Rove investigation in jeopardy due to funding.

Rove investigation in jeopardy due to funding.»

In April, the Office of Special Counsel launched a six-member task force examining “the firing of at least one U.S. attorney, missing White House e-mails, and White House efforts to keep presidential appointees attuned to Republican political priorities.” The task force is in now jeopardy. “Without a last-minute infusion of nearly $3 million, the special task force may be unable to pay its staff and buy the kind of technical equipment it needs” for the investigation, according to Jim Mitchell, the office’s spokesman. But the funds may be hard to come by:

The cost of the task force for 2008 would be $2.89 million, according to OSC estimates. But Bloch started the probe long after he submitted his 2008 budget request. And now he’s having a hard time convincing those holding the nation’s purse strings to loosen up and give him some last-minute extra funding.

    Shouldn’t this be a no-brainer for Congress?
I know the Dems have often exhibited a knack for screwing the pooch, but this shouldn’t be such a difficult decision, especially given the amount needed. The government buys toothpicks that cost more than $2.89 million.

  4. curmudgeon Says:

$70 million dollars during the Clinton era to find a stained blue dress? No problem.

$2.89 million dollars to investigate serious constitutional violations? We are told that there isn’t enough money?

How long ago was it, exactly, that this country fell down the rabbit hole?

Over 40 million was spent on the WhiteWater witchhunt finally ending up with a stain on a blue dress and we cannot fund an investigation into a willfull violation of the Presidential Records Act?

Why is anybody surprised by this?

With every passing day comes another outrage, and we are still shocked. Folks, it’s time to face facts. The government was taken over, the shock troops were called in, and they immediately replaced competent bureaucrats with corporate lackeys, partisan hacks, religious zealots and the politically-connected.

The government is, for all intents and purposes, dead. It’s just us now.

If the DOJ hadn’t spent all of that money on $4.00 meatballs and cookies, there’s be plenty to continue the job of “governing”. The fact is that Bush tanked this economy, part and parcel, with this amoral, highly illegal war.

Or when China calls due l/3 of our national debt - whichever comes first. It’s all doom and gloom and I don’t think six presidents can undo the devastating harm which BushCo has done to this country.

And, if he’s not stopped by impeachment now, he can wreak much more devastation on us and the rest of the world in the 500 days he’s got left.

This country simply doesn’t HAVE 500 days with Bush screwing it up.

  15. Spiffy Says:

If congressional Democrats are reluctant to back Bloch, it may be because of concerns about his appropriateness. Bloch, whose office investigates whistle-blower retaliation complaints and discrimination disputes as well as allegations of inappropriate political activity by government employees, has twice been accused by watchdog groups and former employees of letting politics determine investigative decisions.

Bloch is also reportedly under investigation by a White House-run panel, the President’s Council on Integrity and Efficiency (PCIE), over allegations he retaliated and discriminated against his own employees. Bloch has denied the charges.

    I rest my case.

  17. razzle Says:

International powers are already saying that BushCo has damaged the entire world with his foreign policy. Not to mention that every country in the world thinks we’re a bunch of flaming morons and war-mongering sadists who are selfishly helping themselves to the oil in Iraq. They knew all along, as did many of us, that this war was all about the oil….just follow the dots….Cheney had his Oil Gang meeting covertly in the white house even before 9/11. Connect the dots, folks…..now you have Greenspan spilling the beans on Cheney and his Energy Committee - whoopee! This is going to get real dicey now that the cat is out of the bag.

  18. bilbobaggins Says:

My bet is on the Democrats approving the funding and the Republics filibustering the bill. Bush will certainly veto any funding bill that contains funding to investigate crimes he and his minions have committed. The Democrats should be all over this and raising a really big stink.

  20. Dave C Says:

btw the U.S. is spending on average $1.4 billion a day during the last year. At that rate they would spend $3 million in 3 minutes. So they’re going to end this investigation over 3 minutes worth of cost.

    Comment by Roger_Roger

Well, you were fine with spending 70 million dollars to investigate anything and everything that Clinton ever did. So why are you against spending 3 million dollars to see if the Bush Administration politicized the Justice Department and punished US Attorneys who refused to go along with Bush’s program to only go after Democrats. I’m quite sure if the tables were turned, you would be more than happy to allocate the money.

You Republics are such hypocrites. It’s amazing that you don’t see it.

It’s such a reprieve from the avalanche of shit hitting the fan every day - to know that you have absolutely nothing to do with it.

The “I’s” are gaining steam every week that this spineless, sycophantic Congress drags it’s feet in pursuing the mandate of the people. The number of Registered I’s is now 35% - with the Dems at about 37% which means that the “minority party” or “third party” is now the GOP at 28% and dropping like the Titanic.

You do not have to feel that you are aiding and abetting the reign of King George by being attached to the spineless Dems who, clearly, are abrogating their duty. Register Independent Today!

Our DOJ has become a den of iniquity instead of being the hallmark of justice. And, if these Dems do not push for this investigation to continue, then it’s clear that the majority of americans have moved “left” of all of them - leaving them in the dust. How would you have known that Clinton BROKE THE LAW if you had not had Ken Starr to investigate him. We don’t even have a Ken Starr in our corner to investigate Bush because he will not allow appointing a special prosecutor. Why do you think that is?

Your critical thinking skills are non-existent. The Democrats know what the Bush Administration has done, they need to investigate to prove it. And Bush has been stopping the investigation every step of the way. What is Bush afraid of?

I’m sure that was your opinion when Clinton was being investigated. Use some critical thinking. If you suspect someone in the govt has committed a crime you investigate. It’s got to be like shooting fish in a barrel deciding which crime of the GWB administration to go after.

  63. hellinabucket Says:

gitmo can be used to sharpen the argument. Others have more information and can express it with a different take that can only enhance the fact based seekers of justice.

Don’t drop to a name calling contest but question gitmo. If he just insults then all are shown he has no real point and he loses. If he attempts to counter with a thought out point then it’s up to us to research and respond. We win when that happens.

You don’t have to repond with anger. Respond with reason, evidence and determination. More of that is needed to grow the american spine against the fear mongers.

So I say to you gitmo, “Bring it on” but be prepared to be an adult and use logic. There are others here that will chew you up and spit you out.

Yes, the Republicans want to start a “partisan witch hunt” to find out if Clinton politicized the government the way Bush has done. The Democrats said “go for it”. Now, can you imagine if Clinton had politicized the government, how that would have remained unknown to the public considering the fact that Ken Starr investigated everything including Clinton’s bathroom breaks.

Second Bush knows that letting the grapes die on the vine is best because it’s always better to let a sleeping dog sleep. Why wake him up so he can bite you in the azz. So the morale of this story is, “Alls well that ends without a completed investigation and a messy final report that proves they broke the law”. Ah and one final parting shot at those weak democrats in Congress. An old Chinese profit once said, “He would leave shlt laying around, may step in same”.

Bless you curmudgeon, for your observation; the difference between the two investigations has been startliing. Republicans stole food out of babes mouths, medicine and crusts of bread from our elderly, and made sure the poor were doubly punished for being poor–that’s how they paid for it.

TO ANSWER YOUR QUESTION: We started down the rabbit hole in the midterm election of 1994…our downward slide hit full stride in November/December 2000. Please don’t stop posting.

Oh Tracy, your time has past; people have caught on to you and your fog-visioned friends. Only a liberal would be foolish enough think that their sucess depends on government and higher taxes. You just stated an obvious fact about sucess and taxes although I will admit I get tired of hearing that same old fact over and over.

Hope this one doesn’t get deleted by TP.

OK DFLer, when I was in MN, I was poor due to the high property taxes, and my union dues. (I was making 6.49/hr) I left and now make 80k a yr.
My family and 3 brothers live there and pay a small fortune in property taxes which will never go down. Let me tell you something, its the DEMS who vote for anytax that they can think of. If it werent for Ronald Reagan and GW bUSH, the tax rates would be at 80 and 90 % and when a relative died, the goverment would tax the crap out of you . Also how many of your Hormel union jobs are now being done by illegal labor? and more DEMS want them here then Republicans.

$64 million+ was spent investigating a freakin’ blow job….they should find the money to investigate this traitor.

  108. curmudgeon Says:

    #106 –

Given your concern about keeping marriage vows, looks like you won’t be supporting McCain or Giuliani.

Let’s see — George W. Bush ignored warnings, including the August 6, 2000 memo entitled, “bin Laden determined to strike” — almost 3000 dead on 9/11. He then rushed us into an invasion and ongoing occupation of Afghanistan, in time to plant the opium crop in the fall of 2000, and now they account for 93% of the world supply (http://www.unodc.org/pdf/research/AFG07_ExSum_web.pdf) along with at least 437 U. S. military dead. Then he lied to us into an invasion and occupation of Iraq, leading to at least 3781 U. S. military deaths, and as many as 1.2 million deaths to Iraqis (source — http://www.alternet.org/waroniraq/62728/). And just in case you think the United States entered Afghanistan and Iraq in response to the events of 9/11, please consider the country of origin for the nineteen named hijackers: Saudia Arabia (15), United Arab Emirates (2), Egypt (1) and Lebanon (1).

One more point — Clinton didn’t add hundreds of billions in debt to the nation’s credit card, which you’ll need to pay as well (forget social security or medicare), but since you must be among the extremely wealthy, you have likely been investing your tax cut windfalls in foreign currencies.

Please explain to all of us why the money used to investigate Clinton was well spent, and why money to investigate Bush Administration actions would not be.
