Hey, I was one of those brainy Sergeants who used twenty-five cent words and understood just how monumentally irresponsable the government of the United States was being. But guess what, I was right! And what's more, me being right hasn't helped one damn bit. The country is walking openly down the path toward facism and I am not sure that the Democratic party will be in any mood to disassemble an imperial presidency when it has its own rubber stamp of a congress come 2008.

Rye must therefore think that soldiers cannot be intelligent or know more than a couple hundred english words.

Just look at the Commander-in-Chief and his vocabulary...Does Rye think for a moment that GWB writes his own speeches?

Does that take away from the message?

Cut Mr. Rye some slack. For most of his adult life he was an anchor on a local Billings television station . . . the consultants taught him not to use any three syllable words in his news casts . . . which, by the way, were written for him by field reporters!

According to Dave Rye's biography on the web site of the broadcaster where he works he served 14 months in Vietnam. As a Vietnam vet myself I do not doubt that he never heard a Staff Sergeant use a term like "recalcitrant." As a Sergeant in Vietnam I never had any occasion to use a word like that. That does not mean I was not intelligent enough to use the term in writing.

The statement that he served 14 months in Vietnam raises the question was he drafted? The only reason to be in Vietnam 14 months would be to get an early discharge from a 2 year term of service (in other words, he was drafted). Basic training and Advance Training generally took about 5-6 months in the mid sixties, which was the same time I volunteered for 3 years of active duty. You could get out up to 6 months early if you extended your time overseas. Five months training plus 12 months in Vietnam would have meant he had to extend 2 months to get out 6 months early.

Oh yes, this crumb bum had a huge amount of experience in how people talk in the military. He is not qualified to judge how intelligent military people are. Just in case anyone wants to know how qualified I am, I served a total of 16 years in the Army and the Army National Guard. I also have a masters degree in religion.

I met many people in the military who were perfectly able to use terms like "recalcitrant." But no they did not use such language in combat. Such language would be inappropriate in such a situation.

Intelligence is not shown by using fancy language; it is shown by using the appropriate language for the situation. Recalcitrant is not appropriate in the field but is perfect in describing the situation in a combat zone in an op-ed piece in the New York Times.

I know I'm just a lowly ex-enlisted man formerly a Hospital Corpsman in the US Navy (HM2) but I take umbrage at the vile characterization of our enlisted as some form of sub-moronic rabble unable to complete the junior scramble in the Sunday paper. While I was elisted I often played chess with one of the Marines stationed on the AFB, taught myself DBase IV (this was 1988) so we could electronically track immunizations for over four thousand reservists, and learned hexadecimal from the Senior Chief we played D&D with on our lunch breaks. Compared to the people I was stationed with I was in no way exceptional. While I could never pass for an English teacher I am also not to be mistaken for the prelingual quasi-simian half-man that the good Senator mistakes all enlisted men as.

Senator Rye is an odious turd who should be an unendurable embarassment to all of the people of Montana who he represents. Violently penetrate him and the equine he perambulated in on.

http://geronimomanifesto.blogspot.com/

I write because, as I and another poster mentioned, Todd is not the only recent death of Minot-based people.

Minot-based Airman Adam Barrs died on July 2.

Minot-based Airman Weston Kissel died on July 17.

One died in a motorcycle accident while on leave in Tennessee. The other was found dead in his home.

In addition John Frueh, a B-52 pilot based in Florida, apparently committed suicide in a secluded area while on vacation on August 30. Although not widely known, John apparently was actually a Major with Air Force Special Operations Command.

Four deaths. One unexplained, one by accident and two by suicide. I post because I am deeply troubled by this strange and extremely unlikely set of events. I'm sure you catch what I'm hinting at.

I'm asking someone who sees this thread to alert Sarah to my post and pass it along to Todd's family.

Minot Amm posted that six deaths have occurred since last October. I really would like to hear from Minot Amm also.

Above all else. please please see to it that your local sheriff is advised of my concerns. Particularly if Todd's death was not expected, occurred when he was alone in his home or resulted from gunshot.

The Sheriff, you and anyone else can reach me at:

Thanks in advance. I know I'm intruding horribly at your time of loss, but I think it's extremely important that Todd's death be investigated thoroughly.

As a Vietnam veteran who eventually served in the Navy for 31 years and retired as a Captain, please let me assure you that I knew and used multi-syllable words even before I took a 3 year break in my career to attend college.

I did my first 4 years as an enlisted man. At one point in 1968, I was in a division where "just for fun" we posted a new vocabulary word every day. And then each of us would try to use the new word three times in normal conversation that day.

However, I think I learned the word recalcitrant while I was in 8th grade when my homeroom teacher told the class that she was not going to tolerate our recalcitrant behavior on the playground. Or perhaps it was when I took Latin in the 9th grade and learned the word "recalcitrare."

I hope that someday Dave Rye understands that most enlisted men and women join the service because they love their country, to improve themselves, or perhaps to get out of poverty; but not because they are stupid.

#42 - Marie, you nailed it. Much care was exerted to make the message clear. The average right-winger thinks and speaks in simplistic terms and are therefore mistrustful of anything that can't be desrcibed by their 5,000 word vocabulary.

Ad Hominen dismissals are illogical, irrelevant and rebut nothing . They are particularly foul when used against those unable to defend themselves and are backed up with hasty generalizations drawn from claims of personal experience. Dave Rye is obviously the man with an agenda here.
Now, Now, let us be a bit more considerate and circumspect(Sunday-go-to-meeting words). When Mr Rye was in the service there were probably a lot of draftees and guys who were one step ahead of the local sheriff.

Actually, the word "recalcitrant" is not obscure but current in the War on Terror debate. Just google it. It's being used by both the Christian Right and the Progessive Left. It's not some arcane $20 college word.
