Earlier this week, Sgt. Omar Mora and Sgt. Yance Gray, who recently co-wrote a New York Times op-ed critical of the Iraq debate, were killed in a vehicle accident in Western Baghdad. The two fallen soldiers have since been hailed for serving their country and speaking out on Iraq. But one former conservative state Senator in Sgt. Gray’s home state of Montana, Dave Rye, has chosen to attack him for the op-ed, claiming he and his fellow soldiers weren’t intelligent enough to write it on their own:
Pardon my skepticism, and certainly no disrespect for the dead Montana soldier, but in my time in the Army I never heard such a word as “recalcitrant” escape the lips of any Staff Sergeant. I doubt if it’s spoken all that much in Ismay, either. The soldiers had the help and probably the encouragement of a writer with an agenda, from a newspaper which has always had one. Its continually declining circulation now mainly consists of those who want desperately to consider themselves sophisticated as well as compassionate, even if that means always branding the U.S. as the chief villain on the world stage—in fact, especially if it does.
Mr. Rye should then also criticize President Bush, who doesn't understand half of what people read to him or what people write for him.
But President Bush was too cowardly to ever fight for the USA and yet he's responsible for the deaths of thousands of intelligent and innocent soldiers and Iraqi civilians.

Dave Rye is a hateful, self-righteous sh!tbrain who needs to STFU!!!
September 15th, 2007 at 5:32 pmSo is he saying our soldiers are to ignorant to write that? Didn't John Kerry get his ass handed to him for the comments he made (which was totally spinned out of context)? What a sorry asshole.
And I hope the mother of Mora has that shit investigated into the ground. I hate to be paranoid but it seems damn suspicious the timing of their deaths.

September 15th, 2007 at 5:35 pmOT -sort of - I noticed on CNN today that Sadr is pulling his 32 seats from the parliament. This leaves a majority Sunni government in Iraq, just as it was prior to 2003. Interesting that a majority Shia nation is now once again being ruled by a Sunni government.

September 15th, 2007 at 5:39 pmHowz it that criticizing a military figure who is stating a pro-war agenda is unforgiveable. Criticizing a fallen soldier who advocated for the war is unforgiveable.
Criticizing the intelligence of a fallen soldier who argued against the war is perfectly acceptable ?

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - The political movement loyal to anti-American cleric Moqtada al-Sadr quit Iraq's ruling Shi'ite Alliance on Saturday, leaving Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki's coalition in a precarious position in parliament.
The move further weakens the ruling coalition, which even before the defection had failed to push through laws aimed at reconciling Iraq's warring majority Shi'ite and minority Sunni Arabs.
Maliki's government now enjoys the support of only about half of Iraq's 275 lawmakers, although it could survive with the support of a handful of independent lawmakers.
September 15th, 2007 at 5:41 pm"I never heard such a word as “recalcitrant†escape the lips of any Staff Sergeant..."
The only words he heard his staff sergeant say are "quit crying you gutless scumbag!"
September 15th, 2007 at 5:42 pmWow. Way to attack a service person --- someone who honorably served this country -- without him being able to defend himself --- because HE GAVE HIS LIFE for this country.
Mr. Rye's comment disgusts me.
September 15th, 2007 at 5:42 pmThis reminds me of Kent State. The Sunday after Kent State and the death of 4 students my wife and I walked out of church, never to go back because the minister was preaching how it was God's will that these students die. I was in my 20's, changed a lot of folks view. Keep it up; we will get out of this damn war yet.

I get it "declining circulation" means lack of credibility. Of course with the increase of Internet news, ALL newspapers have declining circulation. You have to hand it to Rye, though--he is another example of why what's wrong with America is not the Democratic Party--as Hannity, Limbaugh, and O'Reilly would have everyone believe. This is what "we are the GOP and we got nothing for you" looks like.

September 15th, 2007 at 6:33 pmWhat has seemed to escaped notice is how these soldiers died. The link to Editors and Publishers web site says that "The accident occurred when the cargo truck the men were riding in overturned." There is no indication as to why their vehicle overturned. Could it have been because they were traveling at a high rate of speed? Could that have been due to the fact that they were being fired upon by the insurgents? A truck does not simply overturn on its own. Could the military be covering this up as it covered up what happened to Pat Tillman? Since the administration and the military have shown little hesitation in lying since this ill-conceived invasion and occupation took place [especially involving torture at Abu Ghraib], it would not be far fetched to think that the truth is being withheld regarding the deaths of these soldiers.
Speaking of cover-up, a must see movie involving this topic is "In the Valley of Elah" starring Tommy Lee Jones [playing the father], Susan Sarandon, and Charlize Theron. It is based upon a true story of a soldier who, a few day after returning to the U.S. from Iraq, is found dead under mysterious circumstances in the desert. It opened this week in limited theaters but plays next week in many more theaters across the country.

Republicans. They think because they're dumb, everyone else has to be too.
September 15th, 2007 at 7:09 pmJust like they think government is bungling and incompetent, because THEY are bungling and incompetent. Then, when republicans get elected to office, they prove just how bungling and incompetent government is.
Repubicans will figure out one day that its time to shut up, step aside, and let smart people handle things, so they can go to church and tell each other what great and patriotic saints they are.
September 15th, 2007 at 7:12 pmRepublicans want war because they want to usher in Armegeddon, and the second coming of Christ. They believe that the earth and all its resources are at their disposal, because Christ is coming in 10 or 20 years anyway, and then the earth will be itself resurrected into a perfect state (with the rest of us off burning in hot lava or something). Conservative Christians and Republicans beliefs are strong.
And the rest of us have been paying for their belief systems for the last 2000 years.

I love my chia pet. I love my pet cockroaches, one which I named George W. Bush and another Dick Cheney. Oops. Squish. Impeach these two Republican cockroaches in the White House NOW, and rid our great nation of this Repubican infestation.

September 15th, 2007 at 8:00 pmThe Senators comments are nothing short of moronic. I was deployed in Iraq for 30 months straight. I was there with 1st CAV, 3RD ID, 4ID and 1ST CAV again. I have met many staff sergeants, first sergeants and CSM's who had a greater grasp of the English vernacular than our own President. In fact, while in Iraq, I have had the honor working side by side with some of the brightest people I have met in my life while and I would never trade my experience in Iraq for anything else.
If the soldiers spoke out about what they have seen in Iraq, then possibly, they witnessed situations that went against their good conscience. Only time will tell.
Another thing to keep in mind folks. Personnel in the military can NOT speak out against the President and foreign policy. IT IS AGAINST REGULATION. So, to suggest that more soldiers would speak out against the war if there was a problem, or anything else that runs contrary to the President is also moronic. It is AGAINST military regulation. But, this is the way it is supposed to happen. You need soldiers who will follow orders without debate. Like it or not, the military was designed to be a tool for the enforcement of foreign policy. Good or bad, makes no difference.
The Senator of Montana is simply an idiot and most likely, corrupt. There is a reason why most Americans no longer trust their own government.
Santi
September 15th, 2007 at 8:07 pmAnd what does Rye think of Bullshit Bush who can't string five words coherently in a sentence.
September 15th, 2007 at 8:33 pmHow dare he assume that the seven writers are too stupid to know a word like recalcitrant? If people think, if they read, if people know how to use a dictionary or a thesaurus, they use multi-syllable words easily, and it is much easier to do in written form because of the availability of collaboration, editing, and more careful thought than an ad lib conversation. They were sending an op-ed to the NYT- did he not think they would write carefully? Obviously the writers were/are a group of thoughtful, intelligent men who were greatly affected by this god-awful war and its pathetic leaders.
I am sure the families of the dead and the survivors are pleased to learn what Rye thinks of their intelligence.
Seems like the Montana Senator is the one who's an ignorant, thoughtless lout.
Dave Rye, has chosen to attack him for the op-ed, claiming he and his fellow soldiers weren’t intelligent enough to write it on their own.

September 15th, 2007 at 9:08 pmWhy do they get away with saying so much and the Dems' every word is critiqued in the press.
#41-Santi-
It is not, despite your contention, "moronic" for soldiers to speak out against the war nor is it even against regulations for them to do so. If you had been in the military, you [perhaps] would have been aware that the UCMJ says that those in the military have not only a right but a duty and an obligation to say no to those orders which they believe to be illegal. At the Nuremberg trials, they hanged German soldiers and officials who tried to hide behind the excuse that they were only following orders. The U.S. Army Field Manual also states that participating in crimes against peace, crimes against humanity and war crimes are reasons to hold those responsible for those acts which are specifically cited in Section II-Crimes Under International Law Sub Sections 498 thru 504.
You may want to also acquaint yourself with David Cortright's definitive work on the GI movement that took place during something that was called in this country the Vietnam War, which is entitled Soldiers in Revolt-GI Resistance During the Vietnam War. Last year saw the release of the powerful documentary Sir! No Sir!, which focused on the many alleged morons who said NO to the war machine during the Vietnam War that took place at or near military bases both at home and abroad during that time period. You may want to read Mission Rejected-U.S. Soldiers Who Say No to Iraq by Peter Laufer to discover that there are more morons than you think, as well as those in the IVAW [Iraq Veterans Against the War] and also Lt. Watada, who have had the courage and integrity not to participate in the subjugation and occupation and brutalization of the Iraqi people. This country needs, despite your erroneous belief, more people like Lt. Watada and those in the IVAW who are willing to emulate the heroism of those who are movingly portrayed in the film Sir! No Sir!.
September 15th, 2007 at 9:20 pmand then there's this:

I must have, like, been some kind of deep penetration, covert, Commie operative -- and I WASN'T EVEN AWARE OF IT.

September 16th, 2007 at 9:43 amI'm so sick of this anti-intellectualism from the Right. I am a sergeant, currently enlisted, and have a bag of ten cent words I use regularly when I blog.

September 16th, 2007 at 10:57 amWhat would you have us do, Jason?
September 16th, 2007 at 11:37 amActually, the word "recalcitrant" is not obscure but current in the War on Terror debate. Just google it. It's being used by both the Christian Right and the Progessive Left. It's not some arcane $20 college word.
September 16th, 2007 at 11:41 amNow, Now, let us be a bit more considerate and circumspect(Sunday-go-to-meeting words). When Mr Rye was in the service there were probably a lot of draftees and guys who were one step ahead of the local sheriff.
September 16th, 2007 at 11:43 amfootsore
Ad Hominen dismissals are illogical, irrelevant and rebut nothing . They are particularly foul when used against those unable to defend themselves and are backed up with hasty generalizations drawn from claims of personal experience. Dave Rye is obviously the man with an agenda here. It is becoming increasingly difficult for him and others of like mind and limited reasoning skills to deflect the now near continuous intrusion of inconvenient realities upon their uber nationalist delusions.
September 16th, 2007 at 2:21 pm#42 - Marie, you nailed it. Much care was exerted to make the message clear. The average right-winger thinks and speaks in simplistic terms and are therefore mistrustful of anything that can't be desrcibed by their 5,000 word vocabulary.
September 16th, 2007 at 3:03 pmAs a Vietnam veteran who eventually served in the Navy for 31 years and retired as a Captain, please let me assure you that I knew and used multi-syllable words even before I took a 3 year break in my career to attend college.
I did my first 4 years as an enlisted man. At one point in 1968, I was in a division where "just for fun" we posted a new vocabulary word every day. And then each of us would try to use the new word three times in normal conversation that day.
However, I think I learned the word recalcitrant while I was in 8th grade when my homeroom teacher told the class that she was not going to tolerate our recalcitrant behavior on the playground. Or perhaps it was when I took Latin in the 9th grade and learned the word "recalcitrare."
I hope that someday Dave Rye understands that most enlisted men and women join the service because they love their country, to improve themselves, or perhaps to get out of poverty; but not because they are stupid.

I write because, as I and another poster mentioned, Todd is not the only recent death of Minot-based people.
Minot-based Airman Adam Barrs died on July 2.
Minot-based Airman Weston Kissel died on July 17.
One died in a motorcycle accident while on leave in Tennessee. The other was found dead in his home.
In addition John Frueh, a B-52 pilot based in Florida, apparently committed suicide in a secluded area while on vacation on August 30. Although not widely known, John apparently was actually a Major with Air Force Special Operations Command.
Four deaths. One unexplained, one by accident and two by suicide. I post because I am deeply troubled by this strange and extremely unlikely set of events. I'm sure you catch what I'm hinting at.
I'm asking someone who sees this thread to alert Sarah to my post and pass it along to Todd's family.
Minot Amm posted that six deaths have occurred since last October. I really would like to hear from Minot Amm also.
Above all else. please please see to it that your local sheriff is advised of my concerns. Particularly if Todd's death was not expected, occurred when he was alone in his home or resulted from gunshot.
The Sheriff, you and anyone else can reach me at:
Thanks in advance. I know I'm intruding horribly at your time of loss, but I think it's extremely important that Todd's death be investigated thoroughly.

September 16th, 2007 at 9:08 pmI know I'm just a lowly ex-enlisted man formerly a Hospital Corpsman in the US Navy (HM2) but I take umbrage at the vile characterization of our enlisted as some form of sub-moronic rabble unable to complete the junior scramble in the Sunday paper. While I was elisted I often played chess with one of the Marines stationed on the AFB, taught myself DBase IV (this was 1988) so we could electronically track immunizations for over four thousand reservists, and learned hexadecimal from the Senior Chief we played D&D with on our lunch breaks. Compared to the people I was stationed with I was in no way exceptional. While I could never pass for an English teacher I am also not to be mistaken for the prelingual quasi-simian half-man that the good Senator mistakes all enlisted men as.
Senator Rye is an odious turd who should be an unendurable embarassment to all of the people of Montana who he represents. Violently penetrate him and the equine he perambulated in on.
September 17th, 2007 at 12:08 amMURDERS! MURDERS! MURDERS! OMG! They were HEROS! Taken down by Psychopaths! Fellers, I think it's time we loaded our weapons....
September 17th, 2007 at 2:55 amAccording to Dave Rye's biography on the web site of the broadcaster where he works he served 14 months in Vietnam. As a Vietnam vet myself I do not doubt that he never heard a Staff Sergeant use a term like "recalcitrant." As a Sergeant in Vietnam I never had any occasion to use a word like that. That does not mean I was not intelligent enough to use the term in writing.
The statement that he served 14 months in Vietnam raises the question was he drafted? The only reason to be in Vietnam 14 months would be to get an early discharge from a 2 year term of service (in other words, he was drafted). Basic training and Advance Training generally took about 5-6 months in the mid sixties, which was the same time I volunteered for 3 years of active duty. You could get out up to 6 months early if you extended your time overseas. Five months training plus 12 months in Vietnam would have meant he had to extend 2 months to get out 6 months early.
Oh yes, this crumb bum had a huge amount of experience in how people talk in the military. He is not qualified to judge how intelligent military people are. Just in case anyone wants to know how qualified I am, I served a total of 16 years in the Army and the Army National Guard. I also have a masters degree in religion.
I met many people in the military who were perfectly able to use terms like "recalcitrant." But no they did not use such language in combat. Such language would be inappropriate in such a situation.
Intelligence is not shown by using fancy language; it is shown by using the appropriate language for the situation. Recalcitrant is not appropriate in the field but is perfect in describing the situation in a combat zone in an op-ed piece in the New York Times.
September 17th, 2007 at 10:56 amCut Mr. Rye some slack. For most of his adult life he was an anchor on a local Billings television station . . . the consultants taught him not to use any three syllable words in his news casts . . . which, by the way, were written for him by field reporters!
September 17th, 2007 at 4:16 pmRye must therefore think that soldiers cannot be intelligent or know more than a couple hundred english words.
Just look at the Commander-in-Chief and his vocabulary...Does Rye think for a moment that GWB writes his own speeches?
Does that take away from the message?

September 17th, 2007 at 5:46 pmHey, I was one of those brainy Sergeants who used twenty-five cent words and understood just how monumentally irresponsable the government of the United States was being. But guess what, I was right! And what's more, me being right hasn't helped one damn bit. The country is walking openly down the path toward facism and I am not sure that the Democratic party will be in any mood to disassemble an imperial presidency when it has its own rubber stamp of a congress come 2008.
