Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Patrick Leahy (D-VT) is demanding the White House turn over information necessary to complete a number of Judiciary Committee investigations into Alberto Gonzales’ tenure at the DoJ. “All I want is the material we need to ask some questions about the former attorney general’s conduct, on torture and warrantless wiretapping, so we can legitimately ask, ‘Here’s what was done in the past, what will you do?”‘ Leahy said. The White House appears unwilling to compromise:
“No” was the answer one senior adviser gave when asked whether the White House is willing to tie the nomination to the production of such documents.
!!!
WOO HOO !!!
!
September 18th, 2007 at 10:14 amBut, Bush & Co. doesn’t like oversight. Bush hates being held accountable for his decisions.
September 18th, 2007 at 10:14 amgood for Leahy!
September 18th, 2007 at 10:15 ami like the sound fo that!
… oh… i may have over reacted too soon…
time to make some calls, send the messages:
NO CONFIRMATION HEARING UNTIL
THOSE PAPERS AND PHONE RECORDS
ARE TURNED OVER.
…
September 18th, 2007 at 10:16 amI guess we won’t have an AG for the next year and a half, then. Or until the next “recess’, whichever comes first. Guess which!
September 18th, 2007 at 10:16 amHere’s an unassailable rock for Leahy to stand upon.
September 18th, 2007 at 10:16 amLet’s hope he does.
When can we torture Leahy? Soon I hope.
September 18th, 2007 at 10:16 amBush hates being held accountable for his decisions.

It goes back to his carefree childhood days of blowing up frogs w/ fire crackers. Unlike Iraqis, old habits die hard.

September 18th, 2007 at 10:17 amThe Dems have the legal and fiscal power, yet they refuse to use it. Why?
September 18th, 2007 at 10:18 amPolitics OVER the security of Americans.
There’s a reason Congress’ approval ratings are lower than Bush’s.
September 18th, 2007 at 10:19 am“No†was the answer one senior adviser gave when asked whether the White House is willing to tie the nomination to the production of such documents.
Um, too bad. It is.
September 18th, 2007 at 10:20 amHey, ADMIN! Mr P’s back!
September 18th, 2007 at 10:20 amGuys, no confirmation hearings just means that Chimpy’s interim appointee, Paul Clement, will just have the job longer.
September 18th, 2007 at 10:23 amTime to impeach Bush for refusing to cooperate with Congress.
September 18th, 2007 at 10:28 amSounds like more lip service. I’ll believe it when I see it. I refuse to be disappointed again by any one of our elected officials.
September 18th, 2007 at 10:32 amSenator Leahy is one of the few public servants that almost restore my faith in government ! If the democrats want to win the next election they should follow his lead and restore habeas corpus and the geneva conventions NOW !
September 18th, 2007 at 10:48 amThe problem is that the acting AG is not Paul Clement. The acting AG is Peter Keisler who is a co-founder of the Federalist Society. So if Leahy stands firm, then Bush has a de-facto AG who is just another strand of the same rope as Gonzo and his other appointments. They will just keep on keepin’ on.
This is not to say that Leahy should roll over. It is to say that we need more aggressive oversight.

September 18th, 2007 at 11:00 amBush will NOT cooperate, no confirmation hearings for the next AG nominee until Bush turns over documents = recess appointment.
September 18th, 2007 at 11:07 amWell, then the response to Bush’s urging for Congress to quickly confirm the good Judge (have you noticed, the GOP likes to pick former judges so that they can call them Judge all the time), is No. Sorry. It really is that simple. And, of course, don’t put the Senate in recess, thereby eliminating any recess appointments.
September 18th, 2007 at 11:16 amTHANK GOD for LEAHY!
September 18th, 2007 at 11:16 amReid better call off that October 8 recess.
This is really weak. Not only will they NOT get the records (Bush will just give him a term appointment…for two years), but Leahy has already proved time and time again that he will cave and do NOTHING.
I predict that Bush will complain about stonewalling, Leahy will give and and they will appoint him.
I mean, what good would it do to say, “This is what gonzales did, what will you do?” What good would it do? Gonzales lied numerous times and said what he had to to get appointed. Many people knew he was lying at the time and he was appointed anyway. Look at Bush’s SCOTUS appointments. They too have done the exact opposite of what they promised (respect precedent, etc), which people KNEW based on their past records would happen…and yet again the facts were ignored because he was a “good person.”
Why should we expect any more this time around. Not only has precedent been set, but a TREND has been set. The appointment will blatantly lie, his record will be ignored because he’s a “good guy”, and then once appointed he will continue Bush’s agenda and congress will AGAIN do nothing.
Leahy, pull your head out of your rear. You have no respect from anyone anymore. You’ve backed down time and time again and despite making NUMEROUS threats you have not once even come close to backing up your words. Back up your PAST threats before you start making new ones or else you have zero credibility and BUsh would have Zero reason to listen to the NEW threats.
September 18th, 2007 at 11:32 amlet the “I think he deserves an up or down vote without delay” rhetoric start!

September 18th, 2007 at 11:59 amSenator Leahy, please stand by your guns on this. Please insist on first-things-first and hold up any confirmation hearings until the WH has statusfied previous requests of your committee. After all, our little woodenhead president, Americans and the world would have been better served if Gonzales had not be confirmed – Bush does not need an AG to serve out his term.
One more thing; please pursue all of the corrupt republicans until they are homeless and penniless or they are jailed.

Off-topic, BTW…
September 18th, 2007 at 12:03 pmIf it weren’t for November, 2006, the Leahy’s investigation would not be happening now.
September 18th, 2007 at 1:00 pmIf you think about it, you’ll realize that that election changed many things.
Most notably is the unified effort by the Republicans to obstruct legislation.
The Democratic Party in Congress is blamed for impotence.
The truth is that they don’t have the votes to overcome the filibuster.
Getting Republicans in the Senate to vote their conscience instead of the party line is paramount.
They still want the promised “unending majority”.
It is hard for them to see that Rove and Bush destroyed that ideal.
If your Senator is Republican, write, call, send email.
Let him/her know where his/her constituency stands.
If your Senator is up for reelection, support your Democratic candidate.
