Fox censors Sally Field’s anti-war speech at Emmy’s.
At tonight’s Emmy Awards show, the audience cheered Sally Field’s acceptance speech, which recognized the mothers of U.S. troops. “Surely this [award] belongs to all the mothers of the world,” she stated. “May they be seen, may their work be valued and raised. Especially to the mothers who stand with an open heart and wait. Wait for their children to come home from danger, from harm’s way, and from war. I am proud to be one of those women.”
Field then continued, “If mothers ruled the world, there would be no –” But the Fox Emmycast cut off her sound and pointed the camera away from the stage, silencing the rest of her sentence: “god-damned wars in the first place.” Watch it:

At the beginning of Fox's broadcast, we all thought the shot of the disco ball during Ray Romano was a sloppy director's call. Now, I'm not so sure. I'm thinking Fox, being Fox, established this shot as a "go to" in case of political views not valued by this network. Crafty, aren't they? It's better, in the eyes of the public, to look incompetent than evil. Sounds kinda like a president we know.

Bono dropped the F bomb a few years ago and the FCC ruled that it wasn't actionable. I see the commits are against what see had to say yet these aren't those in harms way or would they join the Military to go to Iraq. I find it interesting how those who support the invasion wouldn't go themselves. On a former posting I read commits that said if the White House were to open the draft the bloggers said they would go to Canada. So it makes since for those to support Bush just don't say they have to go to Iraq. Freedom of Speech is still legal. As for the chose of words I suggest you visit Walter Reed Hospital or the grave sites of our dead soldiers and see what words come to mind. My daughters partner died and his body was all over the place so you can think this is a video invasion if you want but the body was that of a young man who died based on lies told to him by the Bush Administration.

Not only did they cut her audio completely but they also broke to a view of something that was obstructing the stage that made it look like a technical difficulty. If they just wanted to bleep it they would have not switched the video away from her. Perhaps an innocent mistake but I am skeptical given the Fox record.
Whether you agree with the war or not it is a shame that we live in a society where this kind of censorhip happens. I do agree that she did swear, but I think this just happened to be a situation where the 7 Dirty Words happened to intersect with a network political agenda.
September 17th, 2007 at 12:01 amShe really got lost there--totally forgetting her point. The show really sucked--boring and there was no point to being in the round if they were always facing just one way for the cameras--half the audience only saw butts.
The cutting away was totally wrong, and they didn't do it for other people who ran long--they just used the music for that, and there was some countdown clock people mentioned. Ryan Seacrest is so nothing--not funny, not hot, not talented, not anything. Robert Duvall ran long each time he was up there and they didn't even play the music i don't think, and he was totally rambling.

I have always believed that censoring curse words and nudity is actually worse when it comes to our children since that makes it more taboo therefore making them more curious about it all. In other countries a bare breast on TV is normal but if Janet Jackson has a breast pop out all hell breaks lose.
I am 36 and I remember my dad taking me to watch Cheech and Chong movies when I was only 6 or 7. Guess what. I grew up drug free. I knew it was a movie. My parents taught me that what I saw on the big screen was just a movie and they also taught me right and wrong. I grew up watching the movies my parents watch even if they had nudity. I grew up normal and never touch drugs.
FOX needs to lighten up. Hell, all TV stations need to take a stand and control of their programing and not let the FCC or anyone else tell them what to do. It is the parent's responsibility to monitor what their children watch, not the networks.

Every human being can understand that war is not a good thing, and more importantly killing is not a good thing. There really is no situation where killing any human is justifiable. Wars have been fought every century since the writing of history, but this does not mean we have to be pessimistic and say that there is nothing we can do to stop them from occuring in the future. I pose a question, what if every mother and father taught thier children unconditional, omnipotent love from day one, and enforced this mindset by example? What might the world look like without barriers, and what could happen if those who don't understand this concept now or refuse to believe they are loved simply because they are didn't criticize this ideal but embraced it?
To those of you who will respond to this comment by saying that such a thing could and never will happen I want you to know, though I have never seen your face, and don't know your name, that I love you just because you are. I know it is hard to understand what that implies, but just know that someone else out there loves you. I say that because I know that all of us who are and have been are truely luminous beings.
I feel that the many of our problems are rooted in an inability to confront them, and own them, instead of them owning us.
Im do not want to sound "preachy." I am just tired of conflict in general. I am tired of being selfish, and trying to justify how I am not. I am fed up with this feeling of always wanting and wanting when I know full well that I have what I need. I am sick of worrying myself sick about tomorrow when today has enough problems on its own. Gore never said he invented the internet. This is what conservatives like to think he said. He said he co-authored the legislation. It's true. Not debateable at all. Gore's math about 42% of Bush's tax cuts going to the top 1% was exactly right,too---not fuzzy at all.
It's also true that exit polls said Gore won Florida (including Boca) by 15% or 300,000 votes. It's also true that the Florida Supreme Court has juridiction over its elections and not the US Supreme Court.

See how that looks? And they KNOW IT. Let Bush and his silver spoon go fight Saddam, Reagan fight Gorbachev, Nixon/Kissenger, Johnson, Kennedy, and Ike fight Ho Chi Minh, and so on.
We do not like killing other people who are more than likely in the same spot we are in (lower working class).
Our constitution gives us the right of free speach and with that right their comes a responsibility "USE IT OR LOSE IT" the conservative movement wants total control of everday life. Who marries who doesn't, who starts a family who doesn't, who gets representation and who doesn't, who gets equal opportunity (white male) and who doesn't (everyone else), who makes the law/enforces and who gets the law enforced upon them.

What an excellent speech. It's about time someone said something like that on national T.V. But alas, once again, The government oversteps the bounds of the media, telling them what they can and can't air. If we can watch an a-hole kill 30+ students at V.T. (Virginia Tech), over and over, weeks at a time, on every major and minor news station, how come we can't watch a star, share her opinion about the terrible war we're in? Some freedom of speech. -They also cut Ray Romano for about as long as they cut Sally. According to what I read, his comment was not at all political, and contained only one naughty word. They made enough of a cut of him that I had no idea what he said, until I read about it later. But, the meaning of what Sally said was clear to me, even though they cut some of it (I knew where she was going with it, based on the context.
-Several of you mention that they could have cut only the bad word(s) she said. Do you know technically how they go about doing any of this? I don't. But I'm pretty sure that the precision possible when dealing with a recording is not possible during a live broadcast. They're probably more interested in covering their a** than anything else.

Second, these things are taken on a case-by-case basis. There are cases where the use of "f***", "m*th*rf*****", and "f*** 'em" have been found not indecent. By the way, the reference to "God damn it" is in footnote 37 of the FCC document -- there is no sub-section 37.
It saddens me to see the lack of facts and reasoning displayed by so many people. It really does.
