric’s ratings and said that his radio show trumped CBS’s ratings. Heh.

  92. Sean McGee Says:

    That letter could be fake.

Where’s the complete headers showing the server the e-mail came from?

It’s easy to spoof an e-mail.

In fact, I’m thinking about doing that myself…maybe I’ll get a bunch of pageviews off of it!

  93. barkleyg Says:

According to the almighty ratings, it turns out MORE intelligent people watch the other networks news shows than watch Katie. So, according to that e-mail, when intelligent people have a choice of network news, CBS has the fewest intelligent people watching them.

Another way to look at it, many more intelligent people would rather watch ABC or NBC, than CBS. I know I would brag about that(NOT(!!

  94. barkleyg Says:

Without even looking at the ratings, it is safe to say that less than 1/3 of intelligent people choose CBS NEWS as their choice for News.

  95. barkleyg Says:

Without even looking at the ratings, it is safe to say that less than 1/3 of intelligent people watch CBS NEWS as their nightly news program.

  96. eLad in MO Says:

TP’s reputation is on the line, regarding the validity of the MoveOn email and response from CBS. One would have to assume this was vetted before being posted here. I can atest to the fact that TP takes their credibility more serious than simply allowing a rogue TP poster to run amuck.

  97. BARTLEBEE Says:

The good news is that Katy will be applying for a job on “The View” within a year.

  98. Leftside Annie Says:

Jebus. Being Right Wing Authoritarian followers must keep millions of trolls employed defending their Dear Leader.

    Tiresome. Oh so very tiresome.

  99. USMC6002 Says:

Absolutely true. Liberal bloggers are very, very stupid people. I would have to inflate their grades just to pass them.

It’s called an ‘ellipsis.’ But then you did not know that did you…

A high school girl could do better.
She’s a bubble head and no more a journalist than I am an astronaut.
Everything she reads has been written for her by bubble heads only slightly brighter than she.

  102. pbg Says:

If Katie hadn’t been there before, how could she talk about things ‘improving’?

  103. N Says:

The timestamps don’t line up on those emails that are pictured. The email from the MoveOn member shows it was sent after CBS’s reply. Which doesn’t make sense. There is something fishy here. Just look at the time and date.

  104. aeskylos Says:

Wasn’t Miss Couric almost out of a job a month ago because of her vanishing viewers? Never in the history of TV newsreporting have I encountered such a vapid woman reporter. Katie should take lessons from a real journalist- Katie Pilgrim of CNN.

  105. Peet Says:

Scrolling through the thread, I kinda lost track of who was liberal and who was conservative. I just saw a bunch of gradeschoolers yelling nyah-nyah-nyah at each other. What on earth does that do for you guys? Just break out the slingshots, TP each other’s houses, and get it over with.

  106. barkleyg Says:

#113 The time stamps are different for different time zones.

Let me explain it like King George’s flunkies explain things to him: “even a 5 year old can understand it”! That was an old Georgeie boy joke about why he always talks to his pathological base athough they were 5 years old.

Back to the explanation. I live on the west coast. When I send an e-mail back east at 8:00pm pst, the recipient on the east coast gets the e-mail at !!:00 est. Same exact moment, different times because of time zones.
Hope that answers your question. The only thing fishy is that even a 10 year old can figure that out!!

  107. Dr. Richard Welser Says:

It was interesting to note the comment about intelligence. CBS, of course, has no clue. I guess that says it all.

    forensic neuropsychologist

  108. Sean McGee Says:

I still think it’s fake. CBS is a pretty big company. I’m pretty sure they’ve heard of “Customer Service”.

I find it hard to believe that a large corporation would allow a response to be sent in that fashion. Ellipses and everything.

As to the timestamps…there is something fishy there.

CBS Evening News is filmed in New York. Logically, the response would have come from New York.

For the response to have been e-mailed at 11:45 AM Eastern from New York, the original e-mail would have to be e-mailed before that time. Now, unless the Move On member lives somewhere in the wilds of Canada or in South America, the e-mail is probably fake. 11:45 AM Eastern time is 10:45 Central, 9:45 Mountain, and 8:45 Pacific.

Did CBS have a premonition and send the response hours before the Move On member’s email was sent? I don’t think so.

Katie Couric is an idiot, I’ll grant you that, but that e-mail is a fake.

  109. Luis APJ Says:

Funny that the puff piece is only from the first days and not the last days during her time in the middle east…So what…Move On only consternated on Iraq and not the whole piece for criticism

Also intelligent people would be working and have no time for internet and/or tv…*waits*

  110. MoveOnMember Says:

The e-mail is not a fake. I should know — I’m the one that received it. I would be happy to provide the complete e-mail exchange so you can examine the e-mail headers yourself.

I noticed the odd time-stamps as well. At first I thought it was just due to the difference in time zones (I am in CST) but then realized that didn’t make sense.

My best guess is that some server has its time configured wrong. This wouldn’t be the first time I have received an e-mail reply with a time-date stamp that is earlier than the original e-mail.
