Today marked Attorney General Alberto Gonzales’ final day in office. Several top Justice Department and Bush administration officials gathered this afternoon at the Great Hall in the Department of Justice to bid the Attorney General a fond farewell. Senior Justice officials heaped unabashed praise on Gonzales.
Principal Deputy Assistant Attorney General Steven Bradbury:
“[H]undreds of innocent human beings have been freed from an unimagineable hell on Earth.”
Assistant Attorney General for National Security Kenneth Wainstein:
“He gave us the authority to conduct comprehensive oversight on all aspects of national security investigation.”
United States Attorney for the Western District of Texas Johnny Sutton:
“When he got to the part about protecting children, his eyes would light up.”
When it came for Gonzales’ time to speak, his voiced “crack[ed] with emotion” as he proclaimed his “highest regard and admiration for the employees of the department.” Watch highlights from the ceremony:
Gonzales leaves his post with an approval rating of 28 percent. The Washington Post reported today, “It will be the first time in more than a decade that Gonzales will not be serving his friend and longtime patron, President Bush.”
Transcript:
STEVEN BRADBURY: This is a surely a momentous day.
[…]
KATHLEEN CARD: Would you go to the Lord in prayer with me? Eternal God, we come to you from many faith traditions…and we are especially thankful for your humble servant, Alberto Gonzales.
[…]
BRADBURY: His leadership has been like a gentle but firm hand on the tiller.
[…]
JOHNNY SUTTON: When he would visit my office, he would speak not for very long, but with a great deal of passion about those priorities. But when he got to the part about protecting children, his eyes would light up.
[…]
BRADBURY: As a result of the department’s efforts under this Attorney General, hundreds of innocent human beings have been freed from an unimagineable hell on Earth.
[…]
KENNETH WAINSTEIN: And that is why he gave us the authority to conduct comprehensive oversight on all aspects of national security investigation.
[…]
SUTTON: And I had the honor of working with him pretty closely. I was three doors down for several years. And I got to see him up close.
[…]
WAINSTEIN: The Attorney General is a good man. Simply that. He is a good man.
[…]
KAREN TANDY: If you filled the stadium at FedEx Field, which happens to be the largest football stadium in the NFL, if you filled that will all of the teenagers who are no longer using drugs, you’d have to fill that stadium nine times. Empty it, and refill it.
[…]
ALBERTO GONZALES: And to all of you, please know that I leave today with the highest regard and admiration for the employees of the department.

Well, he won’t be visibly serving Dubious anymore.
September 14th, 2007 at 8:00 pmBe sure to check under the table at dinner…
Later, shitstain!
September 14th, 2007 at 8:00 pmKAREN TANDY: If you filled the stadium at FedEx Field, which happens to be the largest football stadium in the NFL, if you filled that will all of the teenagers who are no longer using drugs, you’d have to fill that stadium nine times. Empty it, and refill it.
WTF is this one talking about?
September 14th, 2007 at 8:05 pmFilled, as in seated?
Or stacked on top of each other?
That many who used to use, but don’t anymore?
Or are they not using drugs anymore cause they’re all dead?
Better thin down her kool-aid, seems a little strong.
Maybe that’s where all the drugs are…
…and the first thing his wife is gonna do…
…is mend those holes…
…in the knees of his suit pants…
September 14th, 2007 at 8:06 pm“When he got to the part about protecting children, his eyes would light up.â€
Probably thinking about the kids at the Texas Youth Commission….
September 14th, 2007 at 8:09 pmTell me, TP….why did my comment merit deletion?
September 14th, 2007 at 8:13 pmGoing, going, Gonzo, & good riddance.
The disgusting spectacle of having an Attorney General who is a perjurer & belongs in jail for obstruction of justice ends w/a “lavish farewell ceremony.” Can a Medal of Freedom presented by GWB be far behind?
September 14th, 2007 at 8:14 pmgonzales, step into my office BECAUSE YOU ARE FU*KING FIRED!
September 14th, 2007 at 8:15 pm“[H]undreds of innocent human beings have been freed from an unimagineable hell on Earth.â€
my gawd…
that’s like something you say at a funeral…
that’s what this has been… a 6 year long funeral…
September 14th, 2007 at 8:17 pm…
He’s protecting the kids by not prosecuting Mark Foley?
September 14th, 2007 at 8:18 pmTripmaster,
We do not permit death threats against others in the comments section. That’s why your comment was deleted. We will be enforcing these rules more stringently.
September 14th, 2007 at 8:21 pmAw geez, I think I’m gonna puke…
September 14th, 2007 at 8:22 pmAdmin sez:
That was not a death threat, Admin. I wasn’t advocating that Gonzo be murdered…I was advocating he be executed as punishment for his treason. There’s a difference…a difference I’d expect the staff at TP to understand.
September 14th, 2007 at 8:23 pmI’d imagine the REAL partying of career Justice employees took place after he left.
September 14th, 2007 at 8:23 pmGood riddance to bad rubbish. Now, Congress, issue a subpoena for him to testify and use Inherent Contempt if he refuses to testify. I would dearly love to see his ass thrown in jail, even if it is only the jail in the basement of Congress.
September 14th, 2007 at 8:31 pmThe most offensive thing I saw on that video was the invoking of God’s name. Religeon does not belong in politics much less “official government ceremonies”.
September 14th, 2007 at 8:31 pmI wonder if anyone noticed that Gonzales was the Pinata?
September 14th, 2007 at 8:35 pm“When he got to the part about protecting children, his eyes would light up.â€
Yeah, too damn many Republicans “light up” when they think about children - just not in a good way. Too bad they can’t get that excited about providing them with health insurance, keeping them safe from lead-painted toys or growing up to become cannon fodder.
September 14th, 2007 at 8:35 pmMeanwhile Gonzales is personally responsible for the torture and denial of justice to thousands of innocent human beings.
What a guy!
AF
September 14th, 2007 at 8:58 pmJust goes to show that NeoCON liars come in all colors!
What a disgrace to the latino race! Thank goodness we never “embraced” him. He’s BASURA!
September 14th, 2007 at 9:02 pmThe more important question is: Did they have cookies and brownies?
Don’t let the door hit your ass, Gonzo…
September 14th, 2007 at 9:10 pmGeez what a whiny bunch these cons are, they cry when they leave the mess they created, but had a great time cheering it on.
September 14th, 2007 at 9:11 pm2 on going investigations of this guy. 2.

September 14th, 2007 at 9:25 pmJeff Gannon jumped out of a cake and immediately proceeded to diaper Gonzo as the staffers cheered. It was a real touching moment and Gonzo’s voice cracked.
September 14th, 2007 at 9:30 pm“Over the past two and a half years, I have seen tyranny, dishonesty, corruption and depravity of types I never thought possible,” Gonzales said in prepared remarks at a Hispanic Heritage Month ceremony at Bolling Air Force Base. “I’ve seen things I didn’t know Bush or Cheney were capable of.” *

September 14th, 2007 at 9:36 pmDon’t miss Scott Horton’s send off.
Fredo’s Last Day
Alberto Gonzales spends his last day in the office as Attorney General today. On Monday, Paul Clement assumes his duties as Acting Attorney General. As the Washington Post observes today, Gonzales’s passing is being taken with a collective sigh of relief among his own senior staff at Justice. His leadership, they suggest, has been a severe ordeal for the Justice Department. Of course, Patrick Leahy and Harry Reid are quick to remind that the ordeal is not over—Congress will continue to pursue the issues raised by the U.S. Attorney’s scandal, the growing evidence of political prosecutions, doubtful positions taken on FISA, highly coercive interrogations, Guantánamo and a host of other matters… not to mention the serious accusation that Gonzales committed perjury in giving testimony to Congress.
Nevertheless, parting words of a sort are appropriate. more…
September 14th, 2007 at 9:43 pmGonzo lives for trannies.
September 14th, 2007 at 9:43 pmundoubtedly the best the thugs in the crime family could find to cover their worthless criminal asses. All the GOP is made up of is cowards, crooks, and liars. That is what the 28% who defends them is made up of…well morons, maybe.
September 14th, 2007 at 9:46 pmDon’t worry, Gonzales will still be polishing Bush’s knob.
September 14th, 2007 at 9:50 pmOn every level…..
September 14th, 2007 at 9:52 pmBTW the innocent ones he freed are probalaly dead and gone to heaven by his torture jerks.
September 14th, 2007 at 9:52 pmNEXT!!!
September 14th, 2007 at 9:58 pmI find it fitting that this story appears right above a piece on “lavish parties thrown by the DoJ at taxpayer expense” as Gonzo departs the DoJ under a cloud of scandal (and downpour of Right-wing praise).
September 14th, 2007 at 10:08 pmWhen I heard of Gonzales departure I also thought about partying !
September 14th, 2007 at 10:17 pmHALLEUIA!
This has got to be a sad day for his “client “.
Secrecy, torture and spying. Gonzo’s trinity of tyranny
September 14th, 2007 at 10:17 pmWhen it came for Gonzales’ time to speak, his voiced “crack[ed] with emotion†as he proclaimed his “highest regard and admiration for the employees of the department.â€
It’s too bad Gonzo didn’t have the “highest regard and admiration” for the American people, or the US Constitution. Good riddance, and take your legal relativism with you.
Now let’s get back to rebuilding some semblance of trust in the DoJ. Oh that’s right — we’ll have to wait until January 2009 to do that…
September 14th, 2007 at 10:21 pmWho else will provide the legal justification for Torture and the serious assault on the basic constitutional rights of the American public .
September 14th, 2007 at 10:23 pmBut heres a bright note …..NO STATUTE OF LIMITATIONS ON WAR CRIMES SPEEDY !
Your just desserts were not served at your little party but will be arriving soon , rest assured !
So, who will replace him?
Olsen’s out. As are most of the ideologues of the Bush mafia. The Dems are close enough to the mid terms to stonewall any Hard Right picks. Will Lieberman or Hatch choose to accept, and lessen the repubs power in the Senate? Or will we have to fight off more recess appointments?
September 14th, 2007 at 10:26 pmbarfly - i heard a very good idea today:

at least i think that’s what i heard…

Rumor is dat big bro Bush gonna nomnate little bro Jeb for da job!
September 14th, 2007 at 10:38 pmDid anyone listen to the video?
Holy crap.
What a load of holy crap.
I mean, they were thanking the “eternal God Almighty” for Gonzo! They were praising him as some kind of glorious savior of the children, and a calm and gentle hand.
:\
Someone pass me a barf bag.
September 14th, 2007 at 10:43 pmThe 28%-ers idea of fiscal prudence.

September 14th, 2007 at 10:49 pmGonzales has been unceremoniously tossed onto the GOP scrap heap with Libby, Rumsfeld, Rove, Bremer, Wolfowitz, Powell, and countless other unprincipled “conservative” sad sacks. Craig and Vitter will be joining them very soon.
September 14th, 2007 at 10:50 pmkaty,
Sounds good, but Bush might decide to play rope-a-dope with the disclosures, dribbling out enough to fog the issue until he’s out of office, and giving repubs ammo to maintain their continuing Assault on Reality.
September 14th, 2007 at 10:50 pmHe’s a good man, Lord ,who just happens to believe in torture .
September 14th, 2007 at 10:54 pmYea but did anyone listen to that load of horsecrap?
These guys ARE the religious zealot nutjobs everyones been accusing them of being!
Listen to that video clip. Here they are in a Government function, (even if it was a party, its still the government) declaring to the Eternal God of the universe how glorious Gonzo is.
Do you see the problem here? These nuts think they’re the chosen of God, and that their work is Gods work.
Which places little difference between these nuts running our government right now, and the terrorists.
September 14th, 2007 at 10:54 pmEternal God, we come to you from many faith traditions, and we are especially thankful for your servant, Alberto Gonzales
What the hell is that? They’re stating that Gonzo is acting on Gods behalf (servant). Its insane!!!

What’s Gonzo going to do to “protect the children” now? With his demonstrated abilities, I wouldn’t trust his as a school crosswalk guard. If someone’s kid was kidnapped, he’d go all Sgt. Shultz.
“Honestly, I have three crosswalks to supervise; I can’t be held responsible for everything that happens around here. My two student guards will confirm that I was only made aware of the abduction a scant two hours before calling authorities, due to a meeting I had called to discuss the Principal’s plan to fire all teacher’s union members, and replace them with Regent University grads. If only my subordinates hadn’t dropped the ball, this student would be alive today.”
September 14th, 2007 at 11:08 pmGonzales most likely will still be helping Bush in secret, like Karl Rove is doing from Texas.
September 14th, 2007 at 11:11 pm“His voice cracked with emotion…”
Cracked being the operative word…
September 14th, 2007 at 11:15 pmit’s back to Texas without a job for Gonzales. After listening to the top 10 Gonzales acts he will find it hard to get hired for anything. All the laws he broke and torture/spying acts he made law cause some of our soldiers to die. Bush used Gonzales for what he needed to get elected by pushing Gonzales out front to get the Hispanic vote. At lease the GOP let Gonzales know how they felt about his and wanted him out a long time ago. Bush was Gonzales’s only friend now he’s alone.
September 14th, 2007 at 11:17 pmLady Z: I think they actually meant to say “his emotionless voice made him sound like he was on crack”…

Bush will get his way with a hard-right loyalist pick. Either he’ll intimidate enough weak Democrats to get his choice through, or he’ll do another recess appointment. There’s no way Bush will select a consensus pick. He never has.
September 15th, 2007 at 12:12 amA democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government.
It can only exist until the voters discover that they can vote themselves largesse from the public treasury.
From that moment on, the majority always votes for the candidates promising the most benefits from the public treasury with the result that a democracy always collapses over lousy fiscal policy, always followed by a dictatorship.
The average of the world’s great civilizations before they decline has been 200 years.
These nations have progressed in this sequence:
From bondage to spiritual faith;
from faith to great courage;
from courage to liberty;
from liberty to abundance;
from abundance to selfishness;
from selfishness to Complacency;
from complacency to apathy;
from apathy to dependency;
from dependency back again to bondage.

My daughter, who didnt really go to church, nor did I, and never studied Aramaic, would sometimes sit bolt upright, from sleep, open her eye, speek what sounded like ancient hebrew/aramaic and then say “Amen” then lay back down sound asleep.

Did you honestly believe that people aren’t allowed to pray at government functions? Religious freedom is kind of a big deal in this country. A few people made a long trip to get here so they could have religious freedom. Sound familiar?
Stevens may very well be headed for jail. That doesn’t change the fact that he and Byrd vie for “King of Pork.” ;)

Yeah, those who established the Continental Congress were treasonous hypocrites and you have every right to oppose everything for which they stood. Out with the Constitution!

Did this person say hundreds? If someone is Attorney General of the United States, I would hope their alleged positive influence is going to affect more than just hundreds or it’s hardly worth mentioning. And especially when you’re an AG who promotes torture and domestic spying that adversely affects thousands.

Alberto Gonzalez was the first Hispanic to be named Secretary of Justice in the history of the USA. As such, he was the highest Hispanic government official ever to serve under the US flag. He failed us all! He allowed himself to be used for the purpose of corrupting the very same Constitution which provided for his opportunity and, in doing so, has degraded the chances for higher office of those who will come after him. His “loyalty” to a bad President has done great harm to all Hispanics in this country.

This may surprise you, but not everybody views a person as representative of all people who share any and all traits with him.
I do not see Gonzales as reflecting badly on Hispanics, I see him as reflecting badly on Bush cronies. That he happens to be Hispanic does not affect my view of him or any other Hispanic. It has absolutely nothing to do with his general incompetence and loyalty to a person over loyalty to the Constitution, traits he shares with many other Bush cronies.

September 15th, 2007 at 7:54 amIf the administration keeps going the way it is, Bush will be the sole survivor. Won’t that be poetic justice? Bush will be the sole surviver for an admisntration that for almost 7 years, has had no concept of reality.

September 15th, 2007 at 9:17 amJudging from the attitudes and perspectives projected by many of these comments, it’s high time for “progressives” to reread their own definition of what they are and are not.
Who is a progressive?
A PROGRESSIVE IS:
- Forward-looking
- Innovative
- Optimistic
- Pragmatic
- Fair
- Respectful
- Patriotic
A PROGRESSIVE IS NOT:
September 15th, 2007 at 9:26 am- Short-sighted
- Afraid of new ideas
- Naive
- Closed-minded
- Selfish
- Arrogant
- Xenophobic

The Porker Award is only given to current members of Congress. Stevens took “King of Pork” from Byrd. It’ll probably revert back to Byrd.

September 15th, 2007 at 12:12 pmThis whole Bush Presidency has been a nightmare where the phony patriots and phony people of religion have taken over and are calling the shots making a mockery of both patriotism and religion.
I would like to amend this Mark Twain quote “Patriotism is usually the refuge of the scoundrel. He is the man who talks the loudest.” In the days of Bush it should read “Patriotism and religion are usually the refuge of the scoundrel. He is the man who talks the loudest.”

Beto, as you rightly call him, is not going to remember anything. That’s what it is expected will happen. Just like it isn’t supposed to be remembered by those who were the victims in the hospitals of the 1950″s. Any refference to Alberto Gonzales having been NEUTERED is exactly what I mean. Psy-ops anyone?

The Texas juvenile justice sexual abuse scandal – in which Attorney General Alberto Gonzales and U.S. Attorney Johnny Sutton are accused of failing to take action – is a broader scandal that was covered up for two years, involving hundreds of serious complaints and investigations against dozens of staff members, according to officials.
The Texas Youth Commission scandal went unnoticed, says Texas Ranger Brian Burzynski, despite his numerous attempts, beginning in early 2005, to get local, state and federal prosecutors to investigate allegations teachers, administrators and guards had sex with minor male inmates….”

Is this your best dodge? The show has been consistently praised by clergy across the mainstream spectrum. Besides doesn’t the market respond to the desires of the viewers? Being the longest continuous situation comedy in history would seem to suggest that if your premise is correct that “liberal” Simpsons folks are the majority in this country
September 15th, 2007 at 6:58 pm“The Simpsons is hugely moral, with many episodes dealing with issues and dilemmas faced by young people. The willingness of the show’s writers to deal with questions of both morality and spirituality makes the programme an ideal tool.â€
The initiative has been given backing across the Church, with the Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr Rowan Williams speaking of his adoration of the show.
September 15th, 2007 at 7:02 pmOver the past two and a half years, I have seen tyranny, dishonesty, corruption and depravity of types I never thought possible,” Gonzales said in prepared remarks at a Hispanic Heritage Month ceremony at Bolling Air Force Base. “I’ve seen things I didn’t know man was capable of.
He must have been referring to everyone in the Bush Admin.
September 15th, 2007 at 9:04 pm“[H]undreds of innocent human beings have been freed from an unimaginable hell on Earth.â€
. . . did they mean the “millions” of Americans that no longer have Alberto to shred civil liberties and promote torture?
What a pack of schmucks licking his turd-blossomed boots. This country has indeed been attacked by invaders, not by illegal immigrants, but by these neocons.
September 15th, 2007 at 11:50 pmThe man has to look at his written notes 3 times to say he appreciates the dedicated men and women of the Justice Department. Says volumes about this guy that he can’t even get a simple sentence like that out without reading it. I’d say I’m glad he’s gone (and I am) but now we face the next idiot Chimpy will try to install. sheesh, Jan 20 2009 can’t come too soon.
September 15th, 2007 at 11:52 pmHis acting replacement is Paul Clement, and he does not use notes when speaking, thats a plus. Some of the cases he has argued.
Hamdan v. Rumsfeld: Clement lost this case on whether military commissions for Guantánamo Bay detainees are authorized under U.S. and international law.
Rumsfeld v. Padilla: In a 5-4 decision, the Court agreed with Clement’s argument that a U.S. citizen captured on American soil and designated as an enemy combatant can be detained by the military.
Hamdi v. Rumsfeld: The Court upheld the right of a U.S. citizen who was captured overseas and detained in the United States as an enemy combatant to contest his detention in U.S. courts. Clement argued against that right.
Glad he is in charge to make sure the Protect American Act is not abused.
Can’t imagine Bush would want him the be subjected to confirmation hearings, a lot of tough questions would be asked, he is also supervising the investigations into the AG firings and knows who knew what when, so something tells me he is the acting AG until 2009 and will not be nominated.
September 16th, 2007 at 4:20 amAlthough now that he can approve wiretapping of anyone w/o a court order, maybe congress would be scared off and not ask any tough questions, so maybe not,
The only “hundreds of people” who were saved from hell, are the ones who sold their souls and did Bush & Cheney’s (particularly Cheney’s) bidding! Namely everyone giving praise to Gonzo, let alone Gonzo himself. The rest of us billions were and still are and will remain in hell, until the mess this administration has created is straightened out -
September 16th, 2007 at 10:30 amunfortunately, that may take many, many years. thanks a lot, GONZO = YOU LITTLE TWERT (I am trying to remain classy on this board).
TORTURE, TORTURE, TORTURE = is a gentle, but firm hand on the tiller?????
September 16th, 2007 at 10:43 amAlso, WIRETAPPING is a gentle, but firm hand????? The woman who mentioned you have to fill and refill a stadium 9 times for all the teenagers no longer taking drugs (because of Gonzo)???? are they nuts? === I have to agree.,
the teenagers are no longer taking the drugs., because, unfortunately,
their parents are taking them to get through the pain of what this little
toad has done to the world, including the USA. I think everyone in that room must be on some sort of drug! (I do not intend to mock teenagers on drugs, believe me) — but this being could care less. And I just cannot take these lies. And I am sick of “let us pray to the Lord” nonsense. Gonzo believes in “the Lord” like I believe in Santa Claus.

That would be what is kown as “reaching people where they are.” They are attempting to take the small protion of the program that shows some sense of morality and using it to lead people. Obviously, the show has to have some positive elements. Otherwise, reasonably decent people couldn’t justify watching it. It’s not really something to brag about, though. ;)
