Arctic ice drops to record low levels.

Arctic ice drops to record low levels.

AP reports:

Arctic ice has shrunk to the lowest level on record, new satellite images show, raising the possibility that the Northwest Passage that eluded famous explorers will become an open shipping lane.

The European Space Agency said nearly 200 satellite photos this month taken together showed an ice-free passage along northern Canada, Alaska and Greenland, and ice retreating to its lowest level since such images were first taken in 1978. [...]

A U.N. panel on climate change has predicted that polar regions could be virtually free of ice by the summer of 2070 because of rising temperatures and sea ice decline, ESA noted.

Yea. For the first time in recorded history the northwest passage is going to be a shipping lane, but hey, global warmings not real.

I have a theory that Gore would not enter the race so long as he thinks the current candidates will address Global Warming to the extent he sees as necessary.

    BUT…

If events like this fair to become a more significant issue, we might see some stirring.

(Personally, I think he doesn’t want the hassle of “campaigning” again. If he said, “Just put my name on the ballot if you want, but I’m not going to debate or campaign”, he’d run… he’d probably lose with that strategy… but he’d run.

Why isn’t ThinkProgress covering the very large march against the war in DC today? People dedicated their time, money and came from all over the country and braved the viscious Gathering of Eagles motorcycle group and the “left” blogosphere says nothing. There were many, many Iraqi Veterans Against the War there getting arrested and TP doesn’t cover it at all?

DC Macing, Miami Rallying, and David Cline

Submitted by davidswanson on Sat, 2007-09-15 22:20. Media

I hear they’re macing people in DC – will try to get details. I just spoke at a great rally for impeachment in Miami, speech and video coming soon. And I’m very saddened to learn of the death of David Cline, leader of Veterans for Peace. We should all try to do as much as he did in his admirable life.

    Report from Lori Perdue:
Capitol police used pepper spray to try to deter people wanting to participate in the die-in as they went over the wall. Two unidentified males tried to go over the wall, and the police pushed them back with their riot shields. When they wouldn’t get down, they sprayed the men, and the wind spread the spray all over the front of the crowd. I got hit by overspray, and so did Krissy Klein, 13-year-old daughter of Tina Richards.

Also, Carlos Arredondo was jumped by eight members of the Gathering of Eagles. Beat him to the ground and kicked him repeatedly until a group of Veterans for Peace and Iraq vets pulled them off. He was at his truck, which is his memorial to his son, Alexander.

Baltimore Sun article with photos of Carlos.

    Youtube rally video.

I spoke with Carlos and Medea and Gael, and Carlos is unstoppable, going to press charges. A Code Pink woman was slapped in the face by the Gathering of Vultures. A woman named Amy who was with Carlos was pushed around. Carlos was the only one beaten up. The pro-deathers also threatened people over a bull horn and shouted things to let the Code Pinkers know they knew the details of activities in the Code Pink house. I’m told Huffpost and other sites are playing this rally as equal numbers on two sides, but it was more like 15,000 – 20,000 for peace and impeachment vs. just under 1,000 for war and tyranny.

Carlos said he was holding an American flag upside down, which is what led to them attacking him. Over 1,000 people lay down at the Capitol to be arrested, but the police were happy to let them lie where they were. So, they found a way to get through the fence, and a smaller number got arrested.

    ____

Why did I have to spend 10 minutes drilling down with Google to find complete coverage of this event? The single photo that accompanies the very short AP article on this protest was taken from such an angle as to suggest that just a handful of people showed up! It also is vague about the number of anti-war protesters, describing their number simply as “thousands”, while clearly pointing out that an apparent counter-protest by a pro-Iraq-war group numbered “almost 1000″.

This has the affect of minimizing the relevance of this protest, the way the mainstream media minimizes everything that is counter to their agenda. It makes me sick. Thank God for you guys and a little truth in reporting

    http://weblogs.baltimoresun.com/news/politics/blog/2007/09/protesters_march_on_the_capito.html

This protest is being CENSORED by US media. Why is this story on in a BLOG and not a FEATURE on the SUN? Why is CNN still not even mentioning this event???

This is a very serious issue. The evidence that increased air pollution has been suppressing global warming is strong. This observation suggests that the climate might change even more rapidly than we imagine after the tipping point is reached.

  10. TripMaster Monkey says:

    Carol,

Yes, I heard that over 160 people were arrested after they jumped a barrier at the Capitol building.

coverage of this event on the “liberal media”. If I hadn’t known ahead of time that there was a march today, and wasn’t subsequently actively searching for this information, I would never had known.

A free press is essential to the proper functioning of a free society. It’s clear we no longer have anything resembling a free press, which does not bode well for the future of our nation.

ok soooo what the earth may have gone up a degree in 100 yrs, but how do you explain the loss of the iceage. i dont think men created the global warming then and i dont think there were many forest fires releasing carbon either back then. you need to look at the good things about global ‘warming’ . less in heating bills, less oil and coal to heat homes, more time to grow sugar cane to replace the oil we are using, plus usingless mid east oil means not funding non friendly countries. less frostbite, less money need for cities to budget for snow removal, , less antifreeze needed in my car, less chance for ice on roads and less car accidents thus reducing my insurance rates. plus the more heating we can now use the sun to desalinate the ocean waters so that we can use’ reclaimed’ ocean water to water lawns, crops etc for lower food prices. do you want me to keep going?

These mouth breathers do not understand that if the polar caps melt, we will have a worldwide slowing or shutdown of the worlds ocean currents. These currents carry nutrients to the worlds plankton. Worst Case Scenario : If the currents stop, the plankton dies. If the plankton die, most of the oceans marine life will die.
If the oceans die, we will soon follow.

  35. Wayne A. Schneider says:

All I saw in tim rant’s about the “benefits” of global warming were how warmer weather would mean less spending on cold weather items. He doesn’t understand how weather changes affect migration patterns of animals (not to mention breeding seasons), increases algae growing on waters which chokes off sunlight, which kills others microscopic critters, which upsets the whole ecological food chain which means no food on the table. Lower prices at the gas pump, maybe, but no food on the table.

Second, you’re ignorance on the topic is so overwhelming, no one really knows where to begin, so I’ll leave you with this.

If you knew anything about the subject, you’d understand that reducing carbon emissions has NOTHING to do with changing “weather patterns”.

It has to do with reducing the density of the atmospheric build up, thus releasing more energy back into space and thus cooling the planet.

Next time, instead of getting your talking points from the Messiah U debating team, try learning something about the topic, which in this case, is global warming. Once you learn something about it, you might find it matters to you.

“In the Science paper, Monaghan and others show that there has been no significant change in Antarctic snowfall in the last ~50 years. And by the way, even it it was quoted accurately and in context, the fact is that the OVERWHELMING majority of the scientific commuity who does NOT have an axe to grind, is NOT funded by the energy community and who is just examining real evidence, agrees on this one, key scientific fact.

That carbon emissions are higher than every before on the planet, and that in turn is thickening the atmospheric density and causing the planet to heat up.

I’m not a climate scientist, so your assertion that I needed help if I didn’t believe human air pollution would automatically cause global warming was insulting. Thats not the problem. Its core temperature that matters. And the energy naturally reflects off of any surface matter it encounters. The problem is that less of it is escaping back into space, and is being trapped by our ever thickening atmosphere. We need to get off the fossil fuels, which contribute to a large percentage of this emissions build up.

The really funny part is, why wouldn’t we want to? Think about it. Our air in cities is choked with car fumes. Anyone living near a city knows that. The exhaust can be choking in downtown DC on a hot saturday afternoon, so bad your throat burns. So why wouldn’t we want to clean that up?

And why wouldn’t we want to be able to tell the middle east to kiss our ass and they can keep their black goo? huh? WHY?

If most of the scientific community is encouraging us that this will help cool the planet, and thus make a better life for our children, and if we know it will make our air cleaner now, and remove our parisitical dependence on the middle east, AND make us safer from terrorism, then WHY in Gods name, would anyone want to discourage that?

Bush is not only delusional, he’s attempting to wreak his brand of havoc on the entire planet at this point in debating global warming.

In fact, even if it were a debatable issue at this point, WHICH IT IS NOT (AT LEAST SCIENTIFICALLY), what would be wrong with taking precautions and changing our vulgar lifestyle?? Nothing. Not true, in my experience as an atheist for over 40 years. I don’t know where that diatribe came from, but atheism is the opposite of a belief system, rejecting the idea of “faith” in the unproveable and invisible, and embracing scientific approaches and truths. While there certainly are anti-religious atheists preaching their own doctrine, there is no power base there, and no daily brainwashing through television and atheist steeples dotting the landscape. You’re using an isolated personal experience as a broad brush, is my guess.

Had Enough? I’m with you on drafting Al Gore who has turned out to be a “contemporary prophet” because every one of his platform issues (problems) has reared it’s ugly head under Bush. It’s almost as though the problems had to become exponentially horrendous to highlight them to the people who still didn’t get it.

Maybe Al Gore will realize that, just like global warming, Bush has created a “global catastrophe” and it will take one with a respected character worldwide as well as one with a sophisticated “worldview” to save this country from self-destruction and bring peace to the planet.

Global warming is a huge issue so I’m not attempting to trivialize it in the least; World Peace, however, is a much larger issue for him to tackle.

I believe that Gore is up to the task and can do it like no other. …. Certainly not any of the candidates on both sides of the aisle right now.

A Bloomberg/Gore or Gore/Bloomberg ticket is what is essential to help reinstate real patriotism in this country, not the hypocritical brand which has prevailed over the past 6 years.

    Please do!

Gore would be a one issue candidate. All global warming, all the time. And it’s already been shown that the global warming issue does not resonate with the people. Americans are tired of the daily global disaster stories…heck, disaster flicks don’t even make any money at the box office anymore. The public has become jaded by over half a century of “imminent” destruction.

Unless Al Gore was going to use a fleet of hybrid vehicles for his campaign travel, keep his private plane grounded, and move into a 2 bedroom economy flat, we’d have a field day capping on his hypocrisy.

I don’t think he would want anyone to dig too deep into his phony carbon offset scam either. A presidential campaign would shine too many lights into too many closets.

Besides, the fix is in: Hillary Clinton has been the Democrat “heir apparent” for nearly 8 years.

Ever hear of Jack Abramoff by any chance? Perhaps you do live in shell if you haven’t?

Gore being a “one issue candidate” is so amazingly far from the truth that I question not only your level of intelligence but your sanity as well. There are plenty of good shrinks out there, friend.

Al Gore’s notoriety is “worldwide” and he is a hundred times more respected by the international community that Bush is right now as president.

He’s gained the faith and trust of the american people so it’s a “no brainer” if he would arrive on the scene – he’d win hands down just like he did in 2000 before Tom Feeney, Katherine Harris, and Brother Jebbie “hacked” the totals in Florida. Everyone knows he won the popular vote and the election was “stolen” from him – that is, perhaps everyone unlike yourself who lives in a dark corner of your mold-encrusted cellar.

Get some sunshine sometime – it will do you a world of good. Shake off those demons and come out into the real world sometime.

O.Bigfoot: And don’t give excuses like the hybrid vehicle argument. This country could have been “less addicted” (hah! your president’s words) to oil if pressure had been put on american car makers by YOUR president and YOUR congress 6 years ago. Giving the argument that one flies on a commercial airliner to get to a talk is moronic. What other options has Bush and his cadre of crooks left the american people – train pehaps?? or maybe cruising to destinations?

Bigfoot: Sadly, your arguments are pathetically bogue and don’t hold water. Get yourself educated before making a blathering fool of yourself on these threads.

You are right about that. People talking about global warming isn’t going to do a damn thing. People working for a solution is all that is going to save this earth. I frequently ask troll posters if they are willing to risk the lives of their children and grandchildren that they are right and global warming doesn’t exist. They all say “yes”. That is truly frightening. Even if I was a conservative and bought their clap trap, I would still want us to do something about global warming because the consequences are not worth it if the experts are right.

Anyone who does not is a total misanthrope and selfishly denying life to his ancestors at this point.

Many people I know have take the 7 point pledge and have made adjustments to their lifestyles. Anyone who doesn’t at this point is a selfish slob.

I don’t think you read correctly. When it was suggested that Al Gore be drafted to run for prez, I replied with “Please do!” Does that indicate fear to you? If so, may I suggest a good dictionary?

Al Gore has made himself a one issue candidate through his own actions on the global warming front. No one but bleeding heart libs remember anything else about him. Gore has become the front man cheerleader for the global warming crackpots who tell us we all need to cut back on our decadent lifestyles…well, everyone but him anyways.

As for Gore’s worldwide notariety…well, my friend, all the respect in the world won’t get him elected prez of these here United States of America. He needs to get the vote of citizens of the United States. The rest of the world doesn’t count, either in the popular vote, nor the electoral college.

My arguments may be “pathetically bogue” to you, it doesn’t matter to me. I’m not here to convince anyone of anything. I am just here to present the fact that there is great opposition to the claptrap presented by kook left ideologues such as yourself. Two terms of G. W. Bush is proof enough of that.

As for Al Gore running for prez, I will close by quoting the Democrats previous wiz-kid next President, John Kerry-Heinz:

Ok, lets put the 9-11 thing to rest. To start with, lets see what we know, we know that a few islamic nut jobs flew planes at full throttle (500+mph) hitting the exact floors that the conspiracy theorists say were pre wired to explode/implode. Odd how the explosives didnt go off right away during that incredible heat or didnt cut any of the wires that were part of the explosives. Its also amazing that these ‘pilots’ who didnt know how to land were able to negociate thru the hot air currents and swirling winds around the building at 500 mph and hit the exact location of the explosives. Its also amazing that when the Bush administration went and proposed this plan that not one person stood up and said ‘no I cannot murder 50-100000 Americans in the Pentagon and World trade center’. Washington cant keep any secrets. No way could George Bush have pulled this off, because all we hear from the left is how dumb he is/was. Bin Laden was pissed that Clinton tried to lob a bomb at him, which is why he planned 911. What about the 1st WTC attack when Clinton was in office? Was that a Bush family plan. just give it up, ITS SOOO STUPID
