Tonight, Al Gore won an Emmy for Current TV, his global television network that allows viewers to “create and influence what airs on TV.” The audience gave Gore a long standing ovation as he and his Current TV partner, Joel Hyatt, walked onstage to receive the award for “interactive television services.” From Gore’s thank you speech:
[W]e are trying to open up the television medium so that viewers can help to make television and join the conversation of democracy and reclaim American democracy by talking about the choices we have to make
Watch it:
In February, Gore’s film on global warming, An Inconvenient Truth, won an Oscar for Best Documentary.
Transcript:
OKA: We thought it only fitting that we use the technology of the Internet to announce the Emmy honoree for creative achievement in interactive television.
So please welcome, all the way from his office in Los Angeles, the president of MySpace and everyone’s first virtual friend, Mr. Tom Anderson. Tom. Are you there?
ANDERSON: Yeah, thanks Masi. I’m honored to present this Emmy to a new sort of network that really lived up to its name, Current TV. Founded in 2005 by Al Gore and Joel Hyatt, Current TV is created every day by the people who watch it. Gentlemen, congratulations, come on up, and get your Emmy.
(APPLAUSE)
HYATT: Thank you. Thank you. First, I want to do what you just did, and thank Al Gore for being a terrific partner, a great chairman, and a real visionary. I also want to thank all the great people who are a part of Current. Al and I set out to open up television and share the powerful TV platform with our young adult audience. The viewer response has been phenomenal, though we share this Emmy with a large and growing community participating with Current on television and on the Internet.
GORE: We have the greatest CEO in the world in Joel Hyatt, and I want to thank others [names] and the entire team at Current. And as Joel said, we are trying to open up the television medium so that viewers can help to make television and join the conversation of democracy and reclaim American democracy by talking about the choices we have to make. More to come. Current.com. Next month. Thank you Academy.

Technically, Al Gore didn’t win an Oscar, his film did. The Oscar went to Laurie David and her co-producer.

Giggle.
The only thing better for conservatives than Gore – Edwards would be Hillary – Obama.

September 16th, 2007 at 11:25 pmAl Gore + Google = CurrentTV = New World Order brainwashing to convince us we’re “one people” in need of “one government”.
Seriously, pay attention to the programming and the titles of the programming and you’ll catch on to it.
CurrentTV is there to convince us that Globalization = Good.
And One Government = The Future.

No, I am thinking Harriet Meyers and Albutto Gonzales.
September 16th, 2007 at 11:57 pmhe wouldn’t stand a chance against The Alan Keyes Experience!
September 17th, 2007 at 12:22 amI’m surprised Gore didn’t win the “Excessive Energy Consumption” Award. Gore has the unmitigated gall to tell everybody else how to live and conserve. Talk is cheap - his kids are grown - this hypocrite and his bride don’t need the McMansion….or the private planes….or the SUV’s……..
September 17th, 2007 at 1:34 amPlease let it be what I hope it is.

That’s true. Either way, it’d give you guys a well-deserved four-year vacation from politics. You can go to the beach, work on your backswing, write your memoirs, or just kick back and do nothing at all while we progressives fix the multitude of messes you’ve made. You’ve earned it!
September 17th, 2007 at 7:42 amAl Gore continues to awe with his accomplishments while the man who stole the presidency from him continues to “disgust” with his lack of accomplishments and the tone and tenor of the corruption of everything he touches. Amazing study in contrasts.
GORE/OBAMA IN 08! GORE/EDWARDS IN 08!
Clearly, after bringing global warming to the entire world, it’s obvious that this world, not to mention this country which is heading to bottom of the heap, needs a visionary like Al Gore.
September 17th, 2007 at 8:06 amCurrent TV won an Emmy for the work of others that is grossly undercompensated. Original programming that is made by everyday people who are paid just $500 and lose full rights of their work to Current. How should that be rewarded?

Also Al Gore did not invent television just helped in creating a venue to allow the average person to contribute. That is for your numbnuts out there still using that argument that Al invented the internet.
September 17th, 2007 at 10:16 am#11 - I agree! What unmitigated gall to use gas, appliances, electricity, etc., and then pretend to be against global warming! It’s almost as hypocritical as John Edwards earning a lot of money, and then pretending to care about the poor! ME - I like people that use Jesus Christ to start wars, and espouse the Christianity while igniting mass-murder on upwards of one million innocent Iraqis! At least Bush and the Christian right don’t do anything near as hypocritical as pretending to care about global warming!
September 17th, 2007 at 10:44 amEvery Bush lover must be kicking themselves now.
September 17th, 2007 at 10:55 amGore at least is trying to wake people up to the world and the consequences for not being informed. Why do people want to constantly detract from the message? Edwards too is given hell for being wealthy (expensive haircuts etc) and yet they are like every other US politician (rich) and someone needs to make you all aware that no one can even contemplate high political office without money. At least they are attempting to bring the poorest parts of American citizens back into the fold of what America has attempted to do in the past: be fair, be kind, be just. I think a lot of Americans are selfish and indifferent to those who are less well off (must be their fault)! Oh, yes, all those college kids who get into the Ivy League colleges because of wealth and not brains (hmm, who could I be thinking of?) Time to make college education again affordable for most who wish to have it and need it. The idea that we should not care about this important part of our country is disgusting - other Western countries try hard to do this and succeed in many areas. Only the US has a dog eat dog mentality!
September 17th, 2007 at 11:08 amal gore won’t run 4 prez. and would u blame him, who in there right mind would want 2 spend there admin. cleaning up the mess the republicans have made.he’ll never get a chance 2 implement his own policies.
September 17th, 2007 at 12:22 pmWhat did Al Gore mean at the end, by “Current.com… Next month”?
September 17th, 2007 at 2:23 pmIs a major event planned on Current.com in October?
If the premise behind Current TV: “television network that allows viewers to “create and influence what airs on TV.— were true, the political section would look a lot like Digg’s World and Business section. And that would mean a lot of positive Ron Paul coverage, a lot of real Global Warming debate with the so-called deniers in a prominent position, and a lot of expose of government’s hypocrisy and fraud.
Anything short of that is just a mirror image of the “fair and balanced” network’s coverage. And by mirror I mean- just like it, except with a 180 degrees slant in the opposite political direction.
September 17th, 2007 at 2:24 pm“What did Al Gore mean at the end, by “Current.com… Next monthâ€?

The site for the network right now is current.tv. If you go to current.com you’ll find that there is a new website being launched in October.
September 17th, 2007 at 3:10 pmI am a 61 year old wife, mom and grandmother. Although our city (in central Arkansas) provides us with a large dumpster for ALL of our recyclables. We don’t have to sort or separate. The sanitation company does that for us. How easy is that?? But only 30% of our city’s households recycle!
We need Al Gore!
Run, Al, run… please!
September 17th, 2007 at 3:41 pmI hope Gore sticks to advocacy and lobbying. That is what he does best. We have a fair to good group of candidates anyway. Besides both Gore and Kerry were weak candidates, and they didn’t have the stamina to take on the known hustlers and criminals.
September 17th, 2007 at 9:06 pmAs a licensed clinician, I was starting to back the Clinton campaign until her stinker of a health care plan was unveiled today. She has sold out to the insurance industry. Believe me, the only solution is a universal plan, modeled after Medicare, that puts the filthy, greedy insurance companies - and the immoral people who work for them - out of business. Al Gore supports the universal plan. Run Al run!

al gore for president
September 18th, 2007 at 9:34 amAfter watching both sides of the Presidential candidates, the one individual who will be able to clean up the mess that George W. Bush will leave would be Al Gore. As far as a VP for Gore I think it should be Obama, but then again that would be Gore’s choice and Obama is articulate and backing to bring home the Presidency. Thanks.
