McCain ‘unapologetic’ about politicized 9/11 rally.

Yesterday, Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) broke “with recent campaign tradition” and held “a partisan political rally” on the sixth anniversary of 9/11. Instead of staying off the campaign trail like most other candidates, McCain “launched a seven-day ‘No Surrender’ tour at an aircraft hangar in Sioux City, Iowa, hoping to build support for the war in Iraq.” He was “unapologetic” about breaking with the tradition of de-politicizing 9/11:

But McCain, whose morning included a moment of silence in the U.S. Senate and prayers at a church, said a rally supporting the war effort was the best way to honor the victims of the terrorist attacks.

“The important thing about Sept. 11 is that it not be repeated,” McCain told reporters after the event. “And if we leave Iraq, then it will be repeated.”

“I can’t think of a better way to remember and revere their memories and prevent further tragedies and attacks on the United States than to rally support for what Gen. Petraeus in his testimony today (said) was now the central battlefield in the war against terror, Iraq,” McCain said.

A McCain supporter named Al Tobin said it was the candidates that didn’t campaign who made the anniversary political. “It’s a political gimmick,” he said. “It makes headlines, really.”

I call bullshit on that…when has 9/11 ever been anything other than a political chit to the Repubs?

McCain is a washed up has been as far as presidential ambitions go. I don’t really care what he does at this point. And as far as I can tell, many Americans don’t care much either.

This demonstrates just how wacked out McCain has become.
    (Always was?)
Terrorism by its nature is not a “centralized activity”.
Iraq has become a magnet, with the US forces in the center, drawing any militant with a gun into the fray.
Iraq, by virtue of its having been controlled by a dictator, had no role in the so called War on Terror, other than being a place where extremist jihadists did not, and could not, operate.

McCain: “And if we leave Iraq, then it will be repeated.”

So McCain admits Bush’s invasion of Iraq made America LESS safe, not more safe.

  11. Zimzone says:

Are we sure he was in Sioux City?

I was picturing him mulling markets in Baghdad, wearing a pink speedo and looking for rugs. Lindsay Graham Cracker was following right behind, carrying Jean Schmidt on his back. (She didn’t want fall in any vomit.)

Mike Pence, of course, was carrying the water. Bill O’Really was with, but pissed his pants when he heard they were leaving the Green Zone and couldn’t participate in ‘Shop & Awe’.

Truly creepy. But McCain will say anything and twist reality in any fashion he chooses if he thinks it will get him elected El Presidente.

His craziness is probably what caused so many of his top staff to bolt over the last months. Savvy political consultants can generally smell the stench of death in a campaign, and this campaign has been dead for quite awhile.

Give it up, McCain. Learn how to cut brush.

John McCain (R-AZ) was probably part of the inside job to blow up the WTC and that’s why he feels no problem breaking with the tradition of de-politicizing 9/11.

Well, since the Repukes can’t seem to mention 9/11 without using it to prop up their twisted agendas, I, for one, would appreciate it if they were to “just shut up about 9/11″ (even if I’m not actually a Democrat).

Bah. Republicans only invoke 9/11 to scare people and to demonize the Democrats.

It smells just as bad. He could have become confused by the stench…

(I was born and raised there, and on a warm day it smells like the bowels of hell itself.)

This is just more unhinged McCain. Last week he was praising Reagan for selling weapons to terrorists to free American hostages.

  24. lefty says:

If we leave iraq it will implode…starting a regional war that will kill more jihadis that we have managed to kill….i dont see a downside.

This is EXACTLY what the pundits have been saying. Can you remember the last time the “conventional wisdom” of the pundits have turned out to be anything but the OPPOSITE of what actually happens? Are you really going to fall for it again? No one can be that wrong all the time. The people who are offering that opinion simply don’t want us to leave. Period. The prognostications have absolutely nothing to do with what they actually think will happen, but what they feel they need to say to influence current opinion.

  26. gdm says:

We could have total victory in Iraq but that doesn’t mean we won’t have another 9/11. Iraq has nothing to do with stopping terror. Terror can come from anywhere. McCain got to give the fearmongering up, his campaign is in ruins and scaring people won’t revive it.

  27. TripMaster Monkey says:

    lefty sez:

How exactly did Rudy “hold back”? After all, he insisted on attending the 9/11 commemoration ceremony in his role as “America’s mayor”, and read out the names of the victims.

I agree. From 1776-2000, we had a long tradition of not politicizing September 11. Of course, much has changed since.

You really are entirely full of sh!t, Ringo. What the Democrats and Liberals have been demanding is a full investigation of what and how 9/11 happened. No one is ignoring it and no one is hoping people will forget. Try to keep up.

  31. Arthur C. says:

It wasn’t the Dems who told a CIA briefer on August 6, 2001, when told “Bin Laden Determined to Attack Inside the United States,” “OK, you’ve covered your ass. Now go home.” It was that incompetent ass George W. Bush. Don’t you ever forget that, ya whiny bootlicker.

  35. Tired of Republicans and Democrats says:

I am tired of Republicans and Democrats politicizing 9/11. I was at Ground Zero during the ceremony and noticed many people mourning, yet, once I returned home, you had Republicans and Democrats in the MSM politicizing this attack. It makes me feel like we, the American people, are being exploited for capital and personal gain. Why? Greed and supremacy. Also, my niece was killed in the attack. President Bush had numerous documents and countless Government and Foreign officials informing him that an attack was imminent. Yet, he never attempted to bolster domestic security. Each year he mourns as if he understands and has sympathy for the victims’ families. The President should apologize to America for his lack of urgency and promise that he will continue to implement security policies to protect this country. Until then, I believe that the President shouldn’t attend any 9/11 Memorial events until he apologizes. I DEMAND AN APOLOGY. I do not want to shake his hand nor do I want a hug. I want an apology and answers. It’s funny that all of the terrorists are being produced and trained from Afghanistan and Pakistan, yet we continue to resolve issues in Iraq. Why? Sometimes I feel like crying when I look at the President and both parties because I know they do not care about true Americans unless you are a CEO, muti-millionaire/billionaire, high official. Also, Democrats refuse to fight for us by debunking/prosecuting vile Republicans/Democrats. I cry because the future of America is doomed. I’m tired. Somebody help!!!

  36. missmolly says:

WHAT “tradition” of depoliticizing 9/11? News to me. When we have the leading Republican candidate for president running on that one event, when the entire Republican National Convention in 2004 had “September 11″ banners on the stage, when Bush invokes 9/11 as a way to sell every stupid policy decision he’s ever made, I have a hard time swallowing the idea that there is some tradition associated with not politicizing it.

Maybe the ragheads will have pity and slit your throat really fast or stick a grenade up your great sphincter, YO!!!!

Absolutely. Rightwingers talk tough but can’t deliver. It’s all bluster. Osama kills 3,000 americans but righties think that’s fine for him to still be free. Instead they go after impotent Saddam. That’s not tough, that’s stupid.

8 years ago, I would have disagreed with McCain but have some respect for him as being a person who had principles. In short, someone I could have an honest discussion and honest disagreement with.

Today, that is totally lost. His mis-statements about his position on Iraq in the past, in this case his rather slimy statement about politicizing 9/11 and using it to cast mud at his oppponents, etc. etc. All of these have made me lose any respect I may have had for him. It also makes me wonder what kind of Machiavellan Prince he would be should he become prez.

  52. Uncle Ho says:

It’s all very amusing as long as you don’t realize 20-yr olds are getting killed thanks to idiots as McCain, the straighttalker. Talk is cheap, senator. Send your own family!!

  54. anonymous says:

there they go thinking they can get Americans stoked for more war and more blood and sacrifice by slinging more red meat-except we now know it’s that tainted ‘hoof-in-mouth’ variety.
