In what was billed as a major televised address on Iraq, President Bush last week “recycled tired rhetoric” and “mumbo jumbo” about staying the course. Sen. Jack Reed delivered a direct response, pledging the Democratic leadership would “exercise our Constitutional duties and profoundly change our military involvement in Iraq.”
In case any more evidence was needed that the American public has tuned Bush out and is anxious to hear ideas for a responsible exit strategy from Iraq, we received it today. On both Fox and CNN, more viewers watched the Democratic response than they did the Bush speech. And on MSNBC, only a narrow sliver separate the viewership of the two speeches. Courtesy of TVNewser:
Network Time Program Viewers FOX 9:00 Bush 745,000 FOX 9:19 Dem. Response 813,000
MSNBC 9:01 Bush 455,000 MSNBC 9:20 Dem. Response 446,000 CNN 9:00 Bush 454,000 CNN 9:20 Dem. Response 507,000
In January, in the lead-up to Bush’s speech announcing the escalation, Tony Snow claimed, “My sense is that the American people want to hear what the President has to say.” Bush decided not to listen to the public, so the public has increasingly decided not to listen to Bush.

See? The majority of the country has thrown up the koolaid and knows Bush is a liar.
They’re clearly tired of his lies.

Is you behind children left learning?
September 17th, 2007 at 8:57 pmCheney and Bush don’t give a hoot about the integrity of the Iraqi nation, and never have.
September 17th, 2007 at 8:58 pmIt’s the oil fields and the pipelines and the ports that they care about.
Following President Bush’s address to the nation on Iraq, Fox was the only broadcast network not to air the Democratic response. Instead, Shepard Smith gave a short description of the response and stated: “Our coverage continues on the Fox News Channel on cable and satellite with the Democratic response and more. Right now, back to your local Fox programming.” ABC, NBC, and CBS all aired the Democratic response.
So apparently Fox chose to air the president’s speech, but chose NOT to play the Democratic response because that was taken over by their “news” division.
September 17th, 2007 at 9:00 pmWhy did they play the speech in the first place if they weren’t going to play the response? They are each newsworthy. But that’s Fox for you — catapaulting the Bush propagnda outfit if nothing else.

September 17th, 2007 at 9:00 pmTrolls,
Fox networks did not air the response, but the Fox cable newstation did. Yes TP made that confusing the other day, they could have pointed out that FOX was the only Network with a news division, who did not air the Democratic response on thier network division. NBC has a news division too, but it still aired the Dem response on it’s network division. Fox was limiting who saw the Dem response.
September 17th, 2007 at 9:02 pmThe Levin-Reed amendment (also endorsed by Feinstein and Salazar) is the same old nonbinding crap we’ve seen for over a year now. I’d rather listen to Reed than Bush (I can hardly stand to even look at Bush, anymore; he makes my blood boil), but what Reed offers isn’t much of anything, in my opinion.
September 17th, 2007 at 9:04 pmFox was being manipulative and slippery when they decided to refer viewers to thier cable news division for the Dem response. They know damn well a percentage of people won’t go through the trouble to change the channel. Networks spend lots of money studying viewer behaviors, they know this stuff. The other networks have a “cable news division” too, but they didn’t pull that sh!t.

I had to suffer through the Dem response, then finally see the analysis.
Of course, you neglect to state how many viewers stayed on through Fox’s analysis of the Prez’s speech and the Dem response.

Hannity: I think we learned something and you touched on this in the book as it relates to as for example when people get angry, like on the immigration bill. The fix was in. Everybody agreed to it. They didn’t expect a push back. Talk radio got involved, FOX NEWS, the new media all of a sudden people got informed. They started dialing—instilled fear in their politicians and it changed.

Through 2006, Republicans controlled Congress for 12 years, and a Repub has had the White House for 6 1/2 years. That’s 18 1/2 years of Republican influence in government. The Dems have had the majority in Congress for all of 9 months, and have pretty much given Bush what he wants in terms of the “war.” Explain why America hasn’t been on the right track over this period of time (now approaching 19 years) and in the context of Republican control, what difference abolishing the Dem party will make.

No good cartoons on other channels while Reed talks?
September 18th, 2007 at 9:32 amI wouldn’t get too excited about this.
It’s all about timing. If they are using Nielsen ratings, the info is based on who is watching at the beginning and the end of the program. They want to know how many people are sticking around and watching the whole program, and how many are finding it boring and turned it off.
Folks tuned around, caught Bush’s speech after it started, and then stuck around and watched the Democrat response.
Personally, I didn’t see either one.

President Bush’s Message, “Not On My Watchâ€
That should be the media’s headlines over the weekend after hearing the President make his 8th primetime television speech about Iraq to the American people.
While I’m not a supporter of John Edwards, he said it best tonight during his paid for commercial that was aired not long after the President spoke.
“In January, after years of evidence that military actions cannot force a political solution, the president announced a military surge to force a political solution. In May, he vetoed a plan to end the war, demanded more time to show the surge could work, and Congress gave it to him. Now, after General Petraeus reports the surge has produced no progress toward a political solution, what does the president want? More time for the surge to work, when all of us know it won’t.”
The President informed the nation tonight that he expects to leave a U.S. presence in Iraq way beyond his presidency. He said Iraqi leaders “have asked for an enduring relationship with America.†The mission keeps changing, have you noticed?
What happened to, “Missions Accomplished†Mr. President?
