Last night, Sally Field began an anti-war acceptance speech at the Emmy Awards, stating, “If mothers ruled the world, there would be no –” But Fox then cut off her sound and pointed the camera away from the stage, silencing the rest of her sentence: “god-damned wars in the first place.” Tom O’Neil of the LA Times writes that technically, there was nothing profane about her comments:
Technically, Field’s censored words are not profane. A 2004 FCC ruling specifically stated no objection to the use of “god damn” on TV when making a judgment on the uproar over Bono swearing at the Golden Globes in 2003 where he used more colorful language.
See the FCC ruling HERE.
UPDATE: The Washington Post’s Tom Shales notes, “If Fox censored Field for political reason, it would be an ugly first in the history of the Emmys.”
Even if it was a word on the banned list, they should have bleeped out the god damned part and left the rest of the sentence in tact.
September 17th, 2007 at 9:44 amIf this were on Fox News, O’Reilly would have told Ms. Field to “shut up!” and then would hang up on her. Another political debate “won” by Fox News.

Good point – thank you Fox!
September 17th, 2007 at 9:48 amTechnically we should leave such pap on tv because America just cant destroy whats left of its dignity and morality fast enough; children of America take note, just in case you were watching the show last night.
Next up: Brittany appears half-naked on prime time and proceeds to french kiss Madonna.
September 17th, 2007 at 9:48 amFox News: Unfair and Unbalanced and Anti-Democratic. This censorship shows one thing – Fox News is the “official propaganda megaphone” of the Bush Administration. Let’s all begin a ‘CENSOR FOX’ CAMPAIGN.
It’s time to express our outrage against Fox News by banning the viewing of their programming from our homes.
Propaganda and lies = Fox News.
September 17th, 2007 at 9:49 amWe all disgusting swiftboating of our veterans and decorated war heroes but we have to censor a mild expletive?? We permit disgusting displays of nudity in our programming and we find it important to censor a mild expletive? WTF is going on in this country of debouchery??
September 17th, 2007 at 9:51 amSally Fields’ censored comment will be heard worldwide and will make a total mockery of Fox. Be careful what you ask for! Now this will become a hallmark of our culture, thanks to Fox Network.
September 17th, 2007 at 9:52 amTHE BIBLE SHOULD BE BANNED! rape. murder, incest…. mmmm the makings of a great hbo special….
September 17th, 2007 at 9:53 amWhat’s amazing to me is that even without the (mild) profanity, her comments weren’t so much Anti-Bush (as some have reported), but more Anti-War. Yet, it’s because her message was Anti-War that people are automatically equating the message as being Anti-Bush.
What a legacy for our President.

Sally didn’t have much choice since the Emmys were hosted by Faux Noise this year. Shame on the Emmys for allowing this Unfair and Unbalanced organization to profit from the Emmys.
September 17th, 2007 at 9:54 amBOYCOTT ALL FOX PROGRAMMING IMMEDIATELY! They need to be held accountable for their lying to the american people and presenting only biased news. What ever happened to our “truth in reporting” laws?? Fox News needs to be investigated for the lies they spun surrounding this war – once Bush et al go before an international war crimes tribunal, I’ve heard that they will also be bringing in news people to provide testimony about how they “aided and abetted” this travesty called the Iraq War.
September 17th, 2007 at 9:54 amIt goes without saying that “appearing on Fox network” is the kiss of death for ANY candidate – Repuke or Dem.
BOYCOTT FOX PROGRAMMING TODAY.
September 17th, 2007 at 9:55 amAs I said on this subject earlier, the issue here was not the “obscenityâ€. The issue was that Sally almost spoke truth to the American people, which might have actually woken some of them up.
Obviously, that had to be stopped at all costs.
September 17th, 2007 at 9:55 amModerator…Moderator….Mr. Pee on Isle 3.
September 17th, 2007 at 9:57 amBilbo: Just look at the larger picture here though. By their censoring of what has to be the view of the majority of americans at this point, Fox network has shown that they live in the same bubble as Bubble Boy. They’ve shown that they could care less about the will of the people when, in fact, if the people were to boycott their programming, they’d go down the tubes. They can pander and propagate Bush’s lies till the cows come home but NOW the people have seen who they are….the true wolf in sheep’s clothing. Once witnessed, there’s no going back.
Fox has totally lost it’s credibility in this democracy. The people will now choose to boycott their programming and effectively put this network out of business in this country.
September 17th, 2007 at 9:57 amINVEST IN THE FOX BLOCKER! google it.
September 17th, 2007 at 9:58 amTMM: Yes, what a refreshing change of pace for someone to attempt to speak the truth, isn’t it? Unfortunately, the reverse has become SOP in this country. What a sad state of affairs when lies become the status quo and truth is shoved to the sidelines. Sadly, this government has become one grade B fiction novel.
September 17th, 2007 at 9:59 amI sure am glad our soldiers are fighting for all of our freedoms in Iraq just so Fox can censor those same freedoms right here in America.
September 17th, 2007 at 9:59 amVive La Sally Fields! You go Girl!!
September 17th, 2007 at 10:00 amdim wit: Isn’t that just the height of hypocrisy?? We’re sponsoring freedom in Iraq while squelching freedom in this country. Sick!
September 17th, 2007 at 10:00 amsorry, TP, I don’t know what came over me…
September 17th, 2007 at 10:01 amThey just screen The Emmys in Australia and Sally Field’s acceptance speech was shown in full, with no bleeping. Also, the camera didn’t cut away at any time to the the crowd. Is there a different director for the international version of The Emmys? Does seem strange that a cutaway is inserted in the US that is not in the version released to Australia, and presumably the rest of the world.
Sounded like Sally Field got a cheer when she finished speaking.
The perfect Awards show. A bit over 90 minutes, 29 awards given out, comedy spots, a few musical numbers, over before the boredom sets in.
September 17th, 2007 at 10:01 amDon’t let the door hit you on your sorry ass DeanCT! Leaving so soon?? Aw shucks…no fascist talking points to spew here today? Guess you didn’t get your lockstep directions for the day yet. Aw shucks!
September 17th, 2007 at 10:01 am16. Taking the LORD’s Name in vain is not a “mild expletiveâ€.
whomever “Mr. President” is, there actually ARE people in this country who don’t believe in your LORD. This ISN”T a Christian country, and Sally Field was clearly vindicated by the FCC, it wasn’t profane, you just think it is because you believe in a make believe God who sits up in the sky and judges all of humanity. Get a grip on reality. Sounds like you’d be a great potential attendee of the “Creationism Museum”…..humans walking around with Dinosaurs. Makes sense to me!
September 17th, 2007 at 10:01 amThanks Fan of Man! Tell everyone you know to get the FOX BLOCKER today and show Fox that we don’t need their brand of communism in this country.
September 17th, 2007 at 10:02 amIn the past week FOX TV was the only broadcast network NOT to air the Democratic response (from veteran Army Ranger Senator Jack Reed of Rhode Island) to the President’s address and they censored an anti-war statement during the Emmy Awards. FoxNews was the only news network given an exclusive one-hour interview with Gen. Petreaus and Ambassador Crocker in primetime during their two days of Congressional testimony. Fair and Balanced? I report, you decide.
September 17th, 2007 at 10:03 amOhtheBill: Again, you show your disdain for democracy. Your version of “God” is definitely not everyone’s version so hang it up, please and get with the times.
September 17th, 2007 at 10:03 amThe censorship was not about “goddamn.” It was about the fear that she was going to say something negative about our fearless leader and his stupid folly in the Middle East. That’s the right for you, trigger happy as always.

September 17th, 2007 at 10:06 amGays, Guns, and God! There’s no fool like a Republican bible-thumping fool! Gotcha!!
She was censored by Fox, not the FCC, so it doesn’t matter if the FCC has ruled the terms as ‘profanity’ or not. That is, unless that was Fox’s excuse for censoring it. Otherwise TP seems to be confusing gov’t censorship with private censorship.
September 17th, 2007 at 10:06 amGays, Guns & God can rally the reighwing, hypocritical christofascists like nothing else.
September 17th, 2007 at 10:06 amStill, it was a pretty stupid comment and shows my she should keep to acting and avoid politics.

September 17th, 2007 at 10:11 amThere is no “hurting the cause” cuz right now there ain’t no cause other than hey, Mr. Prez, how about kindly giving our brave men and women a little more time between deployments, say the same as when they were last there? Could you do that, please, pretty please, with sugar on top? We’ll let you do whatever you want in the civil liberties realm if only you’d just do this for us? What cause . . . least she said something.
September 17th, 2007 at 10:11 amJust Shocking that FOX would stifle any social commentary…
September 17th, 2007 at 10:12 amHow unexpected…
Fox did Sally Field a huge favor. No one is interested in what these ultra-left, Hollywood hyprocrites think anyway.
AND for any TP poster calling for the boycott of Fox, Hitler would be proud. You little brownshirts would murder conservatives if you weren’s such cowards.
September 17th, 2007 at 10:13 amSketter: It’s obvious that you are of the male species because you have “no clue” about maternalism whatsoever. If you were a woman, you wouldn’t find it possible to be so two faced in your ideology. How can anyone raise a child and then place them in such an obvious “harm’s way”? It’s not possible emotionally. You should stick to areas you have direct experience with or say nothing at all lest you lose immediate credibility.
If Congress mandated that anyone who votes to place this country and the children of others into a compromising situation like a war of choice by immediately surrendering one of their own “for the cause”, you’d see how quickly they’d vote “yes” to engage this country in war.
This is precisely the point Fields was making. Obviously, you didn’t get it.
September 17th, 2007 at 10:13 am#47 The truth hurts, doesn’t it? And your analogy is bogus – what this boycott calls for IS the epitome of “free speech” and free choice in this country. This is not censorship. A good US Government 101 course may help educate you.
September 17th, 2007 at 10:15 amFox News = Be careful what you ask for! You’ve outed yourself handily on this one. Bush’s propaganda mouthpiece will receive more negative air time than anything else today.
Fields’ career will take off like a jet and the run on “Fox Blockers” will reach unprecedented numbers.
I think this is rather comical myself that Fox would stoop to such lengths to move itself toward extinction.
I guess that’s what they mean by “eating their own”. hahahaha!

So it’s the responsibility of the brass to censor political free speech to and from the people who are fighting to preserve it? Don’t you think the soldiers fighting in Iraq are competent enough to read opposing views on the war and make up their own minds about it, or do you think they’re not smart enough to handle it?
Why do you hate the troops, Mighty Cross? Why must you infantilize them so?
September 17th, 2007 at 10:45 amI’ve stopped watching the Fox network long ago. What was the point in watching one of their new scripted series, when it was inevitable that the show would be canceled two weeks later? In Fox’s tiny little mins, actors, writers, sets all cost too much money. Better to throw up some unscripted drivel and rake in the dough.

You may have hit upon something. Sally could have stayed home from the Emmys to keep from “going on Fox”. Imagine if everyone connected with the Emmys (actors, producers, directors, writers, presenters, etc.) who didn’t want to “go on Fox” stayed home. The Emmys wouldn’t really be much of a show, but Fox would still have their diehard wingnuts watching, so they wouldn’t care. The Emmy people could either live with that or go with a different network next time.

I’d like to point out that the military blocked virtually ALL political blog sites — not just ThinkProgress. Right-wing sites have been blocked, too. They aren’t just going after “leftist trash”.
But your implication that TP is a site with a great deal of troop-trashing is somewhat interesting. I have been reading and posting here for awhile now and I see extremely little slamming of the troops (usually isolated posts from the occasional nutcase here and there), and a great deal of support for them.

Funny you should ask. I was considering a response to miss molly to point out that there are a few regular posters here who use the few soldiers who have acted in inappropriate or inhumane ways to slam our troops. Unfortunately, I don’t remember off hand who they are and, of course, the ever present “LINK!” request would have followed the post. I don’t have the time now to search through old posts to find the names. Perhaps they will be forthright and volunteer their names? (Don’t hold your breath, though) The posters that I am talking about generally appear to be reasonable people, they just occasionally lose control of their ultra-left sensibilities. ;)

September 17th, 2007 at 12:02 pmReally? I would definitely like to know a regular here who degrades the troops inappropriately or inhumanely.
I’m new here, and as of yet, have only seen “the left” want our troops to come home, which, to me, is not inappropriate, nor non supportive of the troops.
But, if some have degraded the troops, I would not be so kind to them.
Care to provide the regulars names???
Care to provide the regulars names???

If you read my comment again, I believe you will find the answer to your question. Assuming that they will choose not to make themselves known, it won’t be long before they slip up again and make it obvious. In the meantime, have you noticed the poster who apparently agrees with Ward Churchill that the U.S. deserved what happened on 9/11? Maybe it’s comments like that from which our troops are being shielded. And, yes, I can name that one, but he’s so proud of it, I’m sure he’ll respond himself. I agree that our troops need to come home, but I don’t think we need to slam the military, or the U.S., in the meantime. ;)
September 17th, 2007 at 12:14 pmSo basically, without offering up proof, you expect me to take your false accusations as truth?
I’m sorry, but that will not fly with me.
It appears to be an attempt by a select few to derail the thread off topic. Is that because they don’t have the backbone to defend their stance, or is it just childish game of “hey, look at me” for the attention starved?
Anyway, I can hope that you are neither.
September 17th, 2007 at 12:24 pmDo you feel that the censor was “profane”.
Because, let me tell you, I’ve seen commercials on Fox (as well as the other networks) that have made me more uncomfortable than a speech uttering “Goddam”. The KFC one that portrays a misunderstanding from a knife wielding employee comes to mind. I’m sure the victims of job related violence do not find that one particularly amusing.
Wasn’t Sally Field a hawk early on? Wasn’t she supporting Bush and the republicans for a while there?
Anyway glad to hear she said something that Fox felt worthy of censoring.
It just goes to show that there is really no one left in the country who supports the war.
September 17th, 2007 at 12:26 pmYeah, Faux news is pretty stupid. I don’t watch MSM on tv anymore, cuz they all suck the big one. But this is something I wouldn’t have known about if Faux didn’t censor it.
September 17th, 2007 at 12:34 pmIf Sally Field had said that would love to eat Bush’s shit and drink his pee, she wouldn’t have been censored. Fox News in fact would have arranged a special televised command performance with the Bush White House to enable her to do just that.

Thank God for the Canadians. They’re just like Americans…only sane.
September 17th, 2007 at 1:30 pmWonder how long it will take for the ACLU to get involved in FOX’s censorship of Free Speech at the Emmy’s?
September 17th, 2007 at 2:16 pmJenna,
Skip some government classes in high school? Really, that was a pretty stupid post.
The ACLU will NOT get involved, because they only care about CENSORSHIP.
This is not CENSORSHIP. This is one network making a decision, which that network if perfectly free to do.
September 17th, 2007 at 2:46 pmWhat do you expect from FUX. It is the evil empire controlled by a ultra conservative non American.
September 17th, 2007 at 3:37 pmSally is a washed up old hag. “YOU like me, you really like me!!” No, we forgot who you were until last night. And tomorrow we will forget you again.
The ACLU? Are you retarded? The FCC can only get involved. If you censor Whoopi, then maybe!
September 17th, 2007 at 3:47 pmWow!
It’s okay to swear in the name of God, but not call a homosexual a Fag, Queer or Gay Boy. For the vast amount of the 2 billion ignorant you should know about the 4 billion people who believe in God. Not even a 10th of 1% of the six billion (plus or minus 25,000 or so, still undecided demoncrates) are homosexual but they are protected by the “Rosie” police.
Cursing God is immoral, unethical and should be comsindered highly rude, just like making fun of faggots, queers, lesbo’s and the likes of “them”.
Grow up liberals and beware of straight people who stand for a decent America. Oh the venom you spew and yet you cant handle a little button bite.
Sally Fonda Filed I hope your show is cancelled.

I don’t disagree. Where are you at with the ethics/morality of the exploitation of workers, the trashing of the planet, and the gross disparity of income between corporate leaders versus the average worker
September 17th, 2007 at 5:38 pmThat god-damned Fox is a god-damned blight on our freedom-loving democracy, and should take their god-damned censorship to some god-damned country like Communist Red China where god-damned right-wing conservative censorship is practiced all the god-damned time.
What? You thought that China was run by a bunch of atheistic Communist left-wingers?
Then why the hell do these “left-wing” Communist Chinese leaders ALWAYS censor the same god-damned things that the god-damned right-wingers in the United States censor or call to be censored???
Please try to explain this to me. Because it is quite obvious that people calling for the same god-damned censorship must share the same god-damned mindset. I’m not fooled. It is said, “by their fruit you will recognize them,” and it is obvious that god-damned censorship is the “fruit” of a certain god-damned mindset…which is totally opposite “live and let live” liberal.
September 17th, 2007 at 11:07 pmWait…. Listen…. What is that sound???? Oh, yeah…. it’s APPLAUSE! So obviously, at least three people in the audience approved of the “no gosh-darned war” comment? No?
Golly. I think I’ll vote repugnican in the next election because I have mush for brains. Oh, look! A puppy! Isn’t that cute? I love puppies, and all puppies would vote repugnican! Jesus loves puppies! Therefore Jesus must be a repugnican! I’m so happy god loves puppies and repugnicans!
September 17th, 2007 at 11:17 pmUgh,
My left leg’s gone . . . I’m looking down, myright leg’s gone. I can’t feel a thing. I think I’m dying.”
Please tell my wife, my sons an daughters that I love them.
I’m gone.
Dub’yas girls are at a coctail party.
September 17th, 2007 at 11:39 pmAt what point do people stand up and scream?
The time has passed.
In retrospect, it is today.
Scream! Let your voice be heard. Call your congressperson and say no more. Vote. Don’t just vote for failed dems who have promised largely and failed to deliver, vote, and do so decisively. END THIS NOW! TAKE BACK AMERICA.
This is not a radical ideal invented today, our forefathers invented it when they wrote the Constitution. EMBRACE IT!
September 17th, 2007 at 11:56 pmSorry, don’t mean to be a Blogg Hog,
But here is a small list of the folks that need to SCREAM:
You are gay and want to be accepted
You are gay and want to be married
You live animals and want them not to be killwd
You are human and believe that for all of mankind to own assault rifles is a bad idea
You are a stag, with big antlers, thinking that the Ted Nugent ? would’ya, could’ya)
Dubya, just thinking, if you weren’t the biggest “major league asshohle” , could you just leave SMU alone? Maybe when Laura killes her next ex, it could be you?
September 18th, 2007 at 12:14 amThe fcc needs to tell fox it can no longer use the word “news.”
September 18th, 2007 at 3:48 amIt’s not even infotainment, FFS: it’s irritainment.
