If it werenâ€™t for November, 2006, the Leahyâ€™s investigation would not be happening now.
If you think about it, youâ€™ll realize that that election changed many things.
Most notably is the unified effort by the Republicans to obstruct legislation.
The Democratic Party in Congress is blamed for impotence.
The truth is that they donâ€™t have the votes to overcome the filibuster.
Getting Republicans in the Senate to vote their conscience instead of the party line is paramount.
They still want the promised “unending majority”.
It is hard for them to see that Rove and Bush destroyed that ideal.
If your Senator is Republican, write, call, send email.
Let him/her know where his/her constituency stands.
If your Senator is up for reelection, support your Democratic candidate.

Senator Leahy, please stand by your guns on this. Please insist on first-things-first and hold up any confirmation hearings until the WH has statusfied previous requests of your committee. After all, our little woodenhead president, Americans and the world would have been better served if Gonzales had not be confirmed – Bush does not need an AG to serve out his term.

One more thing; please pursue all of the corrupt republicans until they are homeless and penniless or they are jailed.

This is really weak. Not only will they NOT get the records (Bush will just give him a term appointment…for two years), but Leahy has already proved time and time again that he will cave and do NOTHING.

I predict that Bush will complain about stonewalling, Leahy will give and and they will appoint him.

I mean, what good would it do to say, “This is what gonzales did, what will you do?” What good would it do? Gonzales lied numerous times and said what he had to to get appointed. Many people knew he was lying at the time and he was appointed anyway. Look at Bush’s SCOTUS appointments. They too have done the exact opposite of what they promised (respect precedent, etc), which people KNEW based on their past records would happen…and yet again the facts were ignored because he was a “good person.”

Why should we expect any more this time around. Not only has precedent been set, but a TREND has been set. The appointment will blatantly lie, his record will be ignored because he’s a “good guy”, and then once appointed he will continue Bush’s agenda and congress will AGAIN do nothing.

Leahy, pull your head out of your rear. You have no respect from anyone anymore. You’ve backed down time and time again and despite making NUMEROUS threats you have not once even come close to backing up your words. Back up your PAST threats before you start making new ones or else you have zero credibility and BUsh would have Zero reason to listen to the NEW threats.

Well, then the response to Bush’s urging for Congress to quickly confirm the good Judge (have you noticed, the GOP likes to pick former judges so that they can call them Judge all the time), is No. Sorry. It really is that simple. And, of course, don’t put the Senate in recess, thereby eliminating any recess appointments.

The problem is that the acting AG is not Paul Clement. The acting AG is Peter Keisler who is a co-founder of the Federalist Society. So if Leahy stands firm, then Bush has a de-facto AG who is just another strand of the same rope as Gonzo and his other appointments. They will just keep on keepin’ on.

This is not to say that Leahy should roll over. It is to say that we need more aggressive oversight.

Senator Leahy is one of the few public servants that almost restore my faith in government ! If the democrats want to win the next election they should follow his lead and restore habeas corpus and the geneva conventions NOW !
