Bush Expresses Desire To Serve In Iraq, Except ‘I’m Too Old’ And Terrorists ‘Would Notice Me’»

bushflight.jpgThe Washington Post’s Dan Froomkin highlights comments made recently by President Bush to a group of military bloggers. Blogger “N.Z. Bear” reported that Bush told the group he wishes he could be serving in Iraq — except that he’s too old:

Responding to one of the bloggers in Iraq he expressed envy that they could be there, and said he’d like to be there but “One, I’m too old to be out there, and two, they would notice me.”

Froomkin undercuts Bush’s claim by noting just how few hours Bush has spent on the ground in his “surprise visits” to Iraq:

Maybe Bush was just making idle chit-chat. But this would not be the first time the president has appeared unaware of the hardships his war has caused hundreds of thousands of American troops — while expressing a misguided sense of bravado.

He certainly hasn’t ever put himself in harm’s way. The president who avoided serving in Vietnam as a young man has made only three visits to Iraq since declaring that major combat operations were over more than four years ago. All three of the visits were unannounced and featured extensive security. Bush’s total time in country? Less than 15 hours.

The Bush team has frequently expressed a “misguided sense of bravado” in comparing their efforts with those of soldiers on the ground. Tony Snow once claimed Bush is “on the frontlines” of the Iraq war “every day.” Similarly, First Lady Laura Bush claimed “no one suffers more than the President and I do.”

President Bush once suggested that Americans here at home are making a similar sacrifice to those of soldiers on the ground. How? “They sacrifice peace of mind when they see the terrible image of violence on TV every night.”

Digg It!

Ok. I thought I’d heard it all.

  2. BARTLEBEE Says:

I’m not sure we have any openings in Iraq for ex crack heads with partially completed flight training and a background in cheerleading.

But we’ll keep your application on file Mr Bush, in case the Iraqi’s are looking for someone of your skillset.

Bahaha. What a joke. Does anyone take this guy seriously anymore?

  5. VerbalKint Says:

This bedwetting coward hasn’t served anyone, anywhere, in his entire life. To put it simply, Bush is a failed human being.

  6. Raven Says:

You’re never to old to die.

  7. A Patriot Acting Says:

Not true, VerbalKint, he’s served his boss Dick Cheney, his friends at Halliburton and his good friend from Hunt Oil very well. He’s also served Osama Bin Laden and his terrorist buddies quite well by ignoring them these past four years.

  8. DM Says:

You’re the Commander in Chief. You’ve already got a military responsibility.

  9. FunMe Says:

Oh my goodness, that was so funny I forgot to laugh. NOT!

I wonder how families with their loved in Iraq would feel about bush’s comment?

I especially wonder about those families who STILL support the president in this illegal war that is ALL about OIL.

  10. Badmoodman Says:

Too sad or too funny. You decide.

  11. troqua Says:

He’s not even courageous enough to go to the funerals.

  12. TripMaster Monkey Says:

    Chimpy, you insufferable jackass.

You had your chance to serve your country back in Viet Nam. At that time, you weren’t “too old”, and, trust me, no one would have “noticed” you.

Of course, we all know how that turned out.

And now you try to make noise like you’re some sort of a man, and try to sell us on the idea that you regret not being able to fight in the hellhole you’ve made out of a sovereign nation that posed no threat to us?

Chimpy, you epitomize the term “chickenhawk”. The insults you constantly give to our brave men and women in uniform are so grave, it’s surprising one of them hasn’t taken a shot at you by now…fortunately for you, they’re better people than you could ever even imagine yourself to be.

  13. Mrs. D Says:

Hey, he’s the president, right. He can give himself an exception to the age rule. Please encourage him to do so, today.

  14. OxyCon Says:

Bush in 1994 told the Houston Chronicle, “I was not prepared to shoot my eardrum out with a shotgun in order to get a deferment. Nor was I willing to go to Canada. So I chose to better myself by learning how to fly airplanes.”

That’s what Bush did when he had his chance to be a soldier at war.
At least he dodged the war in a classier way then Ted Nugent.

Gotta disagree with ya there, VerbalKint.
A prosecutor from Florida arrested in Michigan for allegedly seeking sex with a 5 year old. That’s a failed human being. A miserable, failed worthless piece of Sh!t.
Bush. Not really. He may be spoiled, he may have been spoon fed all his life, but he’s an accomplished politician, in Texas, as well as Pres (with the highest number of votes in his re-election bid)

  16. TripMaster Monkey Says:

    I’m betting this thread stays troll-free for a while… ^_^

  17. WaltinTexas Says:

He should go! And take Deferment Dick, Rummy, Condi and all the other pro-Iraq invasion idiots with him. They’re doing absolutely nothing good for America here, maybe (but, I doubt it) they can do some good over there.

  18. Mike Says:

Jeez Shrub, weak. Just take off your pretty pink Neocon dress and maybe the MOOslums won’t notice you.

  19. troqua Says:

Notice how W’s words mirror almost every one of our beloved trolls. “I’m too old or I would!” eh, Jake? scooter?

  20. sharon Says:

As commander in chief of the military maybe he should go over for a month or two anyway . . .just to do whatever it is he does

  21. bilbobaggins Says:

Yeah right. He was too chickenshit to fight in Vietnam and now he says he wants to fight in Iraq. Personally, I say that we relax the age requirement for him and send his ass over there. I would love to see him spend one day in their military uniforms in 110 degree heat.

  22. BARTLEBEE Says:

Yea, I think you’re probably right. They know better than to touch this one.

  23. DM Says:

That’s got to piss off the soldiers. At least they had the satisfaction of knowing that regardless of what orders are given, they have the discipline to wade through hell and fire to accomplish them under great duress.

Then this freak who gave the orders but can’t account for his own Texas Air Guard duty says he wishes he could be there but he can’t?

    Ass.

  24. Jackie Says:

If Bush were able to be in the Military he would do the same thing again. He would be the coward he is and skip out while drunk. The troops know the Liar-in-Chief is a coward and an idiot. They know Cheney is scared too as with his 5 ferments. This is what happens when America puts an rich idiot, drunk, coward, uneducated sicko in office. Cheney is in it for the money as with the Iraq oil. Americans will pay dearly for our mistake but the highest price we have already paid is the lost of life of our young soldiers. We allow these soldiers to die for the lies and greed of the White House. Even Alan Greenspan put the truth out that this invasion was nothing about Iraqi Freedom or WMDs it wall ALL ABOUT OIL CONTROL. Some families of Military soldiers can’t bring themselves to believe or admit their sons/daughters died based on Bush/Cheney lies. The world knows it and it’s about time Americans deal with that truth.

  25. Starve-A-Bush_Feed-A-Beaver Says:

I thought Bush had already served and that he was a highly decorated war veteran. That’s according to some of the things he’s said in the past:

    Houston Chronicle, January 2002:
“I’ve been to war. I’ve raised twins. If I had a choice, I’d rather go to war.”

    Associated Press, March 2002
“I learned some good lessons from Vietnam. First, there must be a clear mission. Secondly, the politics ought to stay out of fighting a war. There was too much politics during the Vietnam War.”

Meet The Press, February 8, 2004:
    “I’m a war president.”

  26. Psycho Pres Says:

Love that picture of me all cockified and stuff…reminds me of my time in Vietnam….flying and bombing….screwing whores….alot drinking….doing drugs…hehe…it was the best of times….it’s all kind of fuzzy really…hehe.
What dad? I wasn’t? What do you mean I wasn’t there? I was just dreaming that? Oh, yeah, forgot….well I could have, if I were the one decidering, I would have at least screwed some whores or something…like in that movie….love you long time…hehe…..do a line, drink some houch…that make me a real war hero…hehe…Babs I need some more pretzels.

    Pull my finger….hehe

  27. BARTLEBEE Says:

We all know Bush has his chance to fight in a war.

If he really “wished he were there too”, then he would have went when he had his chance in Viet Nam, instead of hiding out in the states.

I just can’t believe anyone in the military is dumb enough to believe him when he says that.

  28. Badmoodman Says:

If The Prez were to serve in Iraq, I’m pretty sure he’d have been personally implicated in Abu Gharaib or Haditha-style shenanigans by now. Of course, some other poor saps would have taken the fall for him.

  29. osage Says:

What a f***ing disgraceful pretender this delusional coward is. Don’t we all believe a draft-dodging, AWOL, cocaine sniffing alcoholic would really risk his life to honorably serve his country?!!! BS is too tame an expletive. The clown is completely and utterly shameless!

  30. hellinabucket Says:

Romeo’s Delight, don’t confuse quantity with quality. Bush is not an accomplished politician. Where’s the “Uniter, not a divider”, or the fiscal conservative? Where’s his justification for the loss of blood and treasure in Iraq?

He is the worst president this country has ever seen by far.

  31. WC Says:

President Bush once suggested that Americans here at home are making a similar sacrifice to those of soldiers on the ground. How? “They sacrifice peace of mind when they see the terrible image of violence on TV every night.”

In a one-on-one interview with Bush, Brian Williams once asked how Americans are sacrificing during the war.

Bush responded: “They are sacrificing by paying high taxes.”

  32. troqua Says:

Anti-Treason, Snow made that claim on his behalf.

  33. VerbalKint Says:

    Comment by Romeo’sDelight — September 18, 2007 @ 1:28 pm

Why do you believe that being an accomplished politician precludes being a failed human being?

Besides, Bush is not an accomplished politician. He is a product of his family and their political cronies.

  34. Jay Randal Says:

LOL send worthless Dubya to the front lines of Iraq today. He most likely would not come back alive or maimed.

  35. Krazny Says:

If Bush was a squad leader in Iraq, he probably would have killed himself, and his entire squad by now.

I can see it now: “sure we can take that fortified building with all them terrists, just get up there”

  36. troqua Says:

Q: Are there any members of the Bush family or this administration in this war?

SNOW: Yeah, the President. The President is in the war every day.

  37. Badmoodman Says:

Clinton and JFK were inbed presidents. W wishes he was the first imbed president. G’head, George, become a statistic and finally attend a soldier’s funeral.

  38. bilbobaggins Says:

The only thing his popular vote proved is that he is capable of scaring the hell out of the people in the United States. He is accomplished at nothing and he has accomplished nothing. He is the biggest failure of a President in the history of the US.

  39. Bruno Hauptmann Says:

The terrierists would notice him?!?!? Right, he’s the one over there hiding under the desk snorting coke. Yeah, that’s him. Our hero.

  40. Daryll Says:

Mr. President, you are truly serving us as an exceptional leader. We need you to continue to lead us to the next phase. Let our courageous soldiers serve and you lead. Keep up the good work!

  41. RB-Chicago Says:

    AND - TOO STUPID!!!!

  42. GSD Says:

Let’s not forget that neo-con hack Fu*kwad Ajami said that Scooter Libby was a “soldier” in the war and that Bush pardoned him because Bush wouldn’t “leave a soldier behind” in a time of war.

These are the worst, most delusional hacks ever.

Crikey, Bush is ready to give Dick Cheney a purple heart for shooting an old man in the face.

    -GSD

  43. Nelson Says:

This is one of the rare instance where the President claimed to be unable to do something because of existing rules.
But he is not too old. He may be too old to enlist in the Army. But there are some serving there from the National Guard and Military Police who are roughly his age.

  44. null Says:

Bwahaaaaha, doesn’t this guy ride around in an ‘everything proof’ Limo with installed automatic machine guns here at home while the boys in Iraq still ride in death traps?

  45. Jay Randal Says:

Napoleon of France led his troops into battles, so Dubya should do the same and meet his Waterloo in Iraq or Iran.

  53. Dennis Raines Says:

But remember, he thought we should have stayed in Vietnam, and it was a mistake to leave. So don’t draw any of those comparisons, unless they benefit his position.

It’s pretty quiet on the troll front…. NICE.

  54. Jake D. Says:

I don’t think the President (or his daughters) should serve in Iraq either. I admire his willingness to do so, but his proper place is here at home. Has any (NOT on the “Ignore List”) seen that movie “The Queen”?

  56. ann Says:

Good grief. Who would want a spoiled rotten overpriviledged entitlement brat like Bush in their platoon? Last person in the world I’d trust to have my back.

  57. Jay Randal Says:

Bush wants everybody to believe that he never wanted the Vietnam war to end, but he never served one day over in Vietnam. He was drunk on whiskey and snorting cocaine in Texas air guard.

    You’re joking, right?

Accomplished politician? The only thing Bush was accomplished at was drilling dry oil wells until his pa bailed him out, and pressured his friends to make him govenor.

And as for the highest number of votes in his re-election bid, where the HELL did you get those bullsh1t numbers? You’re comparing the SQUEAKER where he BARELY scraped through in 04, mostlly due to voter fraud from the right wing, to Bill Clintons win of 1996?

Bush (supposedly) won 51 percent of the vote in 2004, to Kerry’s 48 percent, making a 3 point spread.

Clinton won his re-election in 1996 with 49 percent of the vote, compared to Bob Doles 40 percent, making for a 9 point spread.

The fact is Bill Clinton garnered a much more commanding victory in 1996 than Dumb Dubya did in 2004, and anything to the contrary is just more right wing “fuzzy math”.

Bush is a callous serial liar. During the Viet Nam war Johnson could not sleep and aged and lost weight, couldn’t sleep almost immediately as the war went bad. Bush on the other hand, is always cheerful, doesn’t lose any sleep, eats pretty well, and has time for biking and posing in military jackets. He is probably the most insensitive war president ever. Take a look at pictures of Lincoln and FDR. They were not happy campers like the current idiot.
The Liar in Chief has no shame, saying he wishes he could be fighting in Iraq. He told Draper who interviewed Bush for his new book that he “does tears.” Doesn’t anyone in the media have the guts to tell the jerk he has no credibility?

OK, tell me what a great success we are having in the middle of a civil war in a country we illegally invaded and are still occupying? And if it only took us 4 1/2 years to get to this point, how long to get where you want us to be (Iraq as a 52nd state?). And, why did we invade Iraq and not Saudi or Syria after 9/11, any way?

I can’t wait to see your answers to this one.

He should be on his knees apologizing for what he’s done - but our seeing that is as likely as his seeing Iraq combat.

Truly, I have always found goodness and fault in the presidents of my lifetime. In this president, I have found no goodness and only fault. I don’t believe I have witnessed a worse president and I pray that he will continue to hold that record, because I don’t know if we can withstand another one as bad as he.

The surge IS working. More American lives will be lost so that Bush can run out the clock and make sure the next President “loses” the GWOT. Depravity has some perogatives.

    is it to stop terrorists?

    Comment by Daryll — September 18, 2007 @ 2:06 pm
    Dear Daryll-

Your Dear Leader has ALREADY sacrificed our security by wiping his ass with our Constitution, taking away habeus corpus, and fomenting hatred toward America at unprecidented levels.

“How about taking your liberal glasses off and lookin at things in reality?”

How about YOU take off those rose colored glasses and JUST SAY NO to the kool-ade for awhile. Read the GAO report and listen to what your precious Petreus’ boss General Fallon has to say about Petreus, the surge and America’s place in the war on terror. Not as rosey an assessment as your Dear Leader makes it out to be. If everything is going so well, why is Bush’s friend from Hunt Oil undermining contract negotiations in Iraq by striking a sie deal with the Kurds? He has access to sensitive security intel and is acting as though there is NO CHANCE for reconciliation between the Sunnis, Shias & Kurds

“I’ve been to war. I’ve raised twins. If I had a choice, I’d rather go to war.”

Lying about how macho he is? For the current occupant of the White House, that’s routine.

  102. DanCaveman Says:

I would re-sign (again - I guess that would make it re-re-sign) up if “The Decider” would go with me. He would have to stay for a whole tour. I would be willing to make it a two man fireteam (me and him) since I don’t know anyone that would want him guarding his back.

What do you say tough guy? Want to see some “action” Dubya?

Keep covering for the cheerleader buddy, he surrounds himself with sycophants and always has.

It’s not a threat, it’s a crude way to say that that punk coward is my enemy for all the damage he has done to my country.

More than Sadam, more than Osama. How many more lives will be sacrificed at the altar of Bush’s Ego?

    F*ck him.

    the surge is not working

Security is deteriorating in southern Iraq as rival Shiite militias vying for power have stepped up their attacks after moving out of Baghdad to avoid U.S.-led military operations, according to the latest quarterly Pentagon report on Iraq released yesterday.

“The security environment in southern Iraq took a notable turn for the worse in August” with the assassination of two governors, said the report, which covers June through August. “There may be retaliation and an increase in intra-Shi’a violence throughout the South,” it said, whereas previously the violence was centered in the main southern city of Basra.

  109. Long Tooth Says:

As the Vietnam War raged in the 1960s, Mitt Romney received a deferment from the draft as a Mormon “minister of religion” for the duration of his missionary work in France, which lasted two and a half years.

Before and after his missionary deferment, Romney also received nearly three years of deferments for his academic studies. When his deferments ended and he became eligible for military service in 1970, he drew a high number in the annual lottery that determined which young men were drafted. His high number ensured he was not drafted into the military…

“By serving as a missionary and being given the deferment, Romney ensured that he would not be drafted from July 1966 until February 1969. Romney’s draft record from the time describes him as “minister of religion or divinity student.” Mayo said the church would have considered Romney a minister.

Romney, who has said he would have served if he had been drafted, shed some light on his view of the matter in a recent interview with the Globe.

“I really don’t recall thinking about political positions when I was knocking at the door in France” as a missionary, Romney said. “I was supportive of my country. I longed in many respects to actually be in Vietnam and be representing our country there and in some ways it was frustrating not to feel like I was there as part of the troops that were fighting in Vietnam.”

I disagree. Bad CEOs in America at least know how to make it LOOK like they’re doing well.

    I say, “GO Mr. President!”

We’ll make an exception for you! Why not, you’re exempt from all other laws, rules, codes of conduct?

You’d better watch out for friendly fire, though…

And I PROMISE, we won’t ask to see your flag-draped coffin when it comes home. Too much of a bummer for this feel-good war!

    PEACE

  123. Kiki Says:

Of course they would notice him…he’d be in the plane that’s heading for the hills instead of heading to a fight. Or the one flying into a ditch or something.

Remember that otherwise horrible movie, “Independence Day”…wouldn’t it be cool if we had a President who got out there and did something despite the risk? Hell, even authorizing fighter jets on 9/11 to patrol the skies would have been SOMETHING.

We’ve already seen how George W. Bush acts under pressure and it’s not good.

  124. Bill in Chicago Says:

Plus, he’s “stupid,” and “a coward.”

  125. andy phx Says:

What a DICK!!!!!

  126. LividLib Says:

As pathetic as B$sh’s comment is, he has light years to go to demonstrate the cowardice that right wing suck ass guitarist Ted Nugent did by boasting of urinating and defecating in his pants for an entire week to avoid serving his country during Vietnam. Now he wraps himself in the flag thinking he’s the second coming of Rambo.
