Bush To Adopt Warner Drawdown Proposal — Is He ‘Hurting The Cause Of Freedom?’»

Tonight in his prime time address, President Bush will announce that a “total of 5,700 of the 21,500 combat troops added this year will return by Christmas.”

This plan mirrors an August proposal put forth by Sen. John Warner (R-VA), who called on Bush to announce on Sept. 15 the that he will “initiate the first step in a withdrawal“:

I say to the President, respectfully, pick whatever number you wish. You do not want to lose the momentum. But certainly, in the 160,000 plus — say 5,000 — could begin to redeploy and be home to their families and loved ones no later than Christmas of this year.

Yet on Aug. 23, the White House shot down the prospects of such a drawdown. Asked to respond to Warner, White House spokesman Gordon Johndroe said, “I think it’s inappropriate for me to say from here right now what the president will or will not consider.” A reporter followed up:

QUESTION: The president has frequently said a timetable would be a disastrous course of action.

JOHNDROE: Yes, and I don’t think that the president feels any differently about setting a specific timetable for withdrawl.

The White House, concerned that the media was reporting that Warner had broken with Bush, “reached out to Warner’s staff and asked him” to back away from his position. But Warner refused to do so, stating he stood by his remarks would not “issue any clarification.”

The right wing also swiftly attacked Warner. Freedom’s Watch spokesman Brad Blakeman claimed Warner’s drawdown “hurts the cause of freedom.” Weekly Standard editor Bill Kristol said of Warner’s call: “I don’t think that’s based on serious military analysis.”

Sen. James Inhofe (R-OK) said efforts to pre-empt the September White House report were “premature and irresponsible.” Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) said, “It’s a little curious to me that people are proposing a change in strategy when in fact the current strategy appears now to be working.”

How many seats do you think the g.o.p. will lose in 2008?

I don’t know how many they’ll loose, but they have what 14-18 seats up for reelection, and the dems have something like 7. Not look well for the GOP at this point.

  6. bobh Says:

and the republican plan unfolds….warner is now doing his best specter impression. sheesh. we saw it coming….why cant the congressional dems.

  7. Tired Of Fighting Says:

These soldiers were due to come home anyway. The 3rd BDE from here at Fort Lewis was due home in Jun-Jul before they were extended, and were replaced by my old BDE 1/25th IN now 1st CAV REGT in Germany which BTW we replaced in 2004.

Same Soldiers different Unit Identifiers and none of you are suppose to be the wiser. Well know this, the same Soldiers are replacing each other some three and four times, I have done it twice and would have been three times had I not had my retirement approved.

People dont be fooled by this, and you Bush supporters show some honesty for a change and realize that this is a normal rotation.

  12. razzle Says:

Everyone knows that this “rotation” is something which was already planned and has absolutely nothing to do with progress in Iraq. Bush will look like a flaming idiot tonight when he tries to spin more propaganda and bullshit. No american will give a rat’s ass about what he is saying because they know it’s all lies.

  13. The Shadow Says:

This whole draw down scam is nothing more than a shell game that they expect us dumb voters to buy. What’s really bad about it is most if not all Republicans will buy it. They suffer from group think and can’t seem to see things as they really are. My brother in law is a Republican and he knows all of the talking points that he picked up on Fox News, and the stupid Drudge Report. He’s so brain washed that he’d agree with anything Bush says. I didn’t always agree with Mr. Clinton and ofter disageee with the weak Democrats who run our party and Congress. I think they are afraid of their own shadow and show it time after time. That is actually why Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid have no business being our leaders. They act as if Bush has a 99 percent approval rating the way they continue to cave in. We need to stand up to them and force them to stand up to Bush or he’ll just roll them again.

  14. Tired Of Fighting Says:

I know you do Uncle Ho, and I have seen you battle ignorance on here more than a little bit.

  15. Tired Of Fighting Says:

BTW Uncle Ho, I appreciate the welcome home comment in the other post, it’s good to finally get there.

  16. Tom Says:

All the words and charts in the universe does not change one simple fact: Bush will leave Iraq to the next President. That is a given. His ego will not allow history to judge his failures, so he must place the burden of ‘heavy decisions’ onto to someone else. That way he can always crow about someone else lost Iraq by not following his ‘path to victory’. Mr. Bush is leaving YOUR sons and daughter in Iraq for his own selfish reasons. if you support this, you are a traitor to our country. Please help us stop the war BEFORE Jan 09. Write and call your congresscritters ALL THE TIME. EVERYDAY. Email them EVERYDAY. Do not be a silent enabler to this administration. We can change the course, but we must out shout WaPo, Fox news, limbaugh, coulter, etc…

Bush should follow what the generals on the ground think is best. If they want to remove some troops by Christmas, then Bush should agree. Either way, this certainly isn’t some timetable. Bush isn’t cowardly enough to set a date for defeat. I am pretty sure he is still working towards victory for the IRaqi people. They certainly deserve a shot at Democracy and Freedom. It is the least we can do for them. Abandoning them now would be heartless and cause a mass amount of death for the poor peoples of Iraq. I would suggest we allow the generals to fight the war and support them 100%

Rx2, I normally don’t agree with much of what you write, but your words struck a chord with me. Your comment is human and fair considering the position we put them in. I disagree that Bush will ‘listen’ to the troops or generals. He won’t IMHO. I believe he is using them as fodder, so he can wait out his time. To me, that would be criminal because no actual, functional progress has been made. Maybe on a couple spots, but nothing on the diplomatic front. Anyway, usually I just yell at you. This time I wanted you to know that your post had an impact on me. I’m thinking about what you wrote.

  34. Roger_Roger Says:

#23 YOu see, I agree that we should NOT have invaded Iraq. We went in for the wrong reasons and we executed the plan badly. With that said, I believe that when you break something, you fix it. Walking away from the people of Iraq now would be horribly heartless. We walk away and the Iraqi’s lose all chance at freedom, democracy, and peace. We all understand that AQ and other terrorist groups would effectively take over Iraq. That poor country would never enjoy freedom or democracy and in the end, the world would be even a more less safe place.

We made this mess and only a heartless uncaring nation would walk away right now.

  35. Dermot Says:

“Not a single member of Congress yesterday cited the most recent extrapolation of Lancet Report showing that around a million Iraqis have been “sacrificed” by the occupation. In a typical US neighborhood with families averaging four, this would be represented by a funeral in every sixth house.”

Roger Roger….It is a Myth that Al Qaeda in Iraq could take over anything. The Majority Shiite’s hate them for blowing up their Mosques and citizens. The Sunni’s have turned on them for their reckless violence and fundamentalist ways. The Kurds won’t tolerate them either.
And MOst Importantly…. these Iraqi’s know who Al Qaeda are, and where they are. They are invisible to western troops, but not the residents of Iraqi neighborhoods.
And Finally, there are very few of them…about 5% of insurgents.
Google “the myth of AQI” for more information.

  41. troqua Says:

  42. Dermot Says:

    Bush/Bin Laden = Al Qaeda

  43. Dermot Says:

Al Qaeda, backed by Bush/Bin Laden Group, is positioning itself to invade Iran for the Saudi Wahabis, the most extreme of the Sunnis. That was the purpose of the surge, to allow Al Qaeda to takeover Anbar province, as the staging area for an assault on Iran.

  44. Billy Hill Says:

Olbermann/Bin Laden = Al Qaeda (new math)

  45. Carmikl Says:

The math is fairly simple here. After the 2200 Marines and 5700 Soldiers have gone home this December the Troop count will still be over 160,000. These troops are just part of the normal rotation that bloated the troop count to 168,000 this fall. It’s all smoke and mirrors folks. These troops were probably on their way home anyway.

  46. Dermot Says:

Bush/Bin Laden - old business buddies. The Bin Laden’s bailed the frat boy’s ass our of every failed financial deal he made. Now it’s pay back. And he’s given the Wahabis our soldiers to fight their fight in Iran.

Gosh, Dermot, if he googles that will he possibly come to a website that says it is so? The million dead Iraqis figure is propaganda drivel, even the UN says so and they are no friends of Bush’s Iraq agenda. Then again, Bush/Bin Laden together form AQ in your world, so I suppose anything is possible.

Tom, I am somewhere between you and Rx2 politically, probably a bit more right than you’d like, but I do notice you refrain from personal attacks for the most part and actually debate issues, which is really nice. I come to TP to see what the “other side” is thinking, it is often so shrill that I am turned off by it, but it is nice to see that classic liberalism in the RFK sense still has some voices advocating it that rise above playground name calling. Human Rights Watch reports that Saddam killed 100,000 Kurdish Iraqis. Another 500,000 are estimated to have died in Saddam’s needless war with Iran i.e., non-civilian deaths attributable to needless war.
That makes Saddam responsible for 100,000 civilian deaths.

100,000 Iraqi civilian deaths in the Iraq war is a conservative estimate. Bush, who claimed to invade Iraq to save Iraqis from being killed by Saddam, has now killed as many Iraqi civilians as Saddam did.

The best hope to get them to remain non nuclear is a political understanding. The mullahs are paranoid because we DID overthrow the democratically elected Govt. of Iran in 1953 for OIL.
We should start with an apology for that. New leadership for America is probably necessary to work out a political deal with Iran,,,But a military attack on Iran is MADNESS!!!

Only one Nation has ever used Nuclear Weapons on large population centers, you know the real WMD, not the Fantasy Iraq stuff. That same nation could not wait to try the Nukes that it had just invented, and one was not enough. They just had to drop another one. Several nations have developed Nukes since, and not one of them has ever used a single one of theirs on any population.

I can see why the USA feels that it has the moral high ground, and is the proper guardian of Nuclear purity. It is consistent with their Family Values Whore mongering and Men’s bathroom Limbo contests.

Putting the USA in charge of global nuclear chastity is like putting Senators David Vitter and Larry Craig in charge of a global marriage fidelity campaign.

picked up a piece of info from randi today…
turns out those bases just happen to be located
in the same areas as the known oil reserves…

    huh…

    imagine that…

  96. Cowboy Billy Hill Says:

Man Derliar…..give it up already….back away from you computer and go do some thing nice for someone…….it will make you feel better. Its dinner time so I am headed to my favorite restaurant with my beautiful wife ………….

  97. Dermot Says:

    Billy Hill

When was the moment when you sold your soul for money? Bush’s moment came in his youth. He learned early about how his grandfather sold out his country to the nazis for money.

  98. Dermot Says:

    Billy Hill

I hope you choke on your dinner

  99. big bad bush Says:

Dermot, you’ve just made yourself look as bad as any other flamer troll here. Is that you Mr. Prez?

I don’t give a rat’s ass what you think. You have nothing to say about Billy Hill’s nazi crapola. Who the hell are you to judge anybody.

  101. big bad bush Says:

You’re dumb. I’m not defending that guy either btw. Just pointing out that you’re nothing but a lowly troll. I can judge you, because you’re making a fool out of yourself.

  102. bilbobaggins Says:

roger_roger I am pretty sure he is still working towards victory for the IRaqi people.

Would you care to define what “victory” for the Iraqi people looks like? According to them, victory would be the United States leaving their country. The last poll of the people in Iraq showed something like 68% saying that our presence there is making them less safe. Or perhaps victory is having clean drinking water and electricity for more than a few hours a day. We’ve done a bang up job on that one.

You are an idiot and could care less what is good for the Iraqi people. All you want is what Bush wants, to steal their oil. You also don’t care one bit about our troops since you want to keep them there, sitting in the middle of a civil war where they don’t know who is the enemy and who is their friend. I wish there was some way you could be transported to Iraq, outside the green zone, for just one day. My bet is that you would change your tune very quickly. But as long as someone else’s kids are dying, you are fine with it.

  103. Dermot Says:

I can judge you, because you’re making a fool out of yourself.

I can judge you too. You’re nothing but a squeamish little scaredy cat who wants to place nice with the nazis. Talk nice about the death of a million people. Screw you and your politeness. It’s because of people like you that our country is in the terrible state that it’s in. You should be ashamed of yourself. But you’re not. You think you’re better than me. You’re not. You’re worse. Cause you don’t have the guts to stand up for the truth.

  104. big bad bush Says:

haha, you have no idea who i am. I never defended the death of 1 million people, nor did I side with billy. How old are you? I’m guessing 15 or so? I’m not sure what all you said in your latest rant, but I’m sure it was quite amusing and very true. Keep the flaming coming; you’re a real big man aren’t you.

All I can say is that your life must suck if you have to come on here and insult people. I’m glad I’m not you. Do the world a favor and end yourself. Flame me again, I won’t be here to read it, but go ahead if it’ll make you feel better. You are one sad little person.

  105. Dermot Says:

haha, you have no idea who i am. I never defended the death of 1 million people, nor did I side with billy. How old are you?

Go play with yourself big bad bush and wait until the nazi returns so you can be polite with him. Maybe have an ‘intellectual’ conversation with the nazi about whether Bush should withdraw 1000 or 4000.

    You’re pathetic

  106. Dermot Says:

    Big bad bush

It’s a good thing that you support the nazi and Bush. Cause the side of truth and justice does not need arseholes like you.

  107. Dermot Says:

    Big Bad Bush -

You’re like Albert Speer the cultured nazi. He put the ‘good’ face on the nazis. An architect, well educated, he had no qualms using slave labor. A minor issue when he was involved in venerating the Fuehrer.

He probablyl listed to classical music while counting the number of slaves who had just died and needed to be replaced.

  108. bilbobaggins Says:

But a military attack on Iran is MADNESS!!!
    Comment by Badger

And a nuclear attack is insane. Anyone besides me very nervous about the fact that our government “accidentally” flew five nuclear warheads across our country to land at the military base that is the staging area for flights to the middle east? I have to say that this scares the hell out of me. If Bush was insane enough to drop a nuclear bomb on Iran, he would start World War III.

  109. Dermot Says:

    Big Bad Bush

Run away, just like Bush. Run away from any disagreement. Cause you are gutless, just like Bush.

  110. Dermot Says:

    bilbo

Bush is inching towards starting WWIII. He’s itching for it. Finally he will come close to matching his grandfather’s hero, Hitler.

  111. Dermot Says:

I am upset because I am in the middle of adjusting my meds. I am hoping to feel better tomorrow when I leave the hospital.

  112. Badger Says:

On the evening news, they had a piece about the Al Anbar shiek who met with bush in Iraq last year. He was murdered by a roadside bomb near his home.
Interestingly. the did not blame Al Qaeda for planting the Bomb….they blamed Iran. Bush is siding with the Sunnis in the civil war in Iraq. This is going to involve Iran, and I don’t like where it is heading.

  113. Badger Says:

ooops I meant to say he met with the Shiek last WEEK.

  114. big papa Says:

Bushiva and L’il Dick have been in office too long…

…al Cracker males have run sh*t for too long…

…the run is coming to an end…

  115. EnricFermi Says:

I’m more worried about the “Effect of Freedom”

We’ve seen what it has done to all of those “jealous of it.”

  116. Com_n_sense Says:

I have a much better plan.

Get ALL our troops out NOW! Then get down on our knees and beg forgiveness from the world’s Nations for electing the biggest f*ck-up this country has every placed in power and pledge to put said leaders in the deepest hole for the rest of their lives and ask for their help in making amends for the death and destruction these megalomaniacs caused.
