Senate panel demands withdrawal of CIA nominee.

On Tuesday, Think Progress noted that a coalition of human rights and advocacy groups were urging the Senate Intelligence Committee to reject President Bush’s nominee for General Counsel of the CIA, John Rizzo. The groups said that Rizzo’s refusal at a June confirmation hearing to disavow his approval of a 2002 memo stretching the definition of torture should disqualify him from the position. Today, the Washington Post reports members of the committee requested the withdrawal of Rizzo’s nomination:

Two U.S. officials familiar with the committee’s decision said the request for Rizzo’s withdrawal has been conveyed to Gen. Michael Hayden, the CIA’s director. [...]

CIA officials declined comment on whether a formal request had been received, but a spokesman said Hayden continues to support Rizzo’s nomination.

Hayden supports Rizzo's nomination? I remember when Hayden was being confirmed. Biden and Feinstein were calling him a "stand-up guy." What a bunch of nasty, nasty people--from Feinstein to Biden to Hayden to Rizzo.

    RATSO RIZZO'S RETURNED!

#1 "NASTY" is a qualification for congressional service; pedophilia, lying, and robbery are others.

  7. missmolly Says:

This is probably all moot -- I'm looking for another "little-known provision of the Patriot Act" to pop up that will allow Bush to install any clown he wishes in the post without having to deal with pesky details like Senate confirmation. Or maybe he'll just issue another Executive Order. He's already pretty much declared the entire legislative branch irrelevant to him, after all.

America does not torture human-beings, period.

    You'd better hide, then.

Apparently a Ted Olson nomination for AG isn't going to get anywhere either. Thankfully.

Republicans support torture. Aren't they supposed to be the "values" party? Some values.

Most indicators show America is sick & tired of being Bushwhacked.

  12. Sheller of the Clams Says:

I guess we need to define torture; libs think torture is making a guy wear panties on his head or have the lights on 24/7 so they wouldnt accept anyone short of Kucinich for the post anyway ("short" not meant as pun though it fits).

Liberalism: turning its back on America since 1965.

    I guess we do.

Let's start with waterboarding. Your thoughts?

#12. Actually, I think most liberals agree with Human Rights Watch, The Red Cross, and The United Nations, all of whom have found that Bush and his cronies are torturing prisoners.

For the last time... yer not gonna blame the way GOOPers choose to behave on us! And WHY are you so obsessed w/ the prive lives of Republican Congressmen?

I was under the impression the Germans and Japanese both used waterboarding in WW II, and it was considered a war crime.

  19. Democrat Soldier Says:

The really interesting thing is that there is not one single case of torture (or to use right-whiner double-speak: enhanced interrogation techniques) exposing any operation that stopped any terrorist attacks!

    NOT ONE SINGLE INSTANCE!

I'm quite sure that if there was one single example of this happening, the right-whiners would be trumpeting it all over!

Conservatives: betraying the founding fathers and the US Constitution since before 1972!

You would be correct. Another organization that used waterboarding as one of its premier torture methods was the Khymer Rouge.

Marvelous company we're keeping, isn't it?

    TP,

Just wanted to let you know that I was scanning the comments, and it looks like you are making a good effort at improving Troll Control. That can only bode well for you. I look forward to progress in this area.

Um... yeah. I still wonder who in the Bush WH was gittin' all hot over those Abu Graib sex torture photos. All over the planet, for decades to come... those photos. What a lasting**cough cough ** legacy for G Bush...

  23. katy Says:

that was kinda funny, wayne a....
spoke too soon? naaah... it will be gone soon...

but i agree - TP has made significant improvement
these past days... KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!

    THANK YOU, TP!
    .

  24. Wayne A. Schneider Says:

    Hi, katy,

I just wanted to let them know that I see the efforts being made to do what we have been asking for for a long, long time.

    I agree. "Soon". ;)

  25. TripMaster Monkey Says:

    katy, Wayne,

It's just unfortunate that all of our pleas fell on deaf ears, and that action wasn't taken until the advent of another site (whose name shall not be mentioned... ;) ) threatened to permanently spirit away the best and brightest contributers here.

  26. troqua Says:

katy and Wayne - I just saw a miracle on the newest post. Two posts struck down in one fell swoop! It was beautiful.

  27. Pete Bogs Says:

    "You're looking good, Riz."

  28. katy Says:

what are you talking about, trip?...
those pleas were heard and are being taken care of...
TPZoo had nothing to do with that... and it surely doesn't mean
any contributer has to be "permanently" spirited away... jeesh...

i think it's great that those who wanted to talk amongst
themselves have found a platform to do so - trooll free!

but TPZoo will never replace ThinkProgress...
    ...

  29. TripMaster Monkey Says:

Well, now...isn't that interesting. Now I'm being censored...for doing nothing more than stating the obvious.

    S.O.P. here at Think Progress.
